    Just a note from me.

Where did the summer go? It is hard to believe that we are in the month of September

and our church programs are starting back. The next few weeks will prove to be excitingas we prepare to implement our Vision document. Everyone will need to take an activepart in the development of our goals. It will be exciting.

This newsletter is somewhat shorter than previous ones but many of the people whoregularly contribute items did not submit this time. I encourage everyone to drop inarticles or pieces of news about your family.

My thanks goes out to Kaye Diehl, Bryan Lapier, Margaret Lupton, Shirley Weitzel,Suzanne Strahan for their contributions. Just check out the things that these people havesubmitted.

I want to extend our heart-felt sympathy to Pat Scott and family. Marys passing hassaddened us all. She was a wonderful worker at Knox and her great sense of humourendeared her to us all. Keep Pat and his family in your prayers.

    David

    Notes from Session

Session did not meet over the summer but will begin again on September 12. I believe themain focus for the next few months will be the implementation of many of your ideas thatwere the basis for the new Vision Document. You will be receiving a copy of this andyou are asked to read it carefully. Five committees will be formed and everyone isencouraged to volunteer to serve on one. It is only with your participation that we willmove forward and adopt as many of your suggestions as possible.

September 11 is our Back to Church Sunday as we begin our fall season together. Wehope everyone will be back from holidays as you have been missed over the summer. You are asked to bring, or at least invite, someone to join in our service.

    October 2 is Communion.

    Dear Friends at Knox

Twenty three years is a long time when you are a child but when I look back at my time as beingTreasurer of your church it has flown.

I started in the summer of 1988 when Edna MacMillan became ill. During the years I have

witnessed the refurbishing of the Banquet Hall, Kitchen and the Ladies Parlour and kitchenette, the painting and rewiring of the Sanctuary and climbed a ladder to look at the problems AndrewJeffrey had found in the brick work on Ontario Street. None of these projects took place withouta great deal of thought and consideration by the Board. In 1988 the Church was involved in aRestoration campaign under the supervision of hired consultants . Through the years Grantapplications have been filled out for the brick work and electrical upgrading. I must admit thesewere all things that I truly enjoyed and always felt satisfaction in being a part...

The past six months have been very difficult for me personally and I felt it was time for me to sayGood bye to a position I have truly enjoyed. I was deeply honoured the last Coffee Clatch inJune when I was presented with a framed picture The Living Life Tree and a bouquet offlowers. I sincerely appreciate the fact as well that Shelterlink and the Stratford-Perth Museum

will also be remembered by your generosity.

The Verse on the picture goes as follows:Life is not a race - but indeed a journey. Be Honest. Work Hard. Be Choosy. Say "thank you",and "great job" to someone each day. Go to church, take time for prayer. The Lord givith and theLord taketh. Let your handshake mean more than pen and paper. Love your life and what you'vebeen given, it is not accidental ~ search for your purpose and do it as best you can. Dreamingdoes matter. It allows you to become that which you inspire to be. Laugh often. Appreciate thelittle things in life and enjoy them Some of the best things really are free. Do not worry, lesswrinkles are more becoming. Forgive, it frees the soul. Take time for yourself ~ Plan forlongevity. Recognize the special people you've been blessed to know. Live for today, enjoy themoment.

    - This truly is a wonderful verse to live by.

In closing I would be remiss in not saying how lucky Knox is with volunteers. I am going tomention four in particular:- Sue, you have been great to work with, we both think alike and believe in calling a spade aspade.- Pat is one of the most dedicated people I know and his attention to detail is a terrific help- Tim and Eleanor what better Personnel team could an employee work with.

I would like to wish the members of your congregation all the best in the future and I am certainShannon will do a great job as your Treasurer.

    Sincerely

    Ruth Reath

    Knox Music Rocks

OK, folks. Ive been the music director at Knox for some time now. Idont really know how long, because as a musician, I dont count pastfour. But its definitely been long enough to see musical growth anddevelopment which enhances our worship service.

I know you, as well as myself, are all very proud of our stellar choir. They follow me down every musical path I take, which is sometimesrisky. I like to live on the edge, try new things, take myself and mygroups out of our comfort zone from time to time. Thats what keepsour music alive and vibrant.

Praise Explosion has also grown and provided a fresh musical outlet forexpressing our faith. Many people tell me how much they enjoyExplosionSundays. I can tell, because I can see many of you rocking and singingalong with us! This is the perfect group for our youth (and young atheart) to join as singers or instrumentalists. Dont worry about yourskill level. I will arrange the music to suit your level of developmentuntil you become confident to try morechallenging charts.

