Base price (incl. destination): $28,250Type: Four-door tall wagonBase Engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (190)Optional engines (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4,turbocharged (264); 3.3-litre DOHC V6 (290)Layout: Front engine, front- /all-wheel-drive

Overall: Would you like your Santa Fe in regular or super sized? For 2013, you get your choice of both.

Drivetrain: Two four-cylinder engines and one V6 available, depending on model selection; six-speed automatics are standard on all versions, along with AWD availability.

Well, two sizes of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe are on the menu. Haven’t we seen this concept used

somewhere else? Indeed we have. Mitsubishi recently took this direction for the 2011 model year with its RVR, which is a shortened version of the Outlander. On a grander scale, General Motors does the same with its Tahoe/Suburban big rigs and a number of minivans once offered similar long/short choices. For 2013 the shorter-wheelbase five-passenger Santa Fe Sport, arrives first, followed by the longer (by 22 centimetres) seven-passenger Santa Fe in early calendar 2013. The bigger Santa Fe is heftier than the Sport by more than 150 kilograms, which explains why it’s only available with a 290-horsepower 3.3-litre V6 that replaces the previously optional 274-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. Conversely, the Sport comes with a base 190-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder, or optional 264-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. In all cases the only transmission is a six-speed automatic with manual shift controls. Hyundai will let you add its latest all-wheel-drive setup with any Santa Fe you select. The system includes Torque Vectoring Corner Control (TVCC) that monitors driving conditions and can instantaneously direct the correct amount of power or braking force to any single wheel. TVCC assists in slippery conditions and provides added precision when negotiating turns. The Santa Fe features plenty of standard content plus unexpected treats, including Driver Selectable Steering Mode with Normal, Comfort (reduces steering effort by 10 per cent) and Sport (increases effort by the same amount) settings. Turbo models add performance suspension components (stiffer shocks and stabilizer bars), 19-inch wheels (17s are standard), fancier gauge cluster, push-button start and heated front seats.

Base price (incl. destination): $17,450 (sedan); $21,450 (Coupe); $20,650 (GT)Type: Mid-size four-door sedan/hatch,two-door coupeBase Engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (148) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive

Overall: Hot-selling Elantra sedan now joined by two-door Coupe and hatchback GT body styles.

Drivetrain: how does 4.9 l/100 km on the highway sound?

Hyundai has been readying itself to better take on competitors such as Honda by expanding the

successful Elantra line to include a two-door coupe and four-door hatchback. The newcomers share the swoops-and-swirls theme that’s visible along the Elantra sedan’s flanks while mimicking the more aggressive front-end style of the Veloster Turbo. Blacked-out grilles and unique wheel designs are another area of differentiation, but from the back, the Coupe is awfully similar to the sedan and identical in both interior and exterior dimensions. The GT is slightly shorter, but its expanded cargo area allows for 23 cubic-feet (650 litres) of room with the rear seats up (compared with 15 — 425 litres — for the sedan/Coupe) and more than 50 (1,400 litres) with them folded flat. The Elantra’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine puts out 148 horsepower (145 horsepower for states that require partial-zero-emissions tuning), and is at 6.8 l/100 km in the city and a seriously impressive 4.9 l/100 km on the highway with the standard six-speed manual transmission (6.9/4.9 with optional six-speed automatic). All three Elantras use the same ultra-modern dashboard and cabin design and it’s a genuine work of art. Base Elantra L sedan models include the usual power-operated assortment of features plus a six-speaker audio system, but no air conditioning. The GT hatchback joins in at the GL trim level (which gets air conditioning) while the Coupe joins in one more notch up at the GLS level, which means the Coupe has the highest starting price of the three. After GLS, the sedan tops out at the Limited, while the GT and the Coupe end at SE, which are just as loaded up as sedan Limited is.

Overall: Hyundai has made the nimble Veloster more fun by adding power, big wheels, a big grille and big exhaust in a new Turbo model for 2013.

Drivetrain: Fuel-sipping 1.6-litre four-cylinder mated to a six-speed manual transmission or optional dual-clutch automated manual gearbox; Turbo adds, well, a turbo, to reach 201 horsepower.

Is the three-door Veloster the definition of divisive? Sure. It’s a love-it-or-hate-it proposition, but more

will love it this season as the dramatic-looking Turbo has finally arrived. The front-wheel-drive hatchback plays in a different sandbox than Hyundai’s other refreshed performance car — the Genesis Coupe — where affordability and fuel economy are as important as eye-catching styling. The Veloster’s 138-horsepower 1.6-litre engine is one of the car’s main sources of criticism: something that hot looking shouldn’t be so slow . . . It’s just OK with the six-speed manual transmission but the optional six-speed automated dual-clutch transmission (DCT) is tuned more for economy than performance. Specifying the DCT adds a selectable Active Eco mode that adjusts the computer-regulated engine and transmission mapping to maximize fuel economy. For those seeking more adrenaline, the new Veloster Turbo uses the same four-cylinder engine but adds a turbocharger and intercooler to bring the magic number of 201 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but Turbos use a regular six-speed automatic, optionally. Visually, the Turbo gets a more aggressive front end with a larger blacked out grille, a different hood, lower ground effects, a revised rear bumper and a gigantic (yet almost annoyingly quiet) twin exhaust poking out back. Most of the interior bits are shared between the two, meaning seating for four passengers plus easy-to-read gauges and control-panel knobs for the driver. The base Veloster at $21,000 is actually quite loaded up with heated front seats, air conditioning, pushbutton start, power windows and door locks, power heated outside mirrors and a backup camera. The Turbo, for $6,500 over the base car adds 18-inch wheels, panoramic sunroof, navigation and sport-tuned steering.

Overall: No longer the car you have to settle for, the stylish Accent is a bright entry in its class.

Drivetrain: Standard 1.6-litre four-cylinder with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

Let’s just say that the long wait between generations of Accents was worth it. Released last year as a four-door sedan and hatchback, it’s certainly another game-changing model for Hyundai, one that presents a formidable challenge to such pack leaders as the Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta and Mazda2, et al. The sedan’s sheetmetal has a similar look to that of the mid-size Sonata and compact Elantra models, especially the deeply sculpted crease extending along the doors and fenders and ending with a hiked-up rear deck. The same is essentially true for the wagon-like hatchback, although its sweeping roofline, curvaceous liftgate and dominating tail lamps make it the most practical Accent and arguably the best looking of the two. Both share the same platform that extends the distance between the front and rear wheels by about seven centimetres over the previous model, which is important real estate for maxing out both leg and knee room. In terms of stowage, Hyundai claims the hatchback bests all comers with the second-row in place, although the better packaged Honda Fit still enjoys significant space-race superiority when measuring maximum volume with the rear seat folded flat. The Accent’s 1.6-litre engine produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. Just one year after launch, Hyundai is already adding new standard features including heated side mirrors, cloth (instead of plastic) door inserts and remote keyless entry. The base four-door L with the manual gearbox includes just the basics plus a full suite of safety gear. Stepping up to the GL gets you air conditioning, cruise control, new heated seats and the usual powered accessories, while the top-level GLS takes its full-load role seriously by adding climate control for 2013. Leather seats and navigation system are missing from the factory-installed option list, indicating that Hyundai is keeping the Accent’s trim levels as close to the bone as possible and in line with the competition.

