Chairman John Bugh’s financial report on page 27 for more details on the current positive financial trends.

Thank you for your continued membership, but don’t keep it to yourself. Share the exciting news with a family member, co-worker, neighbor or fellow member of your church. I have found that bringing a guest to the Club to SHOW them is the best approach, instead of just TELLING them. The Platinum Partnership is a great program that we can all personally benefit from with our new members.

Recently, we have had several business owners discover the value of the Platinum Partnership. They have offered MAC memberships to key employees as part of their employment benefits. If two members join at the same time, each receives $100 in reduced dues through the Platinum Partnership. I encourage you to think about those employees, who might be good fits in your business, to join together and sponsor; what a great way to thank your employees for their value to your business!

As I am writing this, the Cardinals are treating us to some more exciting October baseball. The Club has been bustling with activity. Before you know it, we will be heading into the heart of the holiday season. Make plans to share in the memorable times at your Club with friends and family.

Stay connected to your Club, where camaraderie is experienced and relationships are forged.

JOEL KARSTEN - PRESIDENTDAVID P. WEISS - FIRST VICE-PRESIDENT CHRISTOPHER MICHALAK - SECOND VICE-PRESIDENT GORDON D. BUSH - TREASURER • DANIEL D. FUSZ - SECRETARY

Last month, the Board along with spouses and significant others,

went on a retreat to Washington D.C. to visit four amazing private clubs – Congressional Country Club, Cosmos Club, University Club and the Metropolitan Club. On the flight back to St. Louis, I was talking to my wife Kerrie about the fantastic trip we just enjoyed, and I also reflected on how proud I am to be a member of the MAC. When I think of what our Club has to offer versus other clubs, it is clear that the MAC offers so much more than most clubs. With access to two unique facilities, offering more than 50 amenities for the entire family to enjoy, plus our traditions and history, there is really only one Missouri Athletic Club.

The trip to our nation’s capital was not only informative, it also served as a reminder that the reciprocal clubs program is a tremendous benefit of your membership. When you are planning your next trip, please go to our website (www.mac-stl.org) and take a look at the list of outstanding private clubs MAC members have access to throughout the United States, and the world.

This month, I encourage you to dine at the West Clubhouse. Chef Grant Higgs has joined our team and is leading the culinary operation. Now is the perfect time to make MAC West a frequent dining destination; you will be glad you did.

Bright Lights will be shining at

the Club on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the second annual Cherry Diamond Gala Dinner and Auction. Two years ago, Past-President Chris Lawhorn introduced this event as a creative way to raise needed capital funds. The inaugural event was an overwhelming success in meeting that goal and it also accomplished more, as a new MAC tradition was born. For those who were there in the Missouri Room that night, they experienced a special night sharing in Club camaraderie with fellow members. It was truly a memorable night where MAC spirit was on full display.

Soon, you will be receiving a letter highlighting how you can help by donating, sponsoring and attending the upcoming Gala Dinner and Auction. The event was a sell out two years ago, so make sure you make your reservations early.

Like all fiscally sound organizations have done over the last five years, during a challenging economic climate, the MAC has made revenue growth opportunities and expense reductions top priorities. The Board and management have improved the financial path of the MAC for our members and employees. The fiscal 2013 budget calls for NO DUES INCREASES OR CAPITAL FEE INCREASES. The Board has approved a plan to achieve this goal. The driving factor is, and will always be, the growth and stability of our membership. Please read Finance

From the General Manager’s Desk

Wally Smith

Dear Members:In July, I concluded my monthly column

with the following question and observa-tion, “What is ‘Obvious’ Platinum Club Status?” Well, I can tell you it is very real; you know it when you’re around it. It starts with the drive up, continues through the front door, on to the interaction with staff, the facilities, the cleanliness, the program quality, the menus and services enjoyed, the traditions honored and the camaraderie that permeates - You know it when you’re there.

Well, I am proud to report that The Missouri Athletic Club, your Club, has been singled out as a “Platinum Club” of America. Nationally, the MAC has once again been recognized as one of the very best of all the best and I am so proud to be a part of this great institution and tra-dition. Take a minute and be thankfulthat you have the MAC in your life;I do every day.

