By now you have received an initial letter from the Session regarding next steps in our process and following the August 4 th Session Meeting there will be another letter to the congregation updating our progress and keeping you informed. If you would like to speak with me in person, please do not hesitate to contact me. Of course, as Presbyterians we have multiple perspectives on these issues. That is part of the identity of our church –we are people of strongly held beliefs who come together around the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the One who gives us UNITY. He is the source of our reconciliation and strength. In HIM we find our commonalities and the spiritual glue that binds us together as a congregation. I just want to assure people that everything we are attempting to do is with a purpose of keeping our congregation together –everyone together. Not just some people and not just one perspective. Our goal is to attempt to find our spiritual unity in the midst of issues which might seek to tear us apart. This together-ness and connectedness is what I pledge to you is our common goal. We want to do nothing to harm the historic, relational strength of The Church of the Covenant. As I have shared with you, the motion that I proposed and wrote in my committee on reconciliation at the General Assembly overwhelmingly was passed both by the committee on which I served and also in the plenary session of the General Assembly itself. As I had prayed about the General Assembly in advance the word that kept bumping around in my head and in my heart was “reconciliation”. The Word of God says this –“All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation...We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5: 18, 20) As your pastor I beseech you to be reconciled to one another as a sign of our reconciliation in Christ. Faithfully, Dr. Stu Broberg P.S. Our extreme thanks to Stacy Phillips for her brilliant organizing and leadership of Vacation Bible School this July. Non-Smoking Request It has come to our attention that since The Church of the Covenant is a non-smoking facility that we should move the outside smoking area away from the entrance to the Commons. We are asking that if smoking you would use the area at the rear of the Covenant Center. This will keep the smoke out of the area where people gather. We would like to thank our friends who smoke for helping us out in this situa-tion. Respectfully, The Buildings and Grounds Committee

FELLOWSHIP OF CONCERN For prayer support or to join this ministry, call the church office. Please contact the Fellowship of Concern to give the names of those who are in need of prayer for health or other reasons. The names will then be called or emailed to the church members who pray daily for others. Prayer request forms are available in each pew. Completed forms may be

placed in the offering basket on Sunday.

The Three Rivers Festival of Hope The long awaited event is almost here! We have several ways in which you can engage this once-in-a-generation event and have an eternal impact:

• Serve as an usher. We still need a couple hundred folks that will help people and groups get to their seats, collect offerings and other duties.

• Serve as a counselor (if you have attended the classes)

• Invite a friend. Please make sure that you get one of the Invite a Friend forms from the Welcome Center. We want to take a bus load of church members and friends to hear the gospel. Let's take full advantage of this rare and outstanding opportunity! Check the website www.ThreeRiversHope.org * Buses will be available for both the Friday evening and the Sunday afternoon sessions. There is no cost to enter the festival -$10 donation per person collected to defray the cost of transportation. A sign-up sheet and information will be available in the Commons between church services on July 27, August 3rd and 10th as well as in the church office. Please reserve early since space will be limited.

CELEBRATE MISSION WEEKEND It’s hard to believe that it has been almost an entire year since we began the “Mission is Possible” campaign here at the Church of the Covenant. So much has happened in a year!

Our goal for this campaign was simple: Get more folks involved in hands on mission work in the community and in our world to spread the light of Christ. To accomplish this goal, we formed “God in Action” groups dedicated to serving various mission endeavors.

Thankfully, many of you answered the call of Christ to serve our neighbors in need! Currently, we have 18 God in Action mission groups working year round in the name of Christ. These groups do everything from build houses to pack groceries to sew sleeping bags to fly all the way to Haiti! New groups are always forming according to the Spirit’s leading!

In addition to these dedicated groups, the COTC has reached out missionally in many ways this year. Our youth participated in an “at home” mission trip over the summer helping out the local community on Locust Street. Our congregation has donated food, clothing, Christmas gifts, baby supplies and other items during the year to various organizations. Our mission team has donated funds to assist in the operating costs of some worthy groups and missionaries. Our VBS staff welcomed almost 85 children from the LeMoyne Center to our “Weird Animals” VBS. And, of course, our facility is used every week of the year by groups such as Special Olympics, Turning Point, Celebrate Recovery, AA , Family Promise and other nonprofits. That’s a lot of mission work, or should I say, “God Work” being done by the COTC!

This is cause for celebration! In order to celebrate all of the great work being done, the Mission Committee is hosting Celebrate Mission weekend on Oct. 4-5, 2014. This year, the activities will include:

A Habitat for Humanity work day on Saturday, Oct. 4.

A special guest preacher at all 3 worship services on Sunday, Oct. 5: Mr. Dean Gartland, Director of the Washington City Mission.

A Celebrate Mission Dinner on Sunday, Oct 5 at 5:30pm.

