Welcoming Hope!I never tire of the joy of Christmas. Our churches are filled to overflowing with people who come to celebrate the birth of hope into our world by singing carols and lighting candles and hearing the old, old story of Jesus’ birth.

For some reason, this Christian festival has become one which includes an enormous number of people of all faiths and none. And what is wonderful about that is that it is just what the God who we meet in Jesus stands for!

This tiny baby who is so easy to love, grew into a man who welcomed people indiscriminately. He welcomed the poor and the disabled, the corrupt and the powerful, the sick and the outcast. He welcomed posh people and religious people, prostitutes and the financially shady. Still today, we can be challenged and encouraged by the extraordinary breadth of God’s welcome, as seen in the life of Jesus.

So as we find ourselves again amongst the rustle of tinsel, drinking in the smell of mulled wine and mince pies, I hope that in the midst of the busyness of gift giving and socialising, we might be able to catch a glimpse of the deep hopefulness at the heart of this festival.

Christmas may not be easy for all of us. Grief and changed circumstances, unhappy memories, strained finances and difficult family relationships can all take their toll. Yet, no matter how we come to this time of year, right in the middle of the mess and muddle of our humanity, lies the vulnerable newness of God’s life, come to be with us whatever we face. In this tiny baby lies God’s hope for the future of our world.

As we celebrate Christmas this year, may we also be ready to cradle this fragile hope into the new year and see it grow and bring life and light to all those who we meet.

Revd Elizabeth

ADVENT CAROL SERVICESt Michael’s Church, Porthilly 3rd December 2017 @ 6pmAdvent Sunday marks the start of the new Church Year. The year starts by

preparing and reminding ourselves of that most amazing and wonderful event in the history of mankind.

Yes Christmas is coming into our lives in 2017 and Advent is our period of preparation. A time for light in our world.

Come and join us to start that process and be stirred up with words and music that will lead us from Creation to the new day.

Letter from Ideas PartnershipDear Elizabeth,

We’ve received a really generous donation from you and St.Peter’s church and we are so grateful to you for enabling our work with some of the poorest children and families in Kosovo.

Below you can see photos of children during some of our various activities.

Please let us know if there is a particular cause or project that you would like your donation to be used for.

If we don’t hear back from you we will send you another follow up email to let you know what your donation was used for.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of those most vulnerable.

Your support is highly appreciated!

The following is an extract from a St James the Great church Newsletter January 1961, apparently from an unknown other Parish Magazine. From some documents loaned to William Garland.

On StrikeHow good it is that God above has never gone on strike,Because He was not treated fair in things He didn’t like.

If only once He’d said: “That’s it! I’m through.I’ve had enough of those on earth, so this is what I’ll do –

I’ll give my orders to the sun – cut off the heat supply; And to the moon – give no more light, and run the oceans dry. Then just to make things really tough and put the pressure on,

Turn off the vital oxygen, ‘til every breath has gone.”

You know He would be justified, if fairness was the game,For no one has been more abused, or met with more distain

Than God; and yet He carries on, supplying you and me With all the favours of His Grace – and everything for free!Men say they want a better deal and so on strike they go,

But what a deal we’ve given God, to whom all things we owe.We don’t care who we hurt or harm to gain the things we like,But – what a mess we’d all be in if God should go on strike.
