The Vicarage Bishopsteignton Dear Friends, As the New Year begins for everyone involved with school and college, a strange memory comes to mind of being asked to spell ‘receive’. “R-e-c-e-e-v-e” I confidently replied, only to be confounded by the teacher’s correction, “No, r-e-c-i -e-v-e. The ‘i’ is moist, as in ‘onion’.” But disconcerting as that answer is, there are true answers that are even more discomforting. Take a straightforward question such as, “Who is my neighbour?” Jesus responded to that one in a circuitous way, launching into a story about a mugging on Jericho Road (recorded in chapter 10 of Luke’s gospel.) And the answer here is even harder to get our heads round. A neighbour is a generous, merciful person to whoever is in need, with a Godly disregard of any negative cultural expectations. Disciples (‘learners’ in Christ’s school) should be like their teacher, “…learn from me,” Jesus said, “for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” During this month God will provide plenty of ‘school lessons’ in the University of Life for us on being good neighbours. May we respond with confidence in Christ, loving God with all our being, “and our neighbour as ourself.” With love, Stephen. DEVON HISTORIC CHURCHES DAY - Saturday 10th September The money raised on this day each year is the main source of income for the Devon Historic Churches Trust. Unfortunately this year there will be no carload of supporters being sponsored to visit churches but there will be a Coffee Morning with delicious home-made cakes at St. Mary’s, Ideford from 10.00am until 12 noon. Half the money raised goes towards the work of the DHCT which has supported St Mary’s Ideford in the past, the other half going towards the church itself. A.R-J CONFIRMATION There will be a Team Confirmation Service at St John ‘s Church, Bishopsteignton at 10.30 am 27th November: Advent Sunday. If anyone would like to be confirmed then – to be able to receive the bread and wine at Communion – please see the Vicar. EAST AFRICA APPEAL We give thanks for the generosity of all who came and brought, bought and gave to the Christian Aid Event for the East Africa Appeal at our fifth Sunday Service on 31st July. A total of £331.80 (£215.00 collection and £116.80 bring and buy) was raised for our African brothers and sisters. This very generous response seems to reflect the teaching of the day on Jesus’ compassion. Christian Aid is working through its partners in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia by: - providing emergency water tanks and distributing water to the most needy. constructing additional water points and maintaining existing boreholes. paying people a market rate for their remaining cattle so they do not lose everything. distributing animal feed to protect livestock that is so crucial to people's livelihoods. ensuring the administration of newly arriving refugees ensuring severely malnourished

children get to feeding centres. providing water, basic equipment for shelter, and cooking and food rations to new arrivals

in refugee camps. providing food for families who currently are not reached by the World Food Programme

response. providing extra nutrition for malnourished children and pregnant women. helping communities become more resilient to future crises.

Coming home?

As many people already know, I shall be taking a sabbatical during September, October and November. I was ordained priest in 1995 and this is the first time that I have applied for such a period of study, rest and recreation in those 16 years.

A sabbatical is intended to give an opportunity to stand back from day-to-day ministry and reflect; usually a specific goal for the period will be identified. However, there is also an expectation that clergy will take rest and relaxation seriously during their period of leave!

While some people taking a sabbatical use the time to travel to far-flung places or to do something really different (one colleague used the time to build a kit car!) my intentions are more modest. I have always been attracted to Celtic spirituality and decided some time ago that, if the opportunity arose, I would like to take time to study these origins of the Christian faith in the British Isles.

So I shall spend some time exploring Northumbria and especially visiting the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, following in the footsteps of Aiden and Cuthbert. I hope to visit the Northumbria Community and Durham before travelling up to Mull and Iona. Though I am not setting myself the target of any sort of written thesis, I hope to record my journeying (pilgrimage?) in creative ways, combined with lots of reading and rest. Towards the end of the three months I shall attend a conference looking at the tradition of Celtic spirituality throughout the British Isles and some of its insights, particularly how Scripture, prayer and ecology offer food for our present journey. I am also booked on a so-called ‘12,000 mile service’ which will offer an opportunity to reflect on all these experiences in the context of retreat. Marion plans to join me for the first two months as she is taking unpaid leave so that we may enjoy these experiences together.

In my research I have been struck by a comment of The Rev’d Michael Mitton in his excellent book Restoring the Woven Cord – strands of Celtic Christianity for the Church today. As he visited Holy Island and became acquainted with that historic place, he felt it was a homecoming and that “the island and its history connected with a deep longing within… and brought together many different strands of [his] own faith…” Please pray that we might likewise benefit from deep spiritual refreshment and personal renewal. Our Team Vicar, Stephen, will of course keep a watchful eye on the Haldon Team Ministry in my absence and Sue will be first port of call for all ministry and pastoral matters in the Teignmouth churches. My sincere thanks in advance for all the ways in which others will cover extra duties while I am away. Yours in Christ, Graham Stones.

Planning for Growth

Representatives of each parish in our Team Ministry gathered at Bishopsteignton on Thursday 21

st July to get down to the business of forging

a Mission Action Plan. Such a plan is a three to five year Action Plan for Mission in our churches.

We first started on this task in late 2008 and met several times into early 2009. At that time, pressure of other issues forced this vital aspect of planning onto the ‘back burner’.

