Beste festivalbezoeker, Europees kampioen of niet, North Sea Jazz is dit jaar 100% voetbalvrij. Dus: drie dagen lang muziek, muziek en nog eens muziek in Ahoy. Terugkijkend was 2011 voor ons een zeer geslaagd jaar. In Rotterdam scheen bijna het hele weekend de zon, letterlijk en fi guurlijk. Veel legendarische concerten, met de drie nachtconcerten van Prince als slagroom op de taart. Publiek, artiesten en organisatie; iedereen ge-noot van een geweldige editie. En amper zes weken later begonnen wij aan het volgende hoofdstuk, de tweede editie van Curaçao NSJ. Net als in Rotterdam was het één groot feest, maar dan onder een zwoele Caribische sterrenhemel en met Stevie Wonder als onvergetelijke afsluiter. En nu op naar NSJ 2012! In deze brochure vind u het resultaat van maandenlang puzzelen, onderhandelen, vergaderen en discussiëren van onze programmeurs. Het resultaat mag er dan ook wezen. Zoals altijd vormt jazz met haar vele gezichten de stevige basis, maar komen uiteraard ook veel soul, blues, world, pop en andere genres voorbij. Ook dit jaar weer een aantal thema’s om nieuwe ontwikkelingen, trends en sounds in de muziek te duiden en zichtbaar te maken. Lees er alles over in de highlights, vanaf pagina 11.
“Wie is dit jaar uw favoriete artiest?”, wordt mij vaak gevraagd. Deze vraag is onmogelijk te beantwoorden. Zoveel muziek, zoveel talent, zoveel creativiteit onder één dak is onmogelijk terug te brengen tot een paar namen. Maar toch, in de wetenschap dat ik de rest hiermee tekort doe, hierbij een voorzichtige vooruitblik.
De Artist In Residence is terug, en hoe! Joshua Redman, een van de lei-dende musici van de huidige generatie, laat elke dag zijn veelzijdigheid zien. De eerder genoemde nachtconcerten krijgen een vervolg met niemand minder dan soulrocker Lenny Kravitz. Ook Van Morrisonis na zes jaar weer terug op het festival. En na zijn veelbesproken, legendarische show op NSJ 2000 is het eindelijk zover: the return of D’Angelo.
Wegens groot succes en op veler verzoek dit jaar op herhaling: Ahmad Jamal, Janelle Monáe, Trombone Shorty, Robert Glasper en Gregory Porter. Verder: een voortreffelijk zingende en spelende acteur Hugh Laurie, Rufus Wainwright, Gipsy Queen Esma Redzepova en publieks-lievelingen Jill Scott, George Benson en Tony Bennett.
Maar ook zeer veel nieuw jazztalent: Nate Wooley in Trumpet And Drums, Rez Abassi met zijn Invocation, Harold Lopez Nussa Quintet, Kris Davis en van eigen bodem Bart Wirtz met zijn kwintet, Tin Men & the Telephone, Bruut! en The More Socially Relevant Jazz Ensemble. In de aanverwante genres zien we nieuwe beloftes als Michael Kiwa-nuka, Lianne la Havas, Finn Silver, de geweldige Bernhoft en zo kan ik nog een hele tijd doorgaan…
Zoals ik al zei; slechts een kleine greep uit het overweldigende aan-bod van North Sea Jazz 2012. Wij kijken er naar uit, u hopelijk ook.

Het festival staat wereldwijd bekend om de programmering van vele muzikale genres, variërend van traditionele tot experimentele jazz en van gospel tot hiphop. Een inspiratie-bron voor elke muziekliefhebber en de velen die in onze stad en daarbuiten zelf met mu-ziek bezig zijn. Of je nu in een koor zingt, een brassband leidt of een instrument leert be-spelen, op North Sea Jazz kun je zien, horen en voelen wat muziek teweeg kan brengen.

WELKOM BIJ NORTH SEA JAZZ!Rotterdam is er klaar voor: North Sea Jazz 2012. Op 6, 7 en 8 juli wordt Ahoy zoals elk jaar omgetoverd tot het grootste indoor muziekspektakel ter wereld. Het is alweer de zevende editie die plaatsvindt in de Maasstad, en de 37e jaargang van het festival.
Uiteenlopende namen als John Hiatt, Van Morrison, Pat Metheny, Kurt Elling, Tony Bennett, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, Esperanza Spalding, Hugh Laurie en d’Angelo tonen dat North Sea Jazz, net als op voorgaande edities, iedere bezoeker op z’n wenken bedient. In navolging van de weergaloze nachtconcerten van Prince vorig jaar, sluit Lenny Kravitz de vrijdag af met een optreden tot in de kleine uurtjes. Bovendien treedt Joshua Redman als Artist In Residence het hele weekend op met verschillende projecten.
North Sea Jazz staat ook buiten onze landsgrenzen bekend als het evenement waar in drie dagen het verleden, heden én de toekomst van de jazz langskomen. Naast die stevige basis van jazz komen veel genres voorbij, zoals blues, soul, funk, hiphop, world, pop en nog veel meer.

RIjkE GESChIEdEnIS Het festival begon in 1976 in het Nederlands Congresgebouw in Den Haag. Destijds tra-den driehonderd muzikanten op in zes zalen. De eerste editie trok negenduizend bezoe-kers, die konden genieten van optredens van grootheden als Sarah Vaughn, Count Basie, Stan Getz en Dizzy Gillespie. Door de jaren heen zijn de jazzlegendes blijven komen, en breidde het festival zich steeds meer uit. In 2006 verhuisde North Sea Jazz naar de huidige locatie: het Rotterdamse Ahoy. Daar verwacht de organisatie dit jaar ruim duizend muzikanten, verdeeld over bijna 150 optre-dens en dertien podia. Ook de bezoekersaan-tallen zijn flink gestegen en lagen de laatste jaren tussen de 65.000 en 70.000 mensen. Toch blijft het festival zijn intieme en gezel-lige karakter houden.
ETEn, dRInkEn, wInkElEnOp het festival is het niet alleen genieten van prachtige muziek, maar ook van heerlijk eten en drinken. Van Thaise curry’s tot pizza en alle wereldgerechten er tussenin, van bier tot tropische cocktails; u vindt talloze lekkernijen bij de vele horecagelegenheden. Daar kunt u betalen met speciale festivalmunten, die te verkrijgen zijn bij de balie in de entreehal en bij uitgiftemachines op verschillende locaties (betaling met pin). De munten kunnen tot het einde van het festival geretourneerd worden aan de kassa bij de uitgang.Winkelen kan naar hartelust op North Sea Jazz. U vindt winkels en stands op verschil-lende locaties. Bijna alles is hier te vinden: elpees en cd’s, boeken en tijdschriften, mu-ziekinstrumenten, sieraden, kleding en kunst. De populaire NSJ merchandise zoals T-shirts, tassen, posters en nog veel meer is te koop
op verschillende punten. Ook zijn daar de meeste recente tijdsschema’s en de Who’s Who Festival Guide te verkrijgen.
2012: GlobAlE SAmEnwERkInGEn Het festival heeft dit jaar een nóg internatio-naler tintje; in het kader van het thema Jazz In The Third Space benadrukt de organisatie de tendens dat de huidige jazzscene steeds meer grens- en zelfs werelddeel-overschrijdende samenwerkingen kent. Zo kunt u genieten van de opvoering door het Metropole Orkest van Nights On Earth, dat dirigent Vince Men-doza schreef met muzikanten van over de hele wereld. In het Mosaic Project van Terri Lyne Carrington zien we bovendien landge-note Tineke Postma schitteren. Amerikanen Rez Abassi, Tigran Hamasyan en Vijay Iyer laten zich elk inspireren door hun elders ge-legen roots en Oumou Sangaré & Bela Fleck brengen de VS en Afrika muzikaal bij elkaar. Maar er zijn nog veel meer voorbeelden van deze globalisering van de muziek, en de jazz in het bijzonder. Laat u verrassen op North Sea Jazz 2012!

