Terminal TwoSet For Take-Off
A feeling of pride, excitement and optimism inthe North County is evident with the openingof the much anticipated Terminal Two (T2) atDublin Airport. The opening ceremony is setto take place on Friday next, 19th November. This vital piece of infrastructure is absolutelyvital to the commercial and economic growthof the North County and its opening will be amomentous occasion for the entire local area. The distinctive building is destined to specifi-cally meet the travelling needs of passengersand features spacious areas in check-in,baggage reclaim and a state of the art depar-tures lounge. The new facilities will enhancethe travelling experience of thousands ofpassengers and will allow arriving passengersto move through the centre of the terminalwithout having to change levels. The hugelyimpressive underpass created by T2 brings, not only the North County, but Ireland firmlyinto the 21st century. Dublin Airport has been the leading employerin the North County since its inception 70years ago. Generations of local people havebeen employed there and are steeped in itshistory, including whole families who haveplied their trades here. In many cases, gener-ations of the same family have worked thereand this new addition will hopefully continuethis trend. It is the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of theNorth County and is set to scale even greaterheights. The addition of the new terminal willcatapult the airport to becoming one ofEurope’s leading airports which will generatea whole new passenger experience. The vibrancy of the North County as aneconomic hub has been evident for some timenow, particularly with the recent granting ofthe Railway Order allowing Metro North toproceed to the next stage of development. Thelinking of Metro North with T2 will combinetwo of the largest infrastructural projects in
the state in one place, which is bound to havea massive impact on the area. Aer Lingus willbe the primary user of the new terminal, which will also be home to other transatlanticand intercontinental carriers. The facilitieswill include The Loop, a shopping area whichis guaranteed to be a unique experience withall the top names present. Meanwhile, Tony Lambert CEO of FingalDublin Chamber said, “The opening of T2 willbring huge benefits to air travellers and will
be a very impressive introduction to ourcountry for incoming visitors. The creation of900 direct jobs in T2 and many thousandsindirectly will of course bring enormouseconomic benefits to the North County.” Hecontinued, “Dublin Airport has been the main-stay of employment in this region for decades.T2 will continue and sustain the large numberof jobs that are so vital, particularly so atpresent. The Chamber congratulates DublinAirport Authority on delivering this magnifi-cent engineering and architectural achieve-ment to the airport,” he concluded.

Taoiseach PraisesProgress In North
County
An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, paid avisit to Swords last week, where heperformed a number of functions. Hepresented Grants of Approval to somelocally based companies in the officesof the County Enterprise Board in thetown. After the presentation, he spokeabout Metro North and other issuesaffecting the North County in an inter-view with the County Leader. When asked about what outcome hesaw for the Metro North Project inregard to jobs he was understandablycautious, due in the main to the projectstill having some obsta-cles to overcome. However, the feeling wasone of optimism thatMetro North will bedelivered. He said, “It’s ahuge project which isincluded in the NationalDevelopment Plan aspart of the transportationresolution in Dublin. Thegovernment has madedecisions and Metro is ahuge project into which alot of work has gone so far. It’s anissue we’re going to have a look at.We have got to understand with thepublic finances, is how we can roll outthese programmes over a period oftime. That’s why we revised thecapital programme in the summer andMetro is still part of that.” When askedabout the confusion surrounding thecost of the project and the fact that, asa Public Private Partnership initiative, the majority of the cost will be borne
by the tenderer and is not going to costthe taxpayer as much as is the percep-tion. The Taoiseach responded bysaying, “The issue is the air at themoment and is in the developmentplan. We evaluate all the costs and, asI say, it’s part of the revised capitalprogramme.” Mr Cowen was verypositive when he was reminded aboutthe very dynamic additions to theNorth County in recent times, including the opening of T2 at DublinAirport, the Drinan Enterprise Centre, the growth of the Pavilions ShoppingCentre and the general vibrancy whichis regularly reported in this newspaper. He said, “We need to concentrate onpositives and move away from all thenegatives we hear all of the time. It’salso clear that we have a flexiblelabour market in this country.Remember that 86 per cent of the
workforce went to workthis morning. In the lastrecession, it was astruggle to get onemillion people workingand now we have 1.86million people at work,”he said. He was full ofpraise for our CountyCouncil who won theLocal Authority of theYear Award. He said,“The local authority, through a well resourced
rate plan, has been able to attract busi-ness to open here. A lot of socialcapital has been attracted to the NorthCounty area, with residential andcommercial developments here. Whenyou look at Swords, Malahide,Balbriggan, Lusk, Rush, Balbriggan,Skerries and other towns in the area, they are very well developed commu-nities where there is a very goodquality of life, which I am very wellaware of myself,” he concluded.

The Irish Healthcare Awards took place atthe Shelbourne Hotel recently. Swordssisters Edel and Louise Connolly werehighly commended by judges for theirproject, ‘Be Allergy Aware’. Edel, who isjust nine years old, is the youngest everIrish Healthcare Awards entrant. Ananaphylaxis sufferer, Edel developed acampaign aimed at raising awareness of
allergies. The suite of materials producedby the sisters included leaflets and awebsite, and the pair have given severaltalks on allergy awareness in schools.Nearly 100 entries were received for thisyear’s Awards, which are now in theirninth year and the gala event wasaddressed by Mary Harney TD, Ministerfor Health and Children.