At a recent Staff Meeting we had discussed the need to recover the momentum of this process and sketched a possible way forward. Sue then very ably led us into this day-long meeting where we shared together our vision for the Mission Community our parishes constitute, considered the specific aspirations and opportunities of each parish and identified those resources that will be needed to support our renewed commitment to worship and witness to the Christian faith we profess throughout our parishes.

Over the coming months the draft plan will be discussed at each PCC in the Haldon Team Ministry and refinements will be incorporated. Each PCC will also consider how best to share the details with each church family so that we can all be fully informed and engaged with the planned priorities. If we get it right, and I am confident that we will finish up with a very useful and practical document, the MAP will give us a clear picture of the ways in which each parish can tackle the business of being agents and ambassadors of the Kingdom of God.

Please join with me in the Mission Action Plan Prayer…

God of new beginnings we pray that you will transform your church as you renew us by your love. Give us vision for the journey that we may travel light and live increasingly by faith. Inspire, enliven and empower us, so that along the Way we may be sustained by the life of Christ in ourselves, in one another and in the world. Amen.

Yours in Christ, Graham Stones. Illustration and prayer courtesy of the Diocese of Blackburn

. VEHICLE SECURITY

Three of the rural villages have recently suffered a spate of vehicle crime and although 2 arrests have been made in connection, it pays not to drop your guard. Those of you with disabled Blue Badges which allow you to park on double yellow lines etc. should keep them out of sight if they are not being used for their intended purpose. There is a market for these items.

Ensure nothing is left on display in your vehicle to include coats, bags, CDs, loose change, shopping etc. If you have a removable sat-nav, then do remove it and any witness marks from the windscreen, and clean the whole screen if it’s dirty rather than leave a clean patch. Consider getting a sat-nav support pad from Halfords which allows sucker free use.

You are advised to empty any work’s van of tools.

Lock your vehicle and use any anti-theft device, including an alarm if fitted.

If you have a garage, use it to park your car. If not, try to park in a well lit area.

If your radio/cd has a removable security panel, remove it.

Consider getting a boot safe for removable items rather than carry them around.

Do not leave vehicle keys visible to car thieves. Modern vehicles can not be ‘hot wired’. The thief needs the key, so may break into your house or ‘fish’ them out of the letterbox if left accessible in the hall.

If you have an older vehicle (pre 1997), check with your garage to see if it has transponder controlled ignition, in which the correct key communicates electronically with the lock to allow starting. If not, consider getting an additional steering wheel locking device from a good motor store.

MESSAGE to IDEFORD DOGS

Most of your owners are responsible and clear up any mess you might make, including dog foul and debris from old balls/toys etc. However, some owners are failing to clear up after you and causing concern to other owners and people with children. Please ensure your owner has a doggy-bag when they take you for a walk and let’s help keep Ideford clean & safe.

RINGING OF BELLS The ringing of bells ‘in peal’, swinging them full-circle with rope and wheel, is a peculiarly English art, and a very ancient one, which developed in the early 17th century and is now spread all over the English-speaking world but nowhere else. Requiring as it does a team of people willing to work together, with calmness, perseverance and a sense of order, it seems to appeal to, and spring from, some special qualities in the English character. It is an art which calls for skill rather than physical strength, a keen ear, and loyalty: like the Christian life, its only standard is a perfection which is never attainable but always striven for, and a good ringer is one who never stops learning or trying to do better – like a good Christian. It produces the most powerful and far-reaching music made by man, and the loudest sound that man makes for no other purpose than the glory of God. In a world full of noises which man makes for his own profit or glorification, this is no small testimony. When bells are rung ‘in peal’, they are swung through a complete circle, first one way and then the other, each bell speaking once in each revolution. Only in this way can the full tone and beauty of the bell be heard, and by changing the order in which the bells are rung a great variety of music can be created. The above was written by the late Prebendary John Scott in his foreword to the service of blessing of the restored bells in St Mary’s Ideford in 1988. If you have taken the time to read it, you might be called to come and join us and keep alive this ancient art. For some months, while St John’s Bishopsteignton has been undergoing renovation, their ringers have joined us in our practices on Thursday evenings so most weeks there have been enough to ring the six bells. However, we are now back to our own resources which are limited as there are many occasions when we aren’t all free and can’t muster six ringers. Why not come and have a go, or, if you are already experienced, come and help us out! Learners welcome, no age limit. Contact Ann on 852344 ([email protected]) for further information

A.C-W TOUR OF BRITAIN CYCLE RACE 2011 The Tour of Britain cycle race returns to Devon on Thursday 15th September 2011. The race is comprised of 16 teams of six cyclists who will race across the county of Devon on Stage 5 of this international event. The race receives global television coverage and is broadcast nationally on ITV4 on the day of the race. The Tour of Britain is the UK’s leading professional cycling race and the biggest spectator event in the country. Last year’s two South West stages saw almost a quarter of a million people turning out along the routes to see the racing and has generated almost £11 million for the economies of Somerset and Devon over the past two years. Starting from Cathedral Yard in Exeter, the Devon stage will push the professional cyclists to their limits as they cover more than 110 miles (180 km) of tough terrain, including Dartmoor National Park, before finishing in Exmouth. The route will take in a number of other communities including Pathfinder Village, Tedburn St Mary, Moretonhampstead, Bovey Tracey, Dartmeet, Postbridge, Bow, Crediton, Broadclyst, Rockbeare and West Hill. Most towns along the route will have rolling road closures, meaning the roads will only be closed whilst the race passes through the town/village. Information on the race route and expected times can all be found by visiting,