The brand new “Celebrate Mission Dinner” will be a fun celebration of all of the hard work we have done in our community and world in 2013-14! Each God in Action group will be given the opportunity to attend and tell us how God was leading them to love our neighbors over the preceding year. A delicious dinner will be served and much applause will be heard! God has been moving powerfully through our hands and our feet! Please put Celebrate Mission Weekend on your calendar today!

Pastor Emily

FROM HANDS AND HEARTS

~ VIAL OF LIFE UPDATE~ As most of us realize, it is very important to keep medical information current. That would include those who have a “vial of life” (highly recommended by the Hands and Hearts Com-mittee). If you need to update your informa-tion there are forms available in the rack near the Welcome Center. If you would like infor-mation on the “Vial of Life” please see Connie Hornickel or a member of the committee.

Children’s Ministry Program

YOUTH SCHEDULE FOR AUGUST Here's what's happening in youth ministry for the last month of summer:

July 30 to August 2: Camp at Pine Springs August 3: 6-8:30 PM - Swim Party at Artuso’s August 10: 3-8:00 PM - Swim, Survival and Last Blast at Smiths August 16: Youth Night at The Festival of Hope (Consol Energy Center)

It won't be long until we crank up another ministry year as school starts. Stay tuned for news about Breakfast Club, Club 56 and other events meant to speak life into our kids and equip them to be salt and light in their world.

CLUB 56 ~ WARMED UP AND

READY TO GO!! Club 56 has been a ton of fun for the summer and we look

forward to tons more as we head into September. We will meet with kids in grades 5 and 6 every other Sunday starting September 14 with kickball and “Make-your-own-Sundae” Sunday. The time will be 4:30pm to 6:00pm. We will also engage the kids in service to their church and com-munity on a regular basis. Please mark your calendars for Sept 14, 28; Oct

12, 26; Nov 9, 23; Dec 7, 21.

VBS a Success Weird Animals Vacation Bible School was a tremendous success! Just over 200 children were signed up, and many attended each day. The children sang, laughed, and receiving the Good News that Jesus loves them no matter what! VBS was such a blessed thing to behold and be a part of. Many thanks to all 80 youth and adult volunteers who helped before and during the Vacation Bible School week and helped with the Friday evening picnic and program. We couldn’t have done it without you! Some highlights were; music time all together as one fun loud group, children hearing the Good News that Jesus died for their sins and them signing their names to a cross, skits by Dr. Paws and Dr. Obedia, the Oglebay Good Zoo bringing small zoo critters for us to see on Friday, and the great picnic and closing program on Friday evening.

Mark your calendar for VBS next year, July 13th-17th.

Rally Day I know it seems too soon to think about fall, but Rally Day will be here before you know it. Sunday, September

7th, is our official Sunday School / Christian Education kick off day. Sunday School for children and adults will begin, with new and exciting offerings. Let's explore anew learning to love God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind. There will be a “Pitch-in Picnic” to follow afterward - stay tuned for more details.

Nursery Helpers Do you like playing and being with little children? Or maybe you have little children? We are looking for a few people to assist our nursery nanny Amy Regal. She is very loving, and well qualified, she works with special needs children in the Trinity school system when she's not being our "nanny". However, “Miss Amy” cannot do it alone. We would love to enlist older teens with experience, through adults, to work along side Miss Amy. Please contact Miss Stacy if you can help one Sunday approximately every 6 weeks. 724-222-0190 x115, [email protected]

BREAKFAST

CLUB NEWS A whole new and exciting chapter of youth ministry will begin this fall with the launching of the

Breakfast Club. This concept puts the emphasis of youth ministry on Sunday morning when we, in fact have the most kids involved in attending church. Breakfast Club will take place immediately following the 9:43 service during the traditional Sunday School hour. As its name indicates, we plan to serve a hot breakfast each week.

ADULT EDUCATION

NEW ADULT EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES COMING THIS FALL In conjunction with our fall theme of “Learning to Love God,” the adult education task force has been busy preparing some new classes for the fall. In addition to the regular Sunday morning of-ferings with Andy Kluczan, George Jones/Sue Denmead, Donna Carlisle and Jonathan Pachter, the adults of the church will have several new choices for adult education. Among the new choices will be:

The Prodigal God – a small group, mid-week study led by Kathy Teagarden. This study will look at the parable of the prodigal son from a different perspective. Designed for both “curious out-siders and established insiders of the faith, both to those Jesus calls ‘younger brothers’ and to those he calls ‘elder brothers’ in the famous parable . . . .” Come and see your faith anew as Kathy leads us through this study written by Rev. Timothy Keller.

Christian Parenting Class – a Sunday morning class for parents led by Kathy Kephart. This class will help parents and those hoping to be parents learn how to teach their children to grow in their love of Jesus and to maneuver in an increasing secular world.

