From the Editor

I was in London recently, at the launch of the Do Something Brilliant campaign: a

celebration of communities and community volunteers spearheaded by The Media Trust.

At the launch beside Carrie Warr and myself from Taste Tideswell, there were media bigwigs and charity leaders from around the country.

The Taste Tideswell stand was busy and visitors were genuinely interested how Tideswell is uniquely tackling the countrywide problem of the closure of small family owned shops.

But Taste Tideswell can’t do it alone. This month sees the launch of Philip Stafford’s Shop in Tideswell business, enabling everyone easy access to products sold in the village via his website, shopintideswell.co.uk.

If you currently don’t Shop in Tideswell I seriously urge you to - and now with online shopping an option, there really is no excuse at all.

Thank you

Linda Whitehead would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who donated,

and especially, to those who gave their time to help, at the sale for animal rescue, on 28th of September. We raised £487.50 which was fantastic.

We have made donations to the Dogs Trust UK and Dogs Rescue Spain. They were both very grateful for our help.

Linda.

Science in the Park

Hairy wood ants build mounds that stay warmer than the surrounding soil by

thatching the nest-tops and moving the thatch as it heats or cools, creating a solar-powered roof… say scientists in the Peak District National Park.

Discover more fascinating facts about life in the national park at two ‘Science in the Park’ events this autumn:• Saturday November 2, at the Peveril

Centre, Castleton, S33 8WP (next to Castleton visitor centre), 10.30am to 4pm.

• Saturday November 9, at the Town Hall, Bakewell, DE45 1BT (close to Bakewell visitor centre), 10.30am to 4pm.

Both events are free of charge with plenty of fun science activities for children and

adults. The events are being organised by the Peak District National Park Authority as part of the Economic and Social Research Council’s Festival of Social Science.

Digital microscopes and other scientific equipment will be available for people to observe the natural world in close up.

People visiting ‘Science in the Park’ will be able to take part in some real experiments and research projects at each event. Local scientists and university researchers will be on hand to talk about their Peak District studies and explain how their findings are important for the national park and the people who live there and visit.

Soroptimists

The members met at the Old Hall hotel, Buxton for their September meeting ,

the start of the new Term.

Ian Taylor gave a fascinating talk on Family History and the vote of thanks was given by Shirley Hope. At the close of the Summer Term, Don Innes had spoken to members about Safeguarding, a meeting which was enjoyed in the sun.

During the summer break, many members had been on holidays. Meanwhile, Sara, Fiona and Jackie held a Garden Party for the BIG (Birthing In Gambia ) Project which the international organisation is running. With Mavis, they organised a clay pigeon shoot to raise funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind, and the Air Ambulance appeal. Each event raised over £500 for these great causes. These energetic ladies are thanked not only by the charities they supported, but also by the remaining members of the club.

Region Vice President Elaine McDonald has invited Soroptimists from all over the Region to her “Away Day” which will take place in Leicester, the home of Richard 111. Sara has been busy again...this time organising a trip on the Judith Mary 11, in Whaley Bridge.

The next dinner meeting at the Old Hall will be on 16th October, when the speaker will be Nicola Crawford, representing the Medical Diagnostic Dogs charity.

Flying Visit

The October meeting of the Miller's Dale & District W.I. welcomed Sheila

Dyson. who spoke about the Flight of the Thousand Eyes. Sheila and two fellow pilots flew a Cessna plane from England to Sydney, Australia. The purpose was to raise money for 'ORBIS' - an international charity organisation that provides training and sets up services in the less developed countries for eye operations, cataracts etc. Every £20 donated pays for a cataract operation.

Sheila told us of the journey the three of them had made with a commentary and showing slides. We all thoroughly enjoyed her visit and were very impressed by their achievements.

Some of the Members had visited the mosque in Sheffield. They were made very welcome and really enjoyed their visit. All were impressed by the dedication of the religion to families and the additional education the children received. The Members then went on to The Botanical Gardens for lunch.