Swords Sisters Highly CommendedAt Healthcare Awards
Skerries residents are astep closer to seeing aswimming pool, hotel andgymnasium built inSkerries. This followsLabour councillor, CiaranByrne’s success in havinghis motion included inthe County DevelopmentPlan recently. “Themotion also includes
provision for playingpitches and a coastalwalkway. The proposedhotel would be a small, high quality, boutiquestyle one to cater for localweddings and smallconferences, thus bene-fiting the local economystill further,” said Byrne. He continued, “The
motion specifies thatthese community facili-ties must be delivered bythe developer at the sametime and in conjunctionwith any housing devel-opment in the project.”says Byrne. There wasgreat disappointment inSkerries when plans for apool in the Ballast Pitcollapsed two years ago.“I was, and am, deter-mined to see that a poolfor a townspeople whohad made such great
efforts in the previousdecade should berewarded. That is themeaning of communityled development andHolmpatrick Cove hasthe support of the over-whelming majority ofpeople in the town.”Byrne, who alsocommended the projectdevelopers, Michael andAlison Brannigan, them-selves Skerries residentsfor their commitment todelivering the communityfacilities up front. I amcalling on governmentTDs in the North Countyto ensure that the govern-ment funds that havebeen promised for theswimming pool project inBalrothery/ Balbrigganare protected in the forth-coming Budget on December 7th.” he concluded.

A major row is brewing over thepossible loss of life saving emer-gency services in the North County.Plans are set for Balbriggan andSwords to lose ambulances which areessential health services in the area. Local represen-tatives, emergency service personnel and healthcareprofessionals have all given the same message,“the loss of such vital local services could costlives.” Cllr Tom O’Leary told the County Leader,”Fire and Ambulance men are very concerned thatthis vital service could be axed. For local peopleright across the North County this is a tragic deci-sion. We have to keep the service going, Godforbid there was a major incident in the area. Theever growing population needs all the ambulanceswe can get.” The SIPTU union whose membersoperate the service have condemned the decisionsaying that the service has proved it’s worth overthe last four years. It is estimated that around 4,500people depend on the service each year withpossible cardiac patients being worst affectedshould the service be scrapped and other servicesfrom further afield used. SIPTU slammed the deci-sion saying that the half a million euro needed tofund the service needed to be found and was wellwithin the budget from the HSE. Fine Gael DeputyLeader James Reilly accused the HSE of“bungling” the decision, pointing out that the FireBrigade ambulance cost just €19 per call asopposed to the cost of €90 per call for the HSEservice. It would appear that this is an argumentthat the HSE cannot win and certainly are havingtrouble justifying as the figures just don’t add up.The HSE maintain that they can provide coverwithout the Fire Brigade’s ambulances, yet theHSE ambulances were unavailable to respond totwenty thousand calls over the last two years.

Nifti To ReceiveMajor Funding
The North Fingal Rural Transport Network (Nifti), isto receive a major funding boost from the Government, according to T.D. Michael Kennedy (FF). He told theCounty Leader, “I’m delighted to see that the Nifti willreceive funding of over €98,000. These much neededfunds will assist with the cost of running this vitalservice in an area of North Dublin that is often timesoverlooked when it comes to public transport.” “I want to congratulate Ann Louth and her dedicatedcolleagues for the work that they have put in to thisproject which will continue to benefit communities inthe North County.” Kennedy has been working withthe Nifti transport group for several years with theirefforts to secure continued Government funding. Niftiis a community based project established in 2002,following a longcampaign by local resi-dents, and addresses ruralisolation by providingtransport services to ruralresidents. “Nifti hasproven very successfuland this announcementdemonstrates the impor-tance of keeping commu-nity based programmesalive in rural areas”,concluded Kennedy. Meanwhile, an ambitious newstrategy to set out a clear plan towards achieving amore sustainable model of transport in rural areas willbe launched November 22nd by TD, Mary O Rourke(FF). It will present to the Government a blueprint tomaximise the return on investment made in the RuralTransport Programme(RTP), as well as other main-stream budgets including health. Chairman of Nifti andExecutive Committee member of RTN, Cathal Bolandtold the County Leader, “The opportunity is there tobuild a bus network providing real connectivity andintegration. The State who fund the RTP can make realsavings by the integration of services currentlyprovided by a range of agencies to rural communities,”he said.