B4 | CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR & NORTH ISLAND MIDWEEK | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2012

Overall: It’s the king of them all; Camry retains its top spot among intermediate sedans with the right mix of style, comfort and a reputation for quality that’s still the envy of the industry.

Drivetrain: Fuel-efficient four- and six-cylinder engines, plus an outstanding gas-electric hybrid that nails it for price and impressive fuel economy.

Back in 2011, some pundits suggested that Toyota’s glory days were behind it, given the difficulties experienced as a result of the natural disasters in Japan. The following year those same critics would be proven dead wrong as the automaker rebounded to reclaim its spot near the top of the automotive world. And vehicles such as the class-leading Camry led the way. The Camry’s 2012 redesign included a pointier front end, chiseled front fenders and an accent crease extending across the doors and fenders. The windshield area has been increased for improved visibility. In terms of overall size, it’s a wash, although Toyota claims there’s now slightly more passenger space resulting from cabin-layout adjustments. Inside, the organically shaped dashboard presents a layered appearance and lacks the previous model’s droopy look. As well, buyers can now choose from four different upholstery finishes, depending on the model, from woven fabric in base models to leather with faux suede seat covers at the luxury end of the scale. Revisions to the front and rear suspension are designed to keep the Camry more stable in a straight line, sharpen steering response and improve ride comfort. Very little has changed under the hood, although Toyota now rates the standard-issue 178-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder at 8.2 l/100 km in the city and 5.6 highway, improved from 9.0/6.0 for 2011. Meanwhile the carryover 268-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 achieves 9.7/6.4 city/highway l/100 km numbers, compared with 10.6/6.8 in the previous V6 Camry. In the Camry hybrid, however, Toyota has installed a new 156-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, replacing the 147-horse 2.4-litre unit. The 2.5 and its electric-motor assistant produce the same 199 pound-feet of torque as before, but the Hybrid’s net 200 horsepower has increased by 13. More importantly, fuel-economy numbers are expected to improve by at least 30-per cent in city driving. As before, both gasoline engines operate with six-speed automatic transmissions, while the Hybrid uses a continuously variable unit. All Camrys arrive well equipped, although the top-line XLE is understandably loaded to the hilt. The fun-to-drive SE comes with sporty suspension tuning, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, sport front seats and a quicker-shifting transmission that blips (rev matches) the throttle when downshifting, which promotes stability.

According to Car Care Canada...Servicing your car at a dealer is not mandatory to keep your warranty in effect. Maintenance can be done by any qualifi ed service facility or skilled technician. Keep all receipts as proof of completion, and have the service provider fi ll out the Maintenance Record.

CHANGE YOUR OILMost Canadians qualify for severe conditions, which means you drive in stop and go traffi c, in mountainous terrain, or other conditions that increase wear and tear on your vehicle. If so, you may need to have your vehicle serviced more often than usual. Have your Great Canadian Oil Change automotive service technician check the fuel, air and transmission fi lters at the same time and recommend a winter maintenance schedule custom to your vehicle.

COOLING SYSTEMYour cooling system is one of the most important things to watch in your vehicle during the winter time. There are two things -- the concentration of coolant, and the amount. In most parts of Canada, a 50/50 mix of coolant and water keeps the coolant from freezing, lubricates the water pump, and protects the cooling system from corrosion. In very cold areas, it may be necessary to increase the concentration of coolant -- but never more than 70% coolant to 30% water. At Great Canadian Oil Change we can fl ush and refi ll your coolant as needed accordingto your vehicles manufacturers specifi cations.

Base price (incl. destination): $27,800 (hatchback); $28,500 (v); $37,000 (Plug-in)Type: Four-door mid-sized hatchback/wagonEngine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 combined with 27-kilowatt electric motor (134 net)Layout: Front engine, front-wheel-drive

Overall: Despite a new plug-in version and a new Prius v wagon, the gold standard of the hybrid world continues into 2013 with few changes.

Drivetrain: The 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine runs almost as smoothly as the 27-kilowatt electric motor to which it is teamed to produce a combined output of 134 horsepower; a continuously variable transmission (CVT) routes the power to the front wheels; plug-in version uses larger lithium-ion battery pack.

Over the 2012 model year, the Prius family has expanded with addition of a plug-in hybrid and a Prius v

wagon aimed at growing “green” families (a completely separate and much smaller Prius c with its own

powertrain constitutes a separate model). All three use the same gasoline/electric-motor duo comprising a 98-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine teamed with a 27-kilowatt electric motor to produce 134 horsepower. The plug-in uses a larger and more powerful pack of lithium-ion batteries to drive an estimated 24 kilometers on juice alone, with a top speed of 100 km-h. That’s not a huge amount compared to the much longer ranges claimed by the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle (about 160 kilometers) and Chevrolet Volt range-extended hybrid (61 kilometres in electric mode), but the smaller pack allows a full charge in only three hours using a household plug or half that with a 240-volt outlet. The really neat part is that once the battery is drained, the car still acts like a regular Prius, meaning a fuel-economy rating of 3.7 l/100 km city and 4.0 highway. Unfortunately, the plug-in model gains about 50 kilograms in the conversion, and it costs a fair chunk more, starting at $37,000 versus the plain Prius’s $27,800 price tag. Meanwhile the Prius v sits in between at $28,500. The wagon features more rear legroom, shoulder room and a healthier amount of cargo space behind the rear seats. The Prius v comes with some extra-clever storage in the centre console and door pockets. Prius has optional-content menus that are full of technology and gadgets to make driving a hybrid easier, including a unique power moonroof/solar panel that runs an electric fan to cool interior temperature on hot days. Also available is remote air conditioning activation that pre-cools the vehicle for up to three minutes before entering.

Overall: Toyota makes a run at luxurious Ford and GMC rivals with new Platinum package; only five combinations of cab, bed and drive after axing base V8.

Drivetrain: Sole choice in most is the hot-rod 381 horsepower 5.7-litre V8 found in even the most basic work truck; old 4.6-litre V8 only comes in base Double Cab models; six-speed automatic transmission with rear- or four-wheel drive.

Despite finding only a fraction of new homes compared with the domestic automakers, the Tundra

remains a strong contender. That’s helped immensely in 2013 by losing the lower-power base engines and consolidating nearly every Tundra around the top-tuned 381-horsepower 5.7 V8. Only base Double Cab models come with the old 310-horsepower 4.6-litre V8. All models operate using six-speed automatic transmissions, with either rear- or four-wheel drive. Inside, the roomy cabins feature plenty of stowage-space with a computer-laptop-swallowing console plus a two-level glove box. For safety’s sake there are segment-first driver and front passenger knee airbags. Tundras continue to be available in your choice of Regular-cab, extended-length Double Cab and four-door CrewMax with its extra-sized rear doors. Four-wheel-drive is optional, but only if you specify a V8. The no-frills-no-carpet-job-site-only Work Truck Package features a vinyl-covered bench seat, old-school rubber floor mats and a simplified instrument panel. The exterior displays an all-black bumper and grille as well as non-power mirrors. At the opposite end of the spectrum there are numerous dress-up packages that can turn your Tundra into the most full-blown loaded-up rig that’s tailored for the job site. The new Platinum trim level (previously an option package) adds heated and ventilated seats, leather-trimmed surfaces, a navigation system, power moonroof and more. Just how strong is a Tundra? Enough to tow 133,000 kilograms of space shuttle down a stretch of L.A. freeway. If you haven’t already heard about it, check it on Youtube.

