Message from the Principal
A Thanksgiving Message from the Principal It’s November, and soon our entire country will take at least one day from its busy calendar to thank
God for His abundant blessings. For most people, the world will slow down long enough so that families can gather together in prayer and share a favorite traditional meal.
Here at St. Pius X School, our students, faculty and staff will also celebrate the season and the ap-proach of Thanksgiving Day. But while students and teachers alike look forward to a few days off from home-work and lesson plans, prayerful thanksgiving at school is in no way limited to a single day in November. Each morning our children start their day in prayer. Special intentions are offered by even our youngest preschool-ers. At lunchtime, we pause again to give thanks for the food we have. And at day’s end, after homework assign-ments are recorded and book bags are packed, we stop once more to pray together as a school community, knowing that “Through Him all things were made.” Throughout the year, St. Pius X students combine their prayers with Christian service. In November we attend the school’s Thanksgiving liturgy that is prepared by our children. Our annual “Prayer and Share Day,” in which our children share baked goods with each other and those in need, is founded on prayer and the re-membrance that Christ’s message is one of caring for those less fortunate.
By report card conference time, visitors will see our school’s “Christmas Giving Tree” across from the library. Families like yours are invited to take home one of our tree’s ornaments. These ornaments represent gifts of clothing and toys that will brighten the Christmas morning of some of our own St. Pius X students who may otherwise go without.
It is very fitting then, that on November 22nd our students join with the rest of the country in giving thanks to the Lord, because it is very much in keeping with what they do each and every day at school. On be-half of our faculty and staff, I wish you all a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving Yours in Christ, Dennis Mullahy, Principal

What’s up next? An Expanded Playground! Because of the generosity and support of our St. Pius X School families and friends, our Parent School Association has been able to pledge funding for the next three years so we can expand our current playground. To say the least, our students are excited. We hope to add all of the new playground equipment as soon as the ground thaws this coming spring. After the snow melts, look for more news about this exciting event!

Dear Parents and Friends:
On Saturday, January 12, 2013, the St. Pius X School Board will sponsor A Winter’s Night Out in Miami at The Desmond Hotel in Albany, New York. This annual event provides an opportunity for parents, friends, and patrons of St. Pius X School to come together for an evening of entertainment while raising money for our parish school. We anticipate that over 300 people will attend A Winter’s Night Out in Miami this year! Through silent and live auctions conducted during the evening, this event also serves as the single largest fundraising activity for St. Pius X School each year. Last year the generosity shown by parents, parishioners, friends, and other supporters helped raise over $50,000 for the School! We were able to help purchase new computers in our upper wing Technology Lab.
We hope that you will help us make this evening a success by donating an item or gift certifi-cate that can be used in the silent or live auction. In addition to receiving recognition for your donation, your name and/or the name of your business will be included in that evening’s pro-gram. If you would like to make a donation, please complete the enclosed Auction Donation Form and return it to St. Pius X School office c/o Maria Brunell. If you would like to have your donation picked up or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the school of-fice at 465-4539.
Your continuing support and commitment to St. Pius X School and the success of this event is genuinely appreciated.
Sincerely,
A Winter’s Night Out in Miami Auction Committee

