lives. If, when we die, we fall short in this regard,
God, in His mercy, has given us the opportunity to
purify our souls in Purgatory.
With regard to Purgatory, we should always pray
and have Masses said for our family and friends who
have died, especially during this month of the Holy
Souls. Although we like to think that everyone we
know who has died is in heaven, we show them no
charity if we don’t pray for them. Our Lord told St.
Faustina (Divine Mercy) when her guardian angel
brought her to Purgatory to witness the suffering of
souls, “My mercy does not want this, but justice
demands it.” If we pray for the souls in purgatory
we will receive not only their gratitude but their
prayers for us here as we fight to keep our faith.
In joyful union with the suffering of Jesus and His
Sorrowful Mother,
Fr. Frank Samoylo

and the St. Lorenzo choir were very talented and
energetic during the celebration. I wish to thank Fr.
Frank, Msgr. Keenan, Fr. Anthony, and the St.
Columbanus community for their prayers and
support. I would also like to thank Bobby and
Cherry Miraflores, Mrs. Elvira Mendoza, and my
sons, William, Ian, and David, for their great effort
in organizing the celebration.

When we think of the Catholic Church and the
Holy Father, often called the Bishop of Rome, we
often think of St. Peter’s Basilica. Indeed all the pa-
pal audiences and important Masses are celebrated
there.
However, as Bishop of the Diocese of Rome, the
Pope’s parish church is not St. Peter’s but The Basil-
ica of St. John Lateran (built on land owned by the
Laterani family). It was dedicated by Pope Sylvester
I, on November 9, 324. The popes lived there from
the fourth century until the latter part of the 14th cen-
tury when, at this time, the papacy was now not only
dependent upon the protection of France, but was
also entirely at its mercy. This was seen in the utter
disregard shown by the king, Philip the Fair, in his
attitude toward Boniface VIII and his successors.
Clement V, a native of Southern France, did not ven-
ture to go to Italy after his election in 1305, but had
himself crowned at Lyons, and after 1309 resided at
Avignon, which now remained the residence of the
popes until 1376.
Thanks to the efforts of St. Catherine of Siena, the
papacy was restored to Rome and so the Church still
celebrates the dedication on November 9 of St. John
Lateran. St. John’s is known as “omnium ecclesia-
rum Urbis et Orbis mater et caput.” (“mother and
head of all churches of Rome and the world.”)
Originally dedicated to the Savior, the church is now
dedicated to St. John the Baptist.
The history of St. John’s Basilica and the papacy
should remind us of our Lord’s words to St. Peter in
Matthew 16:18, “And I say to thee: That thou art Pe-
ter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and
the gates of hell shall not42prevail against it.” Of
course this does not mean the gates of hell will not
try to prevail against the church, as we can see from
the hostile political, social, and cultural climate sur-
rounding us.
In our battle against the devil, we need to fortify
our minds with a deep, enquiring knowledge of our
faith and nourish our souls with the grace of the sac-
raments, especially the Eucharist, to do the will of
God in everything we do at every moment of our
