Some updates on our classmates…

Seems like it’s that time in our lives when many are celebrating 50th wedding anniversaries. That would include Sue Carozza Gough and Al whose children planned a grand gala for them. Sue said it was as hot at their party as it was 50 years ago on their wedding day. Sue’s son, Al, is a TV producer currently working on two shows, “Badlands” and “Shanara,” both in their third seasons. He travels back and forth from LA, Ireland, and New Zealand while filming. Al has three children, ages 17, 13, and 11. Sue’s daughter, Cecilia is a resource teacher in Fredericksburg, VA, and has two daughters, 15 and 17. Daughter Katie is a professor at the University of Burlington in Vermont and has recently written and produced a play that had a stage reading in August. (Pat Montley, watch out!) Finally, Sue’s youngest son, Max, is an independent photographer, designer and soon to be realtor.

Jumping into the “Travel Section,” Carolyn McLean has been doing some cruising. In March she sailed from Miami to Barcelona with exotic stops along the way. The best news from her though is that her son David has had his last chemo treatment and is cancer free. She thanks us for our collective prayers. We must be very powerful…Maribeth has also been cruising with a trip to Budapest and the Czech Republic. Carolyn Finnerty and Ray traveled to Texas in March and to Portugal in May. Phoebe Ward Sachs, reports a fabulous spring trip to China, which I suppose wins her the greatest-distance-traveled award. Carol Toohey, Jim, and family visited their 50th state, Alaska in July. Speaking of Tess, some wonderful news, she will be completing her six-year term on the Provincial Team of the Holy Union Sisters in Rome at the end of this year and will be returning to the states, taking some time to think about her next role for her order. It is well known that “nuns” never retire, but it surely will be great to have her available for our usual get togethers.

It’s news in itself that I can report on no new grandchildren for Joanna in the past year. Not to worry, however, I know for a fact that information will be forthcoming. While our numbers of grandchildren may be slowing down, I’m betting there are some great grandchildren out there. Please let me know.

The Marcy Peters 2nd Annual Luncheon took place in July. Seven classmates attended, and all look forward to repeat performances in years to come.

I recently received a note from M.K. Hense Hokanson with her current email address. She retired from Brigham Young University in 2010, then served a two-year mission with her husband, Devon, teaching English in homes. Devon and she are known as professional “story-tellers,” and M.K.’s great interest is loom-knitting which she does mostly for cancer patients and refugees. Pat Montley never disappoints on the professional front. She is one of a dozen contributors to Unruly Catholic Nuns, an anthology of essays by nuns and ex-nuns just published by State University of New York Press. Pat’s pieces include an essay,

“Journey to Unruliness” and a scene from her play, “Bible Herstory.”

Finally, most know that Maxine lost her dear husband, Jack, in February and Puddy Boyle lost her dear husband, Frank, in May. Warm thoughts, prayers and wishes go out to both of them.

Members of the Class of ’65 hit the road this summer and visited some interesting places. Deborah Bender and her husband travelled to Oregon in July. After landing in Portland, they made their way to very scenic Cannon Beach where they were treated to ice cream cones kindness of the brother of one of her book club members. A continuing tour of the coast included viewing a 4th of July parade, highlighted by quite a number of vintage (really old) cars. Deborah stayed on an extra week to join a Habitat Global Village build in Corvallis. Raising the long wall of the 1300 foot house was the highlight of the week—the entire Habitat Office staff turned out to help her team plus several local volunteers.

Anne Peter Hahn and husband Dave vacationed in Yosemite this year, and also went to South Carolina to see the total eclipse. Anne is retiring from Johns Hopkins in October. She has nothing planned at the moment for her big birthday but wishes she could order a lamb cake from the Herchowski family bakery. Darlene, do you have the recipe?

