Pattishall Good Neighbours ClubDid you miss our contribution to the July magazine? This was
due, I am sorry to say to the death of our Secretary for so many years PaulineGilkes who prepared the report for us.
Well, we have not stood still in recent months. In June we visited the NationalTramway Museum. What a day that was, memories came flooding back riding onthe trams and paying our fares in old pennies. The journey there and back takingus through the beautiful Peak District.
In July Sally Shapton who talked to us about her involvement in Reptile Rescuevisited us. She brought with her snakes, spiders and lizards. It was remarkableto see members who had previously expressed their fear or dislike of reptileswalking around with snakes wrapped around them.
August saw us on our second outing of the year to Rutland. After visiting Oakhamwe joined the ladies of Greetham W.I. who had prepared a superb 3 course lunchfor us. Well fed and very happy we went on to Rutland Water and enjoyed anhour boat trip on the reservoir.
Our speaker for September is Michael Boyce who is giving an illustrated talk aboutRockingham Castle.
October 11th we have a visit from Andrew Castley and shall have a music quizand a sing along.
November 8th Malcolm Deacon will entertain us with stories surrounding theGunpowder Plot. You will be surprised how much Northamptonshire was involvedin this historical event.
December 13th we have our Christmas lunch.
Well those of you who are not members, see what you have missed! See whatyou can enjoy in coming months!
Are you at a loose end on the afternoon of the second Thursday each month?You are? Then come along and join us at 1.45pm in the Parish Hall. You will bemade most welcome and I know you will say “Why did I not do that before”.

Cold Higham Parish CouncilWe are in the process of replacing the park bench in Mill Lane, Grimscote. Thenew bench has been ordered and will be installed sometime during September orOctober. We decided to purchase one made from plastic rather than wood as webelieve this will last better, require less maintenance and offer greater value in thelong term. It is however designed and coloured to represent a wood effect so asto fit in with the surroundings.
Work on the new information point inside thetelephone box in Cold Higham has now beencompleted. This includes a small noticeboard anda rack for leaflets. The existing noticeboard will bedismantled as soon as practical.
A number of people in Cold Higham and the othervillages raised the issue of weeds growing on footpaths and rights of way in the area. This isprobably due to less frequent weed prevention andremoval by South Northants Council which isresponsible for such maintenance. Some of theseroutes had become overgrown during the summerwhich has deterred residents from using them. Anarea at the top of Church Lane in Cold Higham hadbecome unsightly. We have now asked South
Northants Council to renew its efforts to keep these important village rights of wayclear.

Neighbourhood Plans and the Localism ActTHE ‘LOCALISM BILL’, was enacted by Parliament in November. The governmentis inviting ‘neighbourhoods’ – for us the parish of Pattishall which includes Astcote,Eastcote, Dalscote, Cornhill and part of Fosters Booth – to produce‘Neighbourhood Plans’. These will show residents’ views on how theirneighbourhood should be developed. The plan will undergo a formal ‘examination’and become an official planning document. Where there is a parish council, thatcouncil is expected to draft a plan in consultation with residents. The draft planwill then have to have approval of a majority of all residents in a referendum. Theparish council has decided to provide a plan in order to secure the future of ourvillage.
The procedure is as follows:
a) The parish council (PC) notifies South Northants Council (SNC) of itsintention;
b) The PC prepares a draft Neighbourhood Plan (NP) for residents to commenton;
c) The PC takes account of views expressed and finalises the plan inconsultation with SNC;
d) SNC send the NP for an independent examination; and
e) If accepted, SNC organises a referendum of our residents;
f) If 50% or more of voters are in favour then the NP must be adopted by SNCas a formal Planning Document.
The PC intend to draft our NP themselves and, as SNC bear their own costs, thecost to residents – from the precept should be reasonable for a very worthwhileinvestment. The timetable is not clear at present but we will keep you informed.As for the Parish Plan of a few years ago, we may need additional help from ateam of residents.
Having had advice from SNC planning department we envisage that Astcote,Eastcote, Pattishall and Dalscote be looked at as separate entities even thoughwe are all one parish. We will use the existing Parish Plan and look at the possibleneeds and requirements of development over the next 10/15 years, including thepossibility of some more housing development to provide for future needs.
We will publish our proposals for consultation in due course. In the meantime ifanyone would like to assist in this process please come forward and help with thefuture of the parish.

