Welcome to Nottingham Playhouse – world class theatre, made in Nottingham and as diverse as our community and this year we’re pulling out all the stops. After the euphoric reaction to last year’s production we’re reviving the wonderful Forever Young to give everyone a much needed boost in February; songs, dance, comedy and pathos – this show has it all. If you’ve seen it before why not come again and bring a friend and if you haven’t why not come and see what all

the fuss is about? Steven Berkoff remains one of the world’s most exciting and challenging playwrights and he returns to Nottingham following the great success of On The Waterfront, to direct his own adaptation of Oedipus for us - an event that will be one of the national highlights of the theatrical year. This is followed by another remarkable event , the UK professional premiere of a play by Henrik Ibsen, The League Of Youth. We have commissioned Andy Barrett (Garage Band) to write a new version as part of a major festival which is taking place in Nottingham and it will surprise and delight everybody with its topicality and satiric humour. Add to this three of the world’s most exceptional dance companies –

Australian Dance Theatre in their only UK date, Ailey 2 from New York and Danish Dance Theatre. There’s also a wonderful range of delights for children plus comedy, music and the chance to take part with our new youth theatres and adult summer school. We look forward to seeing you at The Playhouse in 2011. Giles Croft Stephanie Sirr Artistic Director Chief Executive

You laughed, you sang, you cheered, you demanded we bring it back – so here it is!It is 2050 and Nottingham Playhouse is now a rest home for actors; senior rebels with a cause. Left unsupervised, care plans go out of the window and suddenly old age has no barriers. This theatrical SAGA soon shows us they are hell-bent on stayin’ alive. From Nirvana to Aqua, Aretha Franklin to Gloria Gaynor,

nothing is off vocal limits. A musical marathon effortlessly combining 31 songs into just 1 number? No problem. A couple of hours in the company of Mr Bednarczyk, Mr Elkington, Mr Jardine, Ms Little, Mr Powell, Ms Storey and Sister Alex will leave you with a renewed zest for life and fully equipped to grow old disgracefully. What other show offers you laughter, tears, dancing and goldfish?

The citizens are in the grasp of devastation, famine and plague. What has angered the gods so, to make them reduce a once-great city to misery and ruin?

The murder of King Laius lies at the heart of the destruction. Oedipus the King will not rest until he has found the killer and lifted the curse. But his arrogance and self-importance blind him to the shocking truth. Banishing those who challenge him, he

refuses to accept where the blame truly lies.As the darkness surrounding Thebes deepens and taboos are shattered, the horror of Oedipus’s actions are revealed to him in an unforgettable climax.Steven Berkoff returns to Nottingham Playhouse following his hugely successful On the Waterfront which subsequently performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, in the West End, and at the prestigious Hong Kong International Festival of Arts.

Sick of the two established parties and their vested interests, one man promises a third option with a radical agenda: to champion the people and remake politics. But does The League of Youth herald a future fair for all, or the same old small-town corruption? And is Stensgaard a hero in the making – or a man on the make? Switching his allegiances at the drop of a rosette, and enmeshed in a string of romantic affairs, Stensgaard rapidly comes unstuck.

Ibsen’s political farce has long been praised for its sparkling wit and cynical humour. But The League of Youth is uncanny in the mirror it holds up to present-day Britain, where every promise leads to compromise in the rush to snatch a share of the power. A brand new version by Andy Barrett (Garage Band, The Day That Kevin Came) finds fresh satire and contemporary reflections in this rarely-seen comic gem.

Pre show lecture Lucie Sutherland and Jo Robinson from the University of Nottingham will be giving a lecture on the work of Henrik Ibsen on Wednesday 25 May at 6pm. Places are free but limited, call the Box office on 0115 941 9419 to book your seat.

The Trial By Franz Kafka, adapted by Steven Berkoff

Thursday 28 – Saturday 30 April at 7.30pm Tickets: £5 (£4)

It is half past eight and Josef K normally has his breakfast at half past eight. But today his world is twisted and deformed as he is arrested and dragged into the uncertain purgatory of the justice system. Josef K must seek help amongst a sinisterly-peculiar freak show of

characters. From the spider-like helping hand of Huld to the giddily incomprehensible Titorelli, K must attempt to weave a narrative through his vague destiny. That is easier said than done in a world of absolute order without logic, punishment without crime, and people without humanity.

Seize the opportunity to see the award-winning Danish Dance Theatre on their UK debut tour. Choreographer, Tim Rushton, combines the classical lines of ballet with the power of modern dance to create a hauntingly visual performance. Rushton has chosen three pieces to bring to the UK; Enigma, CaDance and Kridt. Enigma, with music by Mathias Friis-Hansen, layers powerful, beautiful and sensual duets as the dancers strive to understand each other.

In contrast CaDance is an exciting testosterone-fuelled competition between five athletic male dancers, driven by Andy Pape’s thrilling score performed live on stage by two drummers. Kridt is the most theatrical of the three pieces and portrays the story of one man’s life through the eyes of the women who loved him. Kridt, which translates as ‘chalk’, is based on Peter Vasks’ exquisite suite for strings Musica Adventus and the texts of Ecclesiastes.

What makes you ‘you’? Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) last thrilled Nottingham Playhouse audiences in 2005 with their sold out production of The Age of Unbeauty. In this extraordinary new creation, Be Your Self, Stewart situates the body at the centre of his choreography revealing the precarious stability of the concept of self. The ADT dancers are transformed into erupting,

powerful, creative entities projecting a mountain of startling physical images and impressions set to a wildly unpredictable, cartoonish, electronic score. Collaborating with visionary New York architects Diller, Scofidio and Renfro, Stewart wields dance, spoken text, video graphics and architectural design to collapse the underpinnings of who we think we are. Stewart’s intelligent, audacious choreographic approach has taken Australian Dance Theatre to the forefront of international contemporary dance.

By Michael PinchbeckWhen legendary Australian batsman Donald Bradman notched up over 1000 runs for his team and returned home bearing The Ashes, England was determined to avenge the defeat. By the time the England team set sail for Australia two years later, under the captaincy of Douglas Jardine, a new line of bowling attack had been devised – Bodyline.Jardine chose Harold Larwood, a coal miner from Nottinghamshire for the job and as a result of this new bowling technique, England were victorious– but at what cost? Politicians took their stand and Jardine and Larwood became the two most hated men in Australia.Directed by Giles Croft.
