1 Newsletter No. 9 - Term 1 Week 9 Thursday 30 March 2017 Farewell and Thank You As most of you would know by now, Friday will be my final day as Assistant Principal at Kalinda. This will bring to a close almost 7 years serving the school community in this role. As of the beginning of Term 2, I will take up the position of Principal at Antonio Park Primary School in Mitcham. I am very proud of what we have achieved at Kalinda over the last 7 years, and will be sorry to be leaving a leadership role at such a fantastic school. When I first arrived at Kalinda, two things struck me as being different to any other school I had experienced. The first was how friendly the students were. Instead of just walking past me, an adult they didn’t know, students at Kalinda would stop and say hello. The older students would introduce themselves and say ‘nice to meet you’. I then noticed that students of all different ages were playing together out in the yard. They were the happiest and friendliest kids I had ever come across. I will very much miss working with such a fantastic group of students. The second thing that stood out to me was how much the teachers at this school cared for the children. Every teacher treated every child as if they were their own. It was therefore no surprise to then discover that almost every teacher at the school with primary aged children chose to send their children to Kalinda, and this has continued to be the case throughout my time here. It was from this solid foundation that I have had the privilege to lead some fantastic initiatives over my years here, covering all areas of school life. I am thrilled that through all our hard work, Kalinda has grown a wonderful reputation in our community, and for such a wide variety of things. People coming in to the school tell me they hear about our sports program, or maybe our incredible productions and performing arts, our amazing facilities, our digital portfolios, our Challenge Based Learning program, our visual arts displays, our personalised literacy and numeracy teaching, our 1:1 iPad program, our online curriculum, our use of digital devices and the Google ecosystem. Every one of these things has attracted visitors from other schools trying to emulate what we do, in fact, around 100 schools in my time at Kalinda from all over Victoria, New South Wales and as far afield as Japan, Indonesia, India and the US! The Department of Education, ACARA, AITSL and Education Services Australia in other words, every major educational institution there is, have also featured our work. As I said, I am very proud of what we have achieved! I would like to thank the entire Kalinda community for all their support over the years and their kind words over the last couple of weeks. I would also like to thank the incredible staff at Kalinda, from teachers to office staff to integration staff, every one of them continues to treat every child like their own and works so hard to ensure each child reaches their full potential. What a special place to be able to work at for so long! I look forward to staying closely in touch with Kalinda as a parent, and to seeing the even greater heights our school can climb to in the future. RICHARD LAMBERT ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Goodbye Richard On behalf of the staff and the whole school community, I want to thank Richard Lambert for all the fine work he has done at Kalinda primary School. The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation is coming to Eastland Shopping Centre on 9 April - that is just a couple of Sundays away!

We are very excited to be part of Harveast, Eastland's free one-day event showcasing local chefs, producers and suppliers. This event is running in conjunction with Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

The Foundation is setting up a stall to show off the fun and learning of a kitchen garden program. There will be educational resources for sale, a hands-on garden activity for the kids, and plenty of Foundation staff at hand to answer all of your questions. We would love you to drop by and say hello. A couple of local kitchen garden program schools will also be there. Chat with kitchen garden educators from Wonga Park Primary School and Whitehorse Primary School, who are ready and willing to share their experiences of running a successful kitchen garden program. Visit Eastland's website for more information about other events on the day, and to download the event program (it includes a handy map to make it easy to find us). We are excited about hanging out with the kitchen garden community in Melbourne's east. See you there.