Overall: Mazda’s all-new wagon takes its fun-to-drive and fuel-sipping roles seriously.

Drivetrain: A 155-horsepower four-cylinder is part of Mazda’s SkyActiv brand that will eventually be employed on all Mazda vehicles.

If you’re looking to cheap out on fuel while still maintaining the quality of your ride, then the brand new

Mazda CX-5 could be driving right up your alley. Replacing the longstanding Ford Escape-based Tribute wagon, the attractively designed five-passenger CX-5 also fills in for the gone-for-2013 CX-7. The majority of the CX-5’s mechanical bits are promoted under the “Skyactiv” name that made its initial appearance with the 2012 Mazda3. More than simply a marketing slogan, SkyActiv represents a holistic transformation of the powertrain plus various other components that help save fuel in addition to making Mazdas better driving machines. From a chassis and suspension perspective, the automaker’s engineers have attempted to infuse the vehicle with as much MX-5 Miata-type sporty behavior as possible, combined with a highly efficient engine and transmission. The powerplant consists of a high-compression 2.0-litre four-cylinder that, due to its unique design, is able to run on low-grade 87-octane fuel and is lighter by 10 per cent than Mazda’s non-Skyactiv 2.0. Output is rated at 155 horsepower and 150 pound feet of torque, down from the Tribute’s 171/171 levels. However, the smaller-displacement CX-5 is slightly less paunchy so it all evens out a bit. Both sets of numbers are significantly improved over the Tribute and CX-7 and beat league-leaders Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson. Mazda hasn’t scrimped loading up even the most basic CX-5 Sport model. For $24,900, including destination charges, the base GX gets the usual air conditioning and power-operated items, along with cruise control and push-button start. Head up the line and you’ll find the GS and GT model, the latter of which comes with dual-zone climate control and leather seats.

Overall: Mazda’s compact sedan and hatchback wagon carry over with some minor trim and content adjustments.

Drivetrain: The thrifty 155-horsepower 2.0-litre “SkyActiv” engine now enters its sophomore year and is recommended for more for its ability to ignore gas pumps that its sheer performance; both 148-horsepower and 167-horsepower four-cylinder engines return, as does the 263-horse Mazdaspeed3.

Mazda has seen the future and its name is SkyActiv. Available for the first time for the 2012 model year,

the 2.0-litre four-cylinder uses direct-gasoline-injection technology to boost both power and efficiency. Compared to the old 2.0-litre (which carries over on some models) the Skyactiv has 155 horsepower (versus 148) and 148 pound-feet of torque (versus 135). It also wins in fuel economy too, netting 7.1 city and 4.9 highway with the available six-speed automatic transmission, or 7.7/5.0 with the six-speed manual. However SkyActiv is much more than just a powertrain upgrade as the philosophy extends to lowering weight, improving chassis stiffness and steering response. The base sedans and hatchbacks (called the Sport), however, run with the same non-Skyactiv 148-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that’s connected to the five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. Optional is a 167-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder that’s derived from the larger Mazda6 sedan. Here, your transmission picks consist of a slick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox or an optional five-speed automatic. The Mazdaspeed3 hatch is also back sporting its 263-horsepower 2.3-litre turbocharged engine. Here, drivers are treated to sportier looks, wider front fenders, hood scoop, bigger wheels and tighter seats. The price-leader GX is somewhat content starved, but does include power windows and locks, tilt/telescopic steering column and a four-speaker stereo with steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. The GS includes a few more goodies, but you have to move up to the GT or the very well tricked-out Mazdaspeed3 for a reasonably full complement of standard equipment. Skyactiv only comes in GS, while the GT gets the 2.5.

Overall: Unless you need to, why drive a big, hulking minivan when you can save on the purchase price and at the pumps with something a lot more fun to drive.

Drivetrain: A 157-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder connects to a six-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic.

One would assume the Mazda5 carries over unchanged from 2012, as Mazda isn’t talking about its 2013

version . . . at all. There is a possibility, however, that the front bodywork will be swapped out for the more contemporary look inspired by the automaker’s latest Kodo design theme and also fitted with one of the “SkyActiv” powerplants known for their thrifty behavior. We’ll just have to see, but meanwhile the Mazda5’s platform is based on the same one supporting the Mazda3 sedan/hatchback, except stretched by five inches between the front and rear wheels to accommodate three rows of seats. Interestingly, Mazda’s mini minivan is a hair shorter than the Mazda3 sedan, which restricts the amount gear you can cram into the back when all three rows of seats are in use. The highly versatile interior allows you to fold flat either or both of the sliding and reclining second-row buckets, or the 50:50 split folding rear bench to create just the right mix of passengers and cargo. The Mazda5 uses with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder powerplant that’s also employed in the Mazda3 and Mazda6 passenger cars. For its Mazda5 role the 2.5 produces a peak 157 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. The “5” continues to be the only vehicle in its class available with a manual gearbox. A six-speed manual is standard for base models, while a five-speed automatic is optional. Fuel economy is rated at 9.7 l/100 km in the city and 6.8 km on the highway with the manual gearbox. The base GS features the usual air conditioning and power-operated accessories, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, six-speaker audio system, rain-sensing wipers and 16-inch alloy wheels. The GT adds cruise control a rear liftgate spoiler, Bluetooth short-range wireless networking and 17-inch wheels (16-inch alloys are standard). The option sheet contains a power moonroof and leather-covered seats (heated in front). In essence, the Mazda5 is the complete package, minus the size and capacity of its much bigger competitors, of course, but also without their much higher list prices and their bigger appetites at the gas pumps.

Overall: Mazda will be busy clearing out the last of the current crop of its mid-size sedans as a sparkling new-generation model is scheduled for a mid-2013 launch as a 2014 model.

Drivetrain: Base 2.5-litre four-cylinder is the economical choice; the 3.7-litre V6 from the CX-9 tall wagon is optional.

Mazda has big plans for the next Mazda6 four door. That means wowza styling inside and out plus

a couple of four-cylinder SkyActiv-technology powerplants that know how to wring the most out of

every last drop of fuel. For now, however, there’s likely some great deals to be had on remaining 2013-designated models. The base engine is a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder while the optional 272-horse 3.7-litre V6 is borrowed from the CX-9 tall wagon. The four-cylinder can be had with a six-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic, while the V6 works exclusively with a six-speed automatic. As before, the lineup begins with the GS that comes with air conditioning, cruise control, overhead console tilt/telescoping steering wheel, basic audio system and 16-inch wheels. Along with 18-inch wheels, the GT adds climate control, leather seats (heated and power adjustable in front), power moonroof, to name but a few of the upgrades. Buyers can also equip their 6s with a blind-spot monitoring system that detects traffic approaching from either side of the vehicle and cautions the driver by activating a warning buzzer and flashing lights on the exterior mirror. On the option list are 18-inch wheels, a moonroof, Bose-brand audio package and a navigation system that comes with a rear-view camera and seven-inch touch screen.