Kathy Callanan Sharpless and husband Sam have moved into their new home in Marsh Creek, St Augustine, FL, and are loving it. Kathy keeps busy with garden, tennis, bridge and Women’s Association with docent duties at the historic Pena-Peck House in St Augustine. She is planning a fun 70th celebration with Mary Brent Toohey Buckett and Marian

Lipinski coming to St Augustine in October to visit the Dressing Downtown Tour at The Lightner Museum. She is looking forward to their visit and asks if anyone is planning to visit her area please let her know.

Helen Castrilli Gilbert and her husband have moved to Port Hueneme, CA, having made the decision two years ago to sell their Hunt Valley home and go west. After divesting of some furniture and “stuff”, they made several trips to Southern CA and lived as “vagabonds” for six months before deciding on the small beach town just north of LA. Helen says, “Talk about starting over … well I’m doing it at age 70 and loving it.’’

Donna Klemkowski LaVerghetta has had a tough year. She lost both of her parents within four months: her father in March and her mother in July. They were married for 71 years. She welcomed her eighth grandchild in September, 2016, baby Henry McGowan, named for Donna’s father. Parents are daughter Mary Beth (Class of ’98) and her husband Joe.

Nancy Bowers would like to be the first to say “Happy Birthday!” to the youngsters among us who are still looking forward to the Big 7-0. She reports that although now she is officially “elderly,” she feels about 50. Next time I would love to know and report on who among us is still working. Happy Fall!

Warm greetings to my Green and Gold sisters. Have a little news to share. Millie Hooper LaFontaine says that “ lots has happened in my household during the past year! Our son Peter married Isabel Ricker in May 2016, and they are currently living in Washington, D.C. Our youngest son Dan married Ellen Patterson in July 2016. Dan just completed a doctorate in physical therapy, and they are moving to Minneapolis in September. Our oldest son, Andy, and his wife, Christie, are the proud parents of our first grandchild, Cora, born in May of this year. I just retired after 35 years in the practice of neurology in December 2016, and have enjoyed every minute of the past eight months! I love waking up every day on “vacation,” with a million things to do, and finally (almost)

enough time to do it!” Dottie Hermann Mooney shares that “I moved out of my house of 20 years and relocated to a smaller house in Murray Hill. I sold my house to my son, Danny, and his wife, Evan, and three children, ages 5, 3, and 10 months. My new address is 900 Applegate Lane, 21212. It’s tiny and very manageable and I am so happy that I made the move.” Trish Toti Kolker is “still in little Ashland, Oregon. Jimmy and I retired from The Blue Giraffe Spa a few years ago by handing our keys over to our manager and are having a great time together. She is buying us out over a period of time. I still have my foot in the door as we want to remodel again and update some of the product selections. I appreciate that she wants me to keep our brand as the spa is going on 18 years old and with The Shakespeare Festival here, from February thru late October, we have many guests who visit every year. We have six grandchildren now from 12 to eight months. Some here, some in Portland and some in France. We travel around the US in a Roadtreck Sprinter. So nice to just go without a real agenda. We are leaving for time in Yellowstone and Jackson Hole starting on the 19th. Looking forward to a few weeks as the change of season happens. Then going into the holidays in our new home. I spent several months as the general contractor for a complete remodel. It feels great to have things exactly as we want it. Hope all is well with everyone. Anxious to read news from all.” I just had dinner with Nancy Kelly Lehner last week —my dear friend since the 5th grade. Her daughter, Mary Beth, is to be wed this coming November so exciting times ahead for Nancy and her family. On a different note, it is with great sadness that I must share that we lost two of our classmates this year... Debby Bateman Patty and Pat Kucharski Kureth. Please keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers. By the way, just a little reminder that 2018 is just around the corner. A certain class that we know and love so well will be celebrating our 50th high school anniversary. I hope one of our classmates will step up to head organizing this very special event. I am happy to help make this a fun and memorable event! Meanwhile, please continue to send me your news and may we all enjoy a joyous holiday season and coming new year—imagine 2018—what a very special year for all of us—Best wishes to all!

