TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Our Prodigal God

We keep having to relearn how prodigal God is. It is as if God cannot quite manage to say no. We think it is surely fine when God is prodigal with us--rich in mercy and forgiveness, generous in grace. But what about the other--the enemy, the sinner, the heretic, the outsider? Well, we expect God to be as stingy with that person as we are.

Moses and Joshua wanted such a cozy world, too. They wondered how the spirit of God could be given to the two who did not show up at the meeting tent--today's church. And the apostles in the Gospel complained because there were some

miracle workers who were clearly not followers of Jesus.

God's great free-wheeling generosity confounded them all. Let this be, says Jesus. Just see to it that you who lead continue to be worthy of your calling.

IMPORTANT ANNOUCEMENT FROM OUR PASTOR

I want to share the news that Joanne DePasquale Parent, our Confirmation Coordinator and Youth Minister, has accepted the position of Associate Director of Catechesis in the Archdiocese of Newark, effective Monday, September 28, 2015.

Since Joanne joined our staff nine years ago, she has led hundreds of families through the preparation and celebration of their teens’ Confirmation. In addition, she has helped nourish the spiritual journey of our parish teens as leader of our Antioch, Crossroads/High School Faith Sharing and Middle School Youth ministries. Words are inadequate to express our gratefulness and appreciation to Joanne, and we can only wish her the best on her continued personal, professional and spiritual journey.

In the interim, as we pursue securing a permanent leader to fill Joanne’s areas of responsibility, please note: Marilyn Zarzycki, our Director of Faith Formation/Religious Ed., and Diane Byrne, Middle School Faith Formation Coordinator, will

oversee our Confirmation program. Deacon Alfredo Fanelli will lead our Crossroads/High School Faith Sharing and Middle School Youth Ministries. Pete DeNigris will oversee the Antioch ministry. I am grateful for the support and prayers of all of you as we journey through this transition.

A Personal Message from Joanne DePasquale Parent

Serving as your Youth Minister and Confirmation Coordinator has been a privilege and a great source of joy for me. I have been blessed beyond measure by your love, support, trust, and encouragement. I will carry these blessings close to my heart always.

Heartfelt thanks to all who have welcomed me, served with me, prayed with and for me, or taken part in any aspect of Youth Ministry/Confirmation Preparation. Your authentic witness to the love of God inspires us all to deeper faith. I am forever grateful for your generosity of time and talent. Because of you, our faith family is stronger, more vibrant, and richly blessed. You have made a powerful difference in my life. My prayers will be with you as you continue to bring our youth closer to Jesus through your faithfulness, kindness, and compassion.

I’m especially grateful to have worked with so many amazing young people and an incredible parish staff, whom I will miss dearly.

With sincere gratitude, Joanne DePasquale-Parent

ANNUAL PET BLESSING

In honor of St. Francis, join us along with your pet at our annual Pet Blessing on Sunday, October 4, after the 12:15pm Mass (at approximately 1:15pm) on our front lawn on Ridgedale Avenue. Hope to see you and your special pet there!

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP Offered by our Bereavement Ministry

Surviving the loss of a loved one can be a painful and difficult process. Thoughts and feelings arise that may be scary and unfamiliar. If you (or someone you know)

has experienced such a loss and are searching for healing and comfort, please join our six-session Bereavement Support Group. Topics to be covered will include the stages of grieving, strategies for nurturing yourself as you go through these stages, support systems, and dealing with feelings. Where needed, resources and referrals will also be available. The six weekly sessions will be held at Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel, beginning mid-October, 2015. It is required that you register before you participate. If you (or someone you know) can benefit from being part of such a group, call Gerry Fox at 973-514-2008.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS & LECTORS

4th Quarter 2015 Mass assignment schedules are now available on our website. Rosters have been emailed

directly to all ministers. If you do not have online access or have difficulty accessing the schedule online, please stop by our parish office to pick up a paper copy. Bless you for your time and dedication to these ministries!

PARISH PICNIC: A HUGE SUCCESS!

On a perfect late summer day, hundreds of our parish family members turned out at Malapardis Park for an afternoon of fellowship, good food, little ones running and playing and, all in all, just amazing parish spirit! It was a wonderful welcome for Fathers Paddy and Mariusz, and our pastor even treated the crowd to a beautiful rendition of "O, Danny Boy." Our Quilting ministers presented each priest with a beautifully crafted "welcome quilt," which delighted and touched them both.

Heartfelt thanks to all in our Social Events ministry for the hours spent planning and overseeing this great communal event. We are blessed by the work of your hearts and hands!

PRAY THE ROSARY WITH US

The Recitation of the Rosary in the public square is not only one of the most powerful ways to give witness to our faith, but it also an excellent way to introduce others to the Catholic faith and the Fatima message. We have been told by Our Lady that in the end her

Immaculate Heart will triumph over evil. The Rosary to our Blessed Mother can bring peace to our nation, can spread that peace to others and can ultimately help change the world. Please join us on Saturday, October 10, 2015, at 12:30pm, immediately following the 12:10 Mass, in front of Notre Dame Church to pray the Rosary to Our Lady.