JAZZ IN THE THIRD SPACE De jazzscene ontwikkelt zich steeds interna-tionaler. In de huidige tijd van digitale revo-lutie legt en onderhoudt men gemakkelijk contacten over de hele wereld, en kan op af-stand muzikale bestanden uitwisselen. Tevens is een muzikant steeds vaker een wereldbur-ger die veel reist en in meerdere landen werkt of zelfs woont. Er ontstaan groepen met verschillende nationaliteiten, waarbij ieder-een eigen bagage meeneemt en waardoor de klank van jazz verandert. Voorbeelden zien we door de hele program-mering heen. Zoals bij het Metropole Orkest, waarvoor dirigent Vince Mendoza Nights On Earth schreef met muzikanten uit de hele wereld. De uitvoering wordt behalve door Amerikaanse muzikanten als John Scofi eld en Joe Lovano, ook gedaan door de Vietnamees-Franse gitarist Nguyen Le en de Braziliaans-Nederlandse vocaliste Lilian Vieira. Door zijn duizelingwekkende drumstijl zweept New Yorker Dafnis Prieto het publiek op met complexe ritmes uit zijn geboorteland Cuba. Zijn Proverb Trio is een uitdagende combi-natie van jazz, straatpoëzie en improvisatie.
GATEWAY TO THE ORIENT Ook in de Yenisei-zaal staat het programma in het teken van de voortschrijdende inter-nationalisering. ‘Een virtuoos’ noemde the New York Times de Syrische klarinettist Ki-nan Azmeh. Op het festival treedt hij op met de Sri Lankese pianist Dinuk Wijeratne en de Nederlandse trompettist Eric Vloeimans.
De 400-jarige culturele uitwisseling tussen Turkije en Nederland wordt onderstreept door optredens van Dhafer Youssef & Hüsnü Senlendirici Group en Ogüz Buyukberber. De progressieve Turkse basklarinettist Buyukber-ber vond gelijkgestemden in Rus Simon Naba-tov en Nederlanders Tobias Klein en Wolter Wierbos. De uitwisseling komt tot stand in samenwerking met het Istanbul Jazz Festival.
CLEAN FEED RECORDSHet vooruitstrevende Portugese label Clean Feed bestaat tien jaar. Het label brengt mu-ziek uit van de top van de Amerikaanse im-provisatie, maar ook van belangrijke Euro-pese spelers. De New Yorkse Village Voice omschreef het mooi: “Met zijn groeiende catalogus van onverschrokken improvisato-ren – Amerikaans en Europees, gevestigd en opkomend – legt Clean Feed niet alleen dit jazztijdperk vast, maar helpt het creëren.” De New York Times vult aan: “Dus het moet geen complete shock meer zijn dat een van de meest vitale platenmaatschappijen in de scene gevestigd is in Lissabon.”Vanavond zien we in de Volga de Amerikaan-se pianist Angelica Sanchez met onder meer de Franse gitarist Marc Ducret. Pianiste Kris Davis komt uit Canada en in het trio van de Amerikaanse drummer Tom Rainey speelt de Duitse saxofoniste Ingrid Laubrock.
NEW URBAN JAZZDe Darling is vanavond het toneel voor een nieuwe groep artiesten uit grote Amerikaanse steden als New York en Los Angeles. Deze nieuwe generatie jazzmuzikanten heeft de jazzhistorie goed bestudeerd en voegt daar vijftig jaar soul, R&B en hiphop aan toe. Behalve Dafnis Prieto staat hier zanger Gregory Porter met zijn warme stemgeluid, die geïn-spireerd is door zangers als Nat King Cole en
Donny Hathaway. Zanger Jose James schakelt moeiteloos tussen John Coltrane en Flying Lotus en Robert Glasper Experiment creëert een nieuw muzikaal omniversum op basis van jazz, hiphop, R&B en rock.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: JOSHUA REDMAN Redman is een van de nieuwe iconen in de jazz, die samen met leeftijdsgenoten als Bran-ford Marsalis en Roy Hargrove, midden jaren ’90 de voorhoede van de akoestische jazz vormde. Met een voet stevig in de bebop tra-ditie, maar het andere been vooruit, op zoek naar een nieuw geluid. Hij experimenteert met bijzondere bezettingen. In zijn eerste kwartet speelden de toekomstige grootheden Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, en Brian Blade. Redman is een publiekslieveling: een virtuoos op saxofoon en een sterke podiumpersoon-lijkheid, die zich tijdens zijn optredens volle-dig geeft en met regelmaat verrast vanwege nieuwe wegen die hij inslaat. Op het festival laat hij een aantal van zijn nieuwe projecten horen. Vandaag doet hij een gastoptreden met het Metropole Orkest en onderwerpt zich aan een Q&A-sessie in het NRC Jazz Café.
LENNY KRAVITZ De vrijdag wordt afgesloten met een nacht-concert door Lenny Kravitz, in navolging van de weergaloze optredens van Prince vorig jaar. De singer-songwriter en multi-instru-mentalist grijpt op zijn laatste album Black & White America terug op muziek die hem van-af zijn jeugd beïnvloedde, waaronder R&B, gospel, blues en jazz. Ondanks een aantal grote rockhits is zijn muziek altijd soulvol ge-weest. Jonge, aanstormende jazzmusici had-den met regelmaat een prominente rol in zijn bands, zoals recent de uit de New Orleansbrasstraditie afkomstige Trombone Shorty en eerder drumster Cindy Blackman.
JAZZ IN THE THIRD SPACE De globale verbroedering binnen de jazz heeft meer oorzaken dan alleen het digitale tijdperk; ook emigranten en hun volgende generaties zorgen voor een mix van invloe-den. Daarvan zien we vanavond een aantal interessante voorbeelden. Rez Abassi werd geboren in Pakistan maar groeide op in Amerika, en incorporeert de muziek van zijn geboorteland in zijn compo-sities en zijn spel. Als gelauwerd jazzpianist onderzoekt Vijay Iyer de laatste jaren met ge-lijkgestemden als Abassi en Rudresh Mahan-thappa hoe de klassieke Indiase muziek een plek te geven in zijn werk. Vanavond treedt hij op met zijn trio. Miles Okazaki is een Amerikaan van Japanse afkomst en mengt Aziatische muziek en fi -losofie met hedendaagse gecomponeerde en geïmproviseerde jazz. New Yorker Ti-gran Hamasyan kleurt zijn muziek met zijn Armeense roots. Michiel Braam brengt met zijn Hybrid 10tet topmusici samen uit drie verschillende muzikale en geografi sche we-relden. Nederlander Bart Wirtz en Belg Robin Verheyen zijn elk naar New York afgereisd om zichzelf daar uit te dagen met de huidige top van jazzmuzikanten. Beiden presenteren hun groepen dit jaar op North Sea Jazz.
NEDERLANDS SUCCESOver Nederland gesproken: onze vaderlandse jazznamen doen het uitstekend in binnen- en
buitenland. Yuri Honing is de trotse winnaar van de Boy Edgar-prijs. Wolfert Brederode mag zich de eerste Nederlander noemen die werd getekend op het befaamde ECM-label. Hij bracht recent zijn tweede album uit met een prachtige internationale bezetting. Zeker de moeite van het noemen waard: Tin Men & The Telephone, die een heel eigen concept maken door jazz, beeld en ringtones te com-bineren tot een zeer entertainende show. De Cubaanse pianist Ramón Valle beschouwen we inmiddels als Nederlander. Hij nam een prachtig album op met Jesse van Ruller; hoog tijd om deze groep tussen de huidige grote jazznamen te plaatsen in de Hudson zaal.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: JOSHUA REDMAN Vanavond geeft Joshua Redman twee bijzon-dere optredens, waarin hij bewijst een veel-zijdig saxofonist te zijn. Ten eerste is daar Ja-mes Farm, het in 2009 opgerichte akoestische kwartet met Aaron Parks, Matt Penman en Eric Harland, dat voor het eerst op North Sea Jazz te zien is. Alle spelers hebben een even belangrijke functie. Ieder lid heeft een eigen herkenbare stijl van componeren, maar door de hechtheid van de muzikanten creëert de band toch een onmiskenbaar eigen geluid. Vanavond beleeft het Joshua Redman Sax Quartet zijn Nederlandse première. Redman schreef de bijzondere muziek speciaal voor de bezetting waarmee het concert wordt uit-gevoerd: Chris Cheek, Chris Potter en Mark Turner.
NEW FUSION Na een jarenlange ‘radiostilte’ in de fusion zijn er tegenwoordig jonge muzikanten die in de lijn van hun voorgangers jazz mengen met rock, en nu ook electronische muziek.
Ze zoeken nieuwe vormen in de fusion, wat resulteert in een fris nieuw geluid. Vanavond zijn voorbeelden daarvan in de Darling te vinden, zoals Yuri Honing Wired Paradise, Christian Scott en Rudder.
RAMBLING BLUES In de Congo staat een bijzonder programma met een fl inke dosis ‘oudheidkunde’. Heri-tage Blues Orchestra geeft in haar muziek een les bluesgeschiedenis met een ‘transatlantic’ line-up, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey speelt een suite waarin het Amerikaanse verleden is ver-werkt. Bij de andere twee artiesten huist in zichzelf al een rijke historie. Souldiva Betty Wright, inmiddels tegen de zestig, nam haar nieuwe album op met The Roots. En bluesle-gende Taj Mahal maakt na een lange afwezig-heid eindelijk zijn terugkeer op Nederlandse bodem.
BIJZONDERE PROJECTEN In de Amazon treedt Hugh Laurie op, als acteur bekend in de titelrol van de televisie-serie House M.D.. Maar Laurie heeft meer kwaliteiten: hij zingt en bespeelt meerdere instrumenten. Vorig jaar bracht hij zijn eerste album uit, Let Them Talk, dat werd geprodu-ceerd door John Henry en waarvoor hij zich liet inspireren door de New Orleans blues. Allen Toussaint maakte de blazersarrange-menten. Zanger Rufus Wainwright maakte zijn nieu-we album Out Of The Game met topproducer Mark Ronson. En in zijn Unity Band omringt Pat Metheny zich wederom met topmuzi-kanten als saxofonist Chris Potter, de jonge veelbelovende en eigenzinnige bassist Ben Williams, en topdrummer Antonio Sanchez.
JAZZ IN THE THIRD SPACE Ook vanavond zien we prachtige internati-onale combinaties op North Sea Jazz. Zo is daar de Japanse Hiromi, die speelt met Ame-rikanen Anthony Jackson en Simon Philips. De combinatie van Oumou Sangaré & Bela Fleck, grote stem uit Mali en de Amerikaanse jazz banjospeler bekend uit zijn eigen groep The Flecktones, gaat zelfs over de noemer jazz heen en maakt een crossover naar de wereldmuziek. Het Nederlandse Surinam Music Ensemble treedt op met Amerikaan en oud-Headhunter Bennie Maupin. Ook bijzonder is Take Five: Europe, een sti-muleringsproject voor muzikanten uit Eu-ropa. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: JOSHUA REDMANVoor zijn laatste project tijdens dit festival-weekend koos Redman niet de minste mede-spelers. In de Hudson geeft de Artist In Resi-dence van dit jaar een concert met The Bad
Plus, het jazztrio met pianist Ethan Iverson. De groep maakt muziek waarbij ze terug-grijpt op de (voornamelijk rock-) invloeden uit eigen jeugd. The Bad Plus is uitgegroeid tot een echte publiekslieveling, en de combi-natie met Joshua Redman belooft spannend en energiek te worden.
JAZZ CLASSICS Vanavond kan het publiek genieten van een keur aan onvervalste jazzveteranen. Zo staan Tony Bennett en het Wayne Shorter Quartet in de Amazon, en speelt Monty Alexander in de Hudson. In de Madeira is bijna de hele avond gevuld met oude rotten, zoals Jim Hall, Benny Golson en Archie Shepp. Zij worden daar voorafgegaan door David Kweksilber, een jongere, progressieve musicus, die echter wel zijn invloeden uit de swing haalt.
JONG TALENTBernhoft en Lianne La Havas, beide spelend in de Mississippi, zijn veelbelovende nieuwe talenten op het snijvlak van de soul en sin-ger-songwriter. La Havas, afkomstig uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk, maakt kleine, ontroe-rend mooie nummers waarbij ze zichzelf be-geleidt op gitaar. Bernhoft maakt loops van zijn eigen zang, bas- en drumlijnen, waarna hij daar overheen zingt en gitaar speelt. Het
zorgt voor een heel eigen geluid, wat hem reeds een fenomeen maakte in zijn eigen land Noorwegen. Beiden zijn grote talenten waar-voor de verwachtingen hooggespannen zijn.
BIJZONDERE PROJECTEN Na Tribute To Miles vorig jaar brengt North Sea Jazz in 2012 weer een mooi eerbetoon aan Miles Davis, deze keer onder de titel Miles Smiles. Daarin spelen Kenny Garrett, Robben Ford, Joey DeFrancesco, Darryl Jones en Omar Hakim, die allemaal op verschil-lende momenten als bandlid van de grote Miles speelden. Trompettist Wallace Roney benoemde hij zelf als opvolger. Roney had de eer om bij de meester te mogen studeren vanaf 1985 tot aan zijn dood. En tenslotte: hij is er weer! D’Angelo maakt vanavond zijn opwachting in de Nile. Na zijn legendarische optreden op North Sea Jazz uit 2000, tot dan toe zijn eerste concert in ons land, verdween het muzikale wonderkind let-terlijk van het toneel. In de jaren die volgden verscheen slechts sporadisch ergens online een fl ard muziek. Totdat d’Angelo eerder dit jaar plotseling weer opdook en meteen drie briljante shows deed, elk voor een uitverkocht Paradiso. Dat doet hij nog eens dunnetjes over op het festival.

