MASS INTENTIONS

Discipleship is a LIFESTYLE

filled with RELATIONSHIPS; a life of pouring yourself out for others.

O P V —Notre Dame of Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic community of faith called to be missionary disciples of Jesus Christ, for the purpose of bringing about the Kingdom.

O P M —Formed by the Word, fed at the Table, and inspired by the Holy Spirit, we INVITE, WELCOME and GUIDE each other into relationship with Christ, to GO OUT and MAKE missionary disciples.

Summoned By God

As Christmas draws near, Advent's scriptures lure us into a world of dreams, signs, wonders, and the miracle of the virgin birth. Too often we allow the great stories of our faith, the ones that are most familiar, simply to wash over us.

Today's Gospel account of the events leading up to the birth of the Lord reads like a present-day soap opera. Yet Joseph's courage, even in

the midst of what must have been an incredibly confusing time, provides a model for us. Each week, we are summoned by God to embrace the way of goodness and truth through the proclamation of God's holy word.

Like Joseph, we are called to do as the Lord commands us. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, let us have the courage to be open to whatever it is that the Lord will require of us as we celebrate the miracle of Bethlehem.

OPERATION APPALACHIA Alternative Christmas Cards

Our Operation Appalachia ministers continue selling Alternative Christmas Cards after every weekend Mass in Advent. This is the perfect gift for family and friends, or anyone on your shopping list who is hard to buy for, or perhaps “already has everything they need.” When you make a donation in someone's name to our Appalachia outreach ministry, you will receive a hand

drawn card to give as a gift. The card describes our ministry and how we will use your support to help rebuild the homes of the poor. Let us help you to be God's hands amongst His poor.

Thank you!

SENIOR LUNCHEON REMINDER! Monday, December 19

MEN'S CORNERSTONE XVII: "SURRENDER TO THE SPIRIT AND THRIVE”

Men of our parish and community, join us for Men's Cornerstone XVII, Friday evening, January 27 & Saturday, January 28, 2017.

Cornerstone is a unique retreat designed to provide participants an opportunity to revitalize and deepen their spiritual lives. The retreat lasts approximately 26 hours, beginning on Friday evening at 6:30pm, and ending with a Closing Mass on Saturday evening at 7:30pm. All participants are provided sleeping accommodations at the parish, which helps ensure the spiritual continuity of the experience for everyone involved. Be sure to visit our website for personal for video of personal testimonials from past participants.

For more information or to register, please visit us at www.ndcarmel.com.

A JOURNEY OF RENEWAL FOR OUR PARISH! Last weekend at all Masses, Fr. Paddy presented a renewed Vision and Mission for our parish family, challenging all of us – priests, deacons, staff, parish leaders, and, indeed, ALL members of our faith community -- to go forth from our strong foundation of vibrant spirituality and welcoming to being a community of missionary disciples, showing the way for others to a deeper relationship with Christ our Savior. If you were not able to be at

one of the Masses, please visit our website to view Fr. Paddy’s message on video.

We are excited about this journey of renewal for our parish. There is a feedback link on our website. We encourage you to offer your opinions. Everyone matters!

Jesus invites us to come to him just as we are. He recognizes the busyness of our lives, how we labor and are overburdened, and he draws us into his loving and gentle presence. He wants

to listen to all our troubles, and he assures us that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. When we spend time with Jesus,

we find rest for our souls. He speaks to us in the silence of our hearts and gives us inner peace.

About 60 of our second graders received for the first time the Sacrament of Reconciliation last week. Our amazing catechists are a great blessing in helping parents prepare their children for the journey...

"I had been preparing my 2nd grade Faith Formation children for the past several months for their First Reconciliation but as the day drew closer they were getting more and more worried. I found these cute little Angels with this lovely poem and told them to put them in their pocket and know that she is there to comfort them and there was nothing to worry about. Some children held them in their hand rubbing her wing. After Reconciliation one boy told me the Angel made him feel so much better that he let his grandma hold her while she received the Sacrament too. What a blessing to witness my ‘angels’ receive their Sacrament for the first time."

- A 2nd Grade Catechist. May we always be mindful to offer prayers of gratitude for our faith leaders -- disciples who are helping plant seeds of faith in the lives of our youth.

Faith Formation classes will not be in session for the next few weeks. Sessions will

resume Sunday, January 8, 2017!

We look forward to celebrating the remaining Advent and Christmas liturgies with your family!

ABOUT OUR FOOD & CLOTHING COLLECTIONS

A couple of gentle reminders regarding our Food & Clothing collection:

Collections take place on the 3rd weekend of each month (food bags are given out by our ushers the previous weekend). In order to help us maintain our space in an organized and welcoming manner (especially during funerals which can happen any day during the week), we would be grateful if these donations are dropped off only on the 3rd weekend.

To help with the transportation of donations, please use the paper bags the ushers hand out for food donations (not for clothing) and plastic garbage bags for the clothing donations.

We are always so grateful for your donations; so many in need right here in our local community are

served by your generosity!

An evangelizing community knows that the Lord has taken the initiative, He has loved us first, and therefore we can move forward, boldly take the initiative, go out to others, seek those who have fallen away, stand at the crossroads and welcome the outcast. Such a community has an endless desire to show mercy, the fruit of its own experience of the power of the Father’s infinite mercy.

Let us try a little harder to take the first step and to become involved. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. The Lord gets involved and He involves His own, as He kneels to wash their feet. He tells His disciples: “You will be blessed if you do this” (John 13:17). An evangelizing community gets involved by word and deed in people’s daily lives; it bridges distances, it is willing to abase itself if necessary, and it embraces human life, touching the suffering flesh of Christ in others. Evangelizers thus take on the “smell of the sheep” and the sheep are willing to hear their voice. An evangelizing community is also supportive, standing by people at every step of the way, no matter how difficult or lengthy this may prove to be. It is familiar with patient expectation and apostolic endurance.
