Why Buy Locally Owned?
There are many well-documentedbenefits to our communities and toeach of us to choosing local, independ-ently owned businesses. We realize it isnot always possible to buy what youneed locally and so we merely ask youto Think Local FIRST!
Top Ten reasons to Think Local - BuyLocal - Be Local
1. Buy Local -- Support yourself:Several studies have shown that whenyou buy from an independent, locallyowned business, rather than nationallyowned businesses, significantly more ofyour money is used to make purchasesfrom other local businesses, serviceproviders and farms -- continuing to
strengthen the economic base of thecommunity. (For summaries of a varietyof economic impact studies and casestudies showing that locally-ownedbusinesses generate a premium inenhanced economic impact to the com-munity and our tax base visit sustain-ableconnections.org/thinklocal/why.)
2. Support community groups: Non-profit organizations receive an average250% more support from smaller busi-ness owners than they do from largebusinesses.
3. Keep our community unique:Where we shop, where we eat andhave fun -- all of it makes our communi-ty home. Our one-of-a-kind businessesare an integral part of the distinctivecharacter of this place. Our tourismbusinesses also benefit. “When peo-ple go on vacation they generally seekout destinations that offer them thesense of being someplace, not just any-place.” ~ Richard Moe, President,National Historic Preservation Trust
4. Reduce environmental impact:Locally owned businesses can makemore local purchases requiring lesstransportation and generally set upshop in town or city centers as opposedto developing on the fringe. This gener-ally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.
5. Create more good jobs: Smalllocal businesses are the largestemployer nationally and in our commu-nity, provide the most jobs to residents.
6. Get better service: Local busi-nesses often hire people with a betterunderstanding of the products they areselling and take more time to get toknow customers.
7. Invest in community: Local busi-nesses are owned by people who live inthis community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the communi-ty’s future.
8. Put your taxes to good use: Localbusinesses in town centers requirecomparatively little infrastructure invest-ment and make more efficient use ofpublic services as compared to nation-ally owned stores entering the commu-nity.
9. Buy what you want, not whatsomeone wants you to buy: A market-place of tens of thousands of smallbusinesses is the best way to ensureinnovation and low prices over the long-term. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on anational sales plan but on their owninterests and the needs of their localcustomers, guarantees a much broaderrange of product choices.
10. Encourage local prosperity: Agrowing body of economic researchshows that in an increasingly homoge-nized world, entrepreneurs and skilledworkers are more likely to invest andsettle in communities that preservetheir one-of-a-kind businesses and dis-tinctive character.

(MediaResourceCenter.com) From family and friends to teachersand coaches, finding the perfect present for everyone onyour list can be a daunting task. But with a little creativity, youcan find a great gift without breaking your budget.
Choosing the Perfect GiftThe key to finding the perfect present? Taking time to con-
sider what your loved one most cherishes. Do they favor aspecific hobby? How do they spend their free time? If you'repicking a gift for someone you might not know well, such asyour child's teacher or school nurse, consider giving themsomething to help them unwind and relax. Here are someideas to get you started:
For teachers, school nurses and coachesThe role models in your child's life are often the people that
would benefit most from a pampering present. Help themindulge in some relaxation by packaging up a basket of spa-inspired items. Moisturizing beauty products with seasonalscents - such as the Softsoap Wintermint Wonderland andEnchanting Sugar Plum body washes - will keep skin smoothand glowing throughout the season's festivities and conjureup images of favorite winter memories. Bundle with a lushloofah, mini manicure and pedicure kit, facial mask and lotionfor a basket filled with items that will give them the opportu-
nity to treat themselves to a little "me" time. Homemadetreats and photo collages are also great gift options.
For cooking and baking enthusiastsFor your favorite foodie, consider giving some fun and
affordable kitchen tools, such as ninja gingerbread cookiecutters. If your loved one is known for their savory cuisine,
consider purchasing anassortment of spices to add totheir favorite dishes. Likewise,a new cookbook will helpinspire creativity in the kitchenand add a dash of excitementto their regular recipe routine.
For travel loversFor those on your list who love to hit the road and explore
new territories, consider gifts that will make their travel moreenjoyable. Passport covers, camera accessories, travel jour-nals, or a mini alarm clock are all great options that won'tbreak the bank. You can also give them items that will remindthem of their explorations. Put together a gift basket of exot-ic chocolates and shelf-safe foods to remind them of theirfavorite flavors from abroad. Or you can remind them of oneof the best parts of travel - the feeling of relaxation and get-ting away. Body washes with a refreshing scent, such as thenew moisturizing Softsoap Citrus Splash & Berry Fusion, willtransport recipients to warm days and exotic locales.Combine with a selection of personal care products, such asfacial masks and moisturizers to help them transform theirbathroom into a mini-vacation abroad.
For the kiddosWhen purchasing gifts for very young children, look for
brightly colored toys that play music or offer an interactiveelement. Stuffed animals, baby blankets and clothing aregreat options as well.
For adolescents, teens and in-be-tweensIt's hard to stay on top of the trends most pre-teens and
teenagers are in tune with. Instead, opt for something youknow they'll enjoy. Consider giving a gift certificate to a movietheater or popular store where they can purchase electron-ics, clothing or sporting equipment. If you have your heart seton a tangible present, remember to request a gift receipt, justin case.

