Join us in May 2013 when the
festival brings you two fantastic
weeks of the very best of local,
emerging and internationally
renowned talent right in the
heart of Notting Hill. Here you
will find music, opera, sound
art, dance, theatre, visual art,
lectures, and workshops.
For 2013 the Mayfest continues with its commitment to an emerging talent theme, and presents an array of talent including the Outcry Orchestra, Orfeas String Quartet and
the future stars of opera, featured in the Aeolian Court Opera production of La Boheme. This year, musicians and artists were also invited to respond to our creative theme ‘Organ, Wind and Air,’ inspired by a historic organ which has been a part of Notting Hill since 1845 at St John’s Church on Lansdowne Crescent. We are honoured that Thomas Trotter, internationally renowned organist, will perform a concert to celebrate the return of this newly restored organ, and the opening of an exhibition about its history and the surrounding area. Mercury Prize nominee and folk singer Sam Lee will also be gracing us for an evening of folk, supported by The Collectress and Nancy Wallace.
So come and explore the hidden histories of this neighbourhood by visiting a unique exhibition about a hippodrome that once was on St John’s hill, immerse yourself in the sound of a laptop orchestra, see Quasimodo in our spectacular screening of the Hunchback of Notre Dame with live organ, experience a premiere of new music with the Outcry Orchestra and Orfeas String Quartet, or hear local talent from West London in Community Choirs and the Young Lyric Voices.
The organ in St John’s Notting Hill is a significant heritage item and continues to inspire creative community activity. The organ is directly

The organ also contains a now very rare action mechanism installed in the nineteenth century called a Barker Lever action, invented by Charles Spackman Barker. Inspired by steam engines, Barker developed pneumatic power for the organ to replace finger power to open the valves that allow wind to enter the pipes in the organ. This action is now very rare; it was only made for a relatively short period and this organ
is one of only six organs in the UK with a working Barker Lever action.
The organ has now been newly restored, and Mayfest 2013 celebrates its return. The organ continues to inspire and make history through music, art, historical research, and community engagement. William Wilberforce counts among the people who listened to the organ. Will you be next to join him?
Get Involved
We are looking for festival stewards to help with running the events. Duties will include ushering, ticket sales, bar sales, front of house, stage management and artist liaison. It’s a great opportunity for anyone looking to get into Arts Administration or Events Management.
We require friendly, enthusiastic and reliable volunteers to invigilate the gallery on various occasions during the festival, and to assist with the launch night. This will involve welcoming and greeting visitors to the gallery space, talking to them about the work, being a link between artists and buyers, and ensuring the security of the artworks.
If you’re interested in volunteering or invigilating please get in touch at [email protected]

SILENT FILM
In this unique concert the iconic film Hunchback of Notre Dame, based on the novel by Victor Hugo, will be accompanied
by live improvisation on the pipe organ with celebrated classic silent film organist Donald Mackenzie. Presented by Film Fugitive, a cinema that’s always on the run, screening films in unusual and unique locations turning a trip to the movies into an event to remember. Join us for an unforgettable movie experience in a candlelit church, immersed in the awesome and atmospheric sound of the organ, played in Donald’s inimitable style. With delicious food and fantastic drinks, this is an enjoyable and engaging night out with friends and family.
Carl Laemmle’s 1923 production for Universal helped establish this picture company as one of the finest. Much of the success depended on the actor who played the lead role. Lon Chaney, who began his silent film career in 1913, was paid $2,000 a week during the 6 month shoot. Chaney designed his own make-up for the role he took of Quasimodo, and referred throughout to Victor Hugo’s descriptions and sketches. The gruelling three-hour make-up session resulted in Chaney looking as if he had walked off the pages of Victor Hugo’s novel. It was often
said that Chaney (as an actor) could express in two or three gestures what pages of dialogue could not.
The film is also an enormous milestone in set design and art direction. The set, which reconstructed Paris in 1482, filled 19 acres on the Universal back lot, and these buildings were also used in other films, until, tragically, the set was destroyed by fire in 1967.
The film employed 200 costume staff, 230 electricians, and more than 2,000 extras for the climatic scene in which French peasants storm the hallowed portals of Notre Dame Cathedral. The premiere took place at the Astor Theatre on 2 September 1923. The success for Universal and Carl Laemmle was immediate, and turned Lon Chaney into a screen legend.
The score will be improvised on the organ by Donald MacKenzie.

An evening of Folk with Sam Lee, Nancy Wallace and The CollectressThursday, May 23, 2013 - 8:00pm,
St John’s Church
An evening of folk with Sam Lee, Nancy Wallace and The Collectress, some of the best musicians performing on
the folk scene in London today.Sam Lee, the Mercury Prize and
Folk Music Awards nominated folk singer will be gracing us with an intimate performance of songs from his much praised album Ground of Its Own. Sam Lee is one of Britain’s finest singers and the most cogent force of his generation in British folk music; an heir to the great revival during the 1950s and 60s led by Martin Carthy and the Watersons, and Fairport Convention in their wake, Lee brings contemporary folk music back to whence much of it came: Roma, Gypsies and Scottish and Irish Travellers, who have passed these songs from generation to generation over centuries.
“You will be dumbfounded by Sam Lee with duck-egg eyes,
a horseshoe smile and an honest, confiding baritone”
The Guardian
Nancy Wallace is a singer and musician guitarist and concer- tina player, her approach to both instruments, and her interpreta- tions of both traditional material and her own songs, sets her apart on the contemporary folk scene. Wallace creates an atmosphere and intimacy with her audience which is not to be missed.
The Collectress, an all-female multi-instrumental quartet described as a cross between the Elysian Quartet and ‘’possessed Bronté sisters teasing an un- suspecting dinner party’’ (Foxy Digitalis), bring experimental and lyrical music performed with strong visual play. Performed in the beautiful surroundings of St John’s Church, this will be an evening of contemporary folkish charm.

John Fowles 1963 novel of a man whose obsession with a woman drives him to ‘collect’ her too, and add her to his butterfly
collection, is a story of obsession, power, and tragedy. Adapted into a play by Mark Healy in 1998, The Collector is performed by emerging artists for the first time in the UK following a successful production in Romania this year. Directed by Theo Herghelegiu, the audience is assured an evening of intense suspense accompanied by the eerie sound design of pipe organ, drawing them in to the disturbed psyche of the protagonist Frederick Clegg, and his victim Miranda Grey.

Open EveningMonday, May 13, 2013
7:00pm St John’s Church
In celebration of the return of the newly restored organ in the north transept of St. John’s Church, there will be an exhibition opening during Mayfest in the Sacred Space Gallery, stimulatingly situated directly opposite the organ’s new location. Encompassing both our emerging talent and creative theme, the overreaching theme will be ‘Threads of Sound’. This invitation to both visual and sound artists summons a response to the multiple threads of the transformed church, and the organ’s threads into different cultures and periods of history, including investigations inspired by the architectureof the space; the new mechanics and visual appearance of the organ; and how these may resonate sonically. The exhibition showcases the work of photographer Philip Pinchin and textile artist Jess Smulders Cohen, amongst others.
Join us for the opening event on the 13th May to initiate the show, and for an evening of performances by London based practitioners who will explore the sonic characteristics of the organ. Complementary wine included.