I know that there are many talented youth and adults in our

congregation who would really enjoy participating in our musicalministry. Nothing would make me happier than to fill the choir loft. With our new sound system coming, theres going to be room for moresingers in Praise Explosion.

Now, imagine what Knox would be like without the music to which wehave become accustomed. To keep it going, we need YOU to getinvolved. Maybe you know someone musical who hasnt found achurch family yet. Encourage them to give us a try. Come and join us,and bring your friends!

Rehearsals begin for choir on September 8 at 7:30 p.m. PraiseExplosion rehearsals begin on September 12 at 6:00 p.m. See youthere!

    Preparing your Garden for Winter

When I flipped the calendar over to September, I had a moment of panic as I stared out atmy gardens and thought I should start preparing them for winter. My mother always toldme that the work I did in the autumn meant that I would save many hours of labour in the

spring. It is still too early to really get into the trimming so enjoy the flowers for a fewmore weeks. Last year I did cut back some perennials too soon and there was some newgrowth and the plants suffered in the winter. If you garden colour is starting to becomedull you can always plant some of the Mums that are beautiful for a fall display.

Here are some ideas of things to do in the early fall.- Edge your perennial beds.- Continue deadheading any daisy-flowered perennials. These will continue

blooming for weeks if you prevent the flowers from forming seeds.- Remove any perennial weeds that have invaded your gardens.- Remove any annual weeds that are going to seed. Throw these weeds out and

do not put them in the compost. You will have hundreds of weeds if youcompost them.

    - Empty your compost bin. Fall is a great time for putting the compost on yourgardens.

    - Check out your garden centre or hardware store for specials on mulch. Youcan spread it out in the fall or store it for the spring.

    - Consider moving your plants around. Remove the dogs to make room forbetter things.

    - Take pictures of your garden and start a scrapbook that will help youremember this season. Successes and failures are important to remember.

    - You can move or divide perennials in the fall. This helps lessen your work in

the spring. It is a good time to move peonies, bearded iris and lilies.

I am a rookie when it comes to gardening and I really rely on tips that my mother gaveme. Experimenting is crucial in developing a great garden. Enjoy.

Take a photo of your garden and we will include it in next months newsletter.

    1NEWS FROM THE ALLEY

The Alley has been a busy place this summer. Besides our regular customers we have

welcomed many tourists. They often have very positive things to say about our store.

Sometimes they ask if they can see the sanctuary of our church. One of our volunteers is

always happy to give a tour.

We held another very successful bag sale. We hold these at the end of the season to clear

out clothing. Our customers love these sales. For $5.00 they fill a bag with clothing.

Volunteers like these sales too as we have less clothing to put away.

The Alley is now full of wonderful fall and winter clothing. If you are looking to add to

    your wardrobe drop in!

We feel good that we have been able to make financial contributions to the church and to

    mission projects.

In June we transferred $11,400.00 to the church.

    Our latest mission projects include:

    $1000.00 to Africa famine relief

$1000.00 to the Goderich tornado fund

These two donations were done through PWSD.

$500.00 to the House of Blessing Backpack program.

We are happy that we can help Knox have this kind of outreach to our

    community and beyond.

When delivering our cheque to the House of Blessing they said it was an answer to their

prayers. They had already prepared 106 backpacks and had just had a call from a mother

who had five children and nothing for them for going back to school.

    THE HISTORY CORNER

Among our historical treasurers, this one is very special for me. The pulpit, elders'benches and ministerial chairs from our Norman Street church are a fine example ofchurch furnishings dating from the 1850's.This is the FIRST of THREE sets of ministerial chairs we have in our sanctuary.I don't imagine there are many congregations like us that have kept old pieces of furnitureand perhaps we can thank our "thrifty" ancestors for retaining them as new pieces weredonated. The refurbished pulpit and chairs now sit in the centre of the west transept where theyserve toremind us of our "roots". After refinishing the pulpit, the refinisher informed methat the pulpit is all hand-carved and no doubt the chairs and elders' benches are as well.Such beautiful craftsmanship!

It is interesting to note that the pulpit has small square shelves on either side wherecandles or coal oil lamps sat to aid in the reading of the Scriptures. One elders' bench issituated on the west wall of the transept, while the other two provide seating in thenarthex.I first remember these pieces when they were used in our CGIT room way up on the thirdfloor of the Sunday school building. They were all covered in "Presbyterian Blue"broadcloth (no doubt to cover the original prickly wine coloured horsehair covering). Before that, I believe they were used in the senior Sunday school until the great fire of1913. After the fire, they were replaced by the pulpit and chairs recovered from the

burned out sanctuary and thus made their home in the CGIT room. After CGIT disbanded, they were put away in a storage area and by the time ourEmbroidery Guild found them in the 1990's they were in an unbelievable state ofdisrepair. It is amazing how refinishing the wood and reupholstering them in needlepointturned them from "junk" and into magnificent church furnishings. The design on the back of the minister's chair is the "Crown and Cross" while the seatdesign is the "Shield of the Trinity". The beautiful needlework was done by Rena Tuerand the chair was re-dedicated in memory of her husband, Wilfred Tuer.