Malahide Shuttle Project UpdateFollowing manyattempts by residentsfrom Malahide to set upa bus service, the likeli-hood of getting a licenceseems to have improved. There is hope of gettingit early in the New Yearwhen it should bepossible to get theservice up and runningwithin a couple ofmonths.
Last August, thecommittee’s licenceappeal had just beenturned down, despitenearly 600 Malahideresidents logging intothe Shuttle Projectwebsite to support it.The new NationalTransport Authority(NTA) took over bus
licensing and thecommittee applied tothem for a licence oncethey were in business. They also mentionedthat they had sent out adraft set of guidelines onbus licensing whichlooked somewhat betterthan the old ones issuedby the Department ofTransport. There was one area inthe new guidelines thatgave some concern.
This was a section on‘Adverse Competition’,which effectively gavethem the option torefuse to license anyservice which might beseen as in competitionwith an existingsubsidised service, e.g.Dublin Bus. Thecommittee sent in asubmission about thisclause and several otherMalahide bodies, including the Chamber, the Forum and severalResidents Associationsalso did so. DeputyMichael Kennedy (FF),who is a member of theJoint OireachtasCommittee invited thecommittee to addressthem and following that, they asked the NTA tomeet with them. Mark Hely Hutchinson, from the MalahideShuttle Project told theCounty Leader, “Theoutcome seems to us tobe most encouraging. The NTA indicated tothe committee that they
accepted our criticism ofthe section on AdverseCompetition, and wereproposing to change it.They also reiteratedtheir undertaking to givethe needs of the travel-ling public priority overprotecting subsidisedservices. The NTA hasstated that they will dealwith licence applicationsmuch more quickly thanthe Department ofTransport did,” heconcluded.

We all dread the scourge of a leaking gutter whichsends down torrents of water during particularlywet weather. This will be caused by erosion, age orpoor workmanship by fly by night operatorsoffering work at knock down prices. Balbrigganbased guttering firm, John Gallagher Services is atthe forefront of ensuring that customer service andvalue for money are theirprimary concern in thearea of guttering, fascias and soffits and
downpipes. The company wasfounded by JohnGallagher and his wife
Eileen. John had served his time in the businesssince 1990 and in 1994, he saw the opportunity todevelop his own business. It has been run asa family business since then, with Eileentaking charge of office business including theaccounts section. John is a Balbriggan man, bornand bred and is well known throughout the area.He is passionate about all things related to his
work and said, “Wereplace old timbers withmaintenance free UPVCproducts. Customerservice is of paramountimportance to us. If youdo one good job, youwill get another,” hesaid. All rotten timber isreplaced and all waste isremoved. The companywill also replacepointing and fix felt on
the first row. This is normally rotten and will needreplacing. The roof line is the most vulnerable partof your home as it is open to the wind, rain, sleet, frost and ice.The company only uses the best products on themarket and has carefully sourced its suppliers.“I’m an authorised installer for Freefoam Plastics, which supplies fascias and soffits and rainwater
systems. I’m also anauthorised installer forWavin Pipe, which isanother Balbriggancompany. This helps tokeep business in thelocality and is importantto me,” said John. The idea of keepingthings local is one of thekeys of success for thecompany and John and
Eileen will alwaysuse local workerswhen they are
engaged in a largeproject. “A lot of ourwork is as a result ofrepairs we carry out on
poor quality work by unqualified, mercenarychancers. We insist on a combination of value for
money, allied to top class products, with an excel-lent after sales service which includes a 20 yearguarantee on our products,” said John. The greatadvantage to having your gutters, fascia and soffitsrepaired or replaced is that it will instantly enhancethe appearance and value of your house, as well asproviding the necessary benefits of having a dampfree environment. The products are also mainte-nance free and there will never be a need to paintthem again. The company also supplies a leadingrange of colours and woodgrains for you to putyour individual mark on your house. The company supplies cast iron and castaluminium guttering. Seaside areas are prone toerosion of cast iron guttering and much of ourbusiness is generated replacing these. “Leakinggutters and rotting timbers are some of the mostcommon problems we encounter. We work withabout 20 local builders in the North County area,so our reputation for goodprofessional work is wellknown,” said John. The company hasmany domestic and
commercial customers.Their thorough atten-tion to detail and greatservice is typical of
what customers can expect and it helps them tokeep ahead of the competition. John wants todevelop the company to where they were fiveyears ago when they had a regular workforce. Thelonger that people let guttering go, the more expen-sive the project.Regular maintenancepays dividends in thelong run.A passionate John paidtribute to his manyloyal customers whohave supported thecompany over theyears. They are fullyC2 VAT registered andhave complete insur-ance cover. Eileen said,“You always get whatyou pay for and thecheapest price is notalways the best value inthe long run. Weprovide quality work, quality products andquality service,” shesaid. To be in businesssuccessfully for 16years, particularly oneas competitive as theguttering business, means that thecompany is doingsomething right and ison the right track.Getting a balancebetween cost andservice is a very deli-cate operation and willalways result in valuefor money and a satis-fied customer. JohnGallagher Services
have clearly managed to find this balance andcontinue to supply the best gutter, fascia and soffitinstallation and repairs in the North County andbeyond.