Meatloaves Wanted !
Sacred Heart Food Pantry Needs Our Help
As you might already know, our school con-
ducts two food drives during the year for the
Sacred Heart Food Pantry in North Albany,
just miles from our school.
We are in need of volunteers to make a meat-
loaf just once a month to provide a special
meal each week for those families who rely on
the food pantry.
Sister Sarah tells us her people love St.Pius X
meatloaves. Some have even requested our
school meatloaves instead of turkey for their
Thanksgiving meal.
Please consider joining us in feeding those
less fortunate. Meatloaves, fresh or frozen,
may be dropped off at the school.
To help please contact
This year, more than ever, local
families are in need of our help.
We are collecting gently used
coats, and new mittens, gloves,
hats, and scarves for adults and
children.
Let us help keep God’s children
warm during this cold winter, as
it would be truly a blessing for
those in need.
All clothing will be distributed to our brothers and
sisters through Catholic Charities. Your items may be
dropped off in the box located at the school entrances.
If you have any questions, please contact Barb White at 605-3711, or [email protected]
PRAYER REQUEST FOR DONNA MICHELS Please keep Mrs. Donna Michels and her family in your prayers.
Donna has been one of our reading specialists for many years, and
a recent visit to her doctor revealed a non-cancerous brain tumor.
The surgery has been performed to remove that tumor, and Donna
is now in recovery at Albany Medical Center. Donna misses St.
Pius X and all of the children she works with. We thank you for
your prayers and support.
While Donna recovers, Mrs. Jen Newman will be working with
Miss Laura Franzese and our students in the reading room. Jen is a
certified teacher who has worked at St. Pius as both a long-term
and short-term substitute. Feel free to contact her here at school if
you have any questions.
Mr. Mullahy, Principal
Mohawk Kateri Tekakwitha became North America's first aboriginal saint Sunday morning October 20th, in a canonization cere-
mony conducted by Pope Benedict XVI.
She was among seven church role models named as saints as the sun rose over St. Peter's Square. Native Americans in beaded and
feathered headdresses sang songs to Kateri during the ceremony.
Known as the "Lily of the Mohawks," Kateri was born in 1656 in what is now New York state to a pagan Iroquois father and an Al-
gonquin Christian mother. Her parents and only brother died when she was four during a smallpox epidemic that left her nearly blind
and her face badly scarred.
She went to live with her uncle, a Mohawk, and was baptized Catholic by Jesuit missionaries. But she was ostracized and persecuted
by other natives for her faith, and she died in 1680 in what is now Canada, at age 24.
Her body is entombed in a marble shrine at the St. Francis-Xavier Church in Kahnawake, a Montreal-area Mohawk community that
was expected to be well represented among the 1,500 Canadian pilgrims who planned to attend the celebrations.

News from the Health Office
PHYSICAL EXAMS New York State Education Law mandates that each student receive a
physical when entering a school district for the first time and again in
grades K, 2, 4, and 7. An examination administered not more than twelve
months prior to the commencement of the school year in which the ex-
amination is required, will be accepted. If you have not already done so,
please submit these physicals as soon as possible, or let me know of an
upcoming appointment. Physical exam forms are available in the health
office or doctors may use their own form.
MEDICATIONS
Any medications that need to be given during school hours, MUST have
a written doctor’s order AND written parent permission to be kept on file
in the health office. Medications must be in their original containers and
will be locked in the health office. This policy is for all prescription and
over the counter medications. Students may keep cough drops in the
classroom with written permission from a parent.
ILLNESS
To reduce the spread of infection, we ask that you keep your child home:
---With a fever over 100 degrees and until fever free for 24 hours without
the use of fever reducing medications.
---If experiencing constant cough or severe runny nose.
---For 24 hours after the start of an antibiotic
---For 24 hours after a vomiting and/or diarrhea episode
Please contact the health office with any questions. Thank you.

Miss Theresa Reid, St. Pius X School’s Technology Director, along with
four other candidates, made her First Promises to the Third Order Carmelite
Community on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Church, Troy, New
York. What is a Third Order Lay Carmelite? A Third Order Lay Carmelite is
called to the Family of Carmel to be involved deeply in the mission of the
Church. They strive to contribute to the sanctification and transformation of the
secular world. They do this by sharing or participating in the charism of the Car-
melite Order. In short, the Charism of Carmel is: prayer (personal and liturgi-
cal); community (a love of those with whom we live and work); and apostolic
work (solidarity with God's People everywhere). The call to Carmel is the call
to see God's will in the ordinary circumstances of everyday life. If you are inter-
ested in learning more about the Third Order Carmelite, please check out the
Carmelite website at: www.stelijahlaycarmelite.com

“PRAY WITHOUT CEASING.” I THESSALONIANS 5:17
Upcoming Activities and Dates to Remember:
O Lord, open my eyes that I may see the need of others.
Open my ears that I may hear their cries.
Open my heart so that they need not be without nourishment and hope.
Let me not be afraid to defend the weak because of the anger of the strong, nor to defend the poor because of the rich.
Show me where love and hope and faith are needed, and use me to bring them to your people.
Open my eyes and ears that I may this coming day be able to do your work for peace and justice wherever that may take me.