The two side chairs both carry the "Communion" theme. Both seats have identicaldesigns of grapes encircled with stalks of wheat and were stitched by the late RuthBallantyne. The back of one chair has a silver chalice, with grapes, stitched by FlorenceLandreth, while the other chair has a sheaf of wheat with a broken piece of bread, stitchedby myself. In 1998, the Guild rededicated both chairs in memory of Ruth Ballantyne. One of these side chairs would have been used each Sunday by the Precentor, who wouldlead in the singing of the Psalms. There was no great organ or choir in those long ago

days, in fact there were no Hymns. Back then, we Presbyterians were called "Psalmsingers"!I hope you will take a few minutes some Sunday, after Service, and view these beautiful, historical pieces.

    Can You Install Love?

Customer Service Rep: Can you install LOVE?

Customer: I can do that. I'm not very technical, but I think I am ready to install now. What do I do first?

CS Rep: The first step is to open your HEART. Have you located your HEART ma'am?

Customer: Yes I have, but there are several programs running right now. Is it okay toinstall while they are running?

CS Rep: What programs are running ma'am?

Customer: Let me see.... I have PASTHURT.EXE, LOWESTEEM.EXE,GRUDGE.EXE, and RESENTMENT.COM running right now.

CS Rep: No problem. LOVE will automatically erase PASTHURT.EXE from yourcurrent operating system. It may remain in your permanent memory, but it will no longerdisrupt other programs. LOVE will eventually overwrite LOWESTEEM.EXE with amodule of its own called HIGHESTEEM.EXE. However, you have to completely turnoff GRUDGE.EXE and RESENTMENT.COM. Those programs prevent LOVE frombeing properly installed. Can you turn those off ma'am?

Customer: I don't know how to turn them off. Can you tell me how?

CS Rep: My pleasure. Go to your Start menu and invoke FORGIVENESS.EXE. Do this

as many times as necessary until GRUDGE.EXE and RESENTMENT.COM have beencompletely erased.

Customer: Okay, I'm done. LOVE has started installing itself automatically. Is thatnormal?

CS Rep: Yes it is. You should receive a message that says it will reinstall for the life ofyour HEART. Do you see that message?

Customer: Yes I do. Is it completely installed?

CS Rep: Yes, but remember that you have only the base program. You need to beginconnecting to other HEARTS in order to get the upgrades.

Customer: Oops...I have an error message already. What should I do?

CS Rep: What does the message say?

  • 8/4/2019 Newsletter So 2011

    16/24

Customer: It says "ERROR 412 - PROGRAM NOT RUN ON INTERNALCOMPONENTS." What does that mean?

CS Rep: Don't worry ma'am, that's a common problem. It means that the LOVE programis set up to run on external HEARTS but has not yet been run on your HEART. It is one

of those complicated programming things, but in non-technical terms it means you haveto "LOVE" your own machine before it can "LOVE" others.

Customer: So what should I do?

CS Rep: Can you find the directory called SELFACCEPTANCE"?

    Customer: Yes, I have it.

CS Rep: Excellent, you are getting good at this.

    Customer: Thank you.

CS Rep: You're welcome. Click on the following files and then copy them to the "MYHEART" directory: FORGIVESELF.DOC, SELFESTEEM.TXT,REALIZEWORTH.TXT and GOODNESS.DOC. The system will overwrite anyconflicting files and begin patching any faulty programming. Also, you need to deleteSELFCRITIC.EXE from all directories, and then empty your recycle bin afterwards tomake sure it is completely gone and never comes back.

Customer: Got it. Hey! My HEART is filling up with really neat files. SMILE.MPG isplaying on my monitor right now and it shows that WARMTH.COM, PEACE.EXE, and

CONTENTMENT.COM are copying themselves all over my HEART!

CS Rep: Then LOVE is installed and running. You should be able to handle it from here. One more thing before I go...

    Customer: Yes?

CS Rep: LOVE is freeware. Be sure to give it and its various modules to everybody youmeet. They will in turn share it with other people and they will return some really neatmodules back to you.

Customer: I will. Thank you for your help.
