CHENNAI (TOI): With no sign of an end to anti-nuclear protests in the state, the Tamil Nadu government’s handsoff approach to the agitation against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project ( KKNPP) is now beginning to draw veiled criticism from various sections including business lobbies and commentators.

In the initial days of the agitation,

chief minister Jayalalithaa met a team of protestors and got a resolution passed in the assembly, urging the Centre to stop work at the site till people’s apprehensions were allayed. State ministers also met protestors at Idinthakarai, the venue of the stir. Since then, two committees, one central and another appointed by the state, have sought to engage the protestors in negotiations. However, not a single senior official from TN is directly involved in the talks.

Talks between scientists on the central panel and the protestors are being facilitated by the Tirunelveli district collector and the state police

has deployed personnel around Kudankulam to provide some security. But in recent weeks, the state government has increasingly ceased to step up its participation to break the impasse. This despite the fact that once KKNPP’s first phase is operational, TN will receive about 950 MW immediately to bridge a growing power deficit. Political observers pointed out,

“though everybody in the state, including industrialists, is urging the protestors to end the stir, the state government and the chief minister have not made any decisive move to address the issue.”

A senior official, on condition of anonymity, pointed out that during a recent visit, the Atomic Energy Commission chairman and Department of Atomic Energy secretary Srikumar Baneree could meet only the Tamil Nadu chief secretary and not the chief minister to discuss the issue.

anti-nuclear activists will embark on a yatra from Madurai to the site on Thursday.

The activists, under the aegis of Chennai Solidarity Group for Kudankulam Struggle started their journey from Madurai on November 10 and stopped at towns and villages en route to Kudankulam to explain “the terrible environmental

health effects of nuclear energy.”At Kudankulam, they conducted

a national seminar titled “National Conference on Safety issues at Nuclear installations in India.”

A photo-exhibition, depicting the horrors of nuclear energy was also on display. The yatra has been organized by National Alliance of Anti-Nuclear Movements.

Some of those attending the yatra are nuclear physicist Suvrat Raju, Prof Banwarilal Sharma, mathematician and former president of the International Congress of Mathematics and Thomas Kochery of National Fishworkers Forum, the release said.

Kingfisher Airlines Loss Doubles to Rs.469 Crore

MUMBAI (Hindu): In a challeng-ing quarter for the aviation industry, Vijay Mallya-promoted Kingfisher Airlines has announced a doubling of its losses for the September 2011 quarter at Rs.469 crore against a loss of Rs.231 crore in the same period last year.

The operating revenue for the quar-The operating revenue for the quar-The operating revenue for the quarter was up 7 per cent at Rs.1,528 crore against Rs.1,383 crore. According to the company, the momentum has continued with demand growth of 20 per cent during the quarter. “Howev-er, it has been matched by a capacity growth of 20 per cent, putting pres-sure on yields for the industry. This has been coupled with a more than 35 per cent rise in fuel price as compared to the same quarter last year.”

While Kingfisher’s passenger load factor was higher than the industry’s at 77 per cent (72 per cent for indus-try), it reported an operating loss of Rs.271 crore against an operating profit of Rs.55 crore in the same period last year. This was reflected on the operating margin too with the company reporting a negative margin of 16.7 per cent against a positive 3.6 per cent in the year-ago period.

Its domestic operations saw a 5 per cent increase in revenues at Rs.1,145 crore but it reported an operating loss of Rs.195 crore against an operating profit of Rs.108 crore. Its interna-tional operations reported an operat-ing loss of Rs.76 crore against a loss of Rs.53 crore on a 11 per cent higher operating revenue of Rs.383 crore (Rs.345 crore).

Addressing the media, Vijay Mal-lya, Chairman, Kingfisher Airlines, said that the environment in the Indian aviation sector was a high cost one. “It is highly taxed and restrictive for investments and this is affecting vi-ability of the industry. The industry is in serious trouble and we are not worse off than anyone else and are better off than several others but the government should address these systemic issues.”

On international expansion plans, Mr. Mallya said, “There is no need for international expansion as we plan to join the One-World Alli-ance next quarter where members including Cathay Pacific, American Airlines and British Airways use partners’ routes to shore up networks. However, we are going to improve utilisation on our A-320 and A-321 by flying to neighbouring countries and within India.”

Mr. Mallya also said that Airbus had confirmed the rescheduling of delivery of the A-380 aircraft ordered by Kingfisher as “the environment is not conducive for the next five years for A-380 operations in India.” Kingfisher has ordered for five A-320s this year with the first of them coming in December but all may not be delivered this year.

