Where to Start When Planning Your Next ProjectJoin, long time restoration contractor, Peter Taggart, in this session to learn how to organize and plan your next renovation or restoration project. Proper planning and organization can help you manage costs, avoid surprises, and assure the long term value of your home is maintained. Bring your project ideas and information to explore specific questions you might have regarding your next home project.

Weatherization and Air Quality in HomesMainers are getting weatherization work done to improve the comfort and efficiency of their homes. Unfortunately, the air quality of many homes is severely compromised by weatherization without proper attention to the national air standards set by ASHRAE. This presentation focuses on the potential health hazards of weatherization without proper ventilation, presents methods of solving the ventilation problems, and shows how proper ventilation is determined.

DeWitt Kimball, Owner, Complete Home Evaluation Services, has worked in the building profession for over two decades and has extensive knowledge of the science of building construction. DeWitt is a certified HERS rater, a BPI energy analyst, and LEED Green rater.

Seeing Through the Layers – Using Historic Paint Analysis in the Restoration of BuildingsAmy Cole Ives and Scott Hanson of Sutherland Conservation & Consulting (SCC) will present on the uses of historic paint analysis in recreating historic finishes and dating changes to a building over time. In 2014, SCC established the first state-of-the-art historic paint analysis lab north of Boston in Augusta, Maine. Using cross-section microscopy to distinguish individual layers of paint and techniques to identify the specific pigments and binders used in each layer, SCC is able to analyze the history of decorative schemes used. Combining this information with a deep knowledge of the historic uses of paint and other finishes for interiors and exteriors, they are able to make specific recommendations for the recreation of historic finishes with appropriate materials. The presentation will include examples of their work, including the paint analysis work done for the dramatic and award-winning restoration of the elaborate Victorian decoration in the grand dining room of the Gerald Hotel in Fairfield.

Amy Cole Ives is President of Sutherland Conservation & Consulting (SCC), which she founded in 2007. She previously worked for the Maine Historic Preservation Commission as architectural historian and rehabilitation tax incentives coordinator; for the Historic New England Conservation Center as an architectural conservator; as a consultant to the Massachusetts Historical Commission; and as a paint analyst for Susan L. Buck at Historic Paint Services. Scott Hanson is an Architectural Historian with SCC and previously worked in the City of Portland’s historic preservation program. At SCC, he has researched and written numerous National Register nominations and Maine Historic Building Record documentation

projects and is the co-author of two books with Maine State Historian, Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., The Architecture of Cushing’s Island (2012), and Homes Down East, recently published by Tilbury House.

A Helpful Guide for Preservation Projects: Using the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Residential BuildingsMuch of the historic preservation world revolves around the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Since the earliest days of preservation as an organized movement, the “Secretary’s Standards” have been used as guiding principles by governments and communities, developers and building owners. While often associated with ordinances, tax credits and other legal and governmental processes, the Standards can be very valuable to historic homeowners to guide their restoration, preservation, and rehab efforts so that they “do it right” the first time. This presentation highlights several of the more often used Standards with examples and case studies.

Malcolm Collins is an architect specializing in historic preservation and master planning. He serves on the board of Greater Portland Landmarks and has overseen master planning for rehabilitation of facilities at the University of Maine, Orono and Pineland Farms.