De Paul Acket Award 2012 wordt ondersteund door Stichting BNP Paribas. Deze Stichting helpt al 17 jaar om de carrières van jazzmuzikanten te ontwikkelen door het steunen van opnames en concerten.
UITREIKINGDe uitreiking van de Paul Acket Award ‘Artist Deserving Wider Recognition’ vindt plaats op zaterdag 7 juli in Volga.
Craig Taborn is de winnaar van de Paul Acket Award 2012. Deze prijs wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt door het North Sea Jazz Festival en is bedoeld voor muzikanten die een nog bredere erkenning verdienen voor hun buitengewone muzikale kwaliteiten.
De organisatie van het festival wil met deze prijs aandacht geven aan getalenteerde jazzmuzikanten die aan het begin van hun carrière staan. Deze artiesten zijn al bekend binnen de jazzscene, maar nog niet bij het grote publiek.
De ‘Artist Deserving Wider Recognition’ ontvangt naast een trofee ook een cheque ter waarde van € 5.000,-, bedoeld om de carrière van de winnaar te versterken. Voorgaande winnaars van deze award waren onder meer Arve Hendriksen (2011), Christian Scott (2010), Stefano Bollani (2009), Adam Rogers (2008), Gianluca Petrella (2007), Conrad Herwig (2006) en Ben Allison (2005).
Winnaar van de Paul Acket Award 2012 is Craig Taborn, een Ameri-kaanse toetsenist en componist die zijn loopbaan begon in de jaren negentig. Taborn speelt in een brede muzikale context, variërend van straight-ahead jazz tot ver daarbuiten: hij speelt met zowel jonge jazz-muzikanten als gearriveerde veteranen en zelfs met techno-producers. Vorig jaar bracht hij het solo pianoalbum Avenging Angel uit op het gerenommeerde ECM-label.
Tijdens het festival zal Craig Taborn op zaterdag 7 juli te zien zijn in de formatie PRISM, met ook Dave Holland, Kevin Eubanks en Eric Harland. Hij geeft die avond tevens een solo-optreden en neemt de Paul Acket Award in ontvangst.
JURY 2012Een eerste selectie van kanshebbers werd gemaakt door een jury van experts, bestaande uit Tim Jackson (Monterey Jazzfestival, California, USA), Ken Pickering (Vancouver International Jazzfestival, Canada), Willem Kniknie (Muziekpodium Zeeland, Nederland), Frank van Berkel ( Jazz International Rotterdam, Nederland), Xavier leMettre (Banlieues Bleues, France). Zij kozen de genomineerden, waarna een gezelschap van internationale jazzcritici en programmeurs van jazzfestivals en -clubs hun stem uitbracht.
JAZZ21 - ARTIST OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM BY IJFO
De Internationale Jazz Festival Organisatie (IJFO) is een nieuw programma gestart om de ontwikkeling van opko-mende jazzmuzikanten actief te promoten en steunen.
De IJFO, die bestaat uit zeventien van de grootste jazzfestivals in Europa en Noord-Amerika, verklaart de noodzaak voor het nieuwe initiatief als volgt: “De muziekindustrie heeft in de laatste tien jaar grote veranderingen ondergaan en staat op onstabiele grond. Veel artiesten besloten zichzelf te promoten via het internet en andere doe-het-zelf mogelijkheden. Als gevolg daarvan ontstond een algehele afname van promotiewerkzaamheden en wordt het steeds moeilijker om nieuw talent in contact te brengen met nieuw publiek.”
Volgens de organisatie is het van belang dat de jazz een nieuwe ge-neratie iconische muzikanten ontwikkelt waar jonge en toekomstige fans zich mee kunnen vereenzelvigen. Jongere jazzmusici kunnen zeker naam maken, en deden dat ook, zoals onder meer Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman en Brad Mehldau in de jaren ’90. De IJFO is echter van mening dat het nu de aandacht moet vestigen op de muzikanten die in hun voetsporen treden.
Daarom zal zij de komende drie jaar zes nieuwe talenten volgen en steunen. Dat houdt in dat deze artiesten optredens krijgen op IJFO festivals, en actief worden gepromoot via speciale programmering en media aandacht. Daarnaast worden ze actief geholpen hun aanhang te vergroten door ze verschillende jaren achtereen te boeken.
De eerste groep musici binnen het Artist Opportunity Program by IJFO bestaat uit Ambrose Akinmusire (VS), Stefano Bollani (Italië), Mathias Eick (Noorwegen), Tigran Hamasyan (VS), Gretchen Parlato (VS) en Phronesis (UK).