During the period, the airline has undertaken several projects to im-prove its operational performance and also initiated a large-scale aircraft reconfiguration at minimal cost on the existing fleet.

According to Sanjay Agarwal, CEO, Kingfisher Airlines, “we are in discussions with various banks to reduce interest cost without further restructuring and have decided to focus on a single segment of full service airline. We have also dropped unprofitable flights in an effort to con-solidate our network. We appointed SBI Caps to confirm the long-term viability of the company.”

By rajrajr Kaj Kaj anwar Kanwar KThe mysterious disappearance

of Bhanwari Devi, a beautiful Rajasthan auxiliary nurse, is becoming murkier with each passing day. It has also put the spotlight on several high profile political leaders with the principal suspec t Mahipa l Maderna admitting his close relationship with the missing nurse. Bhanwari (36) had suddenly disappeared on September 1 and has not been seen since. Maderna, a minister in the Congress government in Rajasthan, was sacked a couple of weeks ago and has been intensely interrogated for two days by Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI). He skipped interrogations the third day claiming that he had developed chest pain and was admitted to Mathura Das Mathur Hospital in Jodhpur.

The investigating agency has now announced a reward of rupees five hundred thousand to anyone who would give reliable information about Bhanwari’s whereabouts.

Maderna’s involvement has now become a matter of public domain with several TV news channels running a CD showing Maderna in compromising position with the missing nurse. CBI claimed that it had the CD in its possession, and had seized phone records, a camcorder and a computer that could be hiding vital clues to the disappearance of Bhanwari Devi. CBI has now also sought the help of Central Forensic Laboratory and private computer experts to help decipher the crucial evidence.

Another key suspect Congress MLA Malkhan Singh Bishnoi, and Maderna’s wife Lila were also interrogated by CBI. At one time, the investigating agency interrogated both Maderna and Vishnoi together. This joint interrogation led the two suspects accusing each other.

The Rajasthan high court, which is hearing a habeas corpus petition by Bhanwari Devi’s husband Amarchand who has alleged that

his wife had been abducted at the behest of Maderna, permitted the investigating agency to conduct brain mapping of Sohan Lal, another accused in this case. CBI had also earlier questioned Indira Bishnoi, sister of Congress legislator Malkhan Singh Bishnoi. Agency sources stated that Indira had alleged that Bhanwari Devi wanted some sort of “settlement” with Maderna and had even approached Badri Ram Jakhar, a Pali MP, in this regard.

The developments took a new turn with the high court ordering forensic tests on some aides of Maderna. CBI also requested high

court’s consent for conducting brain mapping of Sohan Lal, another accused in this case.

Meanwhile, the situation in Jodhpur became tense on Saturday when Maderna’s wife Lila openly accused the media, particularly the TV channels for holding “a media trial” without any evidence. She also called the media personnel “unprofessional” and added that they “should instead become vegetable vendors”. On Sunday, supporters of Maderna ran amuck and attacked reporters and also OB vans of two news channels outside the hospital in which Maderna is admitted.

CBI had on Thursday (November 10) had filed a status report on its investigations before a bench of Justices Govind Mathur and NK Jain in Jodhpur naming Maderna as one of the accused. Bhanwari Devi’s husband Amarchand has

filed a habeas corpus petition in the court alleging that his wife had been abducted at the behest of Maderna. The court on Monday (November 14) admonished CBI for not doing a thorough job and asked it to expedite its probe in the case, adding that the agency’s credibility was at stake. The court gave this instruction after it had examined the report earlier submitted by the CBI on Friday. It told the agency to submit another “progress report” on November 24.

Meanwhile, speculation is rife about the possible location where the CD, showing Maderna with Bhanwari was shot. The background shown in the CD could provide a clue to the actual place. The investigating team has created a chart of the wall in the background, texture, light, color and the variety of furniture in the room where the CD was shot. It is believed that the place could possibly be a guest house in Ajmer where Maderna was a regular visitor. Another source revealed that Bhanwari Devi was known to frequently visit the district council’s office and was in touch with almost all local political leaders.

It was Bhanwari Devi’s beauty that had attracted the attention and evil eye of all and sundry including ministers and other influential politicians. Bhanwari too flaunted this god-given asset and also perhaps en cashed it. The controversial CD that showed her with Maderna was a big weapon in her hand. It was perhaps this explosive CD that scared Maderna, leaving him no options but to take some drastic steps. Bhanwari Devi, according to some other sources, was keen on contesting elections to the state assembly and could have used the CD to blackmail Maderna.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Delivers a Baby Girl(TOI) Based on her numbers, numerologist

reveals the personality traits of the newborn in Bachchan family and suggests her name should start with K.

