Discover the heady, indulgent days of New York’s Long Island during the glamorous 1920s as Northern Ballet brings F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby to the stage.
Nick Carraway comes to know his infamous neighbour Jay Gatsby – a mysterious millionaire with a secret past and a penchant for lavish parties and beautiful women. As the sparkling façade of Gatsby’s world begins to slip, Carraway comes to see the loneliness, obsession and tragedy that lies beneath.
The seductive style of the era is recreated through stunning sets and costumes. Music by Academy Award nominated and BAFTA winning composer Sir Richard Rodney Bennett CBE (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Murder on the Orient Express), will be played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
With an unparalleled reputation for telling stories through dance, Northern Ballet is the perfect company to translate this popular American novel into ballet. As The Great Gatsby steps into the spotlight, don’t miss your opportunity to see what promises to be one of the most stylish adaptations of this classic work.

Ugly Duckling is our first ballet especially for children and is the perfect opportunity to introduce your little ones to the magic of live ballet, music and theatre.
A poor duckling is lonely and fed-up, shunned by those around her who see her as too ugly to fit in. She tries to make friends with fellow ducklings as well as with frogs, cats and even a fox, but realising she is not like any of these animals, she is left sad and alone. Follow the duckling on her journey as she overcomes her troubles and turns into a beautiful swan, beginning a happy new life.
Our first performances of Ugly Duckling in Leeds were a sell-out success, so don’t miss the opportunity to see this adorable production this spring.
These child friendly performances are just 45 minutes long.

Dance takes centre stage as Europe meets America in Northern Ballet’s Mixed Programme for 2013.
Dutch dance master Hans Van Manen has created more than 100 short classical ballets during his illustrious 60 year career with, amongst many others, Nederlands Dans Theater and the Dutch National Ballet. Northern Ballet dancers will be performing Van Manen’s Concertante, a classical ballet inspired by and set to Frank Martin’s Petite Symphonie Concertante.
We dare you not to be moved by the breathtaking Angels in the Architecture which makes a welcome return to Northern Ballet’s programme. Created by the American choreographer Mark Godden and danced to Aaron Copland’s beautiful Appalachian Spring, it is based on the lives of the Shaker people.
Kenneth Tindall’s star is on the rise. The British dance maker, who is also a Premier Dancer with Northern Ballet, created his debut piece Project#1 for the 2011 Mixed Programme. It won the Bundesjungendballett Production Prize at the 26th Choreography Competition in Hanover. This much anticipated follow up is not to be missed.
You won’t see Northern Ballet perform this Mixed Programme anywhere else and the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre is the perfect space to enjoy the Company’s athletic and talented dancers.
