The masthead is located in the top left hand corner of the magazine. The fact that they have located it there makes it easier to recognise when it is stacked on the shelves. The colours represent the traditional colours of the magazine, They are bright red so they automatically stand out to the reader.

The use of the grab quote allows the reader to see what the article is related to. By putting this is bold letters they can attract the reader straight off. Again sticking to sans serif fonts they appeal for simplicity. This could appeal to any age between around 16-30.

The main cover line is anchoring the main image. By doing this they are showing the reader what the main point of this magazine is. If they anchor it to the main image will show importance. The fact that the font of the main cover line is a sans serif font shows that they are appealing to there audience of a predominantly middle brow target.

The Barcode is located in the bottom left so it does not take away from the traditional feel of the magazine

The footer shows names of artists that will also feature in the magazine. By putting them on the cover shows that they are still important to the magazine but not as important as the artist on the main image,

The flash is in a red background with a white colour writing. This song means that they are keeping to the colour scheme whist making it stand out with the shape. The fact that uses informal language shows that they do not want it to be takes as serious as other magazines.

The main image of the article anchors the main cover line. By doing this they are showing the importance of this artist in the magazine. They are using one single striking image in the article. Therefore by doing this they are showing that this is important. Also the people will recognise the artist so will attract them to the magazine. The image again relates to a younger audience because of who the artist is. This could be around 16-30

The header of this article is advertising what is the magazine. It is almost being used as a promotion technique. It is in a bold sans serif black font. This is showing the consistent colour. The limited colour pallet again shows the attraction of simplicity to the reader.

This cover uses the rule of thirds on the left, by having the masthead visible on the left. The fact that they stick to this on the left is important because the left side of the magazine is what will be noticed on the shelves when it’s stacked.

The NME is the same as the logo on the front of the magazine. The fact that they have chose to do this shows that they pride themselves on the logo of the magazine. Also a for of consistency will cause people to read on if they like the cover and contents. The bright colours and bold lettering of the logo are sticking to the theme of the cover and based on this appeal to an age of between 16 – 30 due to the colours and simplicity of the overall layout.

The fact that the contents part of the banner is in a different colour shows that they want to make certain items such as the contents and NME stand out.

There is a heading of what the article will come under. The fact that this done shows that there is a specific order to the magazine, they want the reader to be able to know what they are reading.

The heading of the article is written in a black sans serif font with the page number in red, By doing this they are keeping a consistent theme to the magazine but also contrasting colours

The subscription at the bottom of the page shows previous editions. By doing this they are showing more to appeal to the reader. By making an offer clear on the contents will appeal to the reader straight off as they can see what they are paying

The editors instruction to the contents is on a black background and in a white font. The fact that it is a summed up short introduction shows the reader the necessary information but allows a quick read so they can make sure they focus on the magazine,

The drop caps at the start of the magazine allows the emphasis on the article. It draws in the audience. The simplicity of the article again indicates a middle brow audience as it is not to sophisticated but they are willing to read rather that use the internet.

Following a similar pattern to the other side but there is a slight switch in the colour. The page numbers are listed in black and the band name / heading is listed in red. This keeps the readers engaged yet the consistency keeps to the traditional roots.

A traditional theme is kept in how the banner is on the top and the date is located underneath. By doing this they are keeping a recognisable and easy layout for the audience.

The main image of the contents represents what the magazine is likely to include By doing this they are making it clear as when you first turn the page the big article and image in the middle of the page draws your eye towards it. The fact that it is edited to look like a photo shows more of a casual nature and wanting to have a relaxed theme

By having what the magazine mainly contains under headings on the right this sticks to a traditional layout as when the page is turned the eyes are automatically drawn to the right side. They are sticking to a traditional layout but making it there own.

Having the bands and artists they are associated with in this issue on the left as it is not as vital they put it on the left. The fact that they are not as noticeable shows they are not as needed but they are there as extra information to appeal to regular readers who have a favourite artist.

Page 3: Nme mag analysis task 1

A whole page is used for the main image related to the article. By doing this it shows an importance. We also get a feel o what is happening with the mise en scene of the image. The fact that the background is a wall of graffiti shows what the background of the artist is himself. Also it is used to relate to the article. A random image that is nothing to do with the article would not be mean as much. The heading is in

a bold sans serif font in black. Again it is used as a consistent colour throughout the magazine. By keeping up with the theme it is appealing to the reader. Also the fact that it is a jagged style with the graffiti look

The text is structured in four columns. In a reasonable sized font. By laying out the article in this way they are allowing the image to do a lot of the talking underneath as the last two columns are wrapped around the text. By doing this they are making the image clear and important as well as making the text readable

The secondary image is used to relate to threw article itself. By doing this it relates to the article as well as breaks up the reading and does not make the layout look as boring.

By having the caption dizee in the corner shows a reasonable importance to the article. Also the fact that it is in slang shows again that the brow of the article is middle brow. This is appealing to the audience. By having a middle brow audience it appeals to a wider range of people meaning more readership.

The stand First offers more information about the heading and the article. The by-line gives credit to the articles author. By doing this it again keeps a traditional theme without taking too much away from the article itself. If they offer to much information in the stand first there would be no point in reading the article

The page number is in a red font at the bottom. By keeping to the colour scheme the limited colour she me indicates a lower brow target because of the simplicity. This is a good thing for the magazine as they can appeal to a wide audience.

Page 4: Nme mag analysis task 1

The main element that connects all elements of the magazine is the use of large sans serif fonts for the main bulk of a story. By doing this it shows that they want to appeal to a wide audience. They appeal to a middle brow/ lower brow audience so by using this style of font they are clearly trying to stick to this audience. Another area that connects all of the magazine is the use of a limited colour pallet. The fact that the pallet is limited shows that they do not rely on colours to attract the reader, they try to focus on the information that is inside the story to get the readers. One clear element that they show is the use of one single striking image. All through the pages that have been analysed it is clear that one image dominates the page. By having one image to dominate it shows that they want to focus on what is big in that moment in time. Therefore they can be reliant on what they know will het them readers. If a magazine has features linking it together it makes the reader more able to identify with what they are reading and will find it will make them want to read the magazine again. Therefore meeting what is the main aim of the magazine, to have as much readership as possible. The main age that appears to be the overall target of the magazine is consistent in the sense of a higher aged teenager to a younger adult. (16-30). By doing this they are attracting a broad age in the middle brow audience and so therefore will be gaining more readership by appealing to so many.
