Camp On Thursday 8th of October students from Stage 3, accompanied by Assistant Principal Ms Lee. Mrs Khalek, Miss Dalton and Mr Phillips and a parent helper- Mr Taufa, gathered in the cold early hours on Albert Street to begin their camp to Canberra. Day one saw the group visit the Mount Ainslie lookout, Questacon Science Centre, Cockington Green miniature village and the Australian War Memorial. That night the group rested at the Canberra city YHA which provided comfortable and secure accommodation. The following day the students enjoyed very informative tours of both Parliament House and Old Parliament House. Lunch in the historical gardens was a highlight. In addition, a drive through the National embassies district and a tour of the National Gallery were enjoyed. The trip was a wonderful success with the students behaviour and manners being positively noted by many staff and visitors of venues we visited. We wish to thank Ms Dalton and Ms Khalek who planned and arranged the trip. In addition many thanks to Mr Taufa for accompanying the group as parent helper. Children’s recounts of the excursion can be found at the end of this newsletter. Mr Phillips

Marie Bashir PS Choir The School choir is recruiting new members for 2016. If you would like to join the choir to have a wonderful experience singing and performing, please come and join us in Mrs Moi's classroom 8.30am Wednesday mornings. Art Classes After School HQ Artists will be conducting art classes after school each Friday from 6-7:30pm. If you are interested, please see flyer attached to this newsletter. Drama Classic This term, the P & C have granted MBPS funding to initiate a partnership with Sydney Theatre Company. STC partners each participating MBPS teacher with a STC Teaching Artist for the school term. Together they explore how drama strategies can be integrated with English and literacy, focusing on narrative writing, inferential comprehension, confidence in oracy or descriptive language. The Teaching Artists demonstrate the power of using drama pedagogy with quality literature to improve English and literacy in young learners. This year 1S, 1M, 3L and 5A are participating. Each of those classes then ‘buddy’ up with a class on their stage to deliver the same lesson, therefore building the capacity of teachers to deliver quality drama lessons that develop deeper understanding, empathy and engage with quality literature. Over seven weeks, the Teaching Artist team teaches the program with the teacher in their classroom, modelling the drama strategies and empowering the teacher to confidently integrate these ideas and strategies into their regular teaching practice. Thank you P & C for this opportunity to engage students in the creative arts and improve literacy outcomes. Mrs Le

Not Returning To Marie Bashir Public School In 2016

We are now starting to consider the arrangement of classes for 2016. As you would be aware, schools are staffed according to the number of children who enrol at the beginning of each year. To assist in our planning, we need to know of any children currently in K to Year 5 who will not be returning in 2016. If you know your child will not be at Marie Bashir Public School next year, would you please complete the form below and return it to school as soon as possible. Please note that if your child will be returning to school after the first day of term (i.e. Thursday, 28 January 2016) you will also need to notify the school in writing otherwise your child cannot be allocated to a class. Thank you for your support. Regards, Jacqui Attard Principal

Camp Recounts Cockington Green Gardens On Thursday our class and 6D visited Cockington Green Gardens. The houses and structures were placed within flowers and clay models of people, foot ballers and characters such as Where’s Wally. After seeing all the cottages, villages and landmark we entered the gift shop. We were amazed by the glass jars full of tiny glass candy and others were amused by cool little toys. By the end of our visit we had plenty of photos to look back at and toys for amusement. I had a really interesting visit and would like to visit Canberra again and especially Cockington Green Gardens. I enjoyed the whole trip. By Angela Wootton 5A Canberra Camp On Thursday 8th October and Friday 9th October, Years 5 and 6 went on camp to Canberra and learnt many fascinating things about what Canberra has to offer. We were fortunate enough to visit Parliament House old and new. We learnt many interesting things and facts about parliament and saw the arrangement of seats in the House of Representatives, the lower house and the Senate, the upper house. We also got to know who sits where and had a drive around all the embassies that were close to parliament house. Overall, we had a great time, Canberra was amazing and our bus driver was the best. Vishnu 5A

