A nne Frank personifies the Holocaust to the millions who have read her diary, so her story is a unique tool to teach about the consequences of intolerance, racism and discrimination, and to inspire the next generation to build a world based upon mutual respect. During Anne’s years in hiding, her exposure to the outside world was limited to the tree outside her window. “From my favorite spot on the floor, I look up at the blue sky and the bare chestnut tree, on whose branches little raindrops shine, appearing like silver,” she wrote. “When I looked outside right into the depth of nature and God, then I was happy, really happy.” Watching the tree cycle through the seasons offered Anne hope that one day humanity also would have another chance. Anne Frank’s chestnut tree has reached the end of its 150-year lifespan, but it will live on through saplings planted around the world. Named FundsA Special Way to Give Tribute to a Loved one

Hilda Winsen worked at the Mumford High School bookstore and always enjoyed reading, so after her untimely passing in a 1996 auto accident, her brother Leon Siegel and sister Gertrude

Feldman established a Library Fund in her memory. Income from the fund is used to purchase important reference materials for our Library Archive. The fund has made possible significant acquisitions, immeasurably enhancing our collection.Over the years, the Siegel and Feldman families and their friends added to the fund through tribute gifts for special occasions or commemorations. When former Hampton Elementary School teacher Gertrude Feldman passed away last year, the fund was renamed the Winsen/Feldman Library

Fund. The memory of both sisters is now perpetuated in this meaningful manner.“The Holocaust Memorial Center and its Library Archive are very important to our community,” Leon Siegel says. Mr. Siegel, who is a retired real estate broker and a Korean War veteran, has been a member of the Center since it first opened. We thank him and Mrs. Siegel for their decades of support and their commitment to our educational mission!Named Funds are a way for you to designate your support for your specific area of interest, such as education, operations, exhibits, survivor testimony, docent training or special programming. You can name a fund with your own name, or in memory or in honor of a loved one. For more information on setting up a fund, please contact Cheryl Guyer at 248.553.2400 ext. 23 or [email protected]. Educating the Next Generationyour Generosity at Work

Each year, nearly 50,000 students visit the Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus. Their

token admission fees do not cover the cost of operating the center. Your gifts are what make their visits possible. Thank you!The geographic diversity of our visitors is astounding! Just since the beginning of this school year in September, groups have visited from these Michigan, Ohio and Ontario cities, including some you may not even have known existed. A

Thanks to your support, students from all over Michigan

are learning why they must fight prejudice and stand up for

the rights of others.

one of the last in existence, the Holocaust-era boxcar arrives from Germany on September 22, 2011.

Steven, Alvin, Henrietta and Lori Weisberg (left to right) break the ground for the Weisberg Gallery on August 29, 2012.

on September 24, 2012, the boxcar is lifted into the

Weisberg Gallery.

A Few Personal reflections As we reach milestones in our lives,

we reflect on the significance of the events that affect us. Like many of you, I am at a place in my life when material gifts take on less importance than the thought that I may have a place in a friend’s life; and, even as the inevitable losses that we all experience occur, I now, more than ever, appreciate the kind words of a friend or colleague.

So a contribution as a get-well wish is the nicest card that I could get; same, too, for a birthday or a mazel tov [congratulations] on a special occasion (grandkids come to my mind!) and, perhaps most significant, is the hopeful blessing that comes when I have suffered a loss and a card arrives, even from afar, noting that a gift has been made to the Holocaust Memorial Center in memory of that loss.

A tribute card from the Holocaust Center is a rare opportunity to perform both tzedakah [charity] and tikkun olam [helping to repair the world] with one contribution, and to make a friend, co-worker, relative or even a mere acquaintance feel that you have remembered and that you are thinking of them.

You can make a tribute gift by mail, by calling 248.553.2400 ext. 29 or by visiting www.holocaustcenter.org. Make someone happy and remember – a gift of charity returns tenfold. A

Have you named us in your will? If so, please call

Beth Snider at 248.553.2400, ext. 21 to let us know.