Base price (incl. destination): $27,600Type: Four-door compact sport-utility vehicleEngine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (185)Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-driveTransmission: Six-speed automaticl/100 km (city/highway): 9.0/6.4 (FWD)

Overall: The CR-V with its new-for-2012 styling and convenience features continues its winning ways for 2013 as one of the most popular entry utes around.

Drivetrain: A 185-horsepower four-cylinder connects to a five-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel-drive is available in all trims.

CR-V devotees might have difficulty spotting the current model that arrived for the 2012 model year

since it closely mirrors the outgoing model in all key exterior dimensions. The overall shape was only moderately tinkered-with, including updated nose and tail sections plus a dramatically shaped rear roof pillar. Honda claims that the CR-V’s shape, along with modifications to the undercarriage to increase airflow, has reduced fuel-robbing aerodynamic drag by eight per cent when compared to the previous CR-V. The interior provides a slightly enlarged passenger area, but at the expense of slightly reduced cargo space. Maximizing the load floor is a snap with the standard Fold-Down Rear Seat that operates by flipping a pair of levers located just inside the tailgate. The rest of the cabin is standard Honda fare, which translates into an uncluttered (albeit plasticky) dashboard, comfy, supportive seats and generously sized storage compartments, including a large floor-console bin that can hold a purse or other bulky items. Under the hood is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 185 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. Fuel-economy is a Honda trademark, but the company claims that by activating the “ECON” button that alters the transmission and air conditioning functions, drivers can save a bit more. As for function, the lift gate is wide and tall while the cargo area extends more than five feet from the rear with the back seat folded. In base LX trim, the CR-V arrives with a significant amount of standard equipment, while the EX includes a power moonroof, fog lights, navigation and a few other niceties. Popping for the EX-L adds leather seat covers, 10-way heated driver’s seat, up-level audio system and access to the optional navigation system. Touring is the top model.

Overall: The Fit is a bit old by small-car standards, but it’s certainly no less agile. Nothing new to report here until its replacement shows up in a year or two.

Drivetrain: Peppy 1.5-litre engine puts out 117 horsepower; five-speed manual transmission is one sweet shifter; five-speed automatic is optional.

The movement toward lower consumption continues to gain momentum and we have excellent little

gas-avoiders such as the Fit to help out. The wedge-shaped body still looks modern and athletic and the large front glass makes the car appear sleeker while providing excellent forward visibility. As one of the biggest cars in its class — in terms of interior volume — there’s an abundance of rear-passenger legroom and enough headroom for high-hatters. The interior features smart-looking gauges and control-panel layout, rich-feeling seat fabrics and 10 beverage holders. The Fit’s flip-up rear seat bench creates a load floor ideal for toting plants and shrubs while the split-folding rear seatback folds flat for transporting cargo. A 117-horsepower 1.5-litre four-cylinder connects to a five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. Base DX Fits feature a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, four-speaker audio system and power windows, locks and mirrors. Moving up to the LX gets you air conditioning and more/better trim items, while the The Sport edition offers up its own front bumper and grille, black headlight surrounds, and different colours for its 16-inch alloy wheels (instead of 15-inch steel wheels and plastic covers). Other Sport content includes cruise control, paddle shifters (automatic-transmission only) and a six-speaker audio system with steering-wheel-mounted buttons.

Overall: The ninth-generation Civic is still one of the most popular small cars on the road; exterior tweaks and interior upgrades are expected for 2013 sedans and coupes due to arrive later in the 2012 calendar year.

Drivetrain: A 140-horsepower four-cylinder carries the ball for most Civic iterations; 110-horsepower gas-electric Hybrid pulls 4.4/4.2 l/100 km city/highway.

Honda got its knuckles rapped shortly after the current-generation Civics arrived for the 2011 model

year. Much of the talk has been about the car’s overly plastic dashboard and general physical sameness with the previous Civics. Honda’s brass has promised to address these issues for 2013, but they have yet to show their cards. However, with Civics selling very well these days, don’t expect any wholesale adjustments. Currently both coupes and sedans feature what Honda calls a “one motion profile” sweeping rooflines plus thin roof pillars that help maximize visibility. Compared with the previous models, the sheetmetal on the sedan and slightly shorter coupe is attached to a stiffer platform that reduces the distance between the front and rear wheels a tad. Despite this, inside, Honda increased shoulder and legroom for front- and rear-seat passengers and modestly enlarged the trunk space. The two-tier instrument panel is slightly more formal and the centrally located tachometer is topped by a speedometer and available five-inch screen that displays key operating and audio selection info. Most Civics operate with a 140-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine. The sporty Si coupe and Si sedan use a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that generates 201 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission and optional five-speed automatic are offered in regular-strength Civics, while a six-speed manual gearbox is exclusive to the Si. On the cleaner, greener front, the Civic Hybrid sedan runs with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder that combines with an electric motor to produce 110 horsepower. Honda claims the Hybrid will achieve a 4.4 l/100 km city rating and 4.2 on the highway, compared to the 7.2/5.0 for the base car with the automatic transmission.

Overall: More of everything Accord buyers have always wanted, but in smaller package.

Drivetrain: All new “Earth Dreams” 2.4-litre four-cylinder makes 185-189 horsepower and features an optional continuously variable transmission. Optional V6 remains optional on coupes and sedans. Both plug-in and conventional hybrids arriving in early-mid 2013.

Buyers expecting the ninth-generation Accord to be bigger and bolder will need to adjust their perspective concerning one of North America’s most successful sedan and coupe lines. The U.S.-built (30 years and counting) Accord maintains a conservative presence, while undergoing a metamorphosis in style, features and running gear. The sedan has shrunk nine centimetres in overall length and loses about two centimetres between the front and rear wheels, while gaining and 1.5 centimetres in width. Concurrently, trunk space increases by five per cent, thanks to a more compact rear suspension. The Accord appears more svelte, with less front overhang. The coupe has undergone a more subtle transformation and remains one of the most appealing models of its type on the road. Inside, the artistically sculpted dashboard is thankfully devoid of knob and switchgear clutter. Drivers will be particularly enamored with the clear and crisp white-on-black centre gauges and the 20-centimetre multi-information display screen. All passengers are treated to more comfort, with front-seaters enjoying more supportive buckets. There’s also an extra 2.5 centimetres of legroom for those in back. The base 2.4-litre four-cylinder (labeled “Earth Dreams”) makes 185 horsepower (189 for the Sport model), up from 177. The optional 278-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 gains a mere seven ponies. A six-speed gearbox on four-cylinder Accord sedans and up-level V6 coupes remains available. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) replaces the five-speed automatic option on all four-cylinder models, but a six-speed automatic remains the only choice for V6 sedans and base V6 coupes. In early 2013, Honda will introduce the Accord plug-in hybrid with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder mated with a 124-kilowatt electric motor for a total of 196 net horsepower. The plug-in can travel up to 24 kilometres on electric-only propulsion, operates on grid juice at up to 60 mph (96 km-h) and has a maximum 800-kilometre range. The clincher is it takes just three hours using120-volt house current to replenish the lithium-ion battery (about 10 minutes for a 50 per cent charge), or about with a 240-volt charger. The plug-in will be followed by a conventional hybrid, giving the Accord a one-two punch in this category.

