exxon scholars named Two Notre Dame students have been named the first Exxon Scholars in a new program launched by the Exxon Research and Engineering Co. to assist minority students in engineering. Cheryl Gomez, a mechanical engineering junior from Pueblo, Colo., and Bruce Savage, an aerospace engineering sophomore from Chicago, each will receive a $3,000 tuition award for the spring semester. Tuition assistance for the students will continue through graduation, and they have been offered summer employment with Exxon.

The Exxon grant also includes $5,000 to support the University's Minority Education Program. The Exxon program is designed to help those minority students who enroll in engineering to remain through graduation. At Notre Dame, only one quarter of black Americans and half of Hispanics who start in engineering actually graduate in the field. Notre Dame's Minority Engineering Program provides individual counselling, individual and group tutoring, special workshops and seminars, field trips to industries, and visits by successful minority engineers.

grant received to establish edison lectures The University has received the first payment of a $125,000 grant from the Charles Edison Fund. The grant will be matched by the University from other sources and the resulting $250,000 will be used to establish the Charles Edison Lecture series in honor of the inventor, Thomas Alva Edison.

The lectures will focus on topics arising from research in science and technology in an effort to encourage students to seek careers in these disciplines and teachers to pursue academic vocations and research in these areas.

erratum The following footnote was omitted from the Faculty Senate Journal, October 11, 1988.

An extensive discussion ensued between Prof. Kathleen Biddick and the president over the Shell Oil controversy and its so-called Neptune Strategy. She sought clarification of the University's involvement (including any of its centers and institutes) in the attempt by Bishop James Armstrong and Prof. S. Prakesh Sethi of New York to circumvent or compromise the University's policy on South Africa and its reputation. The president replied strongly in the negative. The University is not thinking of any participation in any effort associated with Rafael Pagan, who seems to believe he has some intimacy with people at Notre Dame. Any press assertion or accusations that Notre Dame is part of this are wrong. The president said he knows of the report, and in passing knows Bishop Armstrong (formerly Methodist bishop in Indiana). On the larger issue, it is legitimate to think about the future of South Africa, but on this specific question we have no part, there have been no offers of money, no overtures, no conspiracy and no commitment. He has spoken to Prof. Lee Tavis about this, and Tavis is angry at being implicated in it. 1 Notre Dame has no plans to be involved, but a center or an institute like Peace Studies may want to study the question of South Africa's post-apartheid future on an academic level. The president concluded that apologies to Notre Dame and several of its people are in order from Armstrong, Sethi and Pagan.

1 Correspondence between Professors Lee Tavis and Peter Walshe concerning this material is appended to the original of this Journal, and can be consulted in the office of the Faculty Senate by interested parties.