I am also so thankful for the outstand-ing staff that I inherited upon joining the MAC, but soon found my immediate task was getting organized and re-setting our operational structure. The 17 direct reports I had on our organizational chart needed some re-organizing, which is com-ing around nicely. A key decision was who would be the “go to guy” at West, since it is impossible for me to be in two places at one time. It became obvious that Darrin Harnetiaux was not only the guy, but that he was also ready for more responsibility, and is totally committed to our thoughts and plans for “Obvious Platinum” improvements. With Chef Grant’s new eyes and energy, coupled with Darrin’s history and drive, that duo is poised to rock West to new heights. Be sure to give Darrin, West Clubhouse Manager, the thumbs up and say hello, and welcome Chef Grant. Let those guys know what you’re thinking because they care and want to make your next visit the very best.

Speaking of letting us know – our thanks and shout out to everyone who took the time to complete the survey last month. The results are being tabulated as I type (the Cards are also 1&1 with the Giants) and will be shared as a central theme next month - More on that later.

One significant tweak I need tohighlight is our Employee Holiday fund program. Rather than ask for voluntary write-in contributions, and the pile of paper and accounting work that entails, we will include a completely voluntary $100 contribution on your statement which you can increase, decrease or elimi-nate altogether. A vital component within this new system is $10 of the $100 will be split equally between our Foundations and charities. The practice will satisfy a key requirement within our Foundations, which calls for many small contributions to offset the larger ones thus maintaining the validity of the 501(C)(3) tax status. The form included with your statement should be very clear but, the main point is, we are knocking out several birds with this system; it is streamlined, efficient, saves us time and money and in the end, is totally up to you. Thanks so much for your support on this.

And lastly, as noted in the Finance report, we have completed our budgets

and plans for fiscal 2013 with no dues or fee increases sched-uled. I would like to attribute that to outstanding manage-ment, but the bottom line is we plan to fill our Buckets on the top line. One of our longstanding members asked me the other day, “Wally, what happens if every member of the Club has just one more lunch OR just one more dinner OR booked just one more party OR books just one more room at the Club each month OR brings in just one new Platinum Partnership member this year. What happens?“ As the smile on my face beams, the answer is Obvious. We thrive! You knew I could not possibly conclude without working in our “Bucket” theme. Let’s fill them up, so be sure to come on out and have some MAC fun – See you at the Club. Wally

Darrin HarnetiauxDarrin Harnetiaux has been promoted to West Clubhouse Manager. Darrin has been with Club since January of 1996. Darrin started Downtown in the Jack Buck Grill as the Night Supervisor, and transferred to West in May of 1996, taking on the role of Food and Beverage Manager. It also became very apparent that Darrin has the respect of the membership, the staff and that he naturally goes that extra mile and just plain ‘gets it.’ Please be sure to congratulate Darrin on his promotion. When not hard at work, Darrin spends time with his wife Crista and their two sons Logan and Hunter. He also enjoys sports and fishing.

He recently moved back to his home city of St. Louis from Baton Rouge, La., where he spent the last year opening a new Renaissance Hotel, and is hon-ored and excited to be a part of the MAC team. Prior to his time in Baton Rouge, he was the Front Office Manager of the Renaissance St. Louis Airport Hotel for over four years. During this time, he also worked on several task force projects in which he assisted struggling hotels, new hotels, and hotels that were transitioning to a new management company. These included locations ranging from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Minneapolis, and hotel brands including Sheraton, Renaissance, and Radisson.

The MAC has a few new faces, and a familiar face, to strengthen the team. Members who frequent the West Clubhouse probably know Darrin Harnetiaux, who has served as Operations Manager for many years. He has been named the West Clubhouse Manager and will oversee several departments at West. Chef Grant Higgs will be heading the culinary team at West. She recommends members work with a trainer to get on the right track.

Pointing out the positives, she helps to motivate her clients to reach their goals. “It’s all about taking small steps,” Keisha says. Keisha is available Monday through Friday for personal training ses-sions.

If you’re looking for train-ing at the West Clubhouse, call Gil Claggett. Gil is an American Council on Exercise (ACE) certi-fied personal trainer and is CPR certified. NEED A JOB? JOIN TOASTMASTERS.By: Tom Applewhite

A recent article that appeared in the Aug. 9 St. Louis Post-Dispatch discussed how employers are finding that “soft skills” – communication, work ethic and critical thinking – are lacking. With only a third of local employers saying that they intend to hire new employees, it’s critical that job applicants have these soft skills. Toastmasters is particularly helpful in the communication and critical thinking departments.

Communication was the original focus of Toastmasters when it was founded many decades ago. Not only do participants perform speeches that focus on a variety of topics, such as vocal variety, gestures and speaking persuasively, but your peers evaluate your speech performance.