Base price (incl. destination): $30,200Type: Four-door tall wagonEngine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (260)Layout: Front-engine, two- /four-wheel-driveTransmission: Continuously variable

Overall: Nissan beats a lighter, roomier and sleeker “Path” to your (garage) door; now shifts into the tall wagon class from its previous sport utility perch; fuel economy rises dramatically.

Drivetrain: Both front- and four-wheel-drive versions use a single 260-horsepower V6; gets the job done with the assistance of a continuously variable transmission.

The Tennessee-built Pathfinder had remained virtually untouched since the 2005 model year. A robust body-on-frame chassis made it ideal for boulder-bashing, creek-fording activities. The 2013 edition has undergone a serious weight-loss regimen; shedding about 110 kilograms (145 kilograms on 4x4 units). Its diet included converting to a unitized (frameless) platform shared with Nissan’s Infiniti JX luxury wagon and eliminating the 305-horsepower-V8 option. The base 266-horsepower 4.0-litre V6 has also been dropped. In their place resides Nissan’s one-engine-fits-all 3.5-litre V6 that generates 260 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. The 3.5 is teamed with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that replaces the previous five-speed automatic. Front-wheel-drive versions are rated at 10.5 l/100 km city and 7.7 highway, while four-wheel-drive Pathfinders achieve 10.8/7.9. Nissan’s All-Mode 4x4-i option allows you to select either two- or four-wheel-drive, or engage the Auto setting and let the All-Mode make the call, based on which tire(s) has traction. There is a penalty to be paid for the new Pathfinder’s weight and power decrease in that the maximum towing capacity has been curtailed to 2,300 kilograms from 3,100. The new sheetmetal manages a passing resemblance to the outgoing rig as far as the grille is concerned. But from there, the boxy body of old has given way to gentle, sweeping curves and rounded edges. The new “Path” gains about 13 centimetres in length, 11 centimetres in width and five centimetres between the front and rear wheels. Nissan created a third row reclining seat and a second row with 13 centimetres of fore and aft travel, while a portion of the split-second bench slides forward for easier third-row access, even if there’s a child seat attached. The base Pathfinder S arrives with tri-zone climate control and 14 cup/bottle holders. The SV adds roof rails and a rearview monitor while leather-covered seats, remote engine start and a power liftgate are SL highlights. From there the sky’s the limit where the SL Premium, Platinum and Platinum Premium trim levels are concerned. An up-level sound system, Around View camera, panorama moonroof and a navigation system are on the menu, depending on the depth of your pockets.

Base price (incl. destination): $16,200Type: Four-door sedanEngine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (130)Transmissions: Six-speed manual; CVT(opt.) Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive

Overall: Nissan’s brand new Altima-copying compact is slightly bigger, easier on the eyes and more fuel-efficient to boot.

Drivetrain: One-size-fits-all 130-horsepower four-cylinder engine mates with a six-speed manual transmission, or optional continuously variable unit; no sign of a Spec V performance model.

Nissan has apparently taken a page from other automakers such as Hyundai and has produced a totally

new Sentra that, at first blush, might seem a bit confusing. That’s because the design of the compact four-door so closely mimics the mid-size Altima that, from not too far away, you could easily confuse the two. Both cars share similarly styled grilles and muscular-looking fenders and the sweep of the roofline that ends at a short rear deck also appears familiar. Compared with the outgoing Sentra, the new car is slightly wider, lower and longer and has about the same interior volume, but the optical illusion is that it appears larger than it actually is. Ultimately, there’s nothing about the Sentra to remind you of the old one (cue Martha Stewart’s signature line). Under the hood is a similar story. The new 130-horsepower four-cylinder engine replaces the 2.0-litre 140-horse four-cylinder. But with about 70 kilograms less weight to haul around due to a lightened body structure, you’ll likely never notice the loss in peak power. What you will notice is more cash in your jeans from fewer trips to the gas bar. Sentras are rated at 6.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway. That’s about a 13 per cent improvement compared to the previous rating. Note that to achieve those values you’ll need to step up to the optional continuously variable transmission, as most buyers will do anyway, since the six-speed manual gearbox is standard only on the $16,200 base S model that isn’t all that base. Standard features include air conditioning tilt and telescopic steering column, power windows and door locks and remote keyless entry. Content levels increase as you head up the remaining four trims, topping out at the $24,500 SL that comes with dual-zone climate control, premium sound system, 17-inch wheels (16-inch rims are standard), push-button ignition and a fancier interior. However you’ll need to head beyond that point to add leather-covered seats, a touch-screen navigation system, rearview monitor and other niceties that can take the Sentra as far away from a bare-bones econo-box as you can imagine. There’s no hint that a sporty SE-R model (or Spec V for that matter) with a larger engine and added performance is about to reappear anytime soon.

NISSAN SE

2013

Overall: Although it looks small, Nissan’s compact Rogue is spacious, inexpensive to run and jammed full of “big-car” features.

Drivetrain: Four-cylinder is a gas miser, even in the heavier-than-Sentra Rogue.

The entry-level tall wagon segment grows bigger every year, but one of the safe bets has to be the

handsome Nissan Rogue. Size-wise, the Rogue is in the same compact-ute range as the Hyundai

Tucson, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape and Jeep Patriot. A set of sporty two-tone cloth bucket seats add a touch of elegance and the silver trim surrounding the gauges, doors and floor console stop short of appearing excessively garish. There are also plenty of handy interior features including a built-in organizer for the storage area that prevents small items from rolling around while an available tray positioned below the cargo floor is large enough to store a variety of valuables. Equally impressive is the standard powerplant: a Sentra/Altima-sedan-based 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder matched with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with built-in “steps” that can be controlled through available steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. A Sport Mode tightens up those steps for more aggressive driving. All three Rogue models — S, SV and uplevel SL — include air conditioning, cruise control, keyless remote entry and power windows, locks and mirrors. The options list includes all-wheel-drive (offered on either trim level), leather seats, bright xenon headlights with halogen fog lamps, power sunroof and hands-free cell-phone connectivity. The new SL gets all the bells and whistles including an eight-speaker Bose audio system, 18-inch wheels, the Around View Monitor, automatic climate control and keyless ignition.

Overall: Mid-sized Frontier is one of the few remaining entry-level pickups around with Ford, Dodge and GM gone; big changes coming for calendar-year 2013.

Drivetrain: Carryover four-cylinder and V6 engines, the latter being mandatory if you select the optional four-wheel-drive.

