1.0 INTRODUCTION
From May 17 to 22 and from October 19 to 30 1993, geological mapping and a soil geochemical survey was completed on the Spring Lake claim group. The purpose of the work was to locate and ground truth two separate airborne EM conductors on the property as well as to map the strike extension of the felsic volcanics underlying the Conboy Lake property to the west. The Conboy Lake felsic sequence hosts a small VMS-type deposit with drill indicated reserves of 100,000 tons grading B.3% Zn and 5.5 opt Ag.
2.0 LOCATION AND ACCESS
The property is situated in the north-central portion of Rennie Township, approximately 80 km northeast of the town of Wawa (Figure 1).
A gravel logging road from Dubreuillville, 60 km to the west provides good access to the northern portion of Butler Lake. This lake provides boat access to the western part of the property.
3.0 CLAIMS
The Spring Lake property consists of 6 unpatented mining claims located in Rennie Township (plan M1076) in the Sault Ste. Marie Mining Division (Figure 2). The claim numbers are listed below:

1952: Cobalt Products Limited completed a magnetometer survey over a small block of claims covering Butler and Trem Lakes.
1967: W.C. Martin flew an airborne Mag and EM survey over an area including the present Spring Lake property. Ground IP and resistivity surveys were also completed.
1968: Noranda Exploration completed geological and geophysical surveys (magnetometer and JEM) over a large block off claims located between Batttey and Spring Lakes.
1979-1980: Noranda Exploration completed magnetometer and HLEM surveys over a small block of claims centered on Spring Lake.
5.0 REGIONAL GEOLOGY
The property is located at the eastern edge of the Michipicoten greenstone belt of the Wawa- Abitibi Subprovince. Regional mapping has delineated three discrete episodes of volcanism in the Michipicoten belt. The Spring Lake claims occur within the youngest of the episodes, the Catfish assemblage, dated at 2700 Ma.
The Catfish assemblage is composed of a lower sequence of massive to pillowed magnesium and iron rich tholeiitic metavolcanic flows overlain by felsic metavolcanic rocks (tuff, lapilli tuff, coarse breccia and quartz-feldspar crystal tuffs) and metasediments (argillite, siltstone, wacke and conglomerate. The supracrustal rocks have been intruded by granite and gabbro-peridotite stocks and diorite and diabase dykes.
6.0 PROPERTY GEOLOGY (Map 1)
The property is underlain by an east trending, north dipping (80-85 degrees) succession of intercalated mafic and felsic metavolcanic units. The felsic rocks consist of felsic ash tuff, both aphyric and quartz-porphyritic phases. Mafic metavolcanics are primarily massive to pillowed flows. A strike continuous airborne EM anomaly occurs along the northernmost mafic-f elsic contact within the mapped area. This conductor, which is not exposed on surface, appears to correspond to the mineralized horizon hosting the Conboy deposit to the west.
At Spring Lake, an elliptical granite body intrudes the volcanic succession at a mafic-ffelsic contact. A local zone of felsic breccia flanks the north side of this granite. Chloritic iron formation (up to 5m wide) occurs within this breccia unit and is the source of one of the airborne EM anomalies on the property.
A large ultramafic intrusive body (peridotite) underlies the northwest portion of claim SSM 1174757. A small feldspar porphyry sill has been identified northeast of Quarry Lake.
No significant mineralization has been identified. Stringer to disseminated pyrite and pyrrhotite is a common component of the iron formation. A local area of sericitized and weakly pyritic felsic quartz porphyritic tuff was located at 11 * OOE/8 + SOS. This unit, which underlies the northern AEM conductor, is similar in appearance to the sericite schists associated with the Conboy deposit.
7.0 UTHOLOGIES
The codes for the following lithological descriptions are similar to the geological legend of Map 1 of this report.
1a Mafic Rows: dark green to Mack, aphanitic to fine grained and generaHy massive. Pillowed flows have been observed along the shore of a small pond located in the northeast corner of claim SSM 1174757. The pillows are poorly formed and average less than 1 .Om in diameter.
2a Felsic Ash Tuff: Felsic ash tuff underlies the southernmost portion of the property. The unit is light grey in colour, weak to moderately foliated, siliceous and lacks quartz phenocrysts.
2b Felsic Quartz Porphyritic Tuff: Similar to unit 2a but with up to 109t rounded quartz phenocrysts 0.5 mm to 2 mm in diameter. Both clear and blue quartz phenocrysts have been observed.
