 Principal’s Message 

  Mr Terry Griffiths 

I am delighted that the Year 12 Year Book has been rejuvenated 

this year. Congratula ons to all those who have contributed to 

its produc on. 

The Year 12 cohort for 2013 has been an outstanding group and 

has truly upheld the great tradi ons of Asquith Boys High 

School. They have had huge involvement in extra‐ curricular ac‐

vi es across a wide range of ac vi es, including leadership, 

ci zenship, sports and the crea ve arts. I have been impressed 

by their friendly demeanour, personal resilience, community 

spirit and level of maturity. Of par cular note has been their 

willingness to engage and help with younger boys at school in 

programs such as Peer Tutoring, Leadership Day and Transi on. 

I wish all Year 12 the very best for the HSC and their future ca‐

reers. I look forward to hearing of their ongoing success.

 Deputy Principals Message 

 Mr Andrew Skehan 

Even though I have only worked with you for three terms, I have come to appreciate the di‐

versity of talent that you possess both individually and collec vely. Throughout this year, I 

have had the pleasure of witnessing this on a number of occasions. 

The TAS/Crea ve Arts major works were of an excellent quality this year and it was terrific 

to see the passion and dedica on you showed in the crea ve process. Ge ng the chance 

to discuss this with many of you at the art show just prior to the submission of works was a 

great experience. A ending the Extension 2 English Soiree in late Term 3 was another high‐

light, where the hard work and crea vity of the students involved was showcased alongside 

students in the same course from Asquith Girls HS. I was similarly able to watch a number 

of grade sport fixtures where many of you displayed great skill, sportsmanship and school 

spirit. Having the chance to teach an HSC Economics class this year meant that I was able to 

get to know a small number of you quite well and gain an apprecia on of how life is for a Yr 

12 student at our school. Teaching this class was very enjoyable, and I would like to thank 

all the members of the group for their good humour and engagement with the issues we 

covered.  I encourage all of you to be very proud of your educa on at Asquith Boys HS. Now 

more than ever, your choices have real consequences, which is one of the more important 

things we try to teach.

It has been an honour and a pleasure to have been your Year Advisor over the years. During this  me you have matured into responsible, ethical and well rounded young men. Furthermore, you have done it with a big smile on your 

face, a good sense of humour and in your own individual way!  

In the years to come I hope you will look back at your  me at Asquith Boys High School as some of the best years of your life. I certainly know that I do!  

This place has given you so much; an educa on, a place to be around your friends and develop new ones, leadership opportuni es, somewhere to develop 

your ability and excel in Sport, Music, Design and Technology and the Arts. Above all, Asquith Boys has enabled you to be the person you are today and equipped you with the skills in order to succeed at anything you aspire to! 

One important thing to appreciate is that your learning will definitely not stop here. Be open to opportuni es, be posi ve and never give up! I wish you all the best in your future endeavours and know that each of you will succeed in your 

own individual way!

School Captain’s Message

It’s been an awesome 6 years, and we have had some great  mes. The high school journey that we have taken from year 7 has been full of memories, which I will treasure forever. I wish everyone all the best for the future, and thank you to each and every one of you for making these years some of the greatest  mes 

of my life.   Asquith honestly is a great school which I am proud to have been a part of, and I look forward to 

catching up with everyone in the future as old boys of Asquith. Fellas you truly are a top bunch of blokes and it has been an honour to represent you as school captain, 

and I appreciate the support I have received along the way.

Hey Fellas You guys are all top blokes with great a tudes to‐

wards life which I will remember for many years. It has been a 

great 6 years with many fond memories. I wish you guys all the 

best with your future and hope everyone keeps in touch.  

Asquith Boys High School is a pre y cool place. I may complain about it a lot, but I think that any school 

that can take the group of lazy and layabout students that I knew most of you as in Year 7, and turn them 

into a group of students who I proudly call my friends, has got to have something pre y cool going for it. I 

therefore implore all you to remember your  mes at this school fondly and to con nue working with the 

degree of for tude and drive that I know Asquith Boys has ins lled within me. To all of you, have a great 

life and may the Force be with you all.

This year I have taken over the roll as Prefect Coordinator from Cameron Laing, 

who has been coordina ng the Prefects for six years. 

I was lucky enough to have been given a great group of friendly, mature leaders 

for my first year of duty, led by School Captain – Bre  Riley, School Vice‐Captain 

– Timothy Buwalda and Senior Prefect – Aus n Carey. 

Since taking on the Prefect Coordinator posi on, I have developed strong rela‐

onships with all of the prefect body and have come to recognize each of the 

individual personali es within the group (some more eccentric than others). 

The year 12 Prefects of 2013 have all established and displayed excep onal 

leadership skills and have enthusias cally dedicated numerous hours and days 

out of their own  me to represent Asquith Boys High School at events such as 

Remembrance Day Ceremonies, Anzac Day Services, Open Nights and many 

other in and out of School func ons. 