Although Nissan is planning to update its mid-size Frontier early in 2013, the current truck remains a

strong option for those not needing the bloat and mass of full-size offerings. Being about 500 kilograms lighter (base weight to base weight) than the Titan and having a smaller engine(s) translates into a 10.7/8.6 (city/highway) l/100 km rating (V6) versus 16.1/10.9 for the V8-powered Titan. Frontier can also be ordered with a base 152-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder. The optional 261-horsepower 4.0-litre V6 is better suited to towing and off-roading since it’s the only way to get the optional 4x4 system. The 4.0-litre engine is closely related to the award-winning V6 that appears in many other Nissan vehicles. The Frontier continues to be offered in both extended-length King Cab and four-door Crew Cab body styles and in several trim levels, including the four-cylinder S, and SV and V6-equipped SV, SL and off-road-inspired Pro-4X (in either King or Crew Cab body styles). The PRO-4X can be had in two- or four-wheel-drive and includes off-road tuned Bilstein-brand performance shocks, skid plates, unique 16-inch wheels and electronic locking rear differential. For bigger loads, try the Long Bed four-door Crew Cab model that tacks an extra 33 centimetres onto the Crew Cab’s standard 167-centimetre box for a total of about 195 centimetres.

Base price (incl. destination): $23,050Type: Four-door compact tall wagonBase Engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (168)Optional engines (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (173); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (237)Layout: Front-engine, front-/four-wheel-drive

Overall: Ford devises a daring Escape plan that nails it for style and fuel-pump avoidance.

Drivetrain: Plenty of engine choices, all of the four-cylinder variety; the previous V6 and base five-speed manual gearbox are no more.

Ford’s latest Escape represents a clean-sheet design-and-content approach to satisfy the needs of multi-continent

buyers. The sleeker look is radically different from the outgoing version’s boxiness, however its slightly larger dimensions have resulted in greater rear-seat room plus slightly more passenger and cargo volume with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The interior is certainly inviting, with an attractively segmented gauge/control panel with asymmetric air vents. The floor shifter’s position at the base of the dashboard partially blocks the heating/ventilation controls, but makes the area designated for cupholders and armrest/storage more accessible. The up-level Titanium model features well-bolstered front seats that are a major advancement over earlier Escapes. The base front-wheel-drive S model runs with a 168-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, while the front- and all-wheel-drive SE designation uses a 178-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged “EcoBoost” four-cylinder. A 237-horsepower turbo four-cylinder (also from Ford’s “EcoBoost” engine lineup) is standard on the SEL and Titanium trims. A hybrid version won’t be available this time since Ford’s C-Max hybrid wagon uses that drive system. Sadly for a few “Escapees”, the six-speed manual gearbox has shifted away from the Escape lineup, leaving only a six-speed automatic (with a detent for manual gear selection) as the sole transmission. A new “Intelligent” all-wheel-drive system can be ordered with the turbocharged models. It continually assesses road conditions and driver inputs “about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye” and can shift up to 100 per cent of the available power to either the front or rear wheels for maximum grip. The Escape is the first Ford to offer both Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control to help distribute the correct amount of power to each wheel when cornering so that the vehicle maintains its intended path. A dashboard display screen lets the driver know where the power is being distributed. The new-tech gear extends to the option sheet, which is understandably lengthy, considering the Escape’s four distinct trims. But the most unique option is the power liftgate that automatically opens and closes when you shake your foot hokey pokey-style beneath the bumper (great when your hands are full of kids and/or groceries).

Overall: Ford’s hot-selling Explorer nearly as ubiquitous as the original; new Sport model is like a tall Taurus SHO wagon.

Drivetrain: A 290-horsepower V6 and a fuel-sipping turbo four-cylinder available on front-wheel-drive models; new 350-horsepower 3.5-litre twin-turbo “EcoBoost” V6 with six-speed automatic and road-biased all-wheel drive.

Ever wonder why Ford won’t make that Taurus SHO wagon you’ve been dreaming about? Well, it’s

time to pinch yourself. The reborn Explorer Sport should scratch that itch just fine. It uses essentially the same twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6, upgraded six-speed automatic transmission, sport-tuned suspension and all-wheel-drive as the Taurus, but shoves them in a body that can carry up to seven people in style and luxury. With 350 horsepower on tap, the Sport moves like a full-back and that means it doesn’t make any friends with Mother Nature. The Sport also comes with all the technology and luxury toys Ford has to offer, including SYNC and MyFord Touch with Wi-Fi capability, two-toned leather seats and unique 20-inch wheels. Regular Explorers use the adequate and efficient 290-horsepower 3.5-litre V6, but the optional turbocharged 240-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine — front-drive models only — achieves 7.8 l/100 km on the highway versus 8.8 for the V6. Base Explorers arrive with most of the expected trappings for this class of vehicle, including hill-start assist that keeps you from rolling backward while stopped on an incline. The mid-range XLT adds a coded keyless entry pad, back-up warning system, automatic headlamps and heated outside mirrors, while the Limited includes dual-zone climate control, 10-way power driver’s seat, power-adjustable pedals, rear-view camera, push-button start and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Limited’s options list bristles with goodies such as a navigation system, heated-and-cooled leather seats, blind-spot warning system and power liftgate, to name a few.

Overall: The Fusion challenges for best-in-class fuel economy and best-looking sedan in one shot.

Drivetrain: A 170-horsepower four-cylinder plus two optional turbocharged four-cylinders worth 179 and 237 horsepower. Arriving in early 2013 year are two gasoline-electric versions of Ford’s hybrid powertrains.

The next-generation Ford’s Fusion represents a merging of high-fashion style with game- altering fuel economy, with

significant technological treats coming along for the ride. The sedan’s primary eye-catcher is the dramatic roofline, suggesting kinship with the Audi A7, Volkswagen CC and CLS-class Mercedes-Benz. Another design highlight is the open-mouth grille that greatly differs from the previous triple-bar fixture. The Fusion’s fashion statement extends to the cabin, with its fancier trim, comfier seats and a freshly pressed control panel. The tailors at Ford also let out the Fusion’s pants and lengthened the cuffs a bit. The distance between the front and rear wheels increases by five inches and the width and height by about an inch. Trunk room is the only reduction spot (likely due to a shorter deck), but only by about six per cent. The Fusion joins the Hyundai Sonata and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in abandoning a V6 option, but eventually there will be no fewer than five distinctive engine picks, including two Prius-like gasoline-electric hybrid systems. It all begins with a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, while1.6- and 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder “EcoBoost” engines, worth 179 and 237-horsepower, respectively, are optional with the latter a requirement for all-wheel-drive Fusions. The 1.6 is billed as the thriftiest of the three, but in terms of fuel savings, the Hybrid and all-new Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid are really where it’s at. They arrive in the first quarter of 2013. Both employ a 141-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder combined with an electric motor to produce 188 net horsepower. The system increases maximum electric-only velocity to 100 km-h from the previous 75, and resets the fuel-economy bar to 4.0 l/100 km in the city and 4.1 on the highway from 4.6/5.4. The Hybrid also bests the league-topping Toyota Camry Hybrid’s 4.5/4.7 rating. The Fusion Energi plug ‘n’ play model use the same basic tech as the Hybrid, but stretches the all-electric range. Newly available communications and safety content includes keep-you-in-line lane-monitoring system, keep-your-distance adaptive cruise control, confidence-boosting parking-spot assist and shoulder-check-augmenting blind spot and cross-traffic alerts. Buyers can also order the latest version of Ford’s “SYNC” voice-controlled communications and entertainment wizard.

Overall: Ford’s mainstream compact is now available with smoking hot ST performance, or, oppositely, it gets a little electric company.

Drivetrain: 160-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder connected to a five-speed manual transmission or optional twin-clutch automated manual; ST adds turbo and extra gear to handle 252 horses; optional all-electric drivetrain with 143-horsepower motor.

