A Thaumotrope is a toy from the 1900s that was a disk printed on both sides with pictures, and then a hole was punched in either side, threaded with string, and spun back and forth quickly. Due
to the persistence of vision, the two images would appear to merge together.
This particular example was designed to be used with a paper lollipop stick glued between the two images. The toy is then
placed with the stick between two flat palms and spun quickly back and forth with a rubbing motion.
Note: The Pokemon thaumotropes could easily be modified to the original design by gluing two sides together (don’t forget to glue them facing opposite directions, so that
when spun forward, both pictures will appear upright.). Poke a hole on either side of the disk and thread with string.