REILLYLeinster House, Kildare Street, Dublin 2 NEWSREILLY
Dear Resident
Tom O’Leary (my parliamentary Assistant) and I visited Holland recently on a factfinding tour of meetings regarding the Dutch Health service.
Tom O’Leary and I were very impressed with the health service in Holland.Tom and I also visited Northern Ireland and saw how they slashed the waiting listsin an eighteen month period.
In Government Fine Gael will deliver a radically new “Health Service” rather than a“Health System” which will put the patient as a customer and revenue source atthe heart of this new Health service.
Under our proposed new Insurance based Health Service everybody will be insuredand have access to a Free GP(Doctor) Care and Medication package. This willeffectively restore the benefits of the over 70s medical card to retired middleincome earners, like Teachers, Gardai, Nurses and Civil Servants.Children will also have access to free doctor and medication package, removing theworry of the cost of attending a doctor and paying for medication for hard pressedfamilies in these economically challenging times.
In Ireland we are spending as much money as Holland on health and they are gettingbetter value for money and a better service. To the naysayers who say we cannot afford it, remember the UK introduced theirNational Health Service after 6 years of a World War when they were on their kneeseconomically. They did it - We can do it - Yes we will! The Irish People are already paying for a Health Service but not getting it under
this incompetent Fianna Fail Green Government
I look forward to the challenge of delivering this radical new Health Service withyour support..Holland has it - Ireland deserves it - I, James Reilly, and Fine Gael will deliver
it.
Finally can I urge you to deliver a clear message to this Government on June 5th2009 in the Local and European Elections.
Dr James Reilly TDFine Gael
Health SpokespersonMore access to a world class health careA stimulus package for 100,000 jobsReal help for small and medium businessesEnding emigration with jobs for the “text generation”A total overhaul of politics in Ireland
“I’ll Fight For Metro!” Because Metro North will put 5,000 construction workers back on the job anddeliver 37,000 jobs long-term, in Fingal. When James Reilly recently met the Metro North Project Managers (RPA) here’swhat he found Metro North will deliver:5,000 construction jobs, saving €100m year in social welfare payments.5,000 new jobs at Dublin airport in the new international hub project.37,000 permanent jobs in Fingal, according to international consultants Indecon. And that’s not all!• Metro North will cost HALF THE FIGURE BANDIED ABOUT IN MEDIA.• It will be paid for over thirty years.• It’s a bargain because of the drop in build costs.“Metro North will connect North Dublin to the capital city in a new way, at a cost-effec-tive price while delivering desperately-needed jobs in Fingal.” METRO NORTH – ESSENTIAL FOR THE FUTURE OF FINGAL, PIVOTAL FOR JOBCREATION!
FINGAL NEEDS METRO NORTH
Fine Gael will fundamentally reorganise theentire Irish health system based on threefundamental principles:• Treat all patients equally: ending the distinc-
tion between public and private patients• Reward well run hospitals by paying hospi-
tals for the number of patients they treat andthe quality of care they provide
• Allow patients choose their own healthinsurer who will compete to deliver a uniformpackage of benefits. Following the Dutchmodel, everyone will have the same basicinsurance package giving them:
• Regular health checks• Free access to GP care and an extended
range of treatments in the community• Free hospital care and guaranteed waiting
timesThis new model is based on the Dutch Healthsystem which is ranked number 1 in Europe forQuality and number 2 for Value for Money. Bycontrast, Ireland was ranked number 15 forQuality and number 24 for Value for Money. Itwill strip away the big bureaucratic bulgecreated by the HSE.It will take five years to deliver. Fine Gael willstart by setting performance targets for hospi-tals, hunting down waste, and l inking ahospital’s budget to the number of patients ittreats and targets met.

Gormley’s Mayor Plan to Cost€5M - €8MJames Reilly T.D. has said that it isoutrageous that the cost of theFF/Green Party plan for the DublinMayor will run to at least €5 million ayear and that Dublin tax hikes will benecessary to pay for the Government’sbotched plan. This week, the ‘Local Government(Mayor and Regional Authority ofDublin) Bill 2010’ will be debated inthe Dáil despite the fact that JohnGormley has consistently refused toconfirm the final cost of the Office, state what the wages will be or the
amount of staff that will be needed. Deputy James Reilly said: “It is outrageous that a ‘Fingal Tax’ ofup to €2m on rate payers could verywell be on the way to pay for FiannaFáil and the Greens botched plans. “John Gormley has made the farcicalclaim that the Dublin Mayor legisla-tion is ready to go, that an election canbe held but that he does not know thesort of the office, the wages on offer, nor the amount of extra staff that willbe needed. “He is either deluded or is not beinghonest. The Minister’s Green Partycolleague, Paul Gogarty, has said that
John Gormley’s Office puts the cost at€5 million a year. Fingal CountyCouncil went even further, pricing theOffice at €8 million but then theMinister thrashed that claim withoutstating how much it will cost. “Every man and his dog in Dublinknow the strains local councils areunder trying to meet budgets. “As Fingal County Council intimated, the only way to meet the cost of theoffice is to hike taxes on Fingal busi-nesses and householders. Fianna Fáiland the Greens are about to hammerevery man, woman and child in thecountry in the Budget and, thanks tothe botched Mayor plans, this will befollowed by a ‘Dublin Tax’. “With the economy creaking, it isoutrageous for the Minister to forcefurther tax increases on homeownersand small businesses to pay for hisplan. His Bill looks flawed and in lightof this the Minister must defer anyelection for the Mayor till 2014.”