After finally including North America in the new 2012 Focus party, Ford is aggressively expanding the guest list from

both ends of the social spectrum. The new ST performance model takes all the positives of the new Focus and then adds a list of improvements aimed at buyers who would consider a Volkswagen GTI. The 2.0-litre “EcoBoost” turbocharged four-cylinder produces 252 horsepower and even features overboost with a giant slug of mid-range torque added. The ST is still front-wheel drive, but uses a stiffer suspension, bigger and stickier tires and a variety of electronic systems to make it a true back-road hero. The ST gets unique parts inside and out, including more supportive seats and only comes with a six-speed manual transmission. The other newcomer is the Focus Electric that features a 107-kilowatt (143-horsepower) motor and lithium-ion battery pack that can deliver a range of about 120 kilometres. Ford claims that recharging takes just three to four hours from an available 240-volt home station available. Like the ST, the Focus Electric stands out from regular Focii thanks to an Aston Martin-esque grille and headlights, along with special wheels, low-rolling-resistance tires and other wind-cheating aids. Like other modern electrics, the Focus isn’t inexpensive with an MSRP of $42,700 before any tax rebates and other incentives, but there aren’t many downsides if you can afford it. Both new Focus models only come in four-door hatchback form, but the “regular” cars can be had as sedans. That’s because it’s the only style available if you order the price-leader “S” that comes air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steering wheel and basic four-speaker audio system and 15-inch steel wheels. The SE, SEL and Titanium trims get progressively more expensive for both sedan and hatchback. The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine is rated at 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, while optional is a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox. All models arrive with torque vectoring, which is a system that applies light braking pressure to slow down the inside wheel when the car is turning. This helps the Focus attack the corners with more precision by reducing the tendency to plow straight ahead (referred to as understeer).

Overall: You’ll have to settle for a bit more content, revised packages and minor visual changes until a new Titan arrives.

Drivetrain: There’s nothing quite like the exhaust rumble of the Titan’s 317-horsepower 5.6-litre V8, but giving away 60 horsepower to the competition — and having a 16.1/10.9 (city/highway) l/100 km rating for 4x2 models?

With nearly a decade virtually unchanged, the full-size Titan can be a hard sell, especially against the

competition in the ultra-competitive pickup market. However, Titan makes an appeal to hard-working individuals with two frame lengths and two choices in bed length, ending at 8’2”. The bigger box is only offered on extended-cab models and not the four-door Titans. From the outside, the Titan mimics the dimensions and attitude of its domestic rivals and attempts to match them under the hood with an all-aluminum 317-horsepower 5.6-litre V8. That might be well shy of what Dodge, GM and Toyota deliver, but perhaps more important than peak horsepower numbers is the torque, as in close to 400 pound-feet of it, most of which is available from just 2,500 rpm. That helps the Titan tow up to 4,320 kilograms. Two cab styles are offered: extended King Cab (with a pair of reverse opening rear access doors that swing 180 degrees); and a four-door Crew Cab. Both two- or four-wheel-drive versions are available. There’s enough interior room to hold five tall adults with front and rear legroom that’s practically identical. Interior amenities include a choice of bench or bucket seats as well as adjustable foot pedals. Four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock are standard as well as side-impact and side-curtain airbags and rear-proximity sensors that alert you when your backup path is blocked. Back for more is the revised off-road-inspired PRO-4X model that comes with a lower final drive ratio, unique wheels wrapped in off-road rubber, additional skid plates to protect the Titan’s underbelly and electronic-locking rear differential, along with unique appearance upgrades inside and out. For 2013, a new audio system with a larger display and USB capability becomes standard on most models.

Overall: Honda’s eight-passenger Pilot program for 2013 mostly involves staying the course regarding physical or mechanical updates; Bluetooth wireless interface and a rear-view camera head the list of new standard features.

Drivetrain: The 250-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 comes with cylinder deactivation that shuts down two or three cylinders under light load conditions to save fuel; all-wheel-drive option adds extra bad-road, lousy-weather pluck.

Let the other car-based tall wagons claim they can do it all; the Honda Pilot matches or surpasses them for all-

weather, all-road competency, passenger capacity and fuel-stretching capability. The Pilot features the whole stubby-nose, upright-roof-pillars and wheel-openings-pushed-outward-in-true-off-roader-tradition kind of thing. Short front and rear body overhang allows Pilot pilots to traverse deeper ruts and gullies when heading into the back woods. But what about on the highway where the Pilot will spend most of its life? The race-track-tested platform was considerably stiffened for its 2012 facelift and is similar to that used by the Acura MDX (Acura is Honda’s upscale division). Modest calibration changes that were introduced to the suspension afforded a more supple ride. The upscale interior provides reasonable leg and knee room for second- and third-row riders, although those at the far end lose some precious head, shoulder and hip space. Still, eight-occupant seating is impressive in this class of vehicle and out-accommodates the Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe and Mazda CX-9, plus other competitors, by one spot. When not needed, the rear seats can be folded flat without removing the headrests, while the liftgate features a convenient glass-hatch opening. The standard 3.5-litre V6 makes 250 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque, but the engine also receives the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system that imperceptibly switches between three, four and six cylinders, depending on whether the motor is accelerating or cruising at a steady rate. The Pilot is available in either front- and four-wheel-drive, with the latter functioning when tire slip is detected and when accelerating from a stop. The system can also be “locked” in place at speeds below 30 km-h, which is handy when stuck or operating in poor-traction conditions. Hill Start Assist prevents the Pilot from rolling backward on an incline of 10 degrees or greater when the driver’s right foot shifts from the brake pedal to the accelerator. Among the Pilot’s wealth of standard equipment are front and rear air conditioning, tilt/telescopic steering column, trailer hitch and a seven-speaker audio system. For 2013, all models gain Bluetooth audio streaming and Bluetooth short-range wireless networking plus a rear-view camera.

Time to prepare your car for winter Whether you like it or not, October is here, harkening the return of Old Man Winter as the trees get bare and the days ever shorter. Yes, this means once again having to prepare your car or light truck for the cold season. Luckily for us, today’s vehicles are better built than ever. They are also much more reliable. Unluckily for us, that is exactly why few motorists really take the time to properly maintain their cars and trucks. In the best cases, owners simply drop the vehicle off at the garage and let the staff there prepare the car for winter. In the worst cases, owners just ignore the whole issue until a little red warning light starts blinking on the dashboard controls. Not everybody owns a late model car or has the means to entrust their vehicle to a dealer. That is where your local mechanic will be able to help you out by verifying all the uids in the vehicle, checking some of the mechanical and electrical points that

need to be serviced, and installing winter tires. More and more Canadian drivers are getting the picture that winter tires are a necessity for cold-weather driving. A car owner can also do his or her own part in preparing their vehicle by washing and preparing the body with a good wax job and putting a little oil on some body parts here and there. Those who plan to keep their vehicle for the long haul will have its underbody and structure treated with a rust inhibitor. Don’t doubt it for a second: caring for your vehicle before winter is the best way to make it last.

Winter is hard on cars in Canada. Take good care of themand prepare them for the cold.