For critical thinking skills, each Toastmasters meeting fea-tures a session called “Table Topics” that requires participants to give a one- to two-minute speech on a randomly assigned topic. While having to think quickly can cause speech slip-ups, the Toastmasters grammarian helps catch those pesky “ums” and “ahs” that may permeate a speaker’s sentences, allowingparticipants to speak more smoothly.

As participants accomplish different objectives, be they on thecommunicator track or the leadership track, they receive formal recognition from Toastmasters International, a worldwideorganization, certifying goal completion. Therefore, not only willparticipants have further developed those soft skills, but theywill be able to prove it.

For more information on MAC Toastmasters, please contact Chair Drew Weckbach at 217-430-3656 or [email protected].

For almost 50 years, the Repertory Theatre has been

entertaining St. Louis audiences. What audiences don’t know about is the artistry and the craftsmanship that goes on behind the scenes to create the beautiful costumes worn during the productions. But now, we can see them up-close as volunteers from the Rep’s Backer Board model outstanding costumes and fashions. A narrator will describe the building of a costume, from the designer’s drawing to sewing

the final product: It’ll be great fun! Contact Brittney Barton for reservations at 314-539-4490 or bbarton@mac-stl-org.

SERENDIPITY LEADS FOREVER YOUNG BACK TO SCOTT

By Governor Judith Hanses

While returning from the April tour of Scott Air Force Base, someone said, “It would be great if we could get back

together in September for the Air Show!” The FYC did just that, and what a show it was! People were in awe of the legendary Air Force Thunderbirds. Within seconds of taking off, the planes were soaring at 500-feet, and climbed to astonishing heights. The Boeing-built F-18 jets demonstrated the famous maneuverability and speed that make the U.S. military a force to be reckoned with across the world. The tremendous skill of the pilots must be seen to be believed. The planes flew upside-down, sideways and even right-side-up, with wing-tips nearly touching. The show was perfect for FYC members who are always up for a new experience!

The Army Black Knights Paratrooper team was also on hand for a display of air-to-ground acrobatics. The men and women

paratroopers made jumping out of a perfectly safe airplane, flying 12,000-feet-in-the-air, seem like a very reasonable, even fun activity. Able to target a

precise spot for landing, they glided in with ease and grace, but not 10-feet in front of spectators. Before the show, they autographed pictures for grandkids of the FYC gang. A serendipitous moment months earlier led to a great day — and that’s how it works in the Forever Young Club.

The NCCS will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a very exciting upcoming event. “An Evening with the Cardinals” will be held on Jan. 26, 2013 at The Sheldon Theatre. Former St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famers Lou Brock and Bob Gibson, Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny and Voice of the Cardinals Mike Shannon will participate in an engaging evening of discussion about issues, both past and present, involving the Cardinals and Major League Baseball. Dan McLaughlin of Fox Sports Network will serve as emcee and host a moderated question and answer session. The evening will also include a silent auction, featuring very desirable memorabilia. The last week of January is an exciting time for Cardinal Nation as the winter warm-ups are in full swing, and spring training is just around the corner. This special event will provide both first-hand information about the upcoming season and treasured stories from the past. For the past 25 years, The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS) has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for children with cancer and their families worldwide. The organization serves as a financial, emotional and educational resource for those affected by childhood cancer at every stage of illness and recovery. More than 34,000 children and their families have been helped by the orga-nization since its inception.

Update fromthe Finance Committee

I am happy to report that the Club’s financial position has improved dramatically in the last 12 months. The results are directly attributed to tough decisions made by Club management (and the Board), a generally improving economy, and most importantly, members spending more money at the Club. The Club’s fiscal year ended on August 31, 2012, and reflected the following positive trends:• Overall cash flow was nearly $1,200,000 - a 71% increase from 2011• Operating revenues (not including dues) were up more than 5% from 2011 – that equates to more than $400,000 in added revenue• Rooms (hotel) profit has increased dramatically – up 118% from 2011• Club management continues to monitor expenses - over $1,000,000 in annual expense reductions since 2008• We continue to pay down debt – over $725,000 in principal payments each year On another good topic, the MAC’s term loans were scheduled to mature in early 2013. Thanks to our excellent relationship with Jefferson Bank and Trust, we recently negotiated a five-year extension. A lower interest rate and an adjusted repayment schedule will result in $120,000 of annual cash flow savings through 2017 – savings that can be spent on improving your Club! Our current term debt is $8,600,000 and at the end of the five-year term will be paid down to $4,750,000 (as we continue to amortize our debt on an aggressive schedule). Last month the Finance Committee and the Board approved the Fiscal 2013 Operating Budget. General Manager Smith (along with his management team) spent countless hours on the budget process. Incorporating aspects of the “Three Buckets”, a sta-bilized membership count and many of the trends above have resulted in a budget that will keep the Club on a solid and sustainable path. Obviously, there is plenty of hard work ahead. We must continue to recruit members, uncover additional revenue sources and closely monitor expenses. The Club’s independent accounting firm (BKD) is completing their audit as we speak. As is the case every year, the annual audit will be available for review by the end of the year. Finally, and maybe the best news to report, there will be NO dues or capital fee increases in fiscal 2013. For those still looking for a Platinum Partner, please share this great news with your prospective new member.Sincerely,