Reilly calls for GardaStation in Donabate
Deputy James Reilly called on the current government tomake plans for a new Garda station in Donabate.Donabate currently needs a Garda station to serve theexisting population and to serve the future planned growthof this strategic town in North County Dublin. The HSEand the Government are currently drawing up plans tomove the Central Mental Hospital to the grounds of StIta's and any such move should include extra communityfacilities and services for this growing town and I amcalling on the Government to make provision for a Gardastation in Donabate, said Deputy James Reilly. “If I am privileged enough to be elected by the people ofDublin North and if I am called on to serve as a Minister inthe next Government, I will be making this one of my toppriorities at the cabinet table” said Deputy Reilly

Reilly Welcomes Fingal CountyCouncil’s Commitment To NewSecondary School Site In Lusk
Local councillor, Tom O'Leary and Dr. James Reilly TD is pictured at the 5 acre siteof the proposed new secondary school in Lusk behind the existing Educate TogetherNational School.
Deputy James Reilly welcomes thecommittment conveyed to him bylocal Cllr Tom O’Leary that FingalCounty Council are at end stage intheir deal to purchase a new sitefor Lusk Secondary School. I alsowelocme the positive commitmentof the department of education tofund this priority project. Schoolchildren are travelling to nearbytowns of Rush, Skerries andSwords. The community school inSkerries I am informed by CllrTom O’Leary is full with a waitinglist of approximately 300. Cllr
Tom O'Leary also informs me thatSt Josephs secondary school inRush is also full. So Lusk needsthe building of a new secondaryschool to go ahead as soon aspossible to deal with the demandfor school places in this growingtown. Furthermore, Rush needs anew school site in order to relocatethe existing St Josephs secondaryschool which is also full and hasno room to extend at the existinglocation. I will lobby to make thishappen in the near future” saidDeputy Reilly.
I have received complaints from An Post customers in the Fingal towns thatthey are now required to travel to an isolated An Post sorting office in anIndustrial Estate in Balbriggan to collect mail and parcels that were notsuccessfully delivered to their homes because the resident was out shoppingor at work. Prior to this very inconvenient new arrangement which discom-modes An Post customers, the householder had the option of collecting unde-livered mail for 3 days in their local Post Office in the town they lived in.After 3 days if it was not collected then it was returned to the sorting officein Balbriggan. Now it goes back immediately to Balbriggan. Pensioners fromLusk, Rush, Skerries have to get taxis and trains and buses to Balbriggan andthen walk a mile or 2 to the sorting office or pay for another taxi in order tocollect important mail(registered mail) or parcels. Pensioners who don't haveaccess to their own transport cannot afford this expensive trek to Balbriggansaid Dr Reilly. This is not a service by An Post, it’s the imposition of unrea-sonable conditions on a vulnerable part of our society by a monopoly statecompany who appear to be losing their "service to the customer ethos". Theywill continue to lose more business if they insist on this course of action saidDeputy Reilly. I call on An Post to resume normal service to Fingal resi-dents, said Deputy Reilly.

James Reilly calls for all interested parties to be calledbefore Dáil Environment CommitteeJames Reilly has welcomed the €40 million judgement inthe pyrite case for Dublin homeowners but said thatissues still remain for those outside the capital. “This judgement is welcome and overdue. “A €40 million trust fund is to be set up by the devel-opers Menolly Homes and the Lagan Group to repaircracks in more than 700 homes in county Dublin --Drynam Hall in Kinsealy; Beaupark in Clongriffin; andMyrtle, The Coast in Baldoyle. Those whose propertiessuffered serious structural damage will have their homesrepaired and receive compensation. “I welcome an end to this saga as all of the affectedhomeowners have been left in limbo and continuously
ignored by the Minister for the Environment over the lastthree years. However, there are many more housingestates affected by pyrite nationwide and funds need to bealso established for these homeowners.” “It is crucial now that all people affected by defects andstructural damage within their houses are treated the sameway. I am calling on the Government to take responsi-bility and ensure that those people affected in other estates- whether they are owned by builders, NAMA or banks –that a similar fund is set up to deal with this issue. “I also call on Homebond to disclose the names of theestates that they have on their books that are affected bythis problem.” James Reilly has called for all interestedparties to be called before the Dáil EnvironmentCommittee without delay.
€40M Dublin Pyrite JudgementWelcome But Claims Outstanding
Elsewhere Including RushDeputy James Reillyopposes the termination ofthe very busy ambulanceservice provided by theparamedics in Dublin FireBrigade located in SwordsFire Station. This ambu-lance was called out on 4500emergency 999 calls lastyear. These were emergencysituations that the HSEcould not respond to withtheir existing service inSwords and Dublin. TheHSE claim they can respondto the calls that the DublinFire Brigade service inSwords currently provides. This is patently not inaccord with the facts. 4500people used the SwordsDublin Fire Brigade servicein North Dublin. I will befighting for the retention ofthis service for Malahide,Swords and all the towns north of Swords,Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush,Lusk, Donabate, Portraneand the rural villages.
Fingal has no full timeambulance north of Swords. The HSE cannot to continueto cut critical services likethis. One would be forgivenfor thinking that this is asinister move by the HSE tocut down on trolleynumbers in Beaumonthospital by axing an ambu-lance service to Fingal . Ifthis service is axed, ambu-lances will have to travel
from Finglas Fire Stationthrough congested Dublintraffic to reach Fingal resi-dents. This is just notacceptable, said DeputyReilly. I call on the otherdeputies in North Dublin tomake sure that this govern-ment do not axe the veryefficient and professionalambulance service providedby the excellent paramedicsin Swords Fire Brigade.