This Summer’s Charity Car BootsAs you will know I put on three car boots this summer at Pattishall Hall and Fields,raising money for the new hall floor. I am delighted to say that we raised £1,802.This is a fantastic result. We were blessed with the weather despite the very wetstart to the car booting season, and the three boots grew from strength to strength.I would like to say a very big thank you to all the members of the Hall and Fieldscommittee who gave up their time to help me in this endeavour, and to thosemembers of the parish who also helped out. We are hopeful that the new floor inthe Large Hall will be laid in the autumn.
Shortly after the August car boot I received a lovely thank you card from a MrsSpikings of Northampton -

Midsomer Grimscote MurderA visit to the Northamptonshire Local Record Office in Wootton Hall can unearthsome fascinating information about our area in times gone by.
A record of the Eyre Court of Northamptonshire 1329 -1330 in the time of EdwardIII, written in Old French but translated and published by the Selden Society, tellsus of the following incident (the spelling is as per the translation in the book):-
"The jurors of Towcester presented that Joan, wife of John of Grymescote plottedthe death of John fitz John. She prepared and heated an oven in the house ofStephen le Chaundeler in Cold Higham, in order that John fitz John might beplaced in it and burned up and killed. She appointed Malcolm and Simon ofPotcote, Brother Robert of Maydenford of the Order of the Carmelites and Johnle Warde of Maydenforde to seize John when he passed by the house and to placehim in the oven and burn him up. Then she sent Iseult Sayere to John in Pattishallto tell him to come and talk with her, Joan. John came to her at once, in Grimscote.When he was there, Joan led him along, talking with him, to a place calledMayneswell, which was only a furlong off from the house where the oven wasprepared and heated; there they continued in conversation for a time and thenparted and Joan went home to Grimscote. John headed for his home, and thistook him past the house of Stephen le Chaundeler. As he passed by, Malcolmand the others who had been lying in wait for him according to Joan's plan seizedhim and placed him alive in the oven and burned him to ashes.
The Sherrif of Northamptonshire was commanded to arrest Malcolm and theothers. Because the jurors said that Joan was living in Warwickshire the Sherrifof that county was commanded to arrest her and bring her to court on 9th February1330. The Sherrif duly sent her on that day. Upon being arraigned she pleadednot guilty. The jurors of Towcester hundred found her guilty as charged and shewas sentenced to be hanged. She had no chattels since she was a feme covert*.
Later the jurors stated that Malcolm and Simon and John le Warde had died. TheSherrif of Northamptonshire returned that Brother Robert of Maydenforde was notfound. "* a married woman

Hyodokan at the Parish HallOne of the most popular clubs at the Parish Hall is the Hyodokan Karate &Self-Defence club. Hyodokan means ‘Hall of the Ice Cave’ reflecting the ratherchilly first winter in the Parish Hall – which we dubbed the ‘Ice Cave’ in the earlydays. Happily we now have a fully matted floor and our feet no longer freeze !
Its other more serious translation is "Hall of the Martial Way" which is a little moreappropriate...
The origins of Karate as a martial art go back a long way. It began as a selfdefence practise in Japan, Okinawa and China centuries ago, and the mainprinciple of the Hyodokan club is still the same, traditional martial arts with a selfdefence emphasis.
The club members learn karate techniques and ‘kata’ - sequences of moves tohelp remember and practice, and also how to use traditional weapons, bothwooden and metal. We practice traditional Jujutsu – how to lock, hold and throwpeople, and how to escape from an attacker - and we use all of this to build ourself-defence skills.
Japanese sword sessions are always great fun, even if they are mostly woodenswords nowadays. Kumite sessions involve sparring with another club member,and is the perfect way to relieve stress, build confidence and have fun at the sametime. And of course there is a great emphasis on improving fitness. If you findgoing to the gym boring, but want to get fitter, karate is a great way to improvefitness and learn useful skills at the same time in a safe and sociable environment.
At Hyodokan students learn Dentokan Karate, a style with a history and lineagethat goes back to the very early days. Dentokan was founded by one of the most