Muziek Centrum Nederland en het North Sea Jazz Festival verstrekken in samenwerking met het Fonds Podiumkunsten een vrije compositieopdracht aan een jonge en veelbelo-vende Nederlandse jazzcomponist. Dit jaar is dat de gitarist en componist Bram Stadhouders.
Bram Stadhouders (1987, Tilburg) wordt beschouwd als een van de meest interessante en opkomende improviserende musici van Europa. Met zijn gitaar en technologie verkent hij de grenzen tussen ambient,hedendaagse elektronische muziek en vrij geïmproviseerde jazz. Bram verrast het publiek met zijn eigen manier van improviseren en compo-neren, die hij ontwikkelde door te experimenteren met verschillende technologieën en in verschillende contexten. De inmiddels vijf cd’s die hij op zijn eigen label uitbracht zijn daar het bewijs van.
Tijdens North Sea Jazz 2011 trad Bram op met de Noorse Terje Isungset, op een gitaar gemaakt van ijs. Ook werd hij in 2011 geselec-teerd om deel te nemen aan het programmaTake Five: Europe (zie pagina 21). Bovendien is Bram de jongste muzikant ooit aan wie de North Sea Jazz Compositieopdracht is toegekend.
Op vrijdag 6 juli vindt in zaal Yenisei de première plaats van de door Bram Stadhouders uitgevoerde compositieopdracht.

ART POSTER COMPETITIEDe winnaar van de art poster competitie is dit jaar Denise Nuijen. De studente leverde het beste ontwerp, dat tijdens het festival te koop is als zeefdruk en op T-shirts.
De jaarlijkse art poster competitie is inmiddels traditie, en een begrip op North Sea Jazz. De eerste poster dateert uit 1981 en werd ontwor-pen door Rafal Olbinski. Sinds de verhuizing van het festival naar Rotterdam in 2006 wordt elk jaar een ontwerpwedstrijd gehouden onder studenten aan de Willem de Kooning Academy. Alle fi nalisten worden tijdens het festival tentoongesteld; zo wil North Sea Jazz jong talent een platform geven om hun werk te tonen.
De jury koos dit jaar voor Denise Nuijen omdat haar poster meteen opviel door de speelse samenwerking van kleur en typografi e. De manier waarop lettertype en kleuren zich verenigen is volgens de jury een expressieve weergave van de kakofonie van klanken die je ook ervaart op het festival. Een geweldige mengeling van vele stijlen, die op een plek samenkomen.

