The Friedberg Folio News from the Hill of Peace
Friedberg Moravian Church Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Our Mission Statement: We are a congregation grounded in Biblical truth, honoring our heritage and deep faith in the Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming openly the Gospel through worship, witness, Bible study, missions, fellowship and service to the community.
Your Most Spiritual Activity
I’m not sure I’m one of those people who buy into the thinking that January first is an opportune time to change things, or evaluate things, or to start something new. Instead, I think I’m more into the kind of thinking made popular by authors such as Tony Compolo or Erwin McManus (and a host of others) who say, “Seize your moment, NOW!” In other words, don’t wait for the most opportune time because the most opportune time may never come (it rarely does). Authors like Compolo and McManus (and others) try to convince us that we must seize the moment when the opportunity arises. If we don’t, the “moment” may never come back. One of my favorite Christian singers is Steven Curtis Chapman. He hasn’t had much new music for a while but one of his earlier songs was entitled “The Great Adventure.” The idea of the song was that the life God calls His children to is nothing short of a Great Adventure. As we live our life for God on this Great Adventure He provides, we will come across situations, decisions and opportunities that God allows in our life which He wants us to “seize the moment” and use it to further His Kingdom here on earth. In a DVD study entitled “Choices” Erwin McManus said:
The most spiritual activity you will engage in today is making choices… our choices either move us toward God and all the pleasure that comes
in Him or steer us away from Him to a life of shame and fear.” The remarkable thing about it all is that even if we have made terrible choices in the past and have steered ourselves clear of God, it only takes one good choice to get us back on track, to change the momentum of our lives, and get us headed in the right direction again. I’ve been told that in a football game - which lasts a full sixty minutes [unless there is overtime, which would add extra minutes to the total] - there are only a half-dozen-or-so plays in the entire game that determine the outcome. If you think about it, I believe that’s a true statement - an interception; a fumble; a long touchdown pass or run; a missed field goal; a missed tackle; a poor decision; - any of those individual plays could determine the outcome of the final score. The same is true for us. There are only a couple of handful’s of decisions in our entire life that change our life or head it in one direction or another. Perhaps this coming new year (2021) will hold one of those decisions for you. And perhaps, 2021 will hold one of those types of decisions for us - Friedberg Moravian Church. It will come down to choices, so remember what Erwin McManus said about choices. Will the choices you/we make in this new year for ourselves and our family, along with the choices we make for Friedberg Moravian Church, allow us to seize the moment and further the Kingdom of God here on Earth? Or will we choose to ignore God’s leading and disregard His opportunities? Dave Ramsey, a financial advisor to many people, says one of the most silly things a person can do is to keep doing the same old things but expecting their circumstances or position to change. The New Year is upon us. If you have discovered some things that you want to change, or things that need to be changed - I encourage you to “seize the moment” and trust in God to guide you, as you engage in your most spiritual activity.

The Board of Christian Education just wanted to remind everyone, and let those that did not know, about Right Now Media. This is a streaming platform that the church has a subscription to that all members can access. There is a lot of wonderful content on this, from Bible studies, to conferences, to kids shows. There is something for everyone. Some small groups and Sunday School classes use this, but you can use it on your own as well. You do have to have a username and password to access this material. If you don’t have one, you need to contact the church office and you can be set up with an invitation to create a login.
____ Stay connected with your fellow Friedberg members with the Friedberg Friends email group. This is a great way to keep up with multiple church events and prayer concerns throughout the church body. There is a link from the church website: www.friedberg.church or if you need help contact the church office.
A Puerto Cabezas resident inspects the damage to his
family’s home.
Food being distributed to homes in Honduras, where farms have been destroyed and supply roads damaged.
Board of World Mission Update
on Hurricanes Eta and Iota
The month of November brought two
category 4 hurricanes to the La Mosquitia
region of Nicaragua and Honduras, causing extensive
damage from storm surge, high winds, and heavy rain.
Top winds were measured at over 155 mph, and as
much as 60 inches of rain fell within a two-week period.
In Nicaragua, many of the over
60,000 persons evacuated
from their homes are now
returning to assess what
remains. Small towns such as
Haulover were destroyed
entirely, with scarcely a
structure remaining intact. The
Moravian Church there was
left only with its front facade
and steeple still standing.
In Honduras shelters are beginning to empty out as
rivers are now receding. Over 150 homes were
completely destroyed, and more than 800 sustained
significant damage. Roads and bridges were washed out
hampering the delivery of food and supplies.
In Nicaragua and Honduras, many of the farms that line
the rivers and creeks are now covered with two feet of
sand and mud. They have lost much of their rice harvest
this year, and now is the critical time for planting beans.
As a result, food insecurity will be a factor for months to
come.
The most pressing issues now include the immediate
purchase of clean water and food, getting farms working
again, cleaning out wells contaminated by raw sewage,
and getting building materials in place.
To date, the Board of World Mission has dispatched
$41,000 to the three Moravian Provinces in the region to
help them procure these needed supplies. By the end of
December, we will most likely be distributing another
$75,000.
The Board of World Mission is
continuing to work with
organizations such as Feed
the Hungry, Habitat for
Humanity, and Mission
Aviation Fellowship to aid in
the recovery. We are also
welcoming the financial
assistance of many of our
Moravian partners around the
world.
We ask for your continued support of the Moravian
Disaster Response fund, which allows the BWM to
respond to disasters immediately with funds for
emergency needs, as well as ongoing rebuilding
projects. US residents can send donations to The Board
of World Mission, 1021 Center St. Bethlehem, PA
18018. Canadian residents can send gifts to The
Moravian Church in Canada, 600 Acadia Drive SE,
Calgary, AB T2J 0B8. To give online by going

your donation, "For MDR."

