The Northshire Hockey Association announces that it will offer free hockey instruc-tion for boys and girls ages six and under at Riley Rink during the 2012-2013 hockey season. This free pogram has been made possible by community support and generous funds received through the fundraiser March Money Madness and the Manchester Rotary Club.

“We’re very excited to have

the opportunity to offer this program next fall,” said Sharon Poddick, president of the NHA board. “Hockey is a great sport; our goal is to make it more accessible to those who would like to try.”

The free program will run from late October to March for approximately 15 weeks. Practices will take place once a week on a weekday to be deter-mined. NHA’s only required prerequisite for participation is that each prospective player be an independent skater and be able to glide on skates. The group encourages prospective players to take advantage of public ice time at Riley Rink.

NHA has limited numbers of equipment rental packages available for $30. Packages include all equipment needed by new players except for a hockey stick and skates. For more information about free instructions, equipment pack-ages or getting started in youth hockey, email the NHA at [email protected]. For more information about the Northshire Hockey Assocation, go to www.northshirehockey.org.

Starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, the main field will be filled with show vehi-cles. Starting at 1 p.m., the very popular tractor pulls will begin.

Food will be for sale at the Pavilion from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. “There’s an absolutely spectac-ular view from the Food Tent,” said Erenhouse. “You look over the entire show, with the moun-tains in the background.”

The car show also features live music and children’s activi-ties ongoing throughout the weekend. Free parking is avail-

able off-site, with a shuttle ser-vice delivering patrons to the field.

After the show closes at 5 p.m. on Saturday, many of the classic cars will drive into downtown Bennington for a “Cruise-in.” The cars will then congregate in the TD Bank parking lot. “It’s a nice way to integrate them into the local community,” Erenhouse com-mented.

On Sunday, the show contin-ues with all fields open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tractor pulls

begin at 10 a.m., and the awards ceremony takes place at 3 p.m.

The Bennington Car Show is presented by the Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce, the Bennington and Catamount Rotary Clubs, the Norshaft and Bennington Lions Clubs, the Green Mountain Antique Car Club, and the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 601.

For more information, call the Bennington Chamber at 802-447-3311 or visit www.BenningtonCarShow.com.

The festival also includes a reading of a new play by John Nassivera at the Dorset Playhouse at 2 p.m. on Saturday. For more information about the walk, call Ruth Stewart at 867-0331.

Geocaching will be ongoing throughout the weekend. For those unfamiliar with this activity, it is an international sensation that involves a treasure hunt for hidden items, using GPS coor-dinates to find clues.

“Some of the locations will be easy to find and others not so easy,” said Dorset Town Manager Rob Gaiotti. “Geocachers will find themselves in some of Dorset’s most beautiful areas, and those who find all the sites will win gift certificates from Dorset businesses.”

Hand-carved signs will be on display at the Regional Artists Gallery at the Bennington Museum through September 30, in a new exhibit entitled “Signs of the Times: Original Designs by Richard Kime.” The public will be able to meet Mr. Kime on Thursday, September 20 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., as he works on creative projects in the museum lobby.

Interested in art from an early age, Richard Kime graduated from Florida State University with a bachelors degree in Fine Art. After gradu-ation, he settled in Wilmington, VT where he has been self-employed as an artist and sign painter since 1972.

This exhibition features a selec-tion of hand-carved and painted low relief plaques executed in cherry and hard rock maple from 1973 to 1979, a sign commissioned for a local inn created in 1981, and some shadowbox painted wood col-lages.

In many ways, Kime’s work extends the tradi-tion of early 19th century American folk art, similar to the largely anonymous makers of tav-ern signs from that time period. He is currently engaged in the design and production of a line of ceramic cookware designs slip-cast from hand carved plaster molds. To learn more about the artist’s work, contact him at [email protected].

For more information about the museum or the exhibit, contact the Bennington Museum at 802-447-1571 or visit www.benningtonmuseum.org.

Dr. Ronald Stram of the Stram Center for Integrative Medicine will give a free public lec-ture, “Lyme Disease: Deciphering Fact from Fiction,” at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 13 at the Bennington Public Library Bank North Conference Room.

Bennington County has the highest inci-dence rate of confirmed and probable cases of Lyme Disease in Vermont. Health officials announced the number of cases from exposure to ticks is on the rise, with more than 600 reported in Vermont last year. “Tick-borne dis-ease is the fastest growing infectious disease in America, and the increase I’ve seen in patients with Chronic Lyme Disease is alarming,” said Dr. Stram.

Dr. Ronald Stram, MD, is the founder and medical director of the Stram Center for Integrative Medicine in Delmar, NY and in Bennington, VT. In 2003, he completed the Intergrative Medicine fellowship program at the University of Arizona directed by Dr. Andrew Weil. He believes that prevention and lifestyle management is a key element for the health of individuals and society as a whole.

The Bennington Free Library is located at 101 Silver Street in downtown Bennington. To reserve a seat at the lecture, call 802-445-3152.

In honor of National Grandparents Day, the Bennington Museum will host “Bring Your Grandparent to the Museum” day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 9.

All grandparents accompa-nied by one or more grandchil-dren will enjoy half-priced admission to the museum. Children under 18 are admitted free of charge. Stewart’s Shops are providing the fixings for a Sundae Buffet, and grandpar-

ents can participate with their grandchildren in a variety of activities throughout the galler-ies.

The event was inspired by the children’s book, “How to Take Your Grandmother to the Museum” by Lois Wyse. “We are looking forward to a day of intergenerational fun,” said Director of Public Programs Deana Mallory.

For more information, call the museum at 802-447-1571.

Locals First, a festival of new plays by local writers, will be presented by the Dorset Theatre Festival on September 12 through 15 at the Dorset Playhouse.

“This Locals First Festival was inspired by the Local First Vermont initiative and gives regional audiences an opportu-nity to see what kind of talent exists right in their own back-yards,” said Dina Janis, artistic director.

Kicking off the festival on Wednesday, September 12 will be the presentation of Evelyn Wilde Mayerson’s play “Sit a Spell,” directed by Sheila Childs. Thursday will feature “Lucy’s Wedding,” written and directed by Randolyn Zinn. On Friday, “Antibes” by Ron

Sugarman and directed by Kirk Jackson will be presented. A special Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. of “Sherlock Holmes and the People’s King” by John Nassivera will be a featured activity of the Discover Dorset festival.

Closing out the festival on Saturday evening is a musical presentation of Tajlei Levi’s vintage musical “The Bootlegger and the Rabbi’s Daughter.”

All readings are at 7 p.m., with the exception of the Saturday performance at 2 p.m. Performances are free and open to the public. For more informa-tion or to make a reservation, call the box office at 802-867-2223.

Why you should consider a Medicare Advantage planMedicare Advantage plans include the same benefits as basic Medicare, plus additional coverage. For many people, these plans provide the right balance of value, affordability and peace of mind.

Why it may be a better choice than a supplemental planMedicare Advantage plans are simple to use and easy to understand—with the convenience of a single monthly bill for medical and drug coverage—and they can cost less than supplemental plans.

Why the Star Rating mattersThe Star Rating is a quick way to compare Medicare Advantage plan options. The rating system was developed by the Federal Medicare program, whichrates plans from 1 to 5 stars—with 5 being the best—measuring things likequality and customer service. Before you choose, look to the stars!
