The Friedberg Folio News from the Hill of Peace
Friedberg Moravian Church Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Our Mission Statement: We are a congregation grounded in Biblical truth, honoring our heritage and deep faith in the Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming openly the Gospel through worship, witness, Bible study, missions, fellowship and service to the community.
The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord - Psalm 33:5
If we look at the news we’ll see that our world is dealing with many things: -Covid19 -Employment concerns -Severe weather -School -Finances -Stress/frustration -Lack of hope for the future -Wild fires -Delay/postponement of activities -The upcoming election -Drought
All of those things make us want to shout out: “What in the world are you doing, God?” And God probably wonders: “What are you looking at? Can’t you see?”
Steve Goodier, in “Quote” Magazine, published this analogy:
Both the hummingbird and the vulture fly over our nation’s deserts. All vultures see is rotting meat, because that is what they look for. They thrive on that diet. But hummingbirds ignore the smelly flesh of dead animals. Instead, they look for the colorful blossoms of desert plants. The vultures live on what was. They live on the past. They fill themselves with what is dead and gone. But hummingbirds live on what is. They seek new life. They fill themselves with freshness and life. Each bird finds what it is looking for. We all do.
What are you looking for? There is good and not-so-good in this world. Are you like the vulture and see only, and seek out only, that which is poor, inferior, faulty and unhealthy? Or are you like the hummingbird, looking for the good, the superior, the perfect and the healthy?
There are both in the world. Even in the midst of the colorful desert blossoms there are dead animals that blight the landscape. Even in the midst of all we’re dealing with, let’s try to remember what King David wrote in Psalm 33:5
The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord!
Every one of the things I listed above could be countered with a “goodness of the Lord.” (Here are just a few examples) Covid19 – We have highly gifted doctors and researchers (gifted by God) coming up with medicines and
vaccines to help us deal with this Weather – We have highly gifted meteorologists (gifted by God) that help us prepare and we have local,
state and federal agencies that we can turn to if disaster happens. Finances – There are family and friends along with ministries and agencies that can help us as we
struggle financially. And (hopefully) things will turn around soon. Stress/Frustration – Our hope is in the Lord! And we must seriously look at our lives and see if there is
anything we can do to lessen the stress and frustration in our lives. Lack of hope for the future – (Again) Our hope is in the Lord. Are we putting our hope in the wrong things
(the wrong God)? The upcoming election – What can I say – this seems to be an every four year phenomenon. It too shall
pass.
Have you ever thought about your life and gloried in the goodness of how God provides for us? Dr. David Jeremiah gave these insights as to how God truly has filled the earth with His goodness:
Instead of satisfying our hunger without taste, He provided taste buds and good tasting food.
Instead of just making the earth fertile without beauty, He made it delightfully beautiful.
God could have made the earth without the beautiful flowers and birds, but He did for our enjoyment.
Like the old hymn says, “This is my Father’s world,” and what a beautiful world He has given us! Troubles and hardships and heartache and stresses still abound, but what will we focus on? Are we the vulture or are we the hummingbird? God cares for us in remarkable and inspirational ways. As Pastor Jim often says, “It is a great time to be living as a Christian in this world.” Don’t disregard the troubles of the world. Help where you can. Change things if needed. But God is still God, Jesus Christ has defeated sin, Satan and death and is our living, risen Savior and Lord, and our future is assured! The earth is [indeed] full of the goodness of the Lord! Notes of Thanks:
Thank you for all the kind thoughts, prayers, cards,
emails, calls, food, the beautiful prayer quilt, plants and
other expressions of love following my recent back
surgery and continuing recovery. My sister-in-law, who
with my brother came from Texas to care for me that first
week, put it so well when she said “Patricia, I didn’t know
you had so many friends.” You, my brothers and sisters
at Friedberg, are indeed my friends. May God bless
each and every one of you. Pat Walter.
Dear Friedberg Family, we want to thank all of you for
the cards, the food, the phone calls, the flowers and the
emails but most of all for your prayers. God has been
right by our side. Love, Gary, Vickie and Stephanie.
Dear Friedberg Moravian Church,
In the 11th Chapter of Hebrews--known as the “Hall of
Faith”, we see so many stories of those who by faith,
trusted in God’s promises.
For instance, Abraham certainly trusted in God. He
believed God by going out and “living as an alien” in the
land promised to him. He also trusted God when he was
told his descendants would be too many to count.
Abraham, and so many others noted in Hebrews 11,
believed, through their circumstances and situations
dictated there was nothing to believe in. This is faith.
For Salem Pregnancy Care Center, we too are required
to believe. Clients and patients enter our doors and
when we see their plights, it is almost impossible to see
a way out. And from a human perspective, a child only
complicates the situation more.
It takes faith to believe a future which seems—on the
surface—impossibly difficult.
But through your support of this work, you believe in a
brighter future for those who come to us. You are in
saying, in effect, “I believe in God’s ability to work in her
life.”
This means more than you can know. Our faith is
stretched here… a lot. But knowing you and so many
other choose to believe gives us hope and encourages
us to believe…even when it is difficult to do so.
Thank you then, for what you do. Your investment in
this work does so much more than keep the doors open
and pay the bills, it gives us a dose of faith.
We appreciate you, all you mean to Salem Pregnancy
Care Center.
Sincerely, Salem Pregnancy Care Center.
Dear Church Family, Just a note to say how much all
the cards, prayers and calls meant to me while
recovering from my surgery and rehabilitation. I am
blessed and grateful for my loving church family. God
loves each of you and so do I. Barbara Reich.