Barbara Vitale Wood challenged the class to let us know what was going on with them and I received a number of responses to the challenge. Barb and her husband coordinate serving meals through Victory Villa Baptist Church for a men’s homeless ministry called Streets of Hope which has proved to be a rewarding experience. They also continue their love of ballroom and swing dancing. Barb’s happy to say that her dad is still living a full life at age 90 – playing golf and flying his own airplane!

Carol Watkins Reid went on a fabulous trip to Switzerland and Italy with her family over the summer and saw 12 cities/villages in 15 days. Carol is teaching piano and organ at Bryn Mawr School, Catonsville Senior Center, and home so she is really busy. Carol’s daughters have followed in her artistic footsteps – older daughter Erin teaches fourth grade in Baltimore as well as dancing and doing choreography; currently working on a show for the Baltimore Rock Opera Society. Younger daughter Amy works full time at the Wine Source and is also a musician/singer. Her first solo CD recently debuted on Friends Records. Dottie Caldwell Lopez is still writing and has been published twice on the Erma Bombeck Writer’s Workshop site. The links are: http://humorwriters.org/2017/07/31/funny-dog-story/ and http://humorwriters.org/2017/02/21/puppy-training-101-blame-husband/. Dottie still writes a travel blog dorothyadele.wordpress.com. She and her family are heading to London at the end of September for the Ravens game and will

then head to Munich for Oktoberfest and on to Austria.

Sherree McNamara Devor got married in 2013 to Charlie Devor who is Chief Warrant Officer 5 in the Army National Guard. They live in Chambersburg, PA, and Sherree is Program Coordinator for the Council for the Arts in Chambersburg. Sherree is an avid cyclist and she and her husband just returned from a cycling trip in the San Juan Islands of Washington and also visited daughter Ashley who lives in Portland, Oregon. Sherree’s younger daughter Chelsea lives in Raleigh, NC.

Charisse Fenari Wernecke has a new granddaughter, Violet, born in July. Also son Austin married his college sweetheart, Caroline in August. Kathy Reahl Auth was happy to let us know that her third grandchild, Maverick, was born in August. He is the younger brother of 3-1/2 year old Mila and 2 year old Everett. Jill Boggs Rowan moved back to the Baldwin area from Belcamp so that she can be closer to her parents and grandchild. Margaret Case Gugerty is excited that daughter Kate will be making her a grandmother in November.

Mary Galvin O’Conor Wilson and her husband hosted a lovely reception to celebrate the marriage of their son Bill. It was a very special evening joined by classmates Karen Kehoe Lindenmeyer, Karen Kohlhepp Raubach, Tracey Henson Ford, Janice Hunt Damon, Brienne Pratt Fiske and myself. It was a big year for Mary Galvin as her son Brian graduated from law school a few weeks before his brother’s wedding. Carolyn Finlay McCombe recently retired after 30 years of teaching kindergarten and 1st grade. She is looking forward to more time at their home in Ocean Pines as well as spending time with grandchildren Molly (10), Tucker (8), Bryn (4) and Emerson (4 months). Carolyn’s oldest daughter Kim, who has coached at NDP for years, will now be teaching health and physical education.

Mary Lyons Dawson is still loving life in Montrose near LA. She has had Jon Crier, Amy Adams, and the “Menéndez Brothers” all in town recently filming their shows. She loves to get the inside scoop on all of these shows before they are aired! Katie O’Neill is still living in

North Carolina teaching high school art and planning to retire in February. She and her husband will celebrate their 30th anniversary this year and they will celebrate by shag dancing in South Carolina. They are fortunate to have grandchildren in California giving them an excuse to visit every year.

Katie Cinnamond Doyle has lived in Boston for the past 10 years with her husband Michael. They spend their summers in Spring Lake, NJ. Daughter Bailey lives in San Francisco working for Clorox but makes a point of visiting the NJ home a few times each summer. Daughter Kelly lives in Boston working in sales for Forrester Research, the same company where Michael is CFO. The family are huge Notre Dame fans (Michael and Bailey being alums) and plan to attend games at Notre Dame and BC this fall.

