The time is changing with jet speed for textile industries and it is essential to remain update continuously by introducing innovations and creativity in products and processes development. The global market is demanding today for environment-friendly product and simultaneously socio-economically sound industrial production of textiles. Indian textile industry has tremendous potential to go green. It is therefore essential to emphasize on the environmental issue and become our common endeavor to take appropriate measures and give adequate response to encourage green textile Industrial evolution by way of promoting Organic Cotton, Eco- friendly dyes and finishing chemicals, waste minimization , use of biotechnology in textile product development and recycling of waste generated from textile fibre and processing to ensure the cleaner environment and sustainable development of this developing country. There is no easy solution to this complex environmental issue but the comprehensive integrated approach to tackle the problem in collaboration with industry, research organization, educational institutions and various government and non government organization is essential in this regard to provide knowledge about the latest eco manufacturing technologies and a safe environment to the society. EDITORIAL

Plants, Products and People have an inseparable bond. This is absolutely true

with relation to textiles. This 'Sun rise” industry encompasses large, medium and

cottage scale activities spread all over the country. This is a employment

generating but contribute to the national economy. Textile industry produces

diverse range of products from textile fibre, cloth, garment and technical textiles

for domestic and export markets.

The time is changing with jet speed for textile industries and it is essential to

remain update continuously by introducing innovations and creativity in

products and processes development. The global market is demanding today for

environment-friendly product and simultaneously socio-economically sound

industrial production of textiles.

Indian textile industry has tremendous potential to go green. It is therefore

essential to emphasize on the environmental issue and become our common

endeavor to take appropriate measures and give adequate response to encourage

green textile Industrial evolution by way of promoting Organic Cotton, Eco-

friendly dyes and finishing chemicals, waste minimization , use of biotechnology

in textile product development and recycling of waste generated from textile fibre

and processing to ensure the cleaner environment and sustainable development

of this developing country.

There is no easy solution to this complex environmental issue but the

comprehensive integrated approach to tackle the problem in collaboration with

industry, research organization, educational institutions and various

government and non government organization is essential in this regard to

provide knowledge about the latest eco manufacturing technologies and a safe

environment to the society.

International Seminar on “ORGANIC TEXTILES : ENSURING PRODUCT INTEGRITY”th12 March 2010, Hotel ITC Maratha, Sahar, Andheri (E), Mumbai – 400 099

The Textile Association (India), Mumbai Unit organized the International Seminar on 12th March 2010 at Hotel ITC Maratha, Mumbai. The theme of the Seminar was “Organic Textiles : Ensuring Product Integrity”.

Mr. Mahendra Tanna, Vice-President, TAI, Mumbai Unit welcomed the Chief Guest, Mr. Dilip Jiwrajka, Managing Director, Alok Industries Ltd., Guest of Honour Mr. B. K. Patodia, Chairman & Managing Director, G. T. N. Textiles Ltd. He also welcomed Key Note Speaker Mr. Shreyaskar Chaudhary, Managing Director, Pratibha Syntex Pvt. Ltd., Guest Mr. Sushil Sain.

Mr. C. Bose, President, TAI, Mumbai delivered the presidential address and highlighted the importance of the present event.

Mr. V. C. Gupte Chairman, TAI, Mumbai Unit and Convener of the seminar gave the brief of the event. He said that 2 years ago TAI, Mumbai Unit organized the international seminar on the same topic. The overwhelming response to that event and the fact that India has reached to the leading position in the cultivation of organic cotton. These reasons initiated the Mumbai Unit to organize second seminar on the same subject within two years.

Mr. B. K. Patodia, Chairman & Managing Director, G.T.N. Textiles Ltd. while addressing the delegates said that the industry needs to gear up to meet the requirements of the trade in terms of quality of the products and eco-friendly goods.

Mr. Shreyaskar Chaudhary, Managing Director, Pratibha Syntex Pvt. Ltd, emphasized on the importance of cluster development to organize organic cotton cultivation so that the supply chain can be managed as per GOTS certification.

Mr. Dilip Jiwrajka, Managing Director, Alok Industries Ltd., in his inaugural address said that the organic textiles industry's growth is going to be very positive and the industry should gear up for the development and expansion. He also highlighted the initiatives taken by the one of the NGO “Zameen”. The response from the farmers is very proactive and will lead to a significant growth.

As per the precedent of Felicitating two professionals for the outstanding contribution to the textile industry, The Textile Association, Mumbai Unit felicitated Mr. Sushil Sain, Ex. CMD, NTC Ltd. and also Past President, TAI as well as Mumbai Unit, with Life-Time Achievement Award. The second felicitation was of Mr. Rajendra Agarwal, Managing Director, Donear Industries Ltd. with conferring “Industrial Excellence Award”. Mr. Agarwal was unable to attend the seminar and hence the award was received by his daughter Ms. Ruchi Agarwal, Director, D'cot – A Division of Donear on his behalf.