TAKE FIVE: EUROPE
Na het succes van zeven Britse Take Five-edities is er nu Take Five: Europe. Het programma, ontworpen door de internationale muziekproducent Serious (UK), heeft als doel om een aantal van Europa’s meest getalenteerde en opkomende jazzmusici de mogelijkheid te geven hun vakmanschap verder te ontwikkelen.
De eerste editie van deze Europese masterclass loopt van augustus 2011 tot juli 2012. Een comité van experts uit de jazzindustrie, waar-onder vertegenwoordigers van alle partnerorganisaties, selecteerde twee musici per land uit Frankrijk, Nederland, Noorwegen, Polen en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Uit Nederland zijn dat violist Oene van Geel en gitarist Bram Stadhouders.
De deelnemende artiesten krijgen de unieke kans om alle aspecten van hun toekomstige carrière te bespreken, verkennen en versterken, op zowel zakelijk als muzikaal gebied. Tijdens een verblijf op het Engelse platteland gaan zij hiermee gezamenlijk aan de slag. De muzikanten krijgen de gelegenheid om te spelen op belangrijke festivals en podia door heel Europa en worden aangemoedigd onderlinge samenwer-kingen aan te gaan.
Het project wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt met steun van de Europese Commissie en diverse partners verspreid over het hele continent. Muziek Centrum Nederland en het North Sea Jazz Festival zijn de Nederlandse partners van Take Five: Europe. MusicXport.nl, het pro-gramma van MCN om de positie van Nederlandse artiesten in het buitenland te verbeteren en de exportmogelijkheden te vergroten, draagt bij aan Take Five: Europe.

INTERACTION!JAZZ ART AT NORTH SEA JAZZ Interactie is het sleutelwoord voor de jaarlijkse art show op het festival. Niet alleen exposeren Thea Gerritsen, de Duitser Alfred Gockel, Mexicaanse schilder Jazzamoart en het Nederlandse kunst- en productiecollectief Venour in de Madeira Foyer (op de tweede etage); de laatste drie schilderen ook live tijdens concerten op Congo Square.
Muziekfotografen, waaronder Rob Verhorst, Peter van Breukelen en Joke Schot, presente-ren hun beste foto’s rond het thema ‘Inter-actie’ in de Fast Lane, op de begane grond. Tevens zijn hier muziekfoto’s te zien van An-dreas Terlaak, Paul Bergen en Geert van Kes-
teren, die zij maakten op buitenlandse edities van North Sea Jazz. In de Mekong-zaal, op de derde etage, toont Music Inspired Art de ont-werpen voor de jaarlijkse art poster-wedstrijd, gemaakt door studenten van de Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam.
Ook buiten het festival in juli om organiseert North Sea Jazz diverse concerten, in samenwerking met de Oosterpoort in Groningen, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven en het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Zo staan voor het aankomende jaar de volgende bijzondere jazzartiesten op het programma:

TALKING JAZZIn het NRC Jazz Café kunt u tijdens het festival meer te weten komen over de optredende acts.
Onder de noemer ‘NRC Meets The Artist’ houdt muziekjournalist Amanda Kuyper elke festivaldag interviews met artiesten, die u kunt bijwonen. Tevens vinden bij-zondere optredens plaats.
Ook live mee te maken: Q&A’s met muzikanten én de inmiddels beruchte Downbeat Blindfold Test door Dan Oue-lette. De Amerikaanse muziekjournalist van het bekende jazztijdschrift Down-beat test daarbij musici op hun muziek-kennis. Dit jaar ontvangt hij daarvoor James Carter, terwijl onder meer Tigran Hamasyan en Jacob Jazz Fred Odyssey zich onderwerpen aan Ouelette’s Q&A-sessies. Tenslotte zijn er in het NRC JazzCafé clinics en workshops van optredende acts, waaronder Omar Hakim en Gretchen Parlato.
NORTH SEA JAZZ OP RADIO, TELEVISIE EN ONLINEDe NTR is ook dit jaar mediapartner van North Sea Jazz, en verzorgt op verschillende kanalen en zenders uitzendingen vanuit Ahoy.
Radio 6 Soul & Jazz, radio6.nl en 3FM zenden live uit vanaf het festival. Daar-naast is Cultura24, het digitale Kunst & Cultuurkanaal van de Publieke Omroep, vertegenwoordigd en zendt de NTR tra-ditiegetrouw beelden van North Sea Jazz uit op Nederland 3.

Al voordat het ‘grote’ festival losbarst kunnen kinderen genieten van North Sea Jazz Kids in Ahoy. Op zondag 1 juli zit het programma boordevol muziek, dans, tekenen, improvisatie en vooral plezier.
MuZIEKTHEATERH van Adem is een voorstelling van Oorkaan, een van Nederlands meest toonaangevende productiehuizen van muziektheater voor kin-deren. Het stuk bevat bijzondere teksten van schrijfster Joke van Leeuwen. Zangeres/ac-trice Esra Delfidan en haar band Fidan zorgen voor eigenzinnige jazzmuziek vol Turkse in-vloeden. Want dat is het idee achter de voor-stelling: wat breng je mee als je twee landen hebt? Uit het eerste land ken je liedjes die je gedachteloos zingt en woorden die je al goed kon uitspreken toen je nog klein was. In het tweede land vind je nieuwe klanken waar je eerst je tong op brak, én nieuwe liedjes die al snel vertrouwd raakten. Want muziek is ook zonder woorden verstaanbaar. Houd je oren en ogen open voor het wonderlijke verschil!
JuNglE by NIgHT De muzikanten van Jungle by Night geven een workshop waarvoor kinderen tot en met 10 jaar met een instrument zich van tevoren kunnen inschrijven. Het resultaat wordt op-gevoerd tijdens North Sea Jazz Kids, sámen
met Jungle by Night. Meedoen? Stuur een mailtje met je naam en leeftijd naar [email protected] en vermeld daarin welk instru-ment je bespeelt. Vergeet dat trouwens niet mee te nemen op de dag zelf ! Ruim 200 concerten, tentoonstellingen, masterclasses, lezingen, jam-sessies, straatoptredens en afterparty’s, verdeeld over twee weken: dat is North Sea Round Town. De aftrap vindt plaats op vrijdag 22 juni tijdens de Jazzdag, hét netwerkevenement van jazzminnend Neder-land. Aanstormende nationale jazztalenten presenteren zich tijdens 24 showcases op de Kop van Zuid. Nog meer talent ontmoet u bij de Dutch Jazz Competition. Finalisten van dit jazzconcours strijden in LantarenVenster om de titels ‘Beste Groep’ en ‘Beste Solist’. De winnaar ziet u terug in Ahoy.
Van huiskamers tot metrostations North Sea Round Town brengt u op de meest bijzondere plekken van Rotterdam langs (vaak gratis) concerten. Alles staat in het teken van bijzondere ontmoetingen. Van Oud-Charlois tot de multicultu-rele West-Kruiskade en van uw eigen huiskamer tot musea, café’s en metrostations. Kwamen vorig jaar jazzklanken uit Kaapverdië u tegemoet, dit jaar krijgt het festival een Surinaams tintje. Ook aan de jongste bezoekers wordt gedacht. In het NAi zijn hoogtepunten uit het verleden, maar ook plannen voor de toekomst te bewonde-ren. In de Schatkamer, ontworpen door Rem Koolhaas, presenteert het NAi de juweeltjes uit de col-lectie. Hier is werk van onder meer Cuypers, Berlage en Riet-veld te zien. Naast het NAi ligt Museumwo-ning Sonneveld, ontworpen door de architecten Brinkman en Van der Vlugt en ingericht met Gis-pen meubels. Hier zijn gratis au-diotours beschikbaar.