The report was given by our delegate who had attended The Derbyshire Autumn Federation meeting which was held in Derby. We also discussed the Christmas lunch. Our yearly programme had been finalised for 2014 and would now only require any outings to be added.

Members were reminded that the Annual Meeting takes place on November 13th and this will be followed by Cheese and Wine.

Gatherings11.11.12.Approx. 10:30-11a.m.

We gatheredRound the cenotaphOn a grey November morning. In coats and hats,And scarves and gloves,We moaned about the cold. We sang our hymns,Said our prayers,And paid homage to ‘Her Maj’. And laid crimson wreathsAround the plinthFor the fallen and the lost. Whilst in reverent silenceFlags were loweredBy degrees, ‘Til the final, fading notesOf The Last Post’sMournful lament

Drifted on a squally wind,To meet eleven, half muffled,Measured chimes of the cathedral bell. .….And then we retired to the pubFor a body warming ‘stiffener’Before our Sunday lunch. 1.7.16.7.30 a.m.

They gathered in the trenchesOn a sombre July morning. In mud-caked, cold, damp, khaki serge,That chilled them to the bone. With bayonets fixed and emotions mixed,They cracked a joke, shared a smoke,And hid their fear from the adjacent bloke. And waited for the whistle. Few of them came home. ‘Lest we forget’ Dave Greenan 11.11.12.

Tidza Ramblers

As we set off by car on our way to start the we passed three Tideswell cyclists.

Don't know where they were heading as they cycled through Perry Dale but we were heading for Kinder Scout.

The lovely sunny day had enticed many people outdoors. Climbing up Grindsbrook got the heart pumping but once on top it was very chilly and our gloves were worn for the first time this Autumn.

Our next walk has been moved from the normal second Sunday in the month so please check "Dates for your Diary" if you fancy joining us.

We hope it won't be long until our leader Helen is back in the village and able to take charge again but until she is please contact 871817 if you need any information.

MS @ LVH now!

In need of a translation? MS stands for multiple sclerosis. LVH stands for Litton

Village Hall.

Yes, perhaps further translation is needed… We are a small group of friendly types who have the multiple sclerosis experience; either personally or are affected in some way. We hold monthly Get togethers on the last Saturday afternoon in the month and we are splendidly informal, so just come along if you wish. We just chat; we chat about anything, even sometimes MS. Our inception was at Tideswell’s VK for which we gratefully thank the previous owners Louise & Kenny Sharp.

Our November Get together is on Saturday 30th November at 2pm at Litton Village Hall. For any queries or if you would like a lift, please contact Andrea M on 871820.

The West End in Tideswell

On Monday 4th November, there is a rare opportunity to see Verdi’s

opera ‘Les Vepres Siciliennes’, screened live from the performance at The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. It is an early performance, at 17.45 and people are requested to arrive by 17.15 in time to order interval drinks at the George Hotel venue. At the time of writing there are still seats available. To book, please contact Jacqueline on 01298 872993 or email [email protected].

Three days later on Thursday 7th, the National Theatre is screening Alan Bennet’s highly acclaimed play ‘The Habit of Art’, starring Richard Griffiths, Frances de la Tour and Alex Jennings. This is an imaginary meeting between Benjamin Britten and W H Auden, and is being shown by Tideswell

Cinema as part of the National Theatre’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Just in to next month, on 3rd December, there will be a second opportunity to see ‘Frankenstein’ from the National, this time starring Jonny Lee Miller as Victor Frankenstein, and Benjamin Cumberbatch as his creation. Both actors won the coveted Olivier Award in 2012 for their performance.

A big event is coming up on 27th February with the live screening of War Horse, and tickets are already on sale for this. For full details of Tideswell Cinema’s season, please visit the website tideswellcinema.com

Pam Retires

Many of you will have noticed a regular face missing from the Pharmacy.

Pam Buckley retired on Friday, 27th September after 38 years of valued service in the Pharmacy. Before that she worked briefly in the other village pharmacy.