War Memorial On the eighth and ninth of October, Thursday to Friday, the years five and six went on a camp to Canberra. Our first stop was Questacon. Questacon was a science fair, or place, where the projects and equipment were based on the force of gravity. There were many various activities, (like robot making etc.), and interesting science equipment that made us gasp. At the War Memorial, all one hundred and two thousand names of soldiers were carved on the walls of the memorial. During the Last Post Ceremony, we watched as our captains and other people laid wreaths. The trip back was also exhausting, but Canberra was a very exciting place to be. Victoria– 5A

SCHOOL CAMP AT CANBERRA I had waited for days and weeks for school camp and finally the day had come! At around six o’clock we boarded the coach to start the journey to the ACT. 321… HOORAY! We made it passed the border to Canberra! Our class had to hurry up or we would miss The Australian War Memorial. I thought that place might bore me out but no, it was great! The guide at the A.W.M showed us two rooms that had sound effects, helicopter wind and flashing lights. Those two rooms were of the Vietnam War and World War 2. We also got to see a 180 degree screen movie of World War 2. Our class was very lucky to go to an ANZAC ceremony of the dogs of war. Our accommodation was at the YHA CITY Canberra. I jumped on the top bunk, then it was lights out. I really enjoyed Canberra and I look forward to coming back again! Gerard– 5A

CAMP Canberra is a home to many attractions including the Australian War Memorial, Questacon, Cockington Green Gardens and Parliament House. When the bus driver announced, “We are now stopping at the Australian War Memorial!” I was really excited that I was going to step inside, and see the actual things the soldiers touched and wore. When we went inside, there was a remembrance ceremony being held so we had to keep quiet. Later, we went upstairs, there were 3 videos for us to watch, the first one was about how the G for George bomber which survived 90 missions, when it was only supposed to last 30. The other videos were about how the soldiers prepared for war. When I watched the G for George video, I imagined myself on that bomber, frightened that I was going to die. I also saw the cricket bat they used to play cricket with, it looked very old. The Australian War Memorial was my favourite part of camp. Amena, 6D

The War Memorial The War Memorial made me very sombre and thankful to the soldiers who fought in the war and for their sacrifice. Coincidentally, the day we visited the War Memorial was a special remembrance day for two soldiers and their dogs who had died during the Afghanistan war. As school captains, Harrison and I got to participate in the last post ceremony. We laid the wreath down with the sounds of bagpipes filling the air and listening to the soldier’s oath. This made me contemplate and remember the soldiers who fought for Australia’s safety. This experience was a day I will never forget. Catherine -6D

Canberra Canberra is full of beautiful land marks that cannot be missed, from the War Memorial to Old and New Parliament Houses and Questacon. You might think that these were my favourite places but they weren’t. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely adored them, especially The War Memorial, however my favourite part of camp was … GOING TO THE ACCOMODATION! Yep, that was my favourite part. After a long day of walking around the amazing city of Canberra, we needed a rest. After a long and relaxing sleep we were woken by the lovely voice of Mrs Khalek at 6:30 am. We swiftly got changed and packed up, had breakfast - cereal and toast. We continued our journey touring Canberra. Thank you to all the teachers that organised this trip. WE LOVED IT! Maryam 6D

Cockington Green This term, Stage 3 got the opportunity to go on a Canberra Camp overnight. We all enjoyed the wonderful attractions. In my opinion, the most enjoyable attraction was Cockington Green. Cockington Green is a home, owned by a family, that build little doll sized houses inspired by traditional English buildings. There are heaps of figures and little houses to enjoy. The best part was the miniature steam train which I got a ride on. On the train you got to see this little funny alien scene where one alien is in the men’s’ bathroom. This was the most enjoyable part of the Canberra camp. Sisi 6D
