    The Storm

    There are numerous similarities between the nature of a storm and one’s struggle to obtain sexual freedom. This is illustrated in Kate Chopin’s short story “The Storm.” Through the two main characters, Calixta, a married woman, and Alcee, a married man, Kate Chopin is able to portray the vast parallels between a storm and a sexual affair that did not hurt anyone. The essential theme and point that the author is trying to convey in this short story is love. Both Calixta and Alcee contently married and seemingly in love but both characters seek that one last rush that accompanies sexual freedom. Although the reignited passion between the two characters is short-lived, it is exactly they need to return to their families with a new sense of appreciation; “Calix-ta was preparing supper. She had set the table and was dripping coffee at the hearth. She sprang up as they came in” (Chopin 531). This shows Calixta’s renewed love for her family. In the short story, “The Storm,” there are parallels between the intensity of the storm and the building passion between these two ex-lovers. The first noticeable parallel between the two is that Calixta notices the nearly black clouds quickly approaching and she becomes very frightened. As she is hastily cleaning up, Alcee arrives almost as if he was coming to her rescue. Another parallel is that moments before these two characters finally reignite their love through a passionate encounter, the storm is reaching its worst point;

    “A bolt struck the old chinaberry tree at the edge of the field. It filled all visible space with a blinding glare and the crash seemed to invade the very boards they stood upon. Calixta put her hands to her eyes, and with a cry staggered backward. Alcee’s arm encircled her, and for an instant he drew her close and spasmodically to him” (Chopin 529).

    The Final Parallel between the two is that as the storm comes to an end so does the sporadically re-ignited passion which they endure; “The rain was over; and the sun was turning a glistening green world into a palace of gems. Calixta, on the gallery, watched Alcee ride away” (Chopin 531). As the storm was building up so was the passion these two individuals were sharing but as the storm comes to an end so does the last of the passion these ex-lovers might ever share. Kate Chopin uses numerous symbols and a leitmotif to convey a point. The Leitmotif that Kate Chopin uses is the color white. Kate Chopin uses the color white to convey Calixta’s purity: “The door stood open, and the room with its white, monumental bed, its closed shutters, looked dim and mysterious” (Chopin 529). It is clear that Chopin is trying to illustrate Calixta’s purity because after the affair Chopin does not affiliate Calixta with the color white anymore. Also when Bobinot buys the shrimp for Calixta, it represents his love and concern for her. Bobinot did not have to buy the shrimp for his wife but chooses to showing he cares. Another symbol she uses is as Alcee first rides in he take in Bobinot’s trousers. This is symbolic of Alcee replacing Bobinot as Calixta’s husband. The final Symbol Chopin uses in this short story is when Bibi is muddy; “He scraped the mud off Bibi’s bare legs and feet with a stick and carefully removed all traces from his heavy brogan” . The mud is symbolic of Calixta soling her marriage with her affair. The author’s use of Calixta and Alcee vividly portrays two contently married individuals last attempt at sexual freedom. The Storm is a perfect parallel to the rising intimacy the two characters share.

    This is a re-make of the August edition of the Fantasy Football 2012 Draft Guide. The recre-ation of this magazine cover was done strictly for education-al purposes. During the process of re-creating this magazine cover I had to pay very close attention to its detail and was able to succefully recreate it us-ing an array of different tools and skills. In order to complete this project i had to become very familiar with tools such as the layers, the crop tool,the font tool, the grouping tool, stroke, drop shadow, and other tools that proved to be very useful.

  • This is a re-make of the How Social Sites Make Money info-graphic. Please note that this re-creation was made strictly for educational purposes.In order to sucessfully re-create this infograpic i had to master an ar-senal of skill in Ado-be Illustrator. Some of these skills or tools consist of transparency to replicate the circles in the middle, texture to replicate the same background, gradient to give the infograpic the fade at the bottom which i found to im-prove it’s look, drop shadow to add more artisitc affects to the infographic, pathfinder to replicate shapes that I was unable to find, and the curved line to make the piece look more professional.