In all, 7 technical papers were presented during the seminar.

Mr. Manohar Parchure, one of the progressive farmer from Nagpur, Maharashtra presented the paper on “Perspectives of Organic Cotton – Farmer's Views”.

Dr. C. D. Mayee, Chairman, Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board (ICAR) made presentation on “Indian Initiatives towards organic cotton”.

Dr. Binay Kumar Choudhury, Certifier, Control Union Certification, India presented the paper on “Control Union Certifications - Your partner in certification”.

Dr. Annegret Vester, Head of Marketing, CHTR, Beitlich, GmbH, Germany made the presentation on “Organic Cotton- more than a Fashion Trend?”.

Dr. John Eston, Ecological Solutions Manager, Dystar, Germany could not make up to present his paper. This paper was presented by Mr. V. R. Sai Ganesh, Head of Business Devpt., Dystar on “DyStar–Ensuring Product Integrity and Safety in Organic Textiles “.

Mr. Michael Andrew Kininmonth, Business Development Manager, Lenzing Fibers, Austria was also not able to attend the seminar and hence his paper “Sustainability – a fiber producers perspective” was presented by Mr. Avinash Mane from Lenzing.

Mr. Ton Kaarsgaren, Farbotex Srl, Italy made a presentation on “Innovative Green Technology for wet Processing of Textiles”.

The last session began with Panel Discussion, which was moderated by Mr. Rahul Bhajekar COO Texalab Laboratories Mumbai. The distributed panel comprised of Mr. Amit Shah, CEO Amit Group, Mr. A. K. Prasad, Country Head, Clariant Chemicals (India) Ltd., Dr. P. V. S. M. Gouri, Adviser, APEDA, Dr. Reena Aggarwal, Assistant Professor, NIFT and Mr. Vikram Chitnis, Trading Manager, Shoppers Stop. The theme of the panel discussion was “Brand India: An Organic Revolution”. There was marathon interaction between participants, who and the panel members. The members answered all the questions very promptly. It was a very interesting and memorable session. The delegates were intensely involved till the end of the panel discussion.

The Seminar was a grand success and was attended by over 300 delegates.

Half Day Seminar on

NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR BHIWANDI PROCESSORSth26 August 2010, Shangrila Resort & Water Park, Bhiwandi, Dist. Thane

The Textile Association (India), Mumbai Unit organized a Half Day Seminar on "New Opportunities for Bhiwandi Processors” in Bhiwandi on August 26, 2010. Mr. S. Balaraju, Jt. Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India was the Chief Guest and Mr. Vinod Khetrapal, Director, Bombay Crimpers Pvt. Ltd. was the Guest of Honour.

Mr. V. C. Gupte, Chairman, TAI, Mumbai Unit welcomed the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, the speakers and all the participants.

Mr. C. Bose, President, TAI, Mumbai Unit delivered the presidential address and highlighted the importance of this event as the same was organized in Bhiwandi.

Mr. Arun K. Narkar, Jt. Hon. Secretary, TAI, Mumbai Unit and Convener of this seminar gave the brief of the event. The Govt.'s initiation in Textile Clusters Development program inspired him to organize this seminar in Bhiwandi. The main aim to organize this Seminar in Bhiwandi was the Technical Upgradation in processing and also bringing the awareness to global challenges like pollution control / eco norms and safety. Keeping in mind the need of Bhiwandi region the papers were decided with the discussions with the local technicians.

Mr. Vinod Khetrapal, Director, Bombay Crimpers Pvt. Ltd. who I also a Vice President of Bhiwandi Textile Processors Association expressed his happiness being for organizing this seminar in Bhiwandi and thanked TAI, Mumbai Unit for the same. He said that this seminar has given opportunities for the interactions between textile technicians and dyestuffs & chemicals manufacturers. This interaction will lead to solve the technical problems and to improve quality to the required standards. He requested to TAI, Mumbai Unit to organize such seminars with regular intervals and advised processors to take benefit of the same. Mr. Khetrapal said that Bhiwandi is potential territory for shirting and there is lot of scope for infrastructure / ecological improvements.

Mr. S. Balaraju, Jt. Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India in his inaugural address said that for survival in today's competition the development is crucial in the textile processing industry. He said that there is need for modernization of processing machines and technical upgradation to stand against upcoming challenges. Govt. has already brought some schemes for the development of the processing industry. Technological Upgradation Fund (TUF) Scheme amounting Rs. 8000 /- crore was completed within a record span of three years. The Ministry of Textiles has launched another programme “Integrated Skill Development Scheme” with the primary mandate of enhancing, supporting Institutions to build capacity for skill development. The government will bare average cost of Rs. 7300 /- per trainee for this programme. The Govt. will bare 75% of the total cost of this project, and balance 25% will be borne by Industry.