C.R.O.S.S. Kids will begin again on January 10 and continue on January 24. We
will have our same type of format as we had last semester where we will meet
together to begin with in the Children’s Center with a some type of Trivia game
then split into different age groupings-so come one and all!!! In our different
age groupings we will have a time of devotions led by different Children’s
Leaders each week and games led by Ms. Holli. Our theme this semester will
be centered around change!! I wonder what kind of change will happen? How
much change? Can we be changed? What will change look like? Get ready to
change and mark your calendars for the start of C.R.O.S.S. Kids for the
Winter/Spring Semester! We cannot wait to see you all again!
CHILDREN’S CHURCH

Children’s Church continues each week during our 11:00am worship
service! Make sure to sign your child up using the Sign-up Genius link
sent out in Mrs. Heidi’s weekly email as well as on the C.R.O.S.S. Kids

Remember, drop off is at the Family Life Center drive thru and pick up is
in the same place! No need to get out of your cars-we will be there to
take care of helping your child(ren) get out and back in! Just remember
to send them with their mask! We look forward to sharing the love of
Jesus with them during Children’s Church each week!
January’s verse to focus on will be:
“Keep my commands and follow them. I am the Lord.”
Leviticus 22:31 Those commands…the Ten Commandments!!! The Lord our God has given them to us to follow!
Talk about those as a family and think about which one might be the hardest one to obey. Work
really hard this month and try your best to obey that command. You will find that not only are
you making God happy, you will be very happy as well!

Friedberg Moravian Youth Mission Statement
FM Youth will LOVE one another as Christ loves us, we will
LEARN about God, so we can use our gifts and talents for His
purpose, and we will SERVE others as an expression of Christ’s
love and we will SHARE the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Missions
Helping those in Jerusalem When Christ calls His disciples to be witnesses to Jerusalem and Judea, He is telling them to
take the Gospel to their family and friends. FM youth did just that, we spread the love of
Christ in our own community. We learned one of our Christmas familiy’s house burned
down and our youth reached out to our church family for help. The support was above and
beyond anything we expected. Not only did we fill their Christmas wish list, but we sprinkled them with $600
in gift cards. The family experienced the love of Christ through our church ministry. The FM youth would like
to thank everyone that prayed, supported, and helped deliver the Christmas items.
Friedberg’s Basic Needs Pantry Due to the successful wreath and bow sale, FM youth was able to support Friedberg
Elementary”s Basic Needs Pantry with $500 in school supplies, such as, Case-it’s,
scissors, crayons, colored pencils, reusable water bottles, snacks and clothes. Tricia
Prevette started the Basic Needs Pantry this school year in hopes to help not only
students but teachers. When students don’t bring school supplies, the teachers use
their own money to buy needed supplies. It’s nice to have a supply closet as a resource
for basic needs.
Blessing Box
FM Youth gave $250 in food donations to the blessing box. Thank you to everyone for your
support of FM Youth ministry. It’s because of your support, we are able to give to those in
need.
Filled the Bus for City Lights Ministry FM youth filled the church bus with gifts and non-perishable food for City Lights
Ministry. Thank you to the high school youth for shopping and the middle school for
wrapping all those gifts. I agree with Jesus in Acts 20:35 “There is more happiness in
giving then there is in receiving.”
Friedberg’s Live Nativity
FM Youth helped re-tell the story of
Christ’s birth through Friedberg’s
first Live Nativity. “God so loved the
world that He gave His one and only
Son so that whoever believes in Him
shall not perish but have everlasting
life.” John 3:16
Christmas Party January 10th @ 5:30 – 7:00
Wear your ugliest Christmas sweater and bring a sock with a gift card
inside. We are having a Christmas party in the FLC! Since we sold
over 200 wreaths, one of our youth leaders have agreed to do
something! You don’t want to miss this!
January Bible-Study We all have goals! Whether your goal is to raise your grades,
learn a new skill, get TikTok famous, change the world, or all of
the above, there are things you want to do, accomplish, and
become. But let's be honest— it's not always easy to achieve
our goals. Sometimes it difficult to even know which goals to set
in the first place! That's why, in this 4-week series, we'll explore
the story of a guy with a seemingly impossible goal and the
steps he took to make his goal a reality. His name is Nehemiah,
and because of his example we can learn a lot about goal
setting, decision-making, leadership, and trusting God. Through Nehemiah's story, we'll see that big difficulties can
inspire God-sized goals, you are designed for God-sized goals, God gives us strength to pursue God-sized goals, and
God-sized goals require God-sized gratitude.
January 31st 5:30 – 7:00 – Make Blankets
God gives us strength to pursue God-sized goals, and God-sized goals require God-
sized gratitude.
FM Youth is pairing with Carol Knouse to make blankets for “The Dragonfly House”. The
Dragonfly House vision is to reach every single child, age birth through 17, in our two-county
service area – to reach those who have not been abused so they become empowered to
prevent it from happening to them and to reach those that have been abused so that they can
begin the healing process. The blankets are used to comfort the children. There’s power in
prayer, therefore we’ll pray over the children that receives the blankets.