It is these personali es and a ributes that create prosperous ci zens in the 

world. 

I wish every success for all of Year 12 for the future and in par cular the Year 12 

Prefect Cohort. I have confidence that you will all con nue to u lize your lead‐

ership skills to endeavour a successful future for yourself in which ever path you 

choose to take in life.

Well it’s about that  me that we bid you farewell. In the short  me that most of the Maths 

staff has been at ABHS we have come to grow fond of the characters in Year 12.  Many con‐

versa ons have taken place in the staffroom regarding such things as work ethic, a tude, 

sense of humour, integrity and when is Tim Buwalda going to grit his teeth and take a bite 

out of his Maths work.  As Head Teacher of Year 12 it has also been a pleasure to see some 

of you work very hard to achieve your best. You have given me plenty of headaches, but as 

boys go, you’re pre y good. I only have two pieces of advice for you in your future endeav‐

ours: (1) Please don’t ever again men on anything involving Alex Whitney and (2) If you fail 

to prepare, then prepare to fail.

Mathematics Department

I first met this cohort of boys in 2011 when they were in Year 10 and realised what a broad 

range of interests and skills the processed. The thing that struck me was how sporty they 

were but intermixed in the matrix were some real characters flourishing in the arts, music 

and technology fields. The fact that Aus n managed to read about 10 novels in my Science 

lessons was quite an achievement. Of all the boys who went on to do a science in their sen‐

ior years, one stood head and shoulders above the rest. Tom Tuynman not only had to duck 

on his way through the door but managed top Physics and fix most of my computer prob‐

lems in record  me. I can’t speak highly enough of the boys who did so well in Science at 

the HSC level. Alex and Sam in Biology. Tom, Jack and Marcus in Chemistry. Cameron, Sam 

and Mikelis in Senior Science. But more importantly all of the boys who had a go will leave 

the school with the skills to cope in the real world. Well done boys and best of luck for 

whatever the future brings.

I most remember when the problems that they have had with their TAS teachers, as that is 

what I see most in my role as HT and it must be said that there have not really been a lot of 

them. There have been N award warnings to sign, a ernoon deten ons to write and yellow 

books to monitor, but on the whole, a lot less than most other years. On the whole, yr 12 of 

2013 are a good bunch of guys. 

 

The Yr 12’s may remember me as their yr 7 & 8 technology teacher who did rockets with 

them. I hope they remember me fondly. 

 

I have two mo os. They are based on the observa ons I have made over 27 years of teach‐

ing that no one else will make things happen for you and the opportuni es that you have 

now, may never come your way again.  

The Bri sh SAS have as their mo o, “Who Dares Wins”. This is so true but remember that 

some mes you loose as well, but if you don’t dare you aren’t going to win. My other mo o 

is “Carpe Diem”, which roughly translates from La n as, “Seize the Day”. Whether you are 

chasing a job or a poten al a rac ve partner, both mo os apply. 

 

The most memorable moment was hearing Ms Holder sing the praises of her Art class. I 

thought she was exaggera ng …… un l I saw 

their work. Just amazing!

cause I like the confidence they show in the 

shot. It was taken during the Walkathon. 

They saw me with the camera and instantly 

struck this pose. I love it!

In the history of ABHS since 2001,  2013 

was the year of the biggest Visual Arts 

class. 

It was also filled with…… 

Big ideas 

Big bodies of Work across the forms of 

photography, drawing, pain ng, printmaking and film. 

Facebook and Instagram for all. 

A facebook page dedicated to whinging to one another about the fact that I had the hide to expect 

you to work. 

Big mess – you messed up every room in G block except drama and 

music! 

Big noise from a very social group. 

Big debates  

Big commitment 

Big blonde hair – he was here some mes. 

Some very big egos. 

Big fun. 

Big absences for a few. 

Big laughter – we have laughed A LOT. 

Big anger – yep, I have had my moments. So have we all. 

Big excuses received frequently from a 

couple of you. 

Big frustra on and fear when things got 

hard. I felt it mul plied x 19!

This has not been too difficult an experience. I have been really pleased 

to have been a part of  the  in‐

tellectual and posi ve develop‐

ment  of  so many  of  you  over 

the  past  six  years.  Indeed, 

there are not many of you that 

I  have  not  personally  taught, 

coached  as  sports  coach,  trav‐

elled  overseas with  or worked 

with in legacy collec ons, com‐

munity  days  or  k‐12  programs with  local  schools.  I  have  always  had 

great pride in being associated with Asquith Boys. That pride generates 

into minds of students and  they  too  leave  this  school  sa sfied.  It has 

provided them with the best possible educa on. It is raised their expec‐

ta ons and esteem. It has brought forth ambi ons and achieves for the 

future.  

Boys remember your days at Asquith Boys High School with great fond‐