The HSE are using poorest families asa short term credit facility. Fine Gael Health Spokesperson, DrJames Reilly TD, condemned the intro-duction of the new prescription chargewhich will hit the poorest and sickestin society. Dr Reilly said, “We realise these aretough economic times but theGovernment should not be targetingthe poorest and sickest in society. Inthe UK such charges do not apply tothe lowest one third of the populationin terms of income, the very people whoqualify for a medical card here. InNorthern Ireland prescription chargesare being abolished. “Furthermore, it appears that the HSEis using the poorest families as a shortterm credit facility. According toDepartment of Health and Childrenstatement issued recently the HSE willput in place a new “refund system inorder to refund families who exceed the€10 monthly ceiling”. “With more than a million medical card
holders, the cost of administering therefund could far exceed revenue raisedfrom this new charge. This begs thequestion what will the charge be raisedto in the future? “This new legislation imposes a chargeof 50 cent on each prescription itemdispensed by a community pharmacist, with a monthly cap of €10, costingsome medical card holders as much as€120 per annum. “Rather the hitting the most vulner-able, Minister Harney should focus herefforts on achieving savings throughthe implementation of Drug ReferencePricing which will save 10 times asmuch. She should also concentrate onbringing down the cost of generic drugshere which in some cases are 10 timesas much as their equivalent inNorthern Ireland. “This penal measure further under-scores the Minister’s line that shemakes tough decisions. But why is italways the sickest and most vulnerablewho are at the receiving end?

Meltdown: almost 900,000 fewer tourists in 9 months - ReillyThe Irish tourism industry is still in meltdown as tourism figuresreleased last week show that a staggering 860,000 fewer visitorscame to Ireland in the first nine months of the year compared tothe same period last year, according to Fine Gael DeputyLeader, James Reilly TD. The CSO overseas travel figures showthat visitors to Ireland decreased by 15.7% from January toSeptember 2010 compared to the same period in 2009 and thatthe total number of visitors coming here for the third quarter this
year is down over 8%.
“Irish tourism continues to teeter on the brink as visitors continueto stay away in droves and Fianna Fáil and the Greens pursuepolicies that are ruinous to the industry. Our biggest market, theUK, is a disaster area for the industry with 456,100 fewer visitorscoming here, representing a drop of 18%; Over 330,000 fewervisitors came from the rest of Europe. The fact that there are100,000 fewer visitors to Ireland every month can only bedescribed as a crisis but, instead of aiding the industry, FiannaFáil is pursuing ruinous policies. “Mary Hanafin’s own advisors,The Tourism Renewal Group, pointed out that the Departure Taxis a disaster and should be axed. Yet the Minister defends it tothe bitter end. Unviable ‘NAMA-hotels’ continue to be proppedup while viable, family-run hotels are under considerable pres-sure to survive. Instead of being decisive, the Minister seemscontent to set up advisory groups and then conveniently ignoretheir recommendations. “Fine Gael in Government will bedifferent. We will pursue tourist friendly policies such as axing thetravel tax, focusing on making credit available for businesses andupgrading our business infrastructure, especially broadband tograb a hold of the international business tourism market.” saidDeputy James Reilly

2,200% rise in price of single medicineyet Government still dragging feet ondrug costs – Reilly Fine Gael Health Spokesperson, Dr JamesReilly TD, (Wednesday 10th November)said the wholesale price of hydrocortisonehas sky-rocketed 2,200% from 96c to€22, leaving patients with an enormousand unacceptable hike in their medicalbills, after the manufacturer of the medi-cine changed. Dr Reilly raised the matterwith the Taoiseach during the Dáil Orderof Business and called for the legislationfor drugs reference pricing to be broughtforward. “This issue was highlighted by a patienton the Pat Kenny radio show recently. I understand from my enquiries that thecost price of 30 hydrocortisone tablets was96c before the summer when a differentmanufacturer had the licence. Since the
change in manufacturer, the cost price hasbeen hiked to €22 for 30 tablets. Thismeans the cost to the patient has sky-rock-eted from €5 to €30. “I would like to know if there was a tenderfor this licence and, if not, why not. Whoawarded the licence and what has theCompetition Authority got to say aboutpatients being ripped off by this huge pricehike in a monopoly situation? “Furthermore, why is the Minister sittingon her hands when patients are beingfleeced? I called again for the long-promised drugs reference pricing legisla-tion to be brought forward so that greateraccess to cheaper generic drugs can bepermitted. In the long run, this is going tolead to savings for the patient and theState, so it is inexplicable that theGovernment has demonstrated a completelack of urgency to make it happen.”