KORTiNg Op ARNE QUiNZE iN DE KUNSTHAlDeze zomer toont de Kunsthal de tentoonstelling My Secret Gar-den van de Belgische kunstenaar Arne Quinze. De internationaal werkende Quinze maakt groot-schalige publieke installaties en sculpturen. Zijn werken zijn vaak opgebouwd uit verschil-lende houtsoorten waaronder afvalhout. My Secret Garden is zijn eerste binnenproject op grote schaal. Speciaal voor deze instal-latie introduceert Quinze licht- en geluidscomposities gemaakt door het duo Danny Mommens en Els Pynnoo.
N.B.: Bezoekers kunnen de kun-stenaar, tijdens de opbouw van de installatie en tentoonstelling van 25 mei tot en met 7 juni, in de Kunst-hal van dichtbij volgen. Daarnaast is Quinze, tijdens de voorbereiding en realisatie, te zien via live stream.

Een pluskaart geldt alleen voor het plusconcert, en vormt geen toegangsbewijs voor het festival.

2012’s Lineup is shaping up nicely so far. Headliner Santana will close off the first night, on which there will also be perfor-mances by Rubén Blades, Jill Scott, Sergio George’s All Star Salsa Friends, Buika, Caro Emerald and Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band lead by Paquito D’Rivera. On Saturday September 1, they will be followed by such acts as Maná, Randy Crawford & Joe Sample Trio, Waylon, Paquito D’Rivera Septet, India.Arie and Joshua Redman with Aaron Parks, Matt Penman and Eric Harland: James Farm.

Rotterdam is ready for North Sea Jazz 2012. As in previous years, on July 6, 7 and 8 Ahoy will be turned into the biggest in-door music spectacle in the world. This will be the city’s 7th edition, and the fes-tival’s 37th.
The variety of names on the bill, such as John Hiatt, Van Morrison, Pat Metheny, Kurt Elling, Tony Bennett, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, Esperanza Spalding, Hugh Laurie and d’Angelo, proves that North Sea Jazz, as always, offers something for everyone. Following the un-precedented night concerts by Prince last year, Lenny Kravitz will close Friday’s lineup with a performance lasting until the wee hours. Also, Joshua Redman, being this year’s Artist In Resi-dence, will perform all weekend with several different projects.
North Sea Jazz is known globally as the event where the past, present and future of jazz are featured within three days. Next to a firm base of jazz many genres will pass by, such as blues, soul, funk, hip-hop, world, pop and much more.
HIStoRYThe North Sea Jazz festival started in 1976 in The Hague with three hundred performing artists divided over six halls. The first edition attracted nine thousand visitors, who enjoyed performances by legendary musicians like Sarah Vaughn, Count Basie, Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie. In 2006, the festival moved to its current, big-ger, location in Rotterdam. This year, the or-ganisation is expecting more than a thousand
musicians, spread out over 150 performances and thirteen different stages. Though the numbers of visitors were between 65.000 and 70.000 in recent years, the festival still man-ages to retain its intimate character.
EAt, dRINk, SHoP Apart from world class music, North Sea Jazz also offers quality in food and drinks. You can find anything from Thai curries to Italian pizzas and from beers to tropical cocktails at the various food stands. To pay for food and drinks you’ll need special tokens, which can be bought at the desk in the entrance hall and at token machines (payable by cash card). At the end of the festival, unused tokens may be returned for a refund at the desk near the exit. Shopping for records, books, magazines, musi-cal instruments and much more can be done at stands found at different locations. Original North Sea Jazz items such as T-shirts and post-ers are for sale at several merchandise stands.
2012: GLobAL CoLLAboRAtIoNSThis year’s festival will get an even more in-ternational feel. In light of the central theme Jazz In The Third Space, the organisation accentuates the fact that nowadays, the jazz scene sees an increasing amount of collabora-tions surpassing borders and even continents. Enjoy, for instance, the performance by the Metropole Orkest, for which conductor Vince Mendoza wrote the piece Nights On Earth to-gether with musicians from all over the world. In Terri Lyne Carrington’s Mosaic Project we will see Dutchwoman Tineke Postma. Ameri-cans Rez Abassi, Tigran Hamasyan and Vijay Iyer are inspired by their roots that lay far away and Oumou Sangaré & Bela Fleck musi-cally unite the US and Africa. There are many more examples of this globalisation of music, and jazz especially. Let yourself be surprised at North Sea Jazz 2012!
NoRtH SEA RoUNd toWNCome and explore a musical Rotterdam! The seventh edition of North Sea Round Town, the official warm-up to the festival, will take place from Friday June 22 until Sunday July 8.
In two weeks, over 200 concerts, exhibitions, masterclasses, speeches, jam sessions, street performances and afterparties will be held. The kick-off is called Jazz Day, a networking event for jazz lovers and professionals. New jazz talents will present themselves during twenty-four showcases at the Kop van Zuid.