September 13 church re-opening for in-person
worship! Please look for additional details in the coming
days for the finalized plans for our church family’s return
to worship on the Hill of Peace.
The Friedberg Veterans
Memorial Flagpole Terrace is
almost complete, and we look
forward to a formal dedication
when we can all get together
again for onsite worship. We
currently have 137 past and
present Friedberg men and
women that have or are
serving in the US Military represented by engraved
bricks in the Terrace patio. We know there are more. We plan to place a second order for engraved bricks on
September 29 in order to have installed by Veterans
Day, November 11. After that, we will be ordering
engraved bricks once a year. There is no charge for the
engraved ‘Honor’ bricks in the Terrace patio, but we
need your help in making sure we capture as many
former and present Friedberg men and women that have
or are serving in the US Military.
Deadline is September 29. Please prayerfully consider recognizing our Friedberg
brothers and sisters that have proudly served our
country. Database forms are in this month’s FOLIO and
are also available in the office or online at
www.friedberg.church.

The Moravian Day
of Service this year
is coming up on
September 20. Last
year the Board of
Christian Education
coordinated a project
with Ebenezer Christian Children’s Home in North
Wilkesboro. This home houses foster children that
members from our church originally met at Laurel Ridge
Summer Camp. For last year’s project, bags were
collected for each of the children that contained multiple
clothes items, coats, and new shoes. The children and
volunteers were excited and very appreciative of our
church’s generosity. This year, we contacted to the
director of Ebenezer and asked what items they needed.
The children were in good shape right now, but the
houses themselves needed some items. Each house
has put together a “wish list” of things they need
including things like cooking, cleaning, and linen items.
Starting on August 31, there will be an “Star Tree”
outside the Family Life Center covered drive thru that
has all these items. We encourage you to come by and
get an item off the tree to purchase to help these
children and volunteers of Ebenezer Children’s Home.
Bring all these items to the church on September 20 and
these items will be collected to show the service that
Friedberg Moravian Church can do for our savior and
community.