Sue Hill Gebhardt is now a resident of Ocean Isle Beach, NC and would love to know if any classmates are living in the area. She is representing the USA in the 70.3 Half Ironman World Championship in Chattanooga, TN and then the 140.3 Full Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Good luck Sue!

Melissa Allen Moser asked me to remind everyone that there is a Facebook page for our class – NDP ’74. If you are on Facebook, please join and you can keep up with everyone’s activities more than twice a year.

’76 Colleen Hood Cusick has completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. She completed her coursework in 2017 with a project entitled “Basic Supply Chain Education: A Program for Nurses.”

Greetings Ladies, I hope you are all enjoying a beautiful Autumn. We are so excited for our 40th reunion at NDP on Saturday, October 21st! We have planned a special mass for our class at 5 PM,

3

classchatterclasschatter

Mary Galvin O’Conor Wilson, Tracey Henson Ford, Karen Kehoe Lindenmeyer, Natalie Aiken Shields, Janice Hunt Damon, Karen Kohlhepp Raubach

with the reunion festivities immediately following. Please plan to attend! In honor of our NDP graduation 40 years ago, and in memory of our sisters that we have lost, we encourage everyone to consider a gift to NDP in honor of “The Angels of ‘77” (Susan Lawrence, Patty Moxley Howachyn, and Carol Robbins Lavin). Any amount would be appreciated. Remember, it is the participation by our class that is most important. We would love to donate a generous gift in honor of our angels, and raise the Class of ‘77’s giving participation to our beloved NDP!

Here are updates from several of our classmates, below:

Cindy Yochum Fessick: My son Andrew is starting high school this fall. I just won my 9th women’s golf club championship! The latest was at Stone Harbor Golf Club (my fourth one there—a big deal to me because I have had three joint replacements. What’s wrong with this picture—aren’t the joint replacements supposed to come

AFTER the kids graduate from college?)

Carol Salazar Udvarhelyi: It has been a busy few months as we moved our family home from Malvern, PA, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana! We love our new house, and are busy settling in and getting to know our new city. Our daughter Katie, a recent college graduate, has moved to Baton Rouge with us and is looking at work opportunities. Son Ian accepted a consulting job with Accenture and will be living in Philadelphia. Our oldest daughter, Tory, and her husband are living in Denver, and will be celebrating their one-year anniversary in October. I hope my NDP ‘77 sisters visit us here often, and of course, the “big easy” is just down the road!

Kathy Stanley Wilmot: Lise Guay Wolfe and I celebrated her retirement by spending the weekend at Harry Potter World and Epcot down in Florida- we had a blast! We just built a new house in Fenwick, Delaware and loved our summer at the beach! Mike and I are traveling to Haiti on a mission with our church in October. Unfortunately, it will be the same week our class is having its 40year reunion! I will be celebrating with all of you in spirit!!

Terry DeMatteo Pugh: As most are aware, our son Dominic has been battling cancer, but I am delighted to share that his tumor has responded significantly to the treatment. The size of the tumor shrunk substantially and is no longer pressing on his brain or the surrounding structures. He will continue with chemo for the next few

months and he will be re-evaluated after another three rounds. So, while we are not out of the dog house yet, his progress has been tremendous. Your prayers and kind words have been instrumental to his progress and I will never be able to express my gratitude to all of you enough!

Jo-Anne Devuono Miller: I’m pleased to announce the birth of my first grandchild—Hannah Rose Miller, born July 2nd. Also, my daughter will be getting married on Nov.11th, 2017!