HIGHLIGHTS FRIDAY JULY 6JAZZ IN THE THIRD SPACE The jazz scene is becoming more and more international. Today, the digital revolution allows people to make new contacts and re-tain them easily, anywhere in the world, and music fi les can be shared over great distances. Musicians are also increasingly citizens of the world who travel a lot, and work – or even live – in several different countries. Bands are formed with members from various nation-alities, each with their own roots, so that the sound of jazz is changing. We can see examples of this throughout the entire program. Take, for instance, the Metro-pole Orkest: conductor Vince Mendoza wrote Nights On Earth with musicians from all over the world. The piece is not only performed by American musicians like John Scofi eld and Joe Lovano, but also by Vietnamese-French guitarist Nguyen Le and Brazilian-Dutch vo-calist Lilian Vieira. New Yorker Dafnis Prieto energizes his audience with complex rhythms from his homeland of Cuba and a dizzying style of drumming. His Proverb Trio performs a chal-lenging combination of jazz, street poetry and improvisation.
GATEWAY TO THE ORIENT On the Yenisei stage too, the theme of the program is the advance of internationaliza-tion. The New York Times referred to Syrianclarinetist Kinan Azmeh as ‘a virtuoso’. He will be performing at the festival with Sri Lankan pianist Dinuk Wijeratne and Dutch trumpeter Eric Vloeimans.
The 400-year-old cultural exchange between Turkey and the Netherlands is highlighted by the performances of Dhafer Youssef & Hüsnü Senlendirici Group and Ogüz Buyukberber. A progressive Turkish bass clarinetist, Buyuk-berber found kindred spirits in the Russian Simon Nabatov and Dutchmen Tobias Klein and Wolter Wierbos. This exchange was made possible by the Istanbul Jazz Festival.
CLEAN FEED RECORDSThe ambitious Portuguese label Clean Feed is celebrating its tenth anniversary. The label releases the music of leading American impro-visers as well as major European musicians. The Village Voice put it well: “With its grow-ing catalog of fearless improvisers – Ameri-can and European, established and emerg-ing – Clean Feed isn’t merely documenting this era in jazz, but helping to shape it.” The New York Times adds: “So it should not be altogether shocking that one of the most vi-brant record companies on the scene is based in Lisbon.”Tonight on the Volga stage you can see Ameri-can pianist Angelica Sanchez with French guitarist Marc Ducret and others. Pianist Kris Davis comes from Canada and German saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock plays in the trio of American drummer Tom Rainey.
NEW URBAN JAZZThis evening, Darling is the venue for a new group of artists from big American cities like New York and Los Angeles. This new genera-tion of jazz musicians has studied jazz history thoroughly and has added to it fi fty years of soul, R&B and hip-hop. Gregory Porter, with his warm voice inspired by singers like Nat King Cole and Donny Hathaway. Singer Jose
James effortlessly switches from John Coltrane to Flying Lotus, and the Robert Glasper Ex-periment creates a new musical omniverse based on jazz, hip-hop, R&B and rock.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: JOSHUA REDMAN Redman is one of the new icons of jazz. To-gether with contemporaries like Branford Marsalis and Roy Hargrove, he was at the vanguard of acoustic jazz in the mid-90s. With one foot fi rmly grounded in the bebop tradi-tion and the other facing the future, searching for a new sound. He experimented with unu-sual lineups. His fi rst quartet included future greats Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade. Redman is an audience favorite: a virtuoso on the sax with a strong stage personality. He always puts one hundred percent of himself into his performances and regularly surprises listeners with the new directions he takes. Redman will be performing several of his new projects at the festival. Today, he is featuring with the Metropole Orkest and will be partici-pating in a Q&A session at the NRC Jazz Café.
LENNY KRAVITZ Friday ends with a Lenny Kravitz night con-cert, as a follow-up to the breathtaking perfor-mances by Prince last year. On his latest album Black & White America, the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist returns to the mu-sic that has infl uenced him since his youth, including R&B, gospel, blues and jazz. De-spite a number of big rock hits, his music has always been soulful. Young, high-fl ying jazz musicians have regularly played a prominent role in his bands, including Trombone Shorty with his roots in the New Orleans brass tradi-tion, and earlier, drummer Cindy Blackman.

JAZZ IN THE THIRD SPACE There is more behind the globalization of the jazz fraternity than digitization alone; emi-grants and their successive generations pro-vide for a mix of infl uences. Tonight you can see a few interesting examples of this. Rez Abassi grew up in the USA but he incor-porates the music of his native Pakistan into his compositions and playing. In recent years, award-winning jazz pianist Vijay Iyer, together with kindred spirits like Abassi and Rudresh Mahanthappa, has been exploring how to give classical Indian music a place in his works. Tonight, Iyler is performing with his own trio. Miles Okazaki is an American with Japanese roots, who blends Asian music and philosophy with contemporary composed and improvised jazz. New Yorker Tigran Hamasyan colors his music with tones from his Armenian roots. With his Hybrid 10tet, Michiel Braam brings together top musicians from three different musical and geographic zones. Dutchman Bart Wirtz and Belgian Robin Verheyen both went to New York to measure themselves against current leading jazz musicians. They are each presenting their bands at the North Sea Jazz Festival this year.
DUTCH SUCCESSSpeaking of the Netherlands: our local jazz artists are doing extremely well at home and abroad. Yuri Honing is a proud winner of the Boy Edgar Award. Wolfert Brederode is
the very fi rst Dutchman to be signed by the famous ECM label. He recently released his second album with a fabulous international lineup. Tin Men & The Telephone are defi nitely worth a mention. The band has created a highly individual musical concept by com-bining jazz, images and ringtones into a very entertaining show. These days, we regard Cu-ban pianist Ramón Valle as a Dutchman. He recorded a beautiful album with Jesse van Rul-ler; it is high time to place this group among the current big names in jazz in Hudson.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: JOSHUA REDMAN Tonight, Joshua Redman is giving two special performances in which he proves his versa-tility as a saxophonist. First, we have James Farm, an acoustic quartet formed in 2009 with Aaron Parks, Matt Penman and Eric Harland, performing for the fi rst time at the North Sea Jazz Festival. All the musicians play an equally important role. Each one has his own rec-ognizable style of composing but due to the tightness of the band they create a sound that is unmistakably their own. Tonight, the Joshua Redman Sax Quartet will be performing in the Netherlands for the fi rst time ever. Redman wrote this music especially for the lineup with whom he will be playing at this concert: Chris Cheek, Chris Potter and Mark Turner.
NEW FUSION After years of ‘radio silence’, today there are young fusion musicians who, in the tradition of their predecessors, blend jazz with rock but have added electronic music to the mix. They
are searching for new formats in fusion and this has resulted in a fresh, new sound. To-night at the Darling stage you can hear exam-ples of this in the music of Yuri Honing Wired Paradise, Christian Scott, Rudder and others. RAMBLING BLUESThe Congo stage is the venue for a special program with a large dose of ‘archaeology’. The music of the Heritage Blues Orchestra is a lesson in blues history given by a trans-Atlantic lineup. The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey plays a suite that incorporates America’s past. The other two artists themselves embody a rich history. Souldiva Betty Wright, who is ap-proaching the age of sixty, recorded her new album with The Roots. And, after a long ab-sence, blues legend Taj Mahal is fi nally back in the Netherlands.
SPECIAL PROJECTS Hugh Laurie, well-known for playing the title role in the TV drama series House, M.D., is performing in Amazon. Laurie is a man of many talents: apart from acting, he also sings and plays several instruments. Last year, he re-leased his fi rst album Let Them Talk, produced by John Henry and inspired by New Orleans blues. Allen Toussaint wrote the wind instru-ment arrangements. Singer Rufus Wainwright made his new album Out Of The Game with top producer Mark Ronson. And, with his Unity Band, Pat Me-theny has surrounded himself with top fl ight musicians like Chris Potter, the promising, un-conventional young bassist Ben Williams, and top drummer Antonio Sanchez.