John M. BughFinance Chairman

Artist of the Month

Harry Weber is this month’s featured artist in the MAC Art

Gallery at the Downtown Clubhouse. Most of the drawings in this exhibit were done in Vietnam, while Weber served there on river patrol boats, in 1966 and 1967. The impressions of Korea and Desert Storm were done at the request of a veteran’s organization in Alabama, where these and other drawings are on display at the Military Museum on the U.S.S. Alabama.

Weber is probably best known for his sculptures, which are highly regarded for their sense of movement and vitality. His aim is to have his sculptural work show the same life and spontaneity as his sketches.

Weber’s sculptures are installed across the country and abroad. In St. Louis, he is best known for the 10 action figures of St. Louis Hall of Fame baseball players outside of Busch Stadium; the statue of Dred and Harriet Scott on the east side of the Old Courthouse and the large Lewis and Clark statue just south of the Eads Bridge. These and dozens of others are in public view throughout the Greater St. Louis area.

If you are interested in purchasing any of Weber’s work that is displayed at the Club, please contact Linda Van de Riet at 314-539-4448.

MAC EMPLOYEE HOLIDAY FUND AND CHARITABLE GIVING

On your November member statement you will notice a voluntary contribution charge in the amount of $100 which will be allocated as follows:

$90 MAC Employee Holiday Fund$2 MAC Preservation Foundation (tax deductible)$2 MAC Foundation for the Arts (tax deductible)$2 MAC Sports Foundation (tax deductible)$2 MAC Charitable Society for Children (tax deductible)$2 MAC Heritage Society

Enclosed with your member statement will be a form which you can use to adjust any of the above amounts, if you so desire. In other words, all of these contributions are totally voluntary.

In the past, the Employee Holiday Fund appeal was always sent out in the fall of each year and the various foundation solicitations were sent out periodically dur-ing the year. This annual bundling of contributions will save time and resources for both our members and the Club’s accounting staff by consolidating everything into one easy package. We believe this approach will be a convenient and efficient way for our members to thank our employees for their service and support the club’s charitable entities at the same time.

Each of our charitable entities (MAC Preservation Foundation, MAC Sports Foundation, MAC Foundation for the Arts, MAC Charitable Society for Children) was created to address special goals of your Club and to assure that your gifts to them are tax deductible for federal and state income tax purposes.

From time to time, you receive communications and/or visits from fellow MAC members soliciting your contributions to these entities. Generally, those solicita-tions request gifts of “significant” amounts.

What you may not know is that in order to receive those significant contributions and retain their charitable exempt status, each of our foundations also needs to receive a large number of “significant” contributions in “insignificant” amounts (e.g., less than $10 per gift) in order to keep the IRS from meddling in their affairs.

An illustration of the implementation of this “public support” tax rule you see all the time is the solicitation by utilities and newspapers that ask you to add a dollar or two to your monthly bill for charitable purposes.

Your Board of Governors has determined that a similar approach is appropriate to the “care and feeding” of its charitable entities.

Thanks for your support. It is very much appreciated.

Has your insurance advisor clearly explained the different ways your firm’s risk is assessed? If there’s a lack of clarity, it may be hurting your company’s profitability.

Powers does more than sell insurance. By fully immersing ourselves in our clients’ operations, we develop customized, measurable plans that reduce the cost of risk. We find ways to optimize cash flow while minimizing tax burdens, adding tangible value to the bottom line.

An independent member of SIAA , Powers combines personal service and accountability with the strength of that $5.5 billion international alliance.

As a fellow MAC member, I invite you to call me directly at (314) 333-4918 or visit www.PowersInsurance.com to learn how your business can manage risk with confidence.
