We were blessed with beautiful weather for the Oyster Roast and Silent Auction. What is the IRA Charitable Rollover? A Tip that May Be Very Helpful!At the end of 2015, federal legislation was passed making the IRA direct charitable rollover gift option permanent. The law allows “senior” charitably-minded individuals a golden opportunity to make gifts directly from their IRAs and exclude the amount of their gift from gross income. This is a wonderful way to fulfill a pledge to the Church of the Advent or to make a gift to the Advent Foundation. Persons over the age of 70 ½ may make a gift directly from their IRA, which counts toward their required minimum distribution, without including the distribution as personal income.
Criteria: • You must be 70 ½ or older when the transfer is made. • The transfer must go directly from your IRA administrator to your church. • Rollover gifts are limited to $100,000 per taxpayer per year. If married, and each spouse has an IRA, then each may gift up to $100,000. • The gift counts toward your IRA required minimum distribution. • The distribution is not reported as income, so there is no adverse income tax effect. • Gifts must be outright: not to donor-advised funds, charitable remainder trusts, or for charitable gift annuities. Ladybug Release: The children had a role in saving the crepe myrtle and pecan trees on the church grounds prior to their Young Families outing to Sky Top Orchard. Nearly 1500 ladybugs were released to eradicate the aphid infestion. Thanks to Mickey Pierce of the Archives Committee for leading the children in a great natural science lesson prior to the big release. We are grateful to Melissa Johnson who invited the children to participate! They were fascinated and loved taking part in this unique activity.

Outreach Opportunity: TOTAL Ministries Thanksgiving BagsCome help pack 55 bags of Thanksgiving food for TOTAL Families on Wednesday, November 6, following our Wednesday night dinner. Thanks to a healthy competition between the Men’s and Women’s Bible studies (women won!!), we have raised enough money to buy food for 50 bags. And with the support of Girl Scouts and Scouts of Pack 1, we have collected food for additional bags. This outreach-sponsored event will be a meaningful way for families to begin the season of Thanksgiving. We hope to see you there!
Operation Magi Christmas 2019 at Mary H. Wright Elementary SchoolThe leaves are beginning to fall and our wonderful Advent Christmas project, Operation Magi, is just around the corner. This season, Advent families will again have the opportunity to shine Christ’s light on students at Mary H. Wright Elementary School. Operation Magi is looking for volunteers to adopt MHW students (ranging in age from pre-K to 5th grade) and purchase ONLY three gifts for each student. The gifts will include a set of clothing, a book, and one toy/item from the child’s wish list. MHW shopping lists will be available in mid-November and all gifts must be bought and delivered to the Parish & Community Life Building by Sunday, December 15. Let Operation Magi be an expression of your joy this Christmas season! Participating provides a wonderful teaching moment for young families or a terrific collective effort for a Sunday School class, Bible Study, Scout Troop, Fellowship Group, or Supper/Book Club. Parents in Community - Effects of Vaping Sunday November 3, 9:10-10am
Dr. Joseph Boscia, pulmonologist and internal medicine doctor, will be with us to discuss vaping and lung injury. This epidemic has received national attention and we are delighted to have a local expert coming to the Advent to educate and equip parents.
Women’s Bible Study with the Rev. Paula Griffin - Thursdays at 9am in the PCLC We will begin a slightly-early Advent focus on November 7 using Light of the World: A Beginner’s Guide to Advent. This is a brand-new study by Amy-Jill Levine where she explores the biblical texts surrounding the story of Jesus. She specifically invites us into conversations around the connections of the Gospel stories to the Old Testament, the role of women in first-century Jewish culture, the importance of Mary’s visitation, and the revolutionary implications of Mary’s Magnificat, the census, the stable and the star of Bethlehem. We will pick up the N.T. Wright study when we resume in January. Both books are available from Mtr. Paula Griffin.
Advent Devotional Books Devotional books written by Advent parishioners will be available Sunday, November 24. Be sure and get yours! Special appreciation to Carolyn Roberts for overseeing this project, to Jeanelle Smith for design, and to all the many members who contributed. What a Joy-filled resource!
Advent Wreath Making Sunday, December 1 and Wednesday, December 4
There will be two opportunities to make Advent wreaths – Sunday morning, December 1, from 9:10-10am in the gym, and Wednesday, December 4, following our Wednesday night dinner. Keep in mind that Adult Sunday School classes will be offered. Adults can choose either opportunity!
NOVEMBER 2019 YOUTH & ADULT FORMATION 7 We would like to thank everyone who came in support of our Meet and Greet Sunday, October 13. We are so thankful for the support that you have all given us! Our growth spiritually and numerically continues to grow in all aspects of The Episcopal Youth Community (EYC). At Chick-fil-A prayer breakfast we are gaining new students each week and are so thankful.
Please note that our schedule for EYC Sunday nights has changed as Middle School will meet from 5 - 6:30pm and High School 6 - 7:30pm. During the overlap we will share a meal together as well as feeding our souls with a devotion and compline. There are many ways to get involved and no matter your age there’s a place and a need for you within EYC.
The Confirmation Students of EYC will be traveling to Lake Bowen November 1 – 2 for an intensive retreat to better understand the importance of confirmation and come closer to God and one another. Please be praying for all our students and chaperones involved in this weekend trip.
We also would like to share our excitement about the upcoming Winter Retreat that is open to Middle and High School. The retreat will be held on February 21-23, 2020, and we will be accepting the first 40 students. Be sure to contact us for more information.

Children and Young Family Fall Highlights The beginning of fall has been especially fun for the children & young family ministries. We enjoyed our cooler temperatures during the Young Families outing to Sky Top Orchard on October 12. At the orchard, the children picked multiple varieties of apples to take home, played in the Bamboo Forest, and took rides on the Bee Train. We had a great day, and it was made even sweeter with a snack of Sky Top’s famous apple doughnuts! A big thank you goes out to Sandy Battocchio who planned this event!
Wednesday Night Activities Children and young families have especially enjoyed our various activities, classes, and speakers during the month of October.On October 2, the students in grades 2nd-5th took part in the Communion class led by Fr. Ned in the church while children in grades 4K-1st made paper roll pumpkins - crafty, fall decorations that will surely be displayed at home for many years to come. On October 16, Fr. Ned called BINGO, and we had an exciting night playing with parishioners of all ages. Everyone was a winner with a JOY-filled evening spent in fellowship and fun! On November 6, we will join the adults and pack Thanksgiving bags for TOTAL Ministries. Nursery care will be available by reservation.
Thanksgiving Crafts for 4k-5th Grades - Sunday, November 3 We will have a combined Sunday School class for grades 4k-5th in Room 103. Everyone will take part in making a Thanksgiving craft that all will enjoy. Parents, paint will be involved so dress your children in appropriate clothing. Smocks will also be available for children to wear. We will send home their Thanksgiving creation on Sunday, November 10, because additional drying and laminating time will be needed.
Go, Team Advent! The 2019-2020 basketball season is firing up for the th St. Paul's League. The teams will begin practices the week of November 10, and games will take place on December 7 & December 14. The teams will break for Christmas holidays then resume in January. We look forward to an exciting season with lots of new faces joining as players and coaches.

All children are encouraged to participate! Please email [email protected] if your child(ren) would like to be in the cast. We will rehearse in the church on Saturday, December 21, at 10am. It is very important that all children are present as this is the only rehearsal for the pageant.
There will be no Sunday School for 4K-5th grade on December 22 and December 29.
