As we are now well into 2018, I wanted to alert you to a few important initiatives that our government has undertaken to help Canadians keep more money in their pockets. In 2016 our Government launched the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) and com-mitted to providing increased support for low to middle-income families with children. The CCB is targeted to families who need it most—low and middle-income families—while higher income families receive lower benefits. As the Member of Parliament for Ottawa—Vanier, I am very pleased to see that our Government was able to strengthen the CCB in 2018 for the hard working families of our riding.

For a single parent of two, this means approximately $560 more this year, tax free for books, skating lessons or to in-vest into a Register Education Savings Plan for their children’s future. Minister Lebouthillier recently an-nounced that the Canada Revenue Agency has introduced new ways to file your taxes, improving the tax-filing experience for Canadians. This means that for 950,000 eligible indi-viduals on low or fixed income, they will be able to file their taxes over the phone. Eligible individuals will be able to file their taxes simply by answering a series of questions over the phone, there are no paper forms to fill out or calculations to make. File My Return is free, secure and easy to use.

Lastly, to help lift thousands of low-income seniors out of poverty, we have introduced the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) top-up. Seniors who live alone will receive an extra $947 per year through GIS, helping 900,000 vulnerable seniors across Canada, of which 70% are women. As always, my staff is here to sup-port your interactions with the federal government. My office is located at 233 Montreal Rd. and is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm (from Monday to Thursday) and 9:00am to 4:30pm (on Friday). If you would like to contact my office, please call 613 992-4766 or send an email to [email protected].

Reducing your home’s carbon foot-print: it’s not just your windows!Various opportunities are available for residents of Ottawa to save money and fight climate change by reducing their energy consumption. Currently, this includes the Green Ontario Fund’s (GreenON) energy-saving program for On-tario residents. In celebra-tion of Earth Day 2018, local environmental organisations are part-nering with the Glebe Community Association (GCA) Environment Com-mittee to host the second Old Home Earth Day Event (OHEDE 2018) on Saturday April 21, 2018 to provide residents with an opportunity to learn and share ways they can con-serve energy, reduce carbon emissions and live more sustainably.Ontario’s new carbon pricing system brought in nearly 2 billion dollars last year, some of which has been used to create GreenON, which is a fund tasked with reducing greenhouse gas pollution in buildings and industry. The most recent addition to this fund is a series of home retrofit rebates for homeowners and renters.

By working with a registered contrac-tor, homeowners can potentially get thousands of dollars back towards

projects such as insulation, draft sealing, and windows in their home. Low-income residents who meet certain criteria can also apply to have energy-saving devices and appliances installed in their home free of charge.

With so many options available, determining the most ef-

ficient ways to reduce your carbon footprint requires the consideration of vari-ous factors. For example, did you know that win-dows are not always the

best way to save money on energy? Instead, a more

cost-efficient way of reducing energy consumption can include

ensuring that your walls and attic have been properly insulated. In this regard, GreenON currently offers ho-meowners rebates of up to $7,200 for insulation of homes built before 1980.

The goal of OHEDE 2018 is to help Ot-tawa residents identify optimal ways to take action to reduce their energy costs and carbon footprint. This event is targeted at all types of residents, in-cluding homeowners and renters, from those who are just starting to think of ways to reduce their energy costs to those who have already undertaken some energy retrofits and are looking for the next step.

OHEDE 2018 will feature information on available grants, energy advisory and design services, and specific topics such as air sealing, insulation, win-dows, mechanical systems and renew-able energy systems. The format of this event will include workshops with home energy experts and neighbours who are able to share their experience with home renovations and energy up-grades, as well as interactive informa-tion displays.

For more information on energy rebates, the GreenON.ca website has an up-to- date directory for all of the provincial programs that residents in Ontario can take advantage of, wheth-er as a homeowner, renter, business-owner or landlord.

The Old Home Earth Day Event will take place at the Glebe Community Centre on Saturday April 21, 2018. Ad-mission is free. For inquiries on how to participate or contribute to the event, please contact: [email protected].

-Susanna Kam & Angela Plant

Susanna and Angela are members of the organising committee for OHEDE 2018.

