We are now half way through the golf season
and I hope everyone has had a prosperous year
up to this point. This season has been a roller
coaster ride of weather changes, some severe in
nature. It is these weather events that bring out
the best in all of us. I applaud all of the area
Superintendents and staff who found their
courses affected by severe weather in the last couple of months. The incredible
effort and hard work that I've witnessed throughout Northern Ohio, only
strengthens my belief that our Association has some of the best Superintendents
the Nation...keep up the great work it has been truly impressive.
I want to thank Chuck Hayes and his staff for an absolutely stunning golf course th
provided for our June 9thmeeting at Shady Hollow Country Club. We had an
outstanding attendance and beautiful weather to compliment a great day had by
all.
Please do not forget the Friends and Family Picnic and Camping at Clays park July26thit always has proven to be great time, with plenty of activities for kids and
adults. Camping will be available Saturday night and Michelle is always good for

Between the generosity of the Fitch Family and the diligent
work of Industrial Relations Committee, this event will be like
no other Vendor Day in the past. First of all, John Miller will be
speaking on the Globally Harmonized System which will
provide .10 GCSAA points and 1.0 ODA Core education points.
There will be some 20+ Vendors and ManufacturingRepresentatives present and the best part of it all its FREE if
you register before the deadline date of August 4th, so please
dont miss out register now!
Last but not least, I want to remind you of our Action Alerts
being posted on our NOGCSA website and the GCSAA website.
We have some very concerning issues that have come to our
attention. These issues, such as the new proposed rule jointly
released by US EPA and the US Army Corps of Engineers, that
would give Federal jurisdiction over Private and State waters
at our clubs. This rule change could possible bring on new
regulations and or restrictions pertaining to water use and or
treatment of any body of water on your course. It is issues
such as this and several more which need you attention.
Please join us in our efforts to be heard at the State and
Federal levels on issues that can potentially impact the golf
industry. Strength is in numbers and your participation does
make a difference.
Sincerely,
Scott Brickley

DOUBLE DUTY
By Bob Vavrek, senior agronomist, North-Central Region
June 23, 2014
Recent rain, heat and high humidity have transformedroughs and fairways into hayfields. Mowing schedules have
barely been able to keep pace with rapid turf growth and
managing clippings has been challenging.
Most golf facilities use blowers to clear clippings, tree seeds
and other debris from playing surfaces. Courses that own
more than one turbine-type blower might try to use two
units in tandem to disperse wet, heavy accumulations of
clippings more efficiently. Try different angles on the
output manifolds of the front versus rear blower to
maximize clipping dispersal. Also, be sure your utilityvehicle has enough power to tow multiple blowers and try
to avoid tight corners because reversing may not be an
option.

Two turbine blowers in tandem can move clumps of
heavy, wet clippings much better than a single unit,
especially when the output angle is adjusted to maxim
debris dispersion.

GCSAA is taking its government relations efforts to the next
level. We are looking for GCSAA Grassroots Ambassadors.
The goal is to match a member of GCSAA with each
Member of Congress, and to build strong relationships
between them. The program will establish a network of
committed volunteers to serve as the go-to people for
lawmakers and their staff on golf course management
issues. The most important thing you can do as a GCSAA
Grassroots Ambassador is share your story

The First Green!
June 26, 2014
The post below was written for the Midwest Association
of Golf Course Superintendents by Cathy Relyea of the
First Green. This program is great at getting kids on the
golf course and teaching them how to use practical
knowledge they learn in the classroom by applying it in
the real world. If you would like to have the First Green
come to your golf course let me know and we will make
it happen.
First Green coming to Chicago
Cathy Relyea from the First Green Foundation will
introduce First Green, an innovative environmental
education outreach program using golf courses as
environmental learning labs, at the August 26 MAGCSmonthly meeting at Harborside International. Shell be
oined by representatives from the Illinois and Indiana
Sea Grant Program (IISG). First Green and IISG are
seeking to bring First Green to the Chicago area, with
help from Luke Cella, MAGCS executive director, and
John Miller, Midwest Golf Course Superintendents
Association of America (GCSAA) representative. IISG
will be applying for a second round of funding this fall
to provide superintendent resources kits, training for
superintendents and identify classroom teachers.
What is First Green?
First Green is an innovative environmental education
outreach program using golf courses as environmental
learning labs. First Green coordinates outdoor STEM
learning labs at golf courses that allow students to
perform hands-on experiments and tests, all within the
focus of their schools environmental science and/or
environmental horticulture curricula. In these outdoor
labs students test water quality, collect soil samples,
identify plants, do math activities and work with local
issues, such as stream-bed or owl-nest restoration.
Many of the field trips involve community
organizations. In Bellevue, Wash., the citys Stream
Team often has a learning station at Glendale Country
Clubs field trips and engages students in identifyingmacro-invertebrates (bugs) from the Glendale pond.
Hosting a Field Trip
Golf course superintendents are key players in a First
Green field trip, working with the teacher to select a
lesson or lessons from the First Green website
(www.thefirstgreen.org) that fits what the students are
learning in the classroom. Superintendents are the
subject matter experts and have plenty of knowledge
to share. With the help of the planning checklists and
lesson plans on the First Green website,
superintendents can host their own field trips. Whilesometimes a little apprehensive at hosting their first
field trips, superintendents love the interaction with
inquisitive students and are quickly sold on the benefits
of reaching out to the community. Frank Tichenor, golf
course superintendent at Forest Hill Field Club in
Bloomfield, New Jersey said after his first field trip, I
have to say yesterday was one of the best days I have
ever spent on a golf course!
Growing the Game
Over 15,000 students have been on First Green field
trips. Each field trip reaches an estimated 230 people
with environmental and golf messages (due to students
sharing with friends and families and teachers sharing
with colleagues). For many students, a First Green field
trip is their first foray onto a golf course.
