By Dave ScottEd Pieters was only able to spend

about four hours at the Norfolk County Fair, but he used his time wisely. He went to visit the buildings and catch up with folks he otherwise might not run into during the year. One of the booths he stopped by to visit was that of McKiee & Farrar, Tri-County and R.E. Mann Brokers. He was asked if he wanted to enter a draw for a 51” big screen TV; so he did. Wouldn’t you know it, of the thousands of entries, his name was picked! He stopped by the R.E. Mann office on Norfolk Street in Simcoe last Monday and picked up his new

big screen. Ben Van Paemel of R.E. Mann said

the turn out at their fair booth this year was amazing. He wanted to thank all who took part in the draw and stopped by to say hi!

Ross Keegan of R.E. Mann also echoed Ben's thoughts, adding how surprised the Company was to speak to people from places like Ottawa, Kingston, Windsor and Barrie at the fair. The Company also enjoyed many visits from local friends and clients who have insured their homes, cars, farms and businesses with McKiee & Farrar, Tri-County and R.E. Mann Brokers over the years.

Congratulations Ed, enjoy the big screen!

By Dave ScottAs a lot of you have seen over the years, we enjoy

heading out and covering the local elementary school and high school cross country meets. Every year students gather and run according to age and gender. It is that simple. I am always amazed at the high participation rate at the elementary school level. This year’s Public School meet for Norfolk attracted 411 students.

Of course the junior level is always the highest (that being grades 4 and 5), next is intermediate and finally seniors (grade 8). The one thing you notice, as the kids grow older, the participation starts to fall.

Now when we look at the high school meet for students in grades 9 to 12, the amount of participation falls off the map. The whole Norfolk high school meet had maybe 60 kids total… that includes midget, junior and senior divisions, along with both public & catholic schools.

There are teachers who volunteer and coach the teams at every level… so we know we have the folks to help our kids. They put out the announcement and encourage kids to get involved and like I pointed out above, at the youngest level they are all into participating… perhaps it is fun and they want to do what their buddies are doing… exercising comes more naturally. Whatever it is, we need to keep kids active and wanting to take part.

When you look at what is needed to participate in cross country running, all you need is a pair

of running shoes and a little desire… that’s it!All this got me to wondering about the activity

levels of children across the country. I wanted to share with you an interesting fact from Active Healthy Kids Canada (www.activehealthykids.ca), “7% of 5 to 11 year olds in Canada and 4% of 12 to 17 year olds meet the Canadian Physical Actively Guidelines for Children and Youth, which recommends at least 60 minutes of daily to moderate to vigorous physical activity.”

As these numbers show from across the country we all need to ensure our children get active. It is the little things we do as parents, family, volunteers, teachers, coaches… to encourage kids to get out, play and participate. It is up to all of us the lead the way to play.

Filling a niche by offering help with daily living, non-medical Senior Care assists

seniors and families, by helping to take the stress out of caregiving.

Non-medical senior care companies, such as

Victoria Eldercare, focus on companionship and personal care services. This covers assisting older adults with daily needs, such as meal preparation, running errands, medication reminders, light housecleaning, incidental transportation to doctor visits and other non-medical tasks.

When all of these daily tasks are being done by a professional, non-medical caregiver, it allows family members, such as grown children or spouses, to spend quality time with the senior, versus the quantity time of just spending hours doing the grocery shopping and cleaning, but not really being a companion to their elderly loved one.

Non-medical senior care can also keep a senior in his/her own home longer, since it actually makes them more independent in their own natural surroundings. It can prevent the senior from having to move to senior housing earlier than necessary, since their daily needs are being met.

Many seniors may need care, but they still enjoy the freedom of picking their own activities and doing them in their own homes on their own schedules. Seniors prefer to live at home versus moving to a senior facility based on numerous government surveys.

Non-medical senior care also benefits family members who live a great distance from the senior. Regardless of the distance apart, you as a caregiver can have peace of mind that your senior relative is being cared for with proper

meals and someone to talk to on a regular basis, even if you can’t be there to do it. A good, non-medical senior care company will also communicate the senior’s status or issues to the relatives regularly via phone, providing updates on their social, physical and emotional well-being.

If someone you know needs assistance, contact Victoria Eldercare. Hourly home care services allow clients to maintain independence in the safety and comfort of home. Our staff is available to answer your questions and help deliver the companion/homemaker or personal care services your loved one needs.

Dr. Bruce Veltri is the owner of Victoria Eldercare, a home care company the matches exceptional care-givers with elderly and frail seniors to help them stay safely and comfortably in their own home. You can reach Dr. Veltri at (519) 429-9263 or get more information from our web-site www.victoriaeldercare.com.

Victoria Eldercare is holding a Senior Drivers Refresher and Safety Program.

