North Shore United Methodist Church
213 Hazel Avenue
Glencoe, Illinois
Selected History
The North Shore Methodist Episcopal Church congregation was founded by a
small group of families in 1909, with services conducted for several years in the
former Glencoe Library at 654 Hazel Avenue, across the street from the current
church property. The sanctuary wing, designed by Riddle and Riddle Architects in
a Tudor style, was constructed in 1914‐1915 at the northeast corner of Hazel and
Greenleaf Avenues. In 1946, the house and property immediately north of the
church was donated by the Fox family, giving the church a six‐bedroom
“Parsonage” for the church’s minister and his/her family to reside in. The
education wing first floor was built between the Parsonage and the sanctuary in
1948, comprised of classrooms and offices. In 1964, a second floor was added to
the education wing, incorporating a larger informal gathering space, a larger
kitchen to replace the original kitchen in the sanctuary wing, and additional
classrooms.
The legacy oak tree
located immediately
west of the sanctuary
wing was already a
formidable presence
when the April 15,
1914 groundbreaking
for the sanctuary wing
occurred, an event
(and tree) documented
in the photograph on
the right. This oak has
continued to shelter the sanctuary and Greenleaf entry courtyard, now for over
100 years, giving it the distinction of being one of the oldest trees in Glencoe.
When the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged
in 1968, the Glencoe church became the North Shore United Methodist Church, a
designation which remains to this day.

The first minister appointed to the newly‐formed congregation was Stuart B. Edmonson, who served for a brief period in 1909. Unfortunately, the church has no photograph of Reverend Edmonson in its archives.