JAZZ IN THE THIRD SPACE Tonight you can once again see wonderful international formations at the North Sea Jazz Festival, including Japanese pianist Hiromi who will be playing with Americans Anthony Jackson and Simon Philips. The combination of Oumou Sangare & BélaFleck goes further than jazz and crosses over into world music. Sangare is one of Africa’s greatest singers (from Mali) and Fleck, a highly-acclaimed American jazz banjoist, is known from his group The Flecktones. The Dutch Surinam Music Ensemble is performing with former Headhunter Bennie Maupin (US). Take Five: Europe is also something special: an artistic development program for emerging jazz musicians supported by the EU Culture Program. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: JOSHUA REDMANFor his last project of the festival, Redman has chosen to be accompanied by leading musi-cians. In Hudson, this year’s Artist In Resi-
dence will give a concert with the jazz trio The Bad Plus with Ethan Iverson on piano. The group’s music is inspired by infl uences from their youth (mainly rock). The Bad Plus have grown into a true audience favorite and in combination with Joshua Redman the con-cert promises to be exciting and energetic.
JAZZ CLASSICS Tonight you can enjoy a wealth of true jazz veterans: Tony Bennett and the Wayne Short-er Quartet in Amazon, and Monty Alexander in Hudson. In Madeira, virtually the entire evening’s program is fi lled by old hands in-cluding Jim Hall, Benny Golson and Archie Shepp. Before they take to the stage you can see David Kweksilber, a younger, progressive musician who has, however, also been infl u-enced by swing.
YOUNG TALENTBernhoft and Lianne La Havas, both playing in Mississippi, are promising new talents at the interface of soul and singer-songwriter. La Havas, who is from the UK, sings intimate, moving numbers and accompanies herself on guitar. Bernhoft makes loops of his own vocals, bass and drum lines and then sings over them while playing guitar. It makes for
a unique sound that is completely his own, which has made him a phenomenon in his na-tive Norway. Both musicians are huge talents from whom much is expected.
SPECIAL PROJECTS Following up last year’s Tribute To Miles, this year the North Sea Jazz Festival is again pay-ing tribute to Miles Davis, this time with the title Miles Smiles. The musicians, Kenny Gar-rett, Robben Ford, Joey DeFrancesco, Darryl Jones and Omar Hakim, were all at one time members of bands of the great Miles Davis. He named trumpeter Wallace Roney as his successor. Roney had the privilege of study-ing with the master from 1985 until his death. And fi nally: he’s back! D’Angelo is dropping in at Nile this evening. Following his legendary performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2000 (his fi rst concert in the Netherlands) this musical prodigy literally disappeared from the stage. In the intervening years only slivers of his music appeared sporadically online. PAUL ACKET AWARD The winner of the Paul Acket Award 2012 is pianist Craig Taborn. Every year, the award is presented to an artist deserving wider recognition for their extraordinary musicianship.
With this prize, the North Sea Jazz organisa-tion want to highlight talented jazz musicians at the beginning of their career, known within the jazz scene, but not yet recognized by a wide audience.
Craig Taborn is an American pianist and composer who started his career in the 1990s. He plays in a broad context, ranging from straight-ahead jazz to far beyond and playing with young jazz musicians and established veterans as well as techno producers. Last year,he released the solo piano album Avenging Angel on the famed ECM label. At the festi-val, Craig Taborn will play with PRISM, also featuring Dave Holland, Kevin Eubanks and Eric Harland, on Saturday July 7. That same night, he will play a solo performance and will also receive his award.
JAZZ21 - ARTIST OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM BY IJFOThe International Jazz Festival Organi-zation (IJFO) has launched a new talent support program, which is designed to actively promote and support the artist development of up-and-coming jazz mu-sicians and performers. The IJFO, consisting of 17 of the largest jazz festivals in Europe and North America, ex-plains the initiative as follows: “The music industry has endured great shifts over the past decade and is still on unstable ground. Substantial amounts of artists have resorted to promoting themselves through the internet and other DIY avenues. As a result, there has been an across-the-board decrease in promo-tion and overall increased diffi culty in linking new talent with new audiences.”
The organization feels that jazz needs to de-velop a new generation of iconic musicians that younger and forthcoming generations of fans can relate to. Younger jazz musicians can certainly make a name for themselves, and have, as exemplifi ed by artists such as Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau in the 1990s. But the IJFO now feels the need to bring attention to the musicians that follow in their footsteps.
Therefore, they will follow and foster six new talents over a period of three years. This involvement will entail having the artists perform at IJFO festivals, awarding them promotional opportunities through special programming and media outreach, as well as helping them increase their following by bringing them back for “encore” perfor-mances in consecutive years.
The fi rst group of musicians to engage in this support program are: Ambrose Akinmusire (USA), Stefano Bollani (Italy), Mathias Eick (Norway), Tigran Hama-syan (USA), Gretchen Parlato (USA) and Phronesis (UK).
MCNCOMPOSITION ASSIGNMENTEach year, the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Dutch Music Centre (MCN) commission a promising Dutch jazz composer to write a free composition. This year, the honor goes to guitarist Bram Stadhouders.
Bram Stadhouders (1987, Tilburg) is is the youngest ever musician to be commissioned the MCN Composition assignment. He is considered one of the most interesting and emerging improvising European musicians.
In 2011, he performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival with Terje Isungset, playing a guitar made of ice. That same year, he was selected to participate in the Take Five: Europe program.
The MCN Composition assignment is commissioned in collaboration with the Fund for the Performing Arts.

ART POSTER COMPETITIONThe winner of this year’s art poster com-petition is Denise Nuijen. Her design will be on sale at the festival, both as a silk-screen print and on T-shirts.
North Sea Jazz’s art poster competition is organized every year amongst students of Rotterdam’s Willem de Kooning Academy. The jury praised Denise Nuijen’s design for the way in which typography and colours united and showed a cacaphony of sounds that can also be experienced at the festival.

Interaction is the key word at the annual art show at the festival. Not only will Thea Gerritsen, German painter Alfred Gockel, Mexican painter Jazzamoart and Dutch art collective Venour exhibit their work at the Madeira foyer on the third fl oor, but the last three will also paint live to music at Congo Square.
Music photographers such as Rob Verhorst, Peter van Breukelen and Joke Schot will pre-sent their best pictures around the ‘Interac-tion’ theme at the Fast Lane, on the fi rst fl oor. There, Andreas Terlaak, Paul Bergen en Geert
van Kesteren will also show photos they made at foreign editions of North Sea Jazz.
In Mekong, on the fourth fl oor, Music In-spired Art will host an exhibition with the design students of Rotterdam’s Willem de Kooning Art Academy entered for the annual Art poster competition.

TAKE FIVE: EUROPE
After the success of seven British editions, there’s Take Five: Europe. Designed by in-ternational music producer Serious (UK), the program’s goal is to give a number of Europe’s most talented and upcoming jazz musicians the opportunity to further develop their skills.
The fi rst edition of this European master-class will run from August 2011 to July 2012. A committee of jazz industry experts selected two musicians per country from France, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and the UK. The Dutch selectees are violinist Oene van Geel and guitarist Bram Stadhouders.
Participating artists get the unique possibility to discuss, explore and strengthen all aspects of their future career, both musical and busi-ness related, during a residency in the British countryside. Also, the musicians get the op-portunity to play at important festivals and stages all around Europe and are encouraged to collaborate with each other.
The project is made possible with the support of the European Commission and various partners all over the continent. Music Cen-tre The Netherlands (MCN) and the North Sea Jazz festival are the Dutch partners of the program. MusicXport, MCN’s program for improving the position of Dutch musicians abroad and increasing export possibilities, also contributes to Take Five: Europe.