have been achieved. Cutting outunnecessary red tape must be a keypart of a new Government’s agendato make the Irish business environ-ment competitive again. Why doesthe Government make such an impor-tant promise and only deliver on 4%of it? They cannot blame the reces-sion for this failure. It is part of whatwas recently branded “a ChronicImplementation Deficit Disorder,” fromwhich the Government suffers.
3 Years On And Only 4%Of Promised Red TapeReduction Delivered
Only 6% of jobs deliveredunder Government PRSI
rebate schemeLast December, the Government announceda refund of employer’s PRSI to companiesthat hired people who had been 6 months onthe dole. The target was 10,000 new jobs.Only 629 jobs have so far been supportedunder the scheme. Fine Gael believes thatall businesses need a PRSI relief and notjust those expanding. Our plan proposed tocut all wage bills by on average 3%. Thisplan would have helped make 1.7 millionjobs more secure and make it cheaper tohire new employees.
Fine Gael Will RationaliseState Business InspectionsAs part of its upcoming policy on overhauling the public sector,Fine Gael will propose a One Stop Shop for business inspec-tions by State bodies. Irish businesses face inspections from agrowing range of Government bodies, such as the NationalEmployment Rights Authority, the Health and SafetyAuthority, the Food Safety Authority, the EnvironmentalProtection Agency, and the local authorities. These inspectionsare often uncoordinated and repetitious. Huge efficiency gainsfor the State, and far lower compliance costs for business canbe secured if they are consolidated under one roof.

Ryan said, “Dessie Morgan gave alifetime of service to the Labour Party boththrough his time as a public representativeand party activist. A Man O’War native, heregarded his election as a town commissioner, serving from 1974 until 1979, as a greathonour. Skerries Tidy TownsAwards Ceremony
Skerries Tidy Towns had the opportunitylast week to reflect on another extremelysuccessful year for the seaside town. Theannual awards ceremony was well
attended by committee members, volun-teers and local politicians includingMayor Ken Farrell, Senator BrendanRyan, Cllr. Dave O’Connor and Cllr.Ciarán Byrne. Addressing those presentwas chairperson Anne Doyle, whoremarked how “to win the Dublin Countyand Regional Award, a Gold Award andadditionally to be commended in theSustainable Energy Awards is a hugeachievement.” Skerries finished a mere seven points off
the overall winner, Tallanstown this year,an outstanding achievement which hasbecome commonplace for the extremelyhardworking committee. Indeed, SCArepresentative Jane Landy spoke of the“virus that infects Skerries as a town towork so hard to achieve again and againin this competition”. Among the winnerson the night were Olive Delicatessen forBest Floral Display on a Business, MillHill for the Best Estate and “Storm in aTeacup” for Best Presented Business.Anne Doyle also especially commendedthe novel “Adopt-a-Beach” project, whichinvolved community members takingresponsibility for individual patches ofSkerries’ famous beaches and ensuringthey are kept litter free. Anne finished heraddress by noting how “the localprizewinners here are perfect examples ofthe way to go.”
Swords ManLands Rally Title
It’s been a vintage year for North Countymotorsports with champions beingproduced across the board. If you laid thechequered flags end to end, you would havea decent length course. Rally driving is notthe safest of pursuits, but like many motor-sports, it’s the adrenalin rush from speedand a driver’s dexterity in manoeuveringround a course that holds the attraction. Swords man, Robert Barrable has joinedSkerries man David Yeomans on the North County podium after he and navigator,Damien Connolly captured this year’s Citroen Racing title with a near flawlessseason. The two finished second in the season opener and from then on it waschequered flags all the way as they also captured the Irish title . “We started offwith a plan to learn with a new car, didn’t get off to the best of starts, but then westarted winning races. You always want to do well, but with a new car it takestime. It’s proved to be a very reliable car,“ Barrable told the County Leader. “Themechanics and the team around us deserve great credit”.

Interest Rate Hike To Hit Affordable HousingCouncillor Clare Daly (SP), has slammed as theHFA(Housing Finance Agency) the state bankwhich funds local authority housing loans for itsdecision to increase its lending rate by 0.25 percent. This decision was passed on to the Councillast Friday November 12th and they have beeninforming mortgage holders of the shock decision.Daly, the Chairperson of the County Council’sHousing SPC told the County Leader, “Increasingthe mortgage rate on affordable housing is a scan-dalous attack on those least able to bear the cost.On the eve of the budget it is a further blow forhouseholders bracing themselves for further cutsand tax increases. Many of these individuals willalready be struggling to cover the cost their mort-gage, and in many instances pay management feesand now out of the blue this increase is foisted onthem aswell. Where is the justification for this? The cost of borrowing has not increased. ECBlevels remain low, so why have the HFA upped therates? The government must intervene and directthe cancellation of this outrageous decision.”

PLAN FOR CHRISTMASEvery Christmas its always the same, scrambling aroundtrying to get money together to get the latest fad for thekids and every year it gets more expensive as the childrenget older and bolder in their letters to Santa. In such arecession, it’s even harder for the under pressure parent tomake ends meet, but the solution could be surprisinglysimple. As the financial crisis has unfolded over the pasttwo years, many businesses and shops have revived an oldconcept for modern times, namely the Christmas Club.Years ago families would make a weekly contributiontowards their children’s presents so that the cost could bespread evenly over the year, rather than having to come upwith the full amount on Christmas Eve. These days it’s notjust Christmas clubs, as there are also schemes run byfriends, families and neighbours which cover things asdiverse as holidays and coal. This year, as the financialmarkets continue to plummet, there are many advantagesto making weekly or monthly contributions to buy yourboy a bike, buying your girl a bit of bling or just treatingyourselves to a holiday in the sun next year. Most bigstores now run something akin to a Savings Club.

