Micronutrients: Fiber
Increasing the amount of dietary fiber during pregnancy has been shown to reduce the risk of preeclampsia, post prandial blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
Iron Adolescent females are already at high risk for developing iron deficiency, but pregnant adolescents are at twice the risk due to the iron needs of the fetus and placenta. Iron deficiency during pregnancy can cause low birth weight in an infant, premature birth, and maternal mortality. The mother may also become extremely anemic.
Calcium Having low levels of calcium can cause a deficiency in Vitamin D and magnesium as well as kidney failure. For pregnant adolescents who are still growing, calcium is extremely important not only for the growth and development of their baby, but for their own growth and bone function. Calcium metabolism appears to play a role in pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH). PIH may be prevented in pregnant adolescents by an adequate calcium intake, approximately 1,300mg.
Micronutrients: B12
Maternal vitamin B12 deficiency has been linked to decreased brain function in offspring, particularly in areas such as sustained attention and short-term memory. If deficient, increased risk of neural tube defects (spina bifida or possibly fatal birth defects).
Folic Acid Deficiency also be linked to decrease brain function in infants. Folic acid helps prevent birth defects like some heart defects and limb malformations. It is recommended that all women who are of childbearing age start taking 400mcg of folic acid supplements to help prevent the possibility of these birth complications.
Percent of pregnant women meeting the dietary recommendations for nutrients that have been previously shown to be low in the diets of pregnant adolescents
and adult women.
*Mean intake for Vitamin B12 met or exceeded reference values in both the adolescents and adult subjects.