The Weisberg Gallery – named in memory of

Henrietta Weisberg and rachel Schwartz’s parents Sara and Israel Gastfrajnd

and brothers rubin and Hershel Gastfrajnd, who were

murdered in the Holocaust – is now open to the public.

Dear Holocaust Memorial Center,I am writing regarding my visit on November 7, 2012 with my American History class. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank docents Steve Frank and Paul Schneider for their time. They did an excellent job conveying

the information and engaging the students.

I also would like to give a special thanks to Holocaust Survivor Speaker Michael Weiss. He had a profound impact on the students, giving them an experience they will not soon forget. Thank you again for

everything, and I look forward to bringing

more students in the future.

Sincerely,Shannon D’Agostino Trenton High School

places.” Little did anyone imagine that they were experiencing only the beginning of what was to come. Nazi Germany was eventually overrun by the Allies as quoted, but not before the unprecedented destruction.

do you have objects of historical interest?

Our Library Archive is fast becoming a repository of Jewish historical artifacts from which we document the Center’s exhibits.

Background information about each item is carefully recorded upon arrival, and it is through these conversations that the historical significance is often revealed. All objects are housed, stored and displayed in safe, acid-free and temperature-controlled environments under video surveillance, with museum labels acknowledging the generosity of our donors. Letters of acknowledgement are sent to our donors for tax purposes.

Tens of thousands of visitors view our museum displays annually. When our donors and their children or grandchildren come back to visit, they are gratified and often overwhelmed at how their artifacts are being used to educate the public. Donors do not have to travel or make an appointment to see what they contributed, as we are open six days a week and conveniently located.

We are always prepared to accept additional materials. If you have a question as to whether an item would be appropriate for inclusion, please call Feiga Weiss at 248.553.2834. A

New in the Library Archive! We are very pleased to announce that the Jewish Heritage Collection,

headed by Michigan resident Constance Harris, has donated a very special edition of the Bible in honor of her dear grandchildren. It was the last Hebrew Bible published in Nazi Germany, one of the most beautiful printed bibles in the history of Jewish printing. Hamishe Humshe Torah was published by the Soncino Society Friends of Jewish Books in Berlin in 1933. No expense was spared and the final product justified their efforts. Special fonts and vowels were created to match the 1526 Prague Haggadah, another example of exemplary Hebrew book-making. As the last few pages were being printed, Hitler’s rise to power cast a menacing shadow on the future of German Jewry. The proverbial

“handwriting on the wall” was evident and the publishers decided to print in red certain passages they felt were

relevant to the current situation. One of those bolded passages at the end of Deuteronomy

(33:29) was: “Your enemies shall become weak and you shall tread on their high

From Generation To Generation I want to reflect on the concept of Dor L’Dor, from generation to

generation, a principle that has always been at the heart of the Jewish people.

Our community is blessed with so many parents and grandparents who have been a remarkable inspiration through their teachings and zest for life. We’ve witnessed the rebuilding of their lives and the hope that they inspire, despite vivid memories of the atrocities they endured.

As the dark days of the Holocaust become more distant, I often ponder what we collectively can do to assure that the suffering and resilience of our parents, grandparents, family and friends do not become a faded or forgotten memory. Of course, it is our unwavering duty to help prevent future genocides. But that’s not all. It is also essential that we educate our children so they can carve a path for the generations to come. We owe our children and grandchildren not only the necessary knowledge, but also the viability of an institution based on the premises of reflection, education and tolerance.

Don’t take the Holocaust Memorial Center for granted. Rather, regard it as an accessible crown jewel. We are responsible to see that the work of the Holocaust Memorial Center continues long after we are no longer able to do it. Whether through volunteering, becoming a docent, supporting it financially or through estate planning, it is ours and we must keep it in our family, in the spirit of Dor L’Dor, for many generations to come.