senior martial artists in the western world, Col. Roy Jerry Hobbs, and Neil Malpas,who teaches the Hyodokan is the personal student of Roy. Neil is a 5th Dan inkarate, and hold black belts in many other disciplines. He is the newly appointedhead of Dentokan Karate and Weapons in the UK, and is an experienced teacherwith a British Army instructor background, fully CRB checked.
Club members come from all age groups from ten years upwards, and from allexperience levels. There are members who have never practised a martial artbefore, some with experience of other forms but who have lapsed over the yearsand want to start again, and we have a few who have lots of experience and wantto add the Dentokan skills to their existing knowledge. Your background doesn’treally matter, what does matter is that you want to learn and get fitter in a safeand supportive environment.
The club meets on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, with lots of specialevents arranged throughout the year including optional National and Internationalevents. Hyodokan is not for profit, and the costs are kept as low as possible toenable all to train. Sessions cost a pound an hour. There are no grading fees, nomembership fees, just pay as you train. Insurance is £6 per year.
If you have any questions or would like more info, check out www.hyodokan.comwhich has a link to contact Neil directly.
Why not come along and have a look? There are regular free ‘have a go’ sessionsand you will be made to feel very welcome.

The purpose of the PPP is to enable patients to meet with representativesof the medical practice to identify ways to make a positive contribution to theservices and facilities provided to all patients. Patients and their representativesheard about the recent activities of the PPP and were also able to listen to aninformative and moving illustrated presentation by a speaker from the Alzheimer'sSociety.

Autumn at Canons AshbyIn this most marvellous year where we have celebrated what it means to beEnglish, the community coming together to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee, andthe triumph that was the Olympic and Paralympic games, why not celebrate thewonderful rich history and natural beauty of our own Northamptonshire too?
Canons Ashby is a quintessential Northamptonshire manor house set in beautifullandscaped gardens and parkland, just around the corner from our Parish. Thosewho haven’t visited recently will have a delightful surprise as the place hasbenefited from a major restoration of the stunning gardens back to their earlydesign, and the house hasbeen reinterpreted to tell thestory of the Dryden familywho built the house over 460years ago, and who still retaina flat and visit regularly.
October and November arefull of fun events andhappenings – highlightsinclude Halloween half termfamily fun, and thepreparations for Christmas,include the delightful Craft fairon 10th-11th November for those unusual gift ideas. A traditional VictorianChristmas comes to Canons Ashby for 3 weekends from 24th-25th Novemberonwards. With costumed characters and a decorated house this is the perfect waybegin celebrating this seasonal time of year.
The small but dedicated staff team at Canons Ashby is assisted by an army ofvolunteers who work in all areas to provide visitors with a memorable day out.There’s a huge variety of roles filled by volunteers, from room guides, gardeners,the visitor reception team and tea room assistants, through to the welcome teamwho help with parking and driving the buggy up to the house. Many volunteerscome from the Pattishall area and enjoy the escape into a more tranquil worldwhere they can make new friends and share their interests with others. TheNational Trust discount card is an added bonus too! There are lots of opportunitiesand if this is something that might interest you too please contact Chris Maltby,the volunteer Volunteering Manager via [email protected] or call CanonsAshby House on 01327 861900.More information about all aspects of Canons Ashby can be found atwww.nationaltrust.org.uk/canonsashby