Mr. Balaraju appealed that associations like TAI should have joint venture with Govt. for the training program in Bhiwandi to take benefits of the newly introduced skill development scheme. Mr. Balaraju also brought to the notice that Coimbatore Cluster is running with 50% efficiency due to effluent pollution problem. According to Mr. Balaraju, there are 4500 processing units all over India with no registered association. He suggested that the region wise textile associations should be set up to take care of the regional problems.

In all, 7 technical papers were presented during the seminar.

Mr. Errol Fernandes, Asst. Manager, Business Development (Exhaust), DyStar India Pvt. Ltd. presented the paper on New Developments in Cotton Yarn Dyeing.

Mr. Chirag Panchigar, Product Manager (Polyester Dyes), Colourtex Industries Ltd. made presentation on One Bath Dyeing of Polyester / CDP Blended fabric.

Mr. Parag Kamde, General Manager Sales-West, CHT (India) Pvt. Ltd. presented the paper on Value added finishes for Cotton and Blended Fabrics.

Mr. Pravin More, Dy. General Manager (Tech. & Mktg.), Jaysynth Impex Ltd. made the presentation on Water Source / Crisis and New Technology in Dyeing and Printing.

Mr. Pranav Gayatri, General Manager, Sales - West and Head of Dyeing Auxiliary, Clariant Chemicals (India) Ltd. made the presentation on Pollution Control and Eco Friendly Products.

Mr. G. V. Kakde, Retired Jt. Director Industries, ICC, Dept. Industrial Safety & Health, Govt. of Maharashtra explained about Safety in Textile Processing Industry.

Mr. V. C. Gupte, Head–Colour Business, Advanced Graphic Systems made the presentation on Importance of Computer Colour Matchings.

There was good interaction between participants, who posed many questions to the speakers and the same were answered very promptly by them.

Mr. A. V. Mantri, Hon. Secretary, TAI, Mumbai Unit proposed a vote of the thanks.

The Seminar was grand success and was attended by over 150 participants.

Mr. C. Bose and Mr. R. R. Gosai will receive the awards during the forthcoming 66th All India Textile Conference to be held on 28th & 29th January 2011 at Bangalore.

Obituary

4th September 2010 was a black day in the history of The Textile Association (India), Mumbai Unit. The Hon. Treasurer, Shri Shailesh

M. Dalal was on his way to his office, BTRA and suddenly had a massive heart attack. He was rushed to the nearby Hospital but

passed away even before getting the medical aid.

The shocking news reached our office in the afternoon and nobody was ready to believe the same as we had spoken to him previous

evening and Mr. Dalal had promised that he will be coming to the Mumbai Unit office tomorrow evening. His visit to the Mumbai Unit

Office never turned up as he left for Heavenly Aboard keeping everybody in a state of shock.

Mr. Dalal was a very active member of The Textile Association (India). He served TAI, Mumbai Unit as its Managing Committee

member from 1991 to 1993 and Governing Council member from 1993 to 2001 and also from 2007 onwards. He also served Central

Office as Jt. Hon. Gen. Secretary from 1993 to 2001. Since 2007 Mr. Dalal was the Hon. Treasurer of TAI, Mumbai Unit. His

suggestions took the balance sheet of Mumbai Unit to the glory.

He was awarded Direct FTA (Fellow of Textile Association) and a Service Memento of The Textile Association (India) for the year 2009.

His Public Relation skills were truly marvelous and that in fact helped the Textile Association to nurture and sustain the support. Though

he was a technical expert from the field of Textile he had tremendous knowledge of accounts.

Mr. S. M. Dalal was B.Text from V.J.T.I., Mumbai University. After having worked in reputed textile mills in Mumbai viz. Morarjee Textiles Ltd., Mafatlal Industries Ltd., Finlay

Group of Mills at various positions for a period of around 6 years, he joined Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA), Mumbai in 1979. He rose from a level of Senior

Technical Assistant to Chief Textile Technologist in BTRA. Lastly he was Head of Operations Studies Division.

Shri S. M. Dalal a man of the masses who truly had a special place in the hearts of many Textile Professionals is no more with us but his memories will always inspire us in

thThe condolence meeting was held on Friday, 24 September 2010 to pray the respects to Mr. Dalal. The God must have given the everlasting peace to such a wonderful

soul.

Late Shri Shailesh M. Dalal(11.01.1951 to 04.09.2010)

Due to the sad & sudden demise of Mr. S. M. Dalal the Hon. Treasurer’s

position became vacant. In the Managing Committee & Governing

Council meeting held on 11th October 2010, Mr. M. B. Naimbiar was

unanimously elected as the Hon. Treasurer for the remaining period of

2009-2011. Mr. Nambiar will also occupy the Governing Council

Members post which was held by Mr. Dalal.

Mr. R. R. Mehta, a Managing Committee member was unanimously

elected Jt. Hon. Secretary in place of Mr. M. B. Nambiar for the remaining

period of 2009-2011.