Sally Fitzpatrick Waller: My scattered family just reunited for a wonderful vacation in August —canyon hiking in Utah and Arizona. Zion National Park is unbelievably beautiful. We hiked Zion, Bryce NP, the Grand Canyon and Sedona, and even toured the Hoover Dam. I finally got to see the desert and cacti and succulents in their natural environment. My son, Conor, is working as a civil engineer at Stratcom (US Strategic Air Command) at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha. His twin brother, Keene, is living in Boston and working as a mechanical engineer. I am in my 15th year teaching middle school English at Loyola Blakefield. I coach middle school cross country and track and field (remember that trivia question from a previous reunion – “Who in our class is a shotput coach at Loyola?”).

Rose Schmitz Marcin: My husband, Bill, and I continue to enjoy retired life. We love to visit our oldest 2 grandchildren in CA! Our son, John, and his family have moved to NYC where he has begun law school at NYU. We’ll also be traveling to NY to visit our youngest grandchild!

Karen Meekins Benckini: The last year has been challenging for our family, as my husband Todd was diagnosed with neck and throat cancer. He received excellent care at Johns Hopkins where he had surgery and radiation, and has responded well. As a family, we were so thankful and we celebrated his recovery with two memorable vacations —in the spring we went to Club Med in Cancun Mexico, and this summer we ventured up to Cooperstown, NY, for our son’s week-long baseball tournament. Cooperstown is a mecca for baseball fans, especially with the Hall of Fame Museum! We also hosted a college baseball player this summer from UNC, who lived with us while playing for the collegiate Cal Ripken League. This was our second year as a host family; it’s fun to have an “adopted” son for a few months!

Twins Joey and Gigi are now 13 years old and are 7th graders. When not working at Clapp Communications, I’m mainly the Mom taxi, driving the kids to all their sports practices, games and social events!

We extend our deepest sympathies to those who have lost a loved one:

• The Family of Carol Robbins Lavin

• Cathryn O’Brien Coale on the death of her father

• Josie Kelly O’Rourke on the death of her brother

• Bernadette Bolte on the death of her mother

• Kay Carney on the death of her mother.

Happy fall everyone! Here’s what the sisters of 1980 have been doing. Maria Prezioso Beyer and her husband Donnie live in Woodsboro Maryland with their blended family of five children and nine grandchildren! When Maria isn’t busy with the family she teaches at the local elementary school as a sub. Maria does come in to Towson to see her mom so you may see her locally.

Laura Stedman has switched gears. After working for nine years at the Harbor School is now the first female maintenance mechanic at Towson University! Congrats to Laura and she is taking care of Tower A freshman dorm so tell you kids to be neat and tidy if they are there.

Cindy Sekercan Sellmayer lives in Hampton Gardens with her husband of 31 years Greg and their rescue pup Snow. They have two grown sons—Tyler who lives in Sunnyvale California and Nick who lives locally. Cindy is a Project Analyst with NMP Engineering Consultants in Hunt Valley. Cindy and her bestie, Lisa Weber Castaneda, see each other regularly. Maura Keogh Iacoboni and her husband Anthony just celebrated 33 years of marriage! Maura is an RN and for the past 12 years has her own Health and Wellness business. Maura has four sons and is getting ready to celebrate her 31-year-old AJ’s marriage. Her youngest Jack attends Towson University and is

working at the Green Turtle, so say hello when you go to the Turtle! Maura and Jack volunteer at BARCS so remember to adopt. Patty Buschman Curtin lives in Woodstock with her husband John and two children Sam, age 20, Ellie who is 15, and their two dogs and cat. Please keep Patty in your prayers. She is a brave warrior battling breast cancer. Patty and Barbara Bagliani Clary recently met for breakfast when Barbara was in town. Patty sent me a beautiful photo of she and Barb, looking great ladies! Anne Wyatt Thornhill had many celebrations this past year. Both sons Patrick and James were married. It is a small world since James married Mary Beth Wilkerson’s daughter Maggie! Many of Anne’s friends, including myself had a mini-reunion in Dallas Texas for Patrick’s wedding. Carolyn Mosher Reeder is a busy woman working at Kaiser Premanente Medical Center, and is the Decoration Chair for NDP’s Gala! Carolyn and her husband Bill have two children Lauren Anne, who is getting ready to get her ring at NDP and her son Price Dawson who is leaping into adulthood. Carolyn still runs into Vicky Hargest Dowling at the hospital. Lisa Airey had the distinct honor of being knighted by the French government into the Order Merite Agcricole for her contribution to the French wine industry. Lisa is a grandmother to two year old named Theodore George Reiter Renaud. Lastly please keep Kelly O’Conor Buedel and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Her sister in law Jackie Buedel was an amazing women who inspired many, gave to the less fortunate and left this world a better place.