2c Felsic Breccia: Occurs locally along the north side of a small granite body centered on Spring Lake. The unit is composed of angular to subangular felsic fragments of felsic tuff (units 2a and 2b) hosted in a chloritic mafic matrix. Pinhead garnets are a common component of the matrix. Oasts are generally stretched 4:1 with the long axis measuring up to 20 cm in length.
3 Iron Formation: Occurs as an interflow sediment within or along the contact of the felsic breccia (2c) located north of Spring Lake. The unit averages 3 to 5 meters in width and is composed of bands of magnetite and recrystallized chert and graphite. Disseminated to stringer pyrrhotite and pyrite are also a common component.
4 Feldspar Porphyry Sill: Generally brownish grey to buff coloured, massive and siliceous with feldspar phenocrysts up to 3 mm in length (5'fr to 1 0*M. This unit was only identified in the central portion of claim SSM 1174758.
5 Peridotite: A large ultramafic intrusive underlies the northern half of claim SSM 1174757. These rocks are dark green to black, weathering greyish green and are usually massive.
6 Granite: Two small granitic stocks intrude the supracrustal sequence in the area of Spring Lake on claim SSM 1174759. Both are massive to weakly foliated, medium to coarse grained and pink to greyish pink in colour.
7 Diabase: Two northwest trending diabase dykes have been mapped on the property. These rocks are generally medium grained, equigranular and weather reddish brown. On fresh surface, the rocks are composed equal proportions of greyish green feldspar and black amphibole.
8.0 SOIL GEOCHEMISTRY (Map 2)
8.1 Introduction
A B horizon geochemical survey was completed over the northern airborne EM in an attempt to identify anomalous Cu or Zn trends. The conductor is situated along a mafic-felsic contact thought to represent the eastern strike extension of the Conboy mineralized horizon.
A total of 114 samples were collected at 25m stations on 200m spaced cut and picketed lines. The samples were sent to Noranda Exploration's lab in Bathurst, New Brunswick and analyzed for Cu, Zn, Ag and Au. Sample results are appended.
8.2 Procedures
Samples are collected from the B horizon which in general is rust coloured to brown in colour at a depth of 8-12 inches. Samples weighing approximately 500g are placed in paper bags and dried, these samples are then shipped to the Norex Laboratory in Bathurst New Brunswick.
For Cu, Zn and Ag analyses, a 0.5g - 80 mesh sample is attacked with 1:1:1 nitric acid, hydrochloric acid and water on an aluminum block for 1 hour. The sample is cooled, diluted to 10 ml and stirred. Elements are determined directly from digest with a conventional atomic absorption spectrometric procedure.
For Au analyses, a 10 gram sample is digested with 30 ml of aqua regia. A 75 ml aliquot is extracted from the digest. Gold is then extracted with MIKB from the aqueous solution and read on an atomic absorption unit.
8.3 Results
All samples returned only background values for gold and silver (5 ppb Au and .1 ppm to .2 ppm Ag).
Copper values are generally within the background threshold (less than 20 ppm). A single point anomaly of 51 ppm Cu on L14+OOE/7 + 25S and a three point anomaly (33, 89, 79 ppm) at LI 8 -f OOE/7 * 75 to 8 + OOS were identified but are too low and widespread to be considered significant.
The background values for zinc have a wide variance, ranging from 10 ppm to 90 ppm (averaging 35 ppm). Three single point anomalies of greater than 100 ppm (114,120 and 179) were identified. As with copper, because of their isolated occurrence these anomalous values are considered insignificant.
9.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Mapping on the Spring Lake property has delineated an intercalated sequence of mafic metavoteanic flows and felsic ash tuff (aphyric to quartz porphyritic). Immediately north of Spring Lake, felsic breccia hosting a 3 to 5 meter wide iron formation envelopes a small granitic stock. The iron formation contains graphitic and sulphRJic (pyrite and pyrrhotite) units and appears to be the source of an Airborne EM anomaly situated immediately north of Spring Lake. A second airborne anomaly situated south of Bartley Lake is not exposed on surface. This anomaly occurs along the contact of mafic flows and felsic quartz-eye tuffs and may represent the eastern strike extension of the Conboy
mineralized horizon.
A soil geochemical survey completed over the northern airborne anomaly failed to identify any significant anomalous trends.
Based on the proximity to the Conboy Lake zinc deposit, it is recommended that a single note be drilled to test the airborne conductor south of Battfey Lake. The location of the drill hole will be dependent upon the results of a geophysical survey scheduled to be completed by mid-December, 1992.
