Session I - TCI&ESA: The State of Food and Agriculture 2012: Investing in Agriculture
Space 4A+B
Organizers: Jakob Skoet, ESA; Eugenia Serova, TCID
The SOFA 2012 will focus on investments in agriculture. It will address an audience of policy makers, civil society, media and researchers on the importance of agricultural investments for food security and poverty alleviation. It will discuss how investments in agriculture can be promoted and made more effective. TCI - with its wealth of country experience on investments - can make a key contribution to improving the focus and contents of the report.

The purpose of this session is to identify and consider priorities that might guide design of agribusiness and agro-industries investment programmes. The session will cover: FAO member views on policy priorities related to agribusiness and agro-industries development, AGS views on priority action areas for investment programmes related to agribusiness and agro-industries; an example of a specific, on-going “food systems development” programme, and consideration of three unresolved issues impacting on priority setting for support to agribusiness and agro-industries
Speaker: Doyle Baker, AGS

Space 3C
Organizers: Nicholas Chapman, TCID; Mohamed Manssouri, TCID
There is a need to develop better quality enhancement and assurance systems for TCI to meet its strategic objectives. So far 9 different assignments have piloted various quality procedures. The results have been mixed but there are some useful findings. What elements can be now be introduced as a standard tool for all TCI work in the future? What remains to be further tested, and what challenges are for TCI to adopt an appropriate quality system?
Moderator: Garry Smith, TCID
Speakers: Nicholas Chapman, TCID; Mohamed Manssouri, TCID

Space 4A+B
Organizers: Peter Wobst, ESWD; Garry Smith, TCID
The presentation will highlight the importance of rural employment and decent work within FAO and the UN system for the achievement of sustainable reduction of poverty and increased food security. Particular emphasis will be given
IMP AGENDA SHARING.indd 7 09/12/10 18:03
to the significance of reflecting rural employment and decent work concerns within investment planning.
The session is supposed to contribute to a comprehensive understanding of FAO’s corporate mandate concerning rural employment issues, the related work areas and the need for reflection of rural employment and decent work issues in the design and implementation of investment projects and programmes.

Session VI - Agro-Industries for Development: “Quick Start” Strategies for Investment Programme
Space 4C+D
Organizers: Doyle Baker, AGS; Emmanuel Hidier, TCIN
The session will be devoted to two “case studies”, which illustrate key roles agribusiness and agro-industries can play in addressing key development priorities. Both cases also point to key intervention areas that might be covered in an investment programme depending on the developmental goal(s) of the programme. The intention is to “make the case” that agro-industries can play important roles in achieving broader developmental goals, and to provide TCI staff with indicative “quick start” strategies for investment programmes design.
Moderator: Doyle Baker, AGS
Speakers: Divine Njie, AGS, Opportunities for food losses reduction through agro-industries development

Session VI - TCI&AGN: Investing in water: food safety implications
Space 1
Organizers: Renata Clarke, AGNS; Ida Christensen, TCIO
Ensuring reliable access to clean sources of water is an overriding global challenge of this century. Availability of clean water is not only a fundamental pre-requite for human life, but also a necessary element for achieving Food Security and Food Safety due to the intimate correlation of water with all aspects of food production, preparation, distribution and consumption. Yet the magnitude, intensity and diversity of water pollution continue to grow, reducing the availability of clean, usable water and raising the potential for water crisis that would have a severe impact on food related processes.
Exploring different approaches for water management and investing in new technological solutions for water purification, will be therefore necessary steps to be taken in the way forward ensuring clean water and safe food for the world population.