The City of Ottawa is undertaking a major project identifying buildings, structures and other built resources of cultural heritage value. The ‘Heri-tage Inventory Project’ is a city-wide initiative. City staff are surveying and evaluating Ottawa’s built heritage resources, from the modest workers’ houses of Lowertown, to the fine Arts and Crafts homes in Brantwood Place, to the modernist houses of Glabar Park, and even the numerous bridges that span our city’s many waterways.

The goal of the Heritage Inventory Project is to create certainty around Ottawa’s heritage resources. Properties identified through the project will not be designated under the Ontario Heri-

tage Act, rather they will be added to the City’s Heritage Register. A rigorous update to the City’s Heritage Register will be beneficial for property owners, developers, heritage advo-cates, elected officials, planning staff, community groups and all concerned residents. The research method for the project includes photographing, describing architectural characteris-tics and evaluating thousands of built resources throughout the city.

As we’re moving into the Lindenlea area, we’re asking readers to share information about your properties or other buildings or structures in your neighbourhood. We would love to know who designed your home or the

original use of a particular building. Please connect with the City of Ot-tawa’s built heritage researchers: Avery Marshall and Amber Knowles at [email protected] or say hello if you see us in the neighbour-hood.

More information about the Heritage Inventory Project is available at ottawa.ca/heritageinventory.

The City of Ottawa Heritage Inventory Project uses a GIS software tool to col-lect heritage data on neighbourhood buildings. Readers are invited to get in touch with the authors and share information about their houses.

New bus route serving BeechwoodA new bus route – #17 – is now running in Rideau-Rockliffe. The new route 17 runs between the developing Wa-teridge Village – the former Rockcliffe airbase - and the Rideau Centre, run-ning downtown during morning peak hours and back from downtown to Wateridge in the afternoon peak hours. The route runs along busy thorough-fares such as Rideau Street, Beechwood Avenue, St-Laurent Boulevard and Montreal Road. Those living along this route may find it a valuable addition to their transit options during peak hours. Learn more about the route, schedule and stops at octranspo.com.

Public Art on Maple Island – Call for ArtistsAs part of the (now thankfully finished) redevelopment of the Minto Bridges, a public art piece will be installed on Maple Island on the Rideau River. This island is a serene and hidden green space and together with the bridges it connects New Edinburgh and Low-ertown. The island has a rich history,

I enjoy the chance to meet residents - it’s a great way for me to connect, learn,

exchange ideas and respond to ques-tions. I hope to see you at an upcom-ing First Friday. My team here at City Hall has recently undergone a staffing change, as Jesse Cressman-Dickinson has taken on an exciting new role in the private sector. Starting in 2018, our team now consists of Alexandre LeBlanc, Laura Mueller, Birgit Scheichl and Elizabeth Whyte. They are the friendly voices at the other end of the phone helping residents navigate the various city departments and assisting me in my committee and Council work in order to advance priorities for Rideau-Rock-cliffe and the city. Please visit my website (tobinuss-baum.ca) or call the office at 613-580-2483 to find out more details for the monthly drop-ins and other contact information.

On February 26, Fern Hill School once again became a nucleus of scientific inquiry. The week was peppered with a variety of exciting visits, outings and events:

The Grade 1 class hosted Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo. The kids saw and touched an array of creatures that would make anyone’s skin crawl — all in the name of science!

Grades 2 and 3 took their quest for knowledge to the Museum of Nature, where exhibits captivated their young minds. Grades 1, 2 and 3 also enjoyed a visit from Radical Science for hands-on learning and entertainment.

Scientists in School, dropped in on Grades 4, 5, 6 and 7 to share with students a scientific perspective on a variety of topics, such as sound, light, mathematics, matter, electricity and osteology.

The week was capped off by the an-nual Science Fair. The best and bright-est minds in all of Fern Hill School (basically, all the kids in Grades 3-7) now transformed into scientists, ea-gerly described their findings. Parents were seen entering and leaving the school that day, proud of their chil-dren’s accomplishments and stoically pondering their future as world class academics, NASA engineers, Nobel laureates….

Science week is but one example of Fern Hill’s unique pedagogical ap-proach, combining enriched educa-tional programs with a wide range of extracurricular activities.
