ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH

Return to the Lord

“Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and

the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

Mark 1:14-15 (NRSV)

Unfortunately, the first thing I think of when I hear the word repent is a street preacher with a

megaphone shouting at me and other passing people. I’m not sure this call to repentance is effec-

tive. Despite the street preachers, Jesus’ call to repentance is an important one. Later this month,

we will gather for worship on Ash Wednesday (February 26), the beginning of Lent. Lent is a sea-

son of repentance. What does it mean to repent? Repentance is a word of motion. To repent means

to turn around. To repent carries the meaning of returning to God, turning away from other influ-

ences and forces that seek to claim our lives.

The Holy Spirit gathers us together as church, coming from many different phases of life. Even as

we come from different places and seasons of life, our invitation from Jesus is the same. “The

kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” Jesus invites us not just to a

single confession, or a six week season in the church of repentance. Jesus calls us to a lifetime of

repentance. Life pulls us in many directions. In every season, Jesus calls us to examine our whole

lives to see if we live our faith values in our everyday life.

As we approach the season of Lent, I invite you to ponder. Does the way you live reflect what you

believe about God and your neighbors? What might Jesus be calling you to reexamine? What

might Jesus be calling you put aside to more faithfully follow him? What might Jesus be calling

you to do in your life to more faithfully follow him? This Lent, let our hearts be open to Jesus’

call of repentance.

“Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in

steadfast love.” Lenten Gospel Acclamation ELW Setting 3

February 2020, LSI Bulletin/Newsletter Article and Story

Happy Valentine’s Day from LSI! “We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19

Lutheran Services in Iowa’s (LSI) mission is about love: responding to the love of Jesus Christ through compas-sionate service. We give thanks for all the ministry partners, both individuals and congregations, who help share this love for Iowa children, families, and adults! We see this love in newly adopted children and their families, in teens who learn to trade self-harm for self-worth, in Iowans with disabilities who are growing their independence and confidence, in new parents who are raising strong and healthy families, and in so many other moments of joy. You can help carry out our mission of hope and healing by giving a gift and showing love to the Iowa families we serve. For more information, please contact Deb Whitford, LSI director of philanthropy and church relations, at [email protected] or 563-676-2065.

Thank you for the love you share and create through LSI. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of the Iowa congregations of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in America). We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and sexual orientations. Learn more at www.LSIowa.org and www.facebook.com/LSI.iowa.

“I Feel Like a Parent Now.”

When Harmony learned she was pregnant for the first time, she was excited, but apprehensive. She didn’t know what to expect when raising her first child.

Harmony’s mother, Lois, helped her enroll in LSI’s Early Childhood Services, which provide parenting education and resources to families of young children across Iowa.

While she was pregnant, Harmony participated in prenatal programming, which helped her maintain a healthy pregnancy and ensure she had everything she needed when her baby was born.

When her daughter, Aya, arrived in October of 2018, Harmony and Lois began participating in LSI’s Parent Edu-cation Program, where they now attend regular classes and connect with other families in their community.

And at home, they receive weekly visits from their LSI Parent Educator, Amy. Each week, Amy brings resources for Harmony and age-appropriate toys for Aya. They work together to monitor Aya’s development, and Amy is teaching the family what to expect as Aya begins hitting her developmental milestones.

“LSI helps you learn how to raise your baby and how to learn about being a parent,” Harmony says. “Before, I felt like I was trying to swim, but I was drowning. I feel like a parent now.”

February 2020

This is my last month of writing to you as president of the W/ELCA. It is al-ready the month the St. Paul Women of the ELCA holds its annual meeting. We will be meeting at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, February 12th. If you are interested in hearing about what we do, please plan to attend the meeting. We will elect a new president (at least) and fill other positions as needed. At our meeting we will be voting on our budget for 2020. The fund raisers for this year may need some new chairpersons. Nancy Showalter has agreed to continue as the Ham Dinner chair, but we will need some Christmas Bazaar chairs and someone for the Spring Salad Luncheon (if we have it). We are always short of help for that occasion.

Bible study groups will continue to meet this month. Dorcas Group will meet the 2nd Tuesday of the month on the 11th at 9:30 AM at Country View Care Center. The Priscilla group will meet the 3rd Thursday of the month, February 20th at the home of Julie Abendschein at 7 PM.

Please come to join us for “quilting” and coffee hour on Wednesday mornings. All la-dies (and men) are welcome. There is always great conversation and usually plenty of good food.
