Original Ideafocus on work-life transition

Original Idea

Developing a work-life transition tool for young adults

Interviewed 8 users in individual and shared spaces

Asked questions about leaving and returning home

Consolidated feedback and user needs

Project Goal

To develop a system which helps our

audience comfortably transition

between a relaxed home atmosphere

and a busy work life.

Interviews

“I forget important things at home”

“I use notes on the door to

communicate with roommates”

“only really use the upper half”

“everything else [besides weather]

can be done with a phone”

“I don’t hang around the door when I

enter”

Product Conceptstesting interfaces for solving the transition problem

Features Interfaces

forgotten item reminder door

door “voicemail” closet

remote unlocking projected wall

weather + calendar coffee table

roommate chore manager doormat

outfit recommendations mobile app

8 Mixed Concepts

Insight

Different interfaces suited to different tasks

Lo-fi solutions often do the job well

We were trying to solve a broadly defined problem...

... but not necessarily creating a great product!

Iterationsimplify to a focused, useful and compelling product

Killed Feature Why?

roommate coordination post it notes do this

forgotten items cant solve “where is the item”

outfit recommendation doesn’t align with any goal

morning news replaced by tablet/computer

lighting + entertainment independent products exist

Change in Focus

Reduced features into a more cohesive set

Less on shared college living spaces

Expanded to a broader working demographic

More focus on interpersonal interactions

Final Conceptfocus on access control and messaging

+

Still a Door

Solved the most real problems

Controlled access to the home

Point of contact for outsiders

Aware of who’s inside

Last thing seen before leaving

Features

Remotely let people into your home

Allow people to leave messages at the door

Know which residents are home

Tell user about the day’s weather on their way out

Connects to your phone but can also work independently