The First TV Dinner Was ThanksgivingLeftovers
In 1953, someone at Swanson severe-ly overestimated the amount of turkeyAmericans would consume thatThanksgiving. With 260 tons of frozenbirds to get rid of, a company salesmannamed Gerry Thomas ordered 5,000 alu-minum trays, recruited an assembly lineof women armed with spatulas and ice-
cream scoops andbegan creating mini-feasts of turkey,corn-bread dress-ing, peas and sweetpotatoes — creatingthe first-ever TV din-ner. Thomas latersaid he got the ideafrom neatly pack-aged airplane food.
"Franksgiving”FDR learned the hard way not to mess
with some traditions. In 1939, thePresident declared that Americansshould celebrate the annual feast oneweek early, hoping the decision wouldspur retail sales during the GreatDepression. But Americans did not reactkindly to the New Deal meal. Some tookto the streets while others took to name-calling; the mayor of Atlantic City solvedthe controversy by declaring his residents
would simply enjoy two meals —Thanksgiving and "Franksgiving." Aftertwo years of squabbling (or gobbling, as itwere), Congress adopted a resolution in1941 setting the fourth Thursday ofNovember as the legal holiday.
Thanksgiving is ruled by two verypowerful f-words: "food" and "foot-ball."
Nearly as old as the sport itself, thetradition of watching football onThanksgiving began in 1876, when thenewly formed American IntercollegiateFootball Association held its first champi-onship game. Less than a decade later, more than 5,000 club, college and highschool football teams held games onThanksgiving, with match-ups betweenPrinceton and Yale drawing more than40,000 fans out from their dining rooms.1934 marked the first NFL game held onThanksgiving when the Detroit Lions
took on the Chicago Bears. The Lionshave played on Thanksgiving ever since— except, of course, when the team wascalled away to serve during World War II.

DO YOU NEED AN ATTITUDEADJUSTMENT?
“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of thisworld, but be transformed by the renewing of
your mind” (Romans 12:2)A few years ago our grandchildren (ages five
and three at the time) were with us at our cottage.Playing outside, Ella came running into thecottage saying, “Grandma, I think Jack is havinganother attitude problem.”
Childish behavior has a way of following us inour adult lives. It is something, regardless of ourage, we must keep a constant check on. Considerthree areas of our lives which are driven by ourattitudes.
1. Relationships2. Performance3. World View
As for relationships, Jesus said the greatestcommandment is to love God, others ANDourselves (Luke 10:27). It begins with ourselves.Self-respect (as opposed to conceit) gives us ahealthy respect for God and others.
As for performance, someone asked thebaseball great, Babe Ruth, what he felt like whenhe struck out. His response was, “I never thinkabout striking out.”
As for world view, there is the story about areporter who interviewed some men working at aconstruction site. One man was working ratherlazily and the reporter asked, “What are youmaking?” He answered, “Four dollars an hour.” Asecond man was working rather routinely. Thereporter asked, “What are you making?” The mananswered, “Five dollars an hour.” A third man wasworking enthusiastically, conscientiously, puttinghis heart and soul into his work. The reporterasked, “What are you making?” And he said, “Acathedral!”
Do you need an “attitude adjustment”? If so,start with yourself. Ask God to renew your life bythe transforming of your mind. And remember this.“Attitude is your paintbrush. It colors everysituation.”

CHRISTIAN NEIGHBORS †282 12th Street - Plainwell 269-685-4166
"Neighbors Caring For Neighbors"email: [email protected] www.christianneighbors.org
Homelessness Awareness MonthBy helping Christian Neighbors help others, YOU MAY WIN!!A few stories of serving homeless families this year...
“I moved here from another state about a year ago to care for my grandmother. When my grandmother passed away this last summer, I foundmyself with no housing and no income. I slept wherever I could; yes, I did sleep in my car. I came to Christian Neighbors to find out what assistance may be available. I have a job now working as a home health aide. Through collaborative resources, I will now have housing,
be able to access a food pantry, and I am currently attending school to get my high school diploma.”
“When my wife left me, I found myself homeless with two children. Christian Neighbors was able to help me find housing and help me with food for my children. They took away the embarrassment that I felt as I had never experienced being homeless and not knowing where
to turn for help.”
As fall settles in with winter around the corner, take a moment to be thankful for the security of your home, family and neighborhood. Be challenged to remember those who may be struggling or may not know where they will sleep tonight.
Christian Neighbors has been serving the most vulnerable individuals and households within our community since 1983.
We provide:• Food boxes each month for those who need it.
• Emergency financial assistance with rental evictions, utility shut-offs and needed prescriptions.• Financial management and other activity classes to the general public.• Personalized budgeting and mentoring to those who need a little help.• Veteran Service Officer available 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month.• Free tax clinic through United Way Partnership (February 9, 2013)
• Help with food stamp application.
