TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Humility

Have you ever been in a group of people--maybe on a tour, at a social gathering, or at church--and discovered that you have just been talking with a well-known author, corporate CEO, great scholar, or politician? Your first thought is the hope that you didn't say anything to embarrass yourself; but your second thought is how much they seemed like such "regular" folks. What is it that makes people seem so "regular"? Today's readings give us a clue when they stress the importance of

humility.

It is so hard for us not to tell the first person who will listen how busy we are, how hard we work, how much money we donate, and how important our job titles are. We think these accolades make a difference to people, and if we don't tell them, how will they ever know? But if our actions demonstrate our values, people will recognize our worth on their own.

The words of Jesus show us how much better it is to let someone else recognize our worth than to be embarrassed because someone did not.

Please, join us for our 9/11 MEMORIAL SERVICES

Sunday, September 11, 2016 8:30am & 1:15pm

at our World Trade Center Memorial Plaza in front of the church.

A CATHOLIC’S DIVORCE SURVIVAL SERIES Bringing hope & healing to divorced Catholics

Divorce affects everyone, whether it's you, a family member, friend or coworker. It happens, and it hurts. This journey can help those who have gone through a divorce go from pain and loneliness to hope and healing. Practical advice meets pastoral care, with the help of experts and others who have suffered through divorce. As they witness to their pain and to the redemptive power of Christ, you will identify with their journey from heartache to healing.

The 12-week program takes place on Monday evenings, beginning Monday, September 19, 2016, 7:30-9pm here at Notre Dame. Register online at www.ndcarmel.com. If you have any questions regarding this program, please contact Patty Migliore-Torres at [email protected] or 973-610-3242, or Mike Letterese at [email protected] or 973-998-0750.

ANNUAL HAITI FOOD DRIVE IS COMING SOON!

Many of the people living in Cap-Haitien continually turn to the Missionaries of the Poor for daily food and supplies. Because of this increased demand, their food supplies are being stretched to the limit and are running low at present. As we begin the food drive in the upcoming weeks, we ask that you please keep in mind the tremendous needs of the people of Haiti and be as generous as you always have been to this ministry in the past. This year's drive at Notre Dame will take place in our Gathering Space as follows:

The cards describing the items needed for the drive, will be available the weekend of September 17 & 18, before and after the weekend Masses.

The collection of food etc., will take place the weekends of September 24 & 25 and October 1 & 2.

We are also in need of volunteers to help staff the table in the Gathering Space before and after Mass, and also to help transport the collected food to St. Matthew's in Randolph on the weekend of October 1 & 2.

Your support of this effort will be a blessing to our brothers and sisters in Haiti. If you have any questions regarding the drive, or can volunteer to help during the drive, please contact John Verga via e-mail at [email protected], or by phone at 973-714-6604.

and 1993 attacks will be commemorated as visitors have the opportunity to learn about the men, women, and children who died. You may also visit the Memorial, consisting of twin memorial reflecting pools in the footprints of the original twin towers, around which are inscribed 2,982 names. After time for quiet reflection, proceed to Little Italy for an included lunch. Bus departs our parking lot at 8:30am, returning around 5:15pm. Cost per person is $94.

OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN BATON ROUGE NEED OUR HELP!

Catholic Charities in Baton Rouge needs our help concerning the massive flooding that overcame their area recently. According to the organization, the news has not reported accurately the intensity of their devastation. The cleanup will obviously take some time and the staff of Catholic Charities is now overwhelmed & short staffed but trying to keep their spirits up & stay composed for the sake & service of others. One of their members mentioned she herself has taken 11 relatives into her home; however, there are 10,000 people still in shelters in Baton Rouge and surrounding areas, many rescued by boat.

They are asking for monetary donations at this time, which will help them service the people in the area. Donations should be payable to Catholic Charities and mailed to PO Box 1668, Baton Rouge, LA 70821. For more information or to make a donation online please visit the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge webpage at www.ccdiobr.org.
