Merck Forest & Farmland Center has announced its line-up of fall outdoor education programs, which provide teachers with the opportunity to immerse their students in inquiry and place-based learning. Focus of the upcoming season is “The Ins and Outs of Eating and the Cycle of Nutrients on the farm.”

Grades Pre-K through four will learn about Merck’s horses, pigs, chickens and sheep. Through hands-on investigation, they will dis-cover how the animals’ bodies are well-suited for finding, picking and eating their favorite foods.

Middle school students in grades five through eight will trace the flow of nutrients on the farm as they cycle through Merck’s soils, plants and animals. They’ll also learn what makes the ani-mals unique in the way they and digest food, and discover the secrets of compost ecosystems.

High school students in grades nine through

12 will hike around the 60-acre farm, learning how soil, water and climate influence what the farm grows and which management practices are used. By exploring the concepts of rotational grazing, nutrient cycling and land stewardship, students will experience the working landscape first-hand.

Pre-K through grade eight programs run approximately 1.5 hours, while the high school programs run about three hours in length.

As Merck expands its educational programs and outreach to the community, tuition for these programs is donation-based. “The goal is to engage as many students as we can in this impor-tant, experiential and hands-on learning,” said Sarah Ullman, Merck’s director of education. She noted that Merck can also provide custom-made learning experiences by adapting the les-sons to teacher-defined objectives.