Greetings from the OBX! After twenty years in our adopted city of Manhattan, Chris and I decided to take the plunge and move to the Outer Banks of NC. We had a great summer here. Tyler (who just turned 19) worked in a seafood market, lost 15 pounds of Fraternity weight, and drove off to his sophomore year at Elon in our new truck. Our NYC tenants are a lovely family from New Zealand, and I will continue

to freelance in NYC, so we still have a presence there! But Southern Shores is a very special place, and we feel blessed. Kelly Doyle Oakes was following my posts of sunsets from our deck, Augie on the beach, hummingbirds in my garden, etc. and called me one afternoon from a mutual friend’s house, thinking we might be close. As we were less than five minutes from Re Marconi Weis’s house, by evening we were drinking too much wine and having a blast! I’m also looking to freelance with all the many wedding planners in the area, so that will keep this empty nester busy.

On a sad note, my husband, Chris, lost his dad in June at 81 years old. He had been sick for some time, but his passing still hit us hard. And on September 11, an emotionally challenging day for me since 2001, I found out that my sister had an accident and died the day before. Thank you to my NDP sisters for the outpouring

of sympathy and love during those difficult days.

Mary Epstein Jackson writes about her daughter Lindsay’s trip to Israel: “It was fantastic! Ten days all over Israel, where she got to learn about her Jewish heritage. The group went into the Dead Sea, spent time in Jerusalem Haifa Musada. They even spent a night in a huge tent in the desert. Hello Class of 2009! I was thinking about y’all so much this past spring. My little sister Claire (’17) graduated from NDP back in May. Her class also had green name tags/our Gym Meet corner, and I was able to spend a good bit of time back at the Prep. I visited Liz Schiavone’s classroom and reminisced on our glory days. I was shocked to realize this fall marks 10 years since we got our rings…! Luckily, I was also humbled a few times after Claire’s Baccalaureate Mass, when multiple parents asked me where I would be going to college next year. While I was a glass case

of emotion trying to explain “no, actually I graduated eight years ago, but yes, please still ask me about Gym Meet,” the rest of our classmates have been truly crushing it! Jacqueline (Fontana) Summer got married in Baltimore on July 1, 2017 to Kyle Summer of Chapin, SC. A number of NDP grads were in attendance, and her sister and fellow NDP alumna, Christina Fontana ’06, was her maid of honor. Jacqueline and Kyle are now living in Greenville, SC, as she is the Director of Marketing at Clemson University.

Liz Hoey just started her second year of grad school at the UMB school of social work. She’s also interning at Strong City and working part time at YouthREACH Maryland.I’ve been so impressed at how many Pink and Blue sisters are getting involved and working to make the world a better place. Lea Faraone was the national Great Strides ambassador for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation across the entire US for 2017! She’s been an incredible advocate for the CF community, and the turnout for Team LEAF at the Great Strides Walk in Baltimore on May 25th was a testament to all of her hard work. Lea, Biff Peroutka, Jill Keffer, Laura Schneider, Chelsea Benney and I were able to snap a picture before the walk outside Ravens’ Stadium (#BMORElike09), and tons of other classmates donated online to the CF Foundation.

From fundraising for walks and marathons, to working in hospitals and education, our class is doing so much important stuff for the community. Keep up the great work, friends!