MotorbikeMeetings Must
Adapt To Survive
Following two deaths at local meetings inSkerries and Killalane the future ofMotorbike Road racing in the NorthCounty is looking grim. The tragic demisesof Miles Byrne and Victor Gilmore haveprompted a rethink about how the racesshould be run and there are controversialplans to even scrap some of the morepowerful classes.Under plans being considered by the organ-isers of the two races the LoughshinnyMotorcycle Club Superbike and Supersport600 road races could be scrappedcompletely. The clubs are proposing thatbikes be restricted to 650 twins as theupper limit with classic bikes excluded, claiming that none of the courses in theNorth County are suitable for morepowerful machines. Were these proposals to be adopted, it couldbe the death knell for a sport which hasalways been incredibly popular in theNorth County. The sport also brings inmuch needed revenue for local businessesdue to the volume of spectators who attendthe races, particularly in Skerries. The viewbeing expressed in certain quarters is thatthe sport needs to adapt to survive withwider and longer courses being sought aswell as reducing the number of categoriesand the number of championship races.

Your personal brand isregularly referred to in themedia but what is it? Yourpersonal brand is every-thing a prospectiveemployer can see aboutyou. Your presentation forinterview, the manner inwhich you present informa-tion about yourself such asyour email address and anysocial media you use suchas facebook, LinkedIn andTwitter. When considering your appli-cation to an employer some-thing as simple as an inappro-priate email address can leadto your appl ication beingdiscarded. Make sure youremail address is first namesurname and the domain
name. In the event thatyou have to create a
new one, do sobut remember
to check it. Most companiescommunicate via email; alsoplease remember to checkthe junk mail and spamfolders. The reason I say thisis that most companies uselogos on their email signa-tures, this can lead them toland in your junk mail. Facebook is a wonderful tool, however it has lead to peoplenot getting roles they thoughtthey were perfect for, it haslead to disciplinary action forpeople in work and it has leadto dismissal for others. We can argue whether it isappropriate for employers orprospective employers toview your facebook page ornot. The fact is if the informa-t ion is avai lable on theinternet it is available to all. IfI google your name as aprospective employer wouldyou be proud of what I wouldsee, word to the wise –ensure your facebook page isset to private! LinkedIn is a very powerfulnetworking and professionalsocial media tool. It is one ofthe fastest growing socialmedia tools and is used bymillions of professionals theworld over. Most companiesnow post vacancies throughLinkedIn and also havedetails about their company

Naul Allotments Wins AwardMalahide Man GreatHelp To Silver Surfers
Older people who surf the world wide web havebecome known as Silver Surfers and now a newwebsite will help them to access information aboutactivities and events for retired people across the NorthCounty. The people of Malahide owe an enormous debt of grat-itude to Dick Brennan. For the past two and a halfyears he has helped familiarise Silver Surfers withcomputer skills. He has provided PC classes threetimes a week, teaching over 1000 pupils the basic skillsof computing. He fully deseves the recognition for hisefforts by receiving this award. He was nominated by:Susan Lovatt, the libarian at Malahide Library. The new site will also provide details of ActiveRetirement Associations countrywide while alsokeeping them in touch with ongoing events and activi-ties. The website is the brainchild of Active RetirementIreland who have found through studies that internetuse is on the increase with older people with a surgebetween in those between 50 and 64 where it is esti-mated that around a third of people in that age bracketare surfing the net regularly. Usage is lower amongthose over 65 but ACI estimate that numbers aregrowing as resources improve. Research shows thatolder people are finding the internet a useful tool forbooking tickets, holidays or even just checking theirentitlements. The ease of being able to keep in touchwith family and friends via email and Skype is alsoincreasing usage by the North County’s older citizens.
The winner of the 2010 AllotmentProvider Award is Fingal Allotments, runby the McDonald family from Naul. Mr.Gearóid McDonald was presented with thetop prize at the recent Allotment Awards. The allotments had other reasons to cele-brate also, given that two of the allotmentholders also won awards in their ownright in individual categories. HelenKessie from Balbriggan won secondplace in the Novice category and JohnWarren of Malahide also won secondplace in the Experienced Gardenercategory.Local TD and formerHorticulture Minister, Trevor Sargentopened the Allotments a number ofmonths ago and expressed his delighton hearing the good news for the localarea generally. Sargent said ‘FingalAllotments have captured the publicmood in developing such a popularfacility in the Naul. The profusion ofallotments provided privately and bythe County Council, as well as anumber of community and schoolgardens and a growing network ofGrow It Yourself groups all help tofocus attention on the genuine wealthcreating ability of the area to growfood,” he said In congratulating HelenaKessie, John Warren and GearóidMcDonald, I also wish to encourage
allotment holders and back-gardeners tocontact their local farmers’ market if theyhave a surplus of produce so that we cancontinue to encourage a greater awarenessof what grows locally in the North Countyand support local producers - both largeand small.