Ways To Help! We have all heard about the difficulties,
stress, anxiety and financial hardship that many are
feeling and experiencing due to all the things that are
happening in our nation. Christians (rightfully so) wonder
how they can help and what they could do. Listed below
are some places/organizations that are reaching out with
God’s love and support that you may want to consider
supporting and lifting in prayer. Below you will also see
how your tithes and offerings that are given to Friedberg
Moravian Church are being used to reach out with God’s
love and support. I encourage you to prayerfully consider
how you might reach out in your own unique ways to
help those who are struggling.
Local Ways to Help:
1] Sunnyside Ministries – Sunnyside provides food,
clothing, and financial support to families in our area.
Consider donating food or clothing, volunteering, or
giving financially.
2] The Blessing Box – Friedberg Moravian Church
has a Blessing Box outside our church building that
supplies food, hygiene items and spiritual resources
for those in our area. Consider donating items to this
important ministry.
3] Cookies for Christ Ministry – This ministry
distributes packages of Moravian Cookies to military
members at various bases. Due to the restrictions of
the Covid19 pandemic plans are on hold for the time
being, but bags of cookies were able to be distributed
at Camp Lejeune and at Fort Macon Coast Guard.
Ways to Help Globally:
1] Friedberg Moravian has sent numerous mission
teams to Ahuas, Honduras. The need there remains
great and constant. A quarterly newsletter called “The
Ahuas Spotlight” gives information about the needs
there. The newsletter can be found at:
https://sway.office.com/DUhueWj7yICFZ67U?ref=em
ail. The area has been hard hit with Covid19, it also
has been hit with disastrous floods (which has
destroyed the rice crop), and the solar system which
powers the hospital has broken down.
2] The ARMF – the Armando Rusindo Mission
Foundation – is a fund that enables individuals to
support the work of the new and growing Moravian
Church in Cuba. Cuba has also been hit hard with
Covid19. Check out their web page:
www.armfcuba.org.
3] The Board of World Mission (BWM) is the “mission
arm” of the Moravian Church in the United States.
The BWM represents the Northern, Southern and
Alaskan Moravian Church Provinces. Since the
Covid19 pandemic began, the BWM has reached out
with support to provinces all throughout the world and
has helped Moravian congregations in the United
States. The BWM used money from the Moravian
Disaster Response fund to reach out with God’s love
and support. With hurricane season amongst us, that
fund will be needed to be used to help those areas
that will be affected by the hurricanes. There will
(most likely) also be future needs concerning the
Covid19 pandemic. To see how the BWM is reaching
out with God’s love and support check out their
website: www.MoravianMission.org or search
“Moravian Board of World Mission” on Facebook.
Ways Your Tithes & Offerings Help:
1] Many people, in addition to their tithes and
offerings given to the work of the church, have given
additional gifts to the Mission Committee. With these
generous donations the Mission Committee has been
able to:
a] help support missionaries all throughout the
world
b] provide funds to the Mission Society of the
Southern Province in order to help them fully
fund the work done in Cuba, Peru, Sierra Leone
and Honduras
c] provide a substantial gift to the BWM’s
Moravian Disaster Response fund to help our
Moravian brothers and sisters worldwide
2] The “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund” allows the
pastors of our congregation to help members of our
congregation when they are struggling. We also help
those outside our congregation as funds allow
Please prayerfully consider how you can reach out to
those who need your help and support. Remember that
we are “Blessed to be a blessing.” Pastor Dan
____
The Covid-19 pandemic continues to
impact many different regions of the
Moravian world. Here in North America, the
BWM has provided grants to over 55
congregations and agencies to help with
expenses in making transitions to online worship
services and to assist with other communication tools as
community gatherings have been curtailed.
As the pandemic continues to spread, Covid-19 is now
impacting our Moravian brothers and sisters in Latin
America as case counts are rapidly rising in a part of the
world that does not have the healthcare infrastructure,
we take for granted in North America. We have already
sent aid packages to Honduras, Peru, and Cuba, and
the BWM is now evaluating several larger grant requests
for medical and protective equipment, hygiene kits, and food. The pandemic will continue to require us to be
attentive to needs and respond with aid for some time to
come.
The need to provide significant financial assistance to
these areas has begun to stress our Moravian Disaster
Response Fund. We are asking for gifts, both large and
small, to enable us to respond as generously as we can
to help meet these needs. For more information on how
to give, including a video about our Covid-19 appeal,
please visit our website at www.moravianmission.org.

September’s verse to focus on will be:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1
God took time, in the beginning to create all things. He even took the time to create each one of us in a
very unique way. This month, spend some time as a family enjoying all of the things God has created and
see if maybe you can even share some of those creations with others! If you do this, share it with your
Friedberg family! We would love to see what all you are up to at home!
SPOTLIGHT ON THE CHILDREN OF FRIEDBERG…
Laurel Ridge: Camp In A Crate
Summer on the mountain looked a lot different for us this year, but the blessings and fun was
still there! We had fun meeting everyday together through the use of technology. Laurel Ridge
mailed lots of goodies to us to make and enjoy while we grew closer to God. We met as a whole
group as well as small groups. We learned from each other as well as from God. We sang songs
together and made crafts. We had campfires and vespers evernight on the mountain yet in our
homes. We even had a lovefeast together! Yes, we were apart, but if you ask any of us we truly
were all together!

Friedberg Moravian Youth Mission Statement: FM youth will LOVE one another as Christ loves us, we will LEARN about God, so we can use our gifts and talents for His purpose, and we will SERVE others as an expression of Christ’s love and we will SHARE the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Flamingo Flocking
Friedberg is hosting a Fall church retreat the weekend of October 16-18th. The youth is helping raise money to offset the cost of the retreat and
put a smile on someone’s face. A big shout out to Carol Knouse for being our #1 flocker at 27
yards. Please let Karen Hill know if you are planning on attending the Fall Retreat by Oct. 4th. We are learning about the power of Jesus’ name and no matter what you have gone through, you are not alone.

Friendship Series—Squad UP Ephesians 1:1-23
Everyone wants a squad—a com-munity of people that cares for us, helps and supports us, and
gives us a place to belong. In short, we all want to be part of a community that feels like family. That kind of community isn’t easy to come by, but it’s exactly what Jesus had in mind for His followers when the Church first began. The truth is, we can all be part of God’s family, and because we’re God’s family, we can do for others what God has done for us, we can grow together, and we can stand strong to-gether.