Our first Mature Drivers Course was a great success. We are planning on running another course November 26/28, if you are preparing for your 80+ Drivers exam this course is designed for you. Please call (519) 429-9263 to register. Cost is $119.00 for this 6 hour certificate course. The November course will be held in the afternoon, 12:30 to 3:30 both days.

- Helping a Hearing Aid Hearthem. Helping communication or talking with another person is one of the main reasons for its use. There is an adjustment time to wearing it - learning how to use it and feeling comfortable when talking with others.

Each user finds their own ‘adapting ways in their own time’. While they are doing this there are many ways that their family and friends can support this ‘adjusting time’ and this is very rarely in the pamphlets or any other information on these important ‘aids’!

The new user has much to cope with and does not have the self-confidence to suggest ‘how others can help them, this will certainly come, but not just yet! And so, here are some ideas, learned by reading and experience - the title says it.

Reach out to support the user! - Keep a normal tone and pace- Have the person’s attention- Sit or stand so the user can see you- When in a group ask where it would be best place for them to be- When you realize the user did not hear, reword what was said- Speak with your hands, face and eyes- Praise and commend the wearer on their adjustment- Ask the user how your speech is and what they would like you to change- And in time, ask them if they are wearing the aid and also in time they will tell you!

Pleasant and relaxed communication is so enjoyable!

This month I thought I would share some fun and interesting

facts on Sleep Apnea and Sleep Disorders

1) Celebrities who suffer from Sleep Apnea include; Quincy Jones, Regis Philbin, Rosie O’Donnell,

By Lyndsey Ross, RRT, BSc.

resPiratOry health Shaquille O’Neal and William

Shatner.2) Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder

where the brain is unable to regulate the wake-sleep cycle in a normal cycle. People who suffer from Narcolepsy often have a disturbed night time sleep and abnormal daytime sleeping pattern, which is not the same as insomnia. They often experience disturbed nocturnal sleep and an abnormal daytime sleep pattern, which often is confused with insomnia. Late night host, Jimmy Kimmel suffers from Narcolepsy.

3) Sleepwalking (somnambulism) falls into the group of Sleep Disorders called parasomnias. People who suffer from sleep walking will wake during slow wave sleep (non-REM sleep) in a low level of consciousness and will perform activities from sitting up

in bed, cleaning, cooking, grabbing at hallucinated objects or even driving. Jennifer Anniston is reportedly said to have admitted to suffering from sleepwalking.

4) A study done in the American Journal of Sleep from 2004 found that if every driver in the United States that suffers from some form of Sleep Apnea, was treated for it, 980 lives would be saved annually and $11.1 Billion USD annually in collision related cost. Unfortunately no Canadian numbers are available.

5) A study in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1999 found that drivers with untreated Sleep Apnea were found to have twice the risk of a traffic accident.

6) Men are more likely than women to drive while drowsy and more likely to fall asleep at the wheel than women.

7) In a survey released from the Centre for Disease Control, 37.9% of respondents reported unintentionally falling asleep during the day at least once in the month prior.

8) The 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska, the Challenger space shuttle disaster and the Chernobyl nuclear accident have all been attributed to human errors in which sleep-deprivation played a role.

9) New parents lose out on a total of 6 months’ sleep in the first two years of their child’s life.

Simcoe Little Theatre ushers in a new era of youth and innovation to build a better, bolder and bigger community theatre.

Simcoe Little Theatre (SLT) is positioning itself to stay on the leading edge of entertainment in Norfolk County with the inclusion of a new generation of youthful, skilled members in its recently appointed board of directors.

Established in 1946, SLT remains one of the Southern Ontario’s longest-running community theatres and has contributed to the tremendous growth and expansion of Norfolk County’s arts and theatre culture.

“Simcoe Little Theatre welcomes into our leadership a number of bright, talented, business-savvy young people who represent our future,” explains Vice-President Doug Grant. “They bring a refreshing contemporary flavour to our decision making process. I expect their leadership to result in even more first- rate shows that will appeal to increasingly larger audiences of all ages.”

Grant, along with a core group of long-time executive members, hoped to encourage a younger generation of people to help steer SLT, including first-time board members Tanya VanRooy (Special Events), Jason Parkins (Lighting) and Adam Liefl (Publicity). Together they represent a demographic armed with knowledge of today’s trends and technology, which is hoped to propel SLT into a new era of theatre production.

“There’s so much history with SLT. I’m looking forward to carrying on the tradition of high quality theatre using today’s new methods of promotion and engagement, while still honouring the theatre’s storied 67 year history,” says Liefl.

The new board believes SLT patrons new and old can expect to see and feel a refreshed theatre going forward. The push: increased memberships, new volunteers, new promotional campaigns through the use of social media

and growing theatre networks here in Norfolk and Southern Ontario, and a commitment to further raising the quality of productions, both artistically and technically. The 2013/14 season already boasts a tremendously diverse playbill with two musicals and three plays with an emphasis on featuring younger actors.

