Merck Forest and Farmland Center collaborated with Green Mountain College for its class Sustainable Farming Systems offered this fall.

The course, taught by GMC’s Professor Philip Ackerman-Leist, and supported by MFFC’s Farm Manager, Tim Hughes-Muse, asked students to prepare a farm plan for MFFC that eval-uated current operations, and propose other sustainable farm-ing methods and practices that could be introduced in the future. MFFC, whose goals include teaching and demon-strating sustainable manage-ment of forest and farmland, served as the on-site location for the class.

GMC students visited the farm in the fall, and through

investigations, research, and comparisons to other local farms, the four teams of stu-dents were able to write plans. They presented to their peers and Merck’s Director of Education, Sarah Ullman, Tim Hughes-Muse, and Assistant Farm Manager, Dan Sullivan on Dec. 17 at the college.

Ullman stated that “MFFC offered GMC students the chance to think across a num-ber of scales in the operation of a farm, and in return MFFC received an outside perspective on its farm operations.” Hughes-Muse added, “It was a fantastic experience to have thirty minds thinking about Merck Forest and its future.”

Collaborations like this course with Green Mountain

College are part of Merck Forest and Farmland Center’s mission to teach, demonstrate and sustain a working land-scape. MFFC's 3,100-acre prop-erty, in the Taconic Mountains of southwestern Vermont, is open to the public daily. With no admission fee, the public is invited to spend time on the farm and enjoy 30 miles of trails for hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and horse-back riding. Cabin rentals area also available year-round.

Merck Forest and Farmland Center is located at 3270 Route 315 in, Rupert, VT . More infor-mation is available by calling 802-394-7836, or by visiting www.merckforest.org.