Its celebration time in Bachchan household with the arrival of the new member in their family. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan delivered a baby girl today, November 16, 2011.

Like any other well-wisher of Amitabh Bachchan and his family, which practically comprises the whole of country today, numerologist Bhavikk Sanghvi is as much elated and conveys his best regards to the proud parents and grandparents. He was perhaps the only numerologist who had predicted that it would be a baby girl for Abhi-Ash.

“The girl is born on 16 which makes her number 7 (Ketu) person that is ruled by number 2 (moon). Her sun-sign is Scorpio - number 9 ( Mars). Her destiny number is 4 (Rahu) “, says Bhavikk revealing all the numbers associated with the newborn. “Her rashi is Mithun and so her name should ideally start with the alphabet ‘k’”.

“Her ascendant is Sagittarius (Dhanu) so by personality she should be a sensitive child always in need of love”, he adds. Needless to say, she will be pampered by the Bachchans. “I would advice the parents to make her wear

gomed (hessonite) after five years of age. As far as her career is concerned, she should be good at creative, media or artistic field like her parents”. “She has a fantastic travel line and should be lucky in terms of property investment. However she should avoid any partnership business”, signs off Bhavikk.

Well, we wish good health to the mother and the newborn and loads of happiness to the Bachchan family.

After Sheila, Katrina becomes Chikni Chameli(TOI) Katrina Kaif’s first official item

song name is out ‘Chikni Chameli’. After her famous item number ‘Sheila ki

jawaani’ that had become a rage, now she is all set for a yet another sizzling performance in Karan Johar’s Agneepath. Karan Johar recently tweeted, “Katrina Kaif is doing a full on item song in Agneepath....its a total

3333November 18, 2011SPORTS Dhoni’s Team is The Best Ever, feels Kapil Dev

Tendulkar Completes 22 years in International Cricketyears in International Crickety

DURBAN (TOI): Former India captain Kapil Dev feels that the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side is the best ever team in the history of Indian cricket.

“Without any doubt, I would say that this is the best Indian team ever,” said Kapil, who is here to take part in the second edition of the World Cricket Legends - 15-a-side cricket tournament in the wild between former India and South African players, organised by Beyond Boundaries.

“When you have so many records, so much experience and have done so well, you can’t complain about anything at all,” he added.

Kap i l f ee l s t ha t one should never compare two generations and said that we should always believe that our next generation is better than the previous one. That’s mantra of moving forward, the legendary all-rounder opined.

“You can never compare a son with his father. The fathers never had the modern day gadgets that their sons are used to nowadays. Yet they worked tirelessly to get everything for their kids. That’s why it is unfair to compare two generations. But you always want your son to be better than you,” he said.

“The next generation has always been and will be better than the previous one. If it is not then we aren’t moving forward as a society. If you at all have to compare, I

would say this team is far better.”Kapil, meanwhile, denied that

there is any extra pressure on Sachin Tendulkar to score his hundredth international ton, stating that the champion batsman has been

handling pressure since he made his debut.

“When was Tendulkar not under pressure? Since age of 16, we have been putting pressure on him like comparing him with Sir Don Bradman and all that. He is always under pressure. I wonder if he would be able to perform if you don’t write about him, talk to him and there is no crowd.

“I think he can only play under pressure. And the good part is, he is 99 not out. He likes to take pressure,” he said.

Kapi l a lso expressed his disappointment at how someone as promising as Irfan Pathan went off the boil.

“I think there is too much pressure. Look at (Irfan) Pathan. I thought he was coming up too well

Kapil Dev former Indian cricket team captain is all praise for Dhoni’s team “ it is the best cricket team to with much experience” to boot

but suddenly he went off the boil. I thought he was moving in the right direction, perhaps, in today’s world there is too much pressure and too much hard work. I don’t think the players can handle themselves. It is

tough life.”Still out of favor from

the BCCI after he decided to switch favours for the unsanctioned ICL, Kapil wants the cricket establishment to approach him rather than him reaching out to them.

“The only thing is that the young players and the BCCI have to come back to me. They have to come back if they think they can learn something. It is up to the BCCI to sort these things out,” he insisted.

Kapil recently had came out in the support of the proposed Sports Development Bill and insisted that he would always stand for it.