Listening to Scripture: Strategies for Interpreting the Bible– a small group, mid-week study led by Steve Warren to help us to read and understand the Bible more effectively. This study will touch on things like exploring the historical setting, discovering the literary context, identifying oral and literary forms, analyzing the structure, and scripture in the life of the community of faith. Come learn more in depth about the Bible!

How the Bible Came to Be – Tuesday Night Speaker Series returns on Sept. 23 with a series led by our good friend, Dr. Jim Platt. He will explain such things as how the Bible came together from separate pieces of papyrus and unrelated codicils; why the church chose some writings, while excluding others; who wrote some of the books and letters, were editors involved, and much more. This is a fascinating topic for those interested in scripture and church history.

CommuniTea A Non-Denominational Community Women’s Bible Study Fellowship gathering women of all ages together for the purpose of promoting unity and friendships within the body of Christ, as well as reaching out to the unchurched within our local community.

Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War by Karl Marlantes. The author is a graduate of Yale and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. He served as a Marine in Vietnam where he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, two Navy Commenda-tion Medals for valor and 10 air medals. It took him 30 years to complete the novel. The story follows Second Lieutenant Mellas and his comrades in Bravo Company beginning in 1969. The book describes what it’s like to be a young man at war: the anxiety and anticipation before the first encounter with the enemy; the fear, exhilaration, and brutality of fighting; and the bonds between men, and the agony of losing one’s friends. The book has received posi-tive feedback from well – known authors. When All You’ve Ever Wanted Isn’t Enough: The Search for a Life that Matters by Harold Kushner. Kushner is a gifted writer whose words are meant for any individual. In this book, he ad-dresses a need that is universal and timeless – the wish for a mean-ingful life. He shows us how to live as human beings are meant to live. He helps us redirect our energies toward goals that will bring happiness and fulfillment no matter what our age might be. (The library has some of his other books including The Lord is My Shep-

herd, When Bad Things Happen to Good People and How Good

Do We have to Be? The Monday Readers have read all three.)

A Painted House by John Grisham. This book is a departure from the legal thrillers that Grisham usually writes. Some reviewers think it may be based on the author’s childhood in Arkansas. The novel is about a seven year old boy named Luke Chandler and the year is 1952. Luke’s family has a cotton farm and each year at harvest time, the family hires migrant workers to help pick the crop. One family that is hired is Mexican and the other family is from the hilly parts of Arkansas. Thus begins a summer of mysteries and strange events that cer-tainly have an impact on the young boy’s life. (Recommended by Barb Knight)

The Ingredients of Love by Nicolas Barreau. The main character of this novel is a young French woman who owns a restaurant in Paris. Following a breakup, she buys a book in a shop that actually mentions her and her restaurant. Thus begins her search to meet the author. It’s described as a charming novel about matters of the heart. It’s also described as funny, seductive and quirky.

Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind by Ann B. Ross. Miss Julia is a re-cently bereaved and newly wealthy widow. One day a woman comes to the door with a young boy and tells Miss Julia that the child is the son of Julia’s late husband. All of a sudden, Miss Julia is the guardian of a nine year old boy who turns her life upside down. Plus she finds herself at the center of a scandal in the small Southern town where she lives. Faith and Doubt by John Ortberg. Ortberg, a pastor and author, states that the very nature of faith requires the presence of uncer-tainty. He attempts to trace the line between belief and unbelief. His writings are based on his own struggle with faith and doubt. He feels that God wants all of us – including our doubts. (The li-brary has other good and very readable books by this author.)

The Call to Wonder: Loving God Like a Child by R. C. Sproul Jr. This book is based on the words from Matthew 18:2-3 “Unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” The author is the father of eight children and he asks the reader to take these words of Jesus to heart. Some things the author says “When our family sits down to eat, I envision a cluttered kitchen and dishes needing to be washed. They (his children) see daily bread delivered by their faithful heav-enly Father.” He also poses the questions “Why would anyone not want to become like a child?” “Why wouldn’t we want to learn again how to squeal with delight at simple pleasures?” “Why wouldn’t we rest completely in God, trusting Him with our futures?” He writes about how we can recapture a childlike spirit. The Invisible Mountain: A Journey of Faith by Robert P. Vande Kappelle. The author is from Washington and was College Chaplain and Chair of Religious Studies at W and J. In 1989, he cycled solo cross-country. He rode for the Washington County chapter of Habitat for Humanity. For 42 days, he went ‘Homeless for Habi-tat’ placing himself and his personal needs in the hands of strang-ers he met along the way. This book narrates the account of his ride with all its highs and lows. (The library also has his first non-fiction book Love Never Fails.)

What My Cat Has Taught Me About Life: Meditations for Cat Lovers by Niki Anderson. This book is for cat lovers. Each inter-esting anecdote is followed by meditations for the reader as well as a tip for the proper care of cats. Even those who don’t own cats can enjoy and learn from this book.