SLT is also nearing the end of completing its

“Where Community Stars Shine” campaign to fund a nearly half-million dollar renovation project that began in 2010. Those wishing to donate can do so www.canadahelps.org.

For more information on SLT programming, memberships and volunteer opportunities visit www.simcoelittletheatre.org or call (519) 426-7620.

By MARG WERDENLynn Valley Trail repairs completed

Thanks to total donations of approximately $170,000 from dozens of individuals, corporations, and service organizations, the Lynn Valley Trail is once again in tip-top shape. At an event on Sunday at the Port Dover head of the trail in Silver Lake Park, donors were thanked for their contributions to the project and a sign acknowledging these donations was unveiled.

“Thank you to the many wonderful people who have donated to this major project,” Lynn Valley Trail Association (LVTA) President Paul Bleischlag said. “This event is the culmination of the project and we are able to say ‘We are done!’ We raised a lot of money for this project and then used people from the local communities to do the job. While today we are recognizing those donors who contributed $1,000 or more, there were many donations of from $10 to $999 that didn’t make this list or the sign. However, we thank all of you. In addition, we estimate that more than 2,000 hours of volunteer work were contributed in the last year to complete the project.”

Michael Davis, Secretary of the LVTA provided a brief history of the trail. “The Lynn Valley Trail runs along the route of the former Lake Huron and Port Dover Railway which established the route in the 1870s. Between Simcoe and Port Dover, the route crosses the Lynn River four times using four wooden railway bridges. In 1988 the railway line was abandoned and acquired by Norfolk County. In 1993 the trail was opened and the maintenance of the bridges was handed over to the LVTA, which then installed railings and decking on the bridges to make the trail safe for hikers and cyclists.

“Ten years ago extensive work was needed on two of the bridges to repair the in-water supports. Last year, we had an inspection conducted again, and there were signs of deterioration on the in-water supports of the Burt and Robinson bridges. The repairs needed to be completed immediately or the trail would have to close in 2014. The project to repair the bridges and the start of a major fund-raising campaign were announced in December of 2012 and in August and September of this year the repairs were completed. These repairs will extend the life of the bridges for many years into the future.”

The repairs would not have been possible without the support of a number of large donations

including $78,000 from a Trillium Foundation grant, funding from Norfolk County, and numerous donations from businesses and service clubs including four $10,000 donations from the Hellyer Foundation, the Simcoe Lions Club, the four Simcoe and Port Dover Tim Horton’s franchises, and Ontario Power Generation.

In a written message, MP Diane Finley said that the Lynn Valley Trail is another gem in Norfolk County. “Growing up in Port Dover, I’m grateful to the people who stepped up and put their support behind the trail. It’s a tremendous resource for visitors and residents of the area.”

MPP Toby Barrett brought greetings from the Ontario government and said he remembered a meeting in the early 1970s at which the idea of a trail linking Port Dover and Simcoe was proposed. “There was no money and a lot of opposition,” he said. “Farmers were leery of vandalism and the meeting did not go well. However, hope was there and it was the beginning of a vision for the trail. The leadership for the project was there for many years before the possibilities presented themselves when the railway right-of-way became available. The trail is the fruition of more than 40 years of planning and is a role model for so many other projects in the area.”

Helen Wagenaar, a local representative of the Ontario Trillium Foundation was also on hand to celebrate the new and improved trail. “This project provides safe recreational opportunities for a large number of people,” she said.

Norfolk County Mayor Dennis Travale said the County is always amenable to joint efforts, but that “we need to know how much ‘skin’ do you have in the game and by ‘skin’ I mean how many people are willing to volunteer and step up to make these things a reality.”

Peter Hellyer from the Hellyer Foundation echoed Mayor Travale's words by saying, “We do not take for granted all the dedicated volunteers who made this project happen or the volunteers who keep the trail beautiful for all of us. The Lynn Valley Trail is world class and is a piece of environmental art with the water in the Lynn River rushing under the bridges, the leaves rustling overhead, and the cattle in the nearby fields.”

After the official ceremony was completed, a sign located near the Freedom Fountain at the start of the trail in Port Dover naming all donors of $1,000 or more was unveiled. Names on the sign include: The Trillium Foundation, Norfolk County, Tim Horton’s, Simcoe Lions Club, The Hellyer Foundation, Ontario Power Generation, the Fredericks Family, the Burt Family, Michael & Keitha Davis, Jay & Irene McKiee, Malcolm Meller, Charlie & Juta Upshall, Maria Welyhorskyj, Mark and Jeff Gamble and Families, Bachmann Law, Meridian Credit Union, Port Dover Lions Club, Rassaun Steel, Royal Bank of Canada, Simcoe Rotary Club, The Vittoria and District Foundation, and Vallee Consulting Engineers.