Base price (incl. destination): $21,600;$57,600 (Raptor)Type: Two- /four-door pickupBase Engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (302)Optional engines (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6, turbocharged (365); 5.0-litre DOHC V8 (360), 6.2-litre SOHC V8 (411)Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive

Overall: As near enough a full redesign gets in the full-size pickup market, the F-150 gets new styling, more technology and the return of the ultra-luxurious range-topping Limited.

Drivetrain: The F-150 borrows the 3.7-litre V6 and 5.0-litre V8 from the Mustang, along with a turbocharged 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” V6 from the Flex; the 6.2-litre V8 from the off-road SVT Raptor can be had in upscale models.

Ford’s plan for its best-selling F-150 follows a simple pattern: update the features one year, revise the

engines the next. Sprinkle in some new trims and technology occasionally. Rinse, repeat. For 2013, Ford is betting that a sharper-looking F-150 and reintroducing the full-lux Limited trim will bring even more customers through the door. All models get new trim-specific front grilles, bumpers and wheel designs, but the Limited sure is a head-turner. Available only as a SuperCrew four-door cab, the body-colour moldings, brightwork and 22-inch wheels are set off by segment-first high-intensity-discharge headlights. The interior is highlighted by heated and cooled red and black leather seats, aluminum trim and piano black accents that complement the new MyFord Touch screen on the dash. Limiteds are exclusively powered by the popular 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” twin-turbo V6 with 365 horsepower. But that’ll be more than enough since more than half of F-150’s sold come equipped with a six-cylinder engine, whether the base 3.7-litre or the optional EcoBoost. Those wanting traditional V8 power are spoiled, too, with 5.0-litre or 6.2-litre options readily available in most other trims. The sheer number of F-150combinations is mind-boggling. Not including paint colors and interior trims, there are four box lengths and three cab sizes (regular, extended SuperCab and four-door SuperCrew), not to mention both rear- and four-wheel-drive availability. A 411-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 is standard on the F-150 SVT Raptor 4x4, which is inspired by Ford’s participation in off-road desert racing. Standard gear includes special shock absorbers that stiffen as they compress to keep the truck from bottoming out or becoming too tippy while cornering. That’s a good idea, since there’s more nearly 30 centimetres of suspension travel in front and about 34 in back. The giant 35-inch-tall all-terrain rubber has been mounted to 17-inch wheels that are positioned farther outboard from the fenders to a point where the Raptor’s width has been increased by more than 17 centimetres compared to a standard F-150.

Overall: The nifty little hatchback acts bigger than it is, with decent interior and cargo space, but at a small price.

Drivetrain: The 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine makes 100 horsepower and 98 pound-feet of torque. An optional four-speed automatic can be ordered but the silky smooth five-speed gearbox is a lot more entertaining around town.

It seems like ages since Mazda brought its sub-compact to North America. Actually, it arrived not that long ago for the 2011 model year, but there have been so many new and updated small-car intros since then, it does seem longer. Compared to the one-size-larger Mazda3 hatch/wagon, the Mazda2 hatchback about 56 centimetres shorter, 6.4 centimetres narrower and it has 15 centimetres less distance between the front and rear wheels. Mazda’s grinning grille is much in evidence, along with some neatly creased and curvy body panels plus a fashionably shaped rear end. Cabin entry is through a set of wide front doors, while rear-seat access is a bit tighter, but doesn’t present a major impediment for average-sized adults. The 60:40 split-folding rear-bench doesn’t compress completely flat into the load floor, but still provides sufficient cargo room for luggage, camping gear and sports equipment, although a roof-mounted rack could be required for skis, bikes or other bulkier objects. The Mazda2 is equipped with a 100-horsepower 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine connected to a five-speed manual transmission, or optional four-speed automatic. The base GX arrives with mainly the basics plus a tilt steering wheel, four-speaker stereo system and power windows, locks and mirrors. The GS adds air conditioning, cruise control, fancier seat covers, 15-inch alloy wheels (instead of steel on base cars), roof-mounted spoiler, leather wrapped steering wheel, and a six-speaker audio system with steering-wheel-mounted controls. There’s no sign of an available backup warning or navigation system or even a power sunroof on the option sheet, but that doesn’t mean that some of these, or additional items won’t eventually appear as options down the road.

Overall: With virtually every other Hyundai model being updated, replaced or dropped, the Sonata is actually flying below the radar for 2013; new 2.4 SE in Canada with tons of goodies.

Drivetrain: Hyundai’s only gas-electric hybrid system complements two four-cylinder gasoline power choices (one of them turbocharged); six-speed automatic transmissions all around.

Hyundai dropped the gauntlet with the 2011 Sonata, which was a new sedan in no way similar to its predecessor. And it waited while its main competitors figured out their responses. Currently, the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu and Ford Fusion are all either on the ground or coming soon, and several of them are following the Sonata’s philosophy of four-cylinder greatness (as in no more V6). The base engine remains a 198-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder (200 horses with the optional dual exhaust), or for more power there’s a 274-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. As well, the Sonata Hybrid operates with a 169-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder connected to a 30-kilowatt (40-horsepower) electric motor for a net output of 209 horsepower. The Hybrid’s other critical ingredient is the use of a 270-volt lithium-polymer battery that helps the car reach speeds up to 100 km-h on electric power alone, topping its direct competitors. The vehicle’s 5.4 l/100 km city and 4.6 highway is near top of the class, but is not quite as good as the latest hybrid offerings from Ford and Toyota. The base 2.4 is connected to a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic, while both the turbocharged engine and the Hybrid employ only six-speed automatics. Base GL Sonatas include the usual power-operated controls plus air conditioning, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth short-range wireless networking and keyless push-button start. The next-up GLS bulks up with a power driver’s seat and heated front and rear seat, while a new SE model adds leather seating, 18-inch wheels plus the Turbo model’s suspension. The idea is to create a sporty driving non-turbo model. The top-end Limited comes with climate control, power sunroof, heated front and rear leather seats, woodgrain interior trim and a premium audio system. The Hybrid arrives loaded right from the get-go, but checking the Premium Package box adds a panoramic sunroof (standard on the Limited and 2.0T), touch-screen navigation, leather seat covers, backup camera, 17-inch wheels (16s are standard) and a premium sound system.

The day is coming when exchanging electric car batterieswill be possible.

A new market forbatteries Unless their vehicle has been poorly maintained, very few car owners have problems with the battery nowa days, even in winter. Long gone are the days when car own ers had to verify the wa ter level in each battery cell. Even cleaning up the posts has become obsolete in many cases, as main tai -ning batteries has become a dealer’s job. But there is a new phe nomenon coming down the pipe. Indeed, as the number of hybrid-electric and all-electric vehi cles grows, there is a rise in concern about maintaining and disposing of these power packs. Almost each and every manufacturer an nounces a long battery life for their electric cars, but of course some vehicle owners might very well drive theirs down faster. What will happen when scores of electric vehicles need to have their batteries changed? They will have to

be recycled, and that, dear friends, is going to be a useful business to be in. Some companies are discovering that recycling those batteries can mean giving them a second life.

This new kind of business will be a place where an electric or hybrid-electric car owner can simply trade in an almost dead battery pack for a recycled unit.