“The Sports Bill is speaking about the betterment of sports in the country. Forget about whether I have an advantage or a disadvantage. If it is good for sports but not personally for me then my personal liking should not come before the country. That’s what I believe.”

He feels that it’s not something unreasonable to ask BCCI to be counted as a National Sports Federation (NSF).

“If it is for the betterment of sports we should all support it. Are we asking for anything unreasonable or unethical? No, we are not. If I am not ready to be accountable then it is sad,” said Kapil.

KOLKOTTA(The Hindu): Iconic batsman Sachin Tendulkar achieved yet another milestone in his illustrious career as he completed a marathon 22 years in international cricket on Tuesday.

India is waiting for his coveted 100th international century, and his completion of 22 years will be regarded as a remarkable achievement in world cricket.

It was on this very day in 1989, a 16—year—old prodigy walked into bat at the Karachi National

Stadium facing the likes of Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and another debutant Waqar Younis.

Although he managed only 15 in his debut innings, the maturity with which he faced the scorching pace of Akram and Younis made everyone sit up and take notice. Even the likes of Imran Khan and Javed Miandad knew that a star was born that very day.

The 38—year—old Tendulkar is playing his 182nd Test match - more than any player in the history

of the game. To go with 182 Tests, he has played 453 ODIs as well.

The master batsman has almost all the batting records in his kitty including being the first man to score a double hundred in an ODI. He has so far scored 15,048 Test runs (before the Kolkata Test started) and 18,111 runs in ODIs.

He scored 38 in the first innings of the current Test against the West Indies, and it looks unlikely that he would get another chance to bat in the match to reach the historic

milestone at this venue.Tendulkar now lies ninth in the

list of players with the longest careers in Test cricket. English all—rounder Wilfred Rhodes holds the unique record of representing his country for 30 years 315 days from June 1, 1899 to April 12, 1930.

Englishmen Dennis Brown Close and Frank Wooley occupy the second and third place respectively. Close played Test cricket for 26 years 356 days, while Wooley’s career spanned 25 years 13 days.Sachin Tendulkar

Kingfisher would like to take the opportunity to clarify its position on the following points:

• The airline industry in India is going through a tough period due to high costs and lower yields. This is evident by the unprecedented losses recently reported. To counter these pressures and leveraging its strengths, Kingfisher decided to rationalize network, drop unprofitable flights and expedite its fleet reconfiguration. This initiative will improve the long term profitability of the airline.

• The reconfiguration initiative will require up to 3 aircraft to be out of service over the next three months at any one time for this exercise to be completed. It will reduce the number of fleet configurations from 7 to 3, improving operational flexibility. This initiative will add more seats to the fleet, improving revenue production of each aircraft.

• The actions over the last few weeks have been to implement the above strategy in a pre-determined and well-controlled fashion.

• Kingfisher Airlines has rationalized its network to offer maximum and seamless connectivity. As per the revised schedule, it will offer 300 daily flights connecting 54 cities as compared to its previous schedule of 340 flights. The revised schedule is being loaded in the system and guests can confidently continue booking Kingfisher flights.

• Our guests remain our top priority. We reached out to all our guests who were booked on these cancelled flights to re-accommodate them either on our or other airline flights. We offered full refund to those who so desired. We apologize to the guests who might have been inconvenienced.

• No Kingfisher flights have been canceled due to lack of pilots or other staff. The attrition of 100 pilots did not happen overnight. Kingfisher has sufficient number of pilots and a robust pipeline of new pilots to continue to operate its scheduled flights.

• The CAR140 requires DGCA to be informed if there are flight cancel-lations for a longer period of time. While we were finalizing the plans, we only announced these cancellations until November 19th. We did not feel the need for informing DGCA. In hindsight, we should have informed them and we apologized to them for the same.

• Kingfisher has credit terms or payment arrangements with all its vendors which we are complying with.

• Kingfisher has not made any bail out request to the government. We have only asked our banks for an increase in limits due to significant increase in operating costs caused by increase in fuel prices and rupee devaluation.

• There has been a few days delay for the last 2-3 months in payment of employee salaries. However, all employees have been paid in the month the salaries were due.

• Kingfisher does not see any risk to its future or long term viability. The whole Indian Aviation Industry is struggling due to high costs and lower yields. We are no exception. Like any other prudent business we are taking steps to improve our financial performance.

Statement from Sanjay Aggarwal, CEO, Kingfisher Airlines Ltd.