Pam has always given more than was expected of her. Her acts of kindness and helpfulness to so many will be remembered, always done quietly and without fuss. In the dispensary her efficiency and knowledge were legendary. She will be much missed.

It just remains for all staff, both present and former, and I'm sure all the folk that Pam has helped over the years, to wish her a long, healthy and very happy retirement.

Tideswell Parish Matters

Tideswell’s new Parish Council is continuing to sort itself out after the

mass resignations earlier in the year.

At the last council meeting Rob Puckett was co-opted onto the council following the resignation of Sue Willis. Rob was a councillor in his previous village before moving to Tideswell a couple of years ago, and brings valuable experience to the council.

A recent safety audit of the playgrounds has resulted in some replacement swings and further maintenance will be undertaken over the next few weeks to sort out a few issues that were highlighted.

Plans to take over the running of the public toilets in the centre of the village from Derbyshire Dales District Council are developing and we shall we soon be seeking tenders from interested parties wishing to undertake the refurbishment on our behalf.

Details of these tenders, and for repair work to the car park by the Town Head playground will be posted in the Parish Council notice board on the Coop wall.

In forthcoming issues of the Village Voice, there will be short profiles of the new council, so you know who are representing your interests in Tideswell.

Parish Council meetings are public meetings and you are cordially invited to attend to observer or for the first ten minutes of each meeting to bring any issues or concerns you may have to the council’s attention. Dates and times of meetings are posted on the Council notice board.

Tideswell Cinema

Oranges and Sunshine is Tideswell Cinema’s film choice for November, to

be shown on Thursday 21st at 7.30pm in the George.

This 2010 film is based on the true story of Nottingham social worker Margaret Humphreys, who uncovered and brought to the world’s attention one of the most significant social scandals of recent times. Between the 1940s and 1967 hundreds of thousands of British children, some as

young as 4 years, were forcibly separated from poor families and single mothers, and relocated in Australia and Canada. The deported children were promised oranges and sunshine, but instead they got hard labour and life in institutions.

The film is set in the 1980s and is a powerful and moving film.

Guest members are welcome (£4.75), and pre-film meals can be ordered at The George.

Stirrings in Tideswell

This month sees a tale of murder, bombs and intrigue in Tideswell Church.

On Wednesday 27th to Saturday 30th November (19.30) Tideswell Community Players perform The Stirrings in Sheffield on Saturday Night. This exciting play with songs, written by Alan Cullen, is set in Victorian Sheffield and based on the true story of the Sheffield Outrages, when workers and management clashed violently over new ways of working.

It tells the intriguing story of William Broadhead, who orchestrated attacks on people who did not support the cause, his downfall and eventual trial. The play uses different styles of theatre including drama, comedy, music hall, monologue, and traditional folk song. Think Oliver! combined with Les Mis! The staging makes the most of the atmospheric setting of the church.

The play has a very large cast of all ages, also featuring local musicians and singers. Chance is you’ll know at least one adult or child in the play. Performed frequently in the region since it was first staged at Sheffield Playhouse in the 1960s, the play is hugely entertaining, with an enduring appeal and relevance today. This will be the Tideswell event to catch this autumn.

Gripping drama, rousing songs, and comedy. Don’t miss it! Tickets £8 and £6 (concessions) from Tideswell P.O. and Litton Shop. Bookings on [email protected] and 01298 871063. For more information follow Tideswell Theatre on Facebook and Twitter or join the emailing list.

Duke’s Letter

The Duke of Devonshire wants to Mine in our Garden!

Yes, we thought it was a joke too. Land Registry wrote to us this week with a notice that The Most Noble Peregrine Andrew Morny, 12th Duke of Devonshire wanted to maintain the right to extract minerals, or to hold a market or a sporting event on our land (maybe jackdaw shooting or cat hunting?) The official letter was titled “a unilateral notice” and written in a legal style leading to a great degree of worry. The Duke’s solicitors eventually left a phone message to say it was just a formality. A formality for what?

Please do get in touch if you received a similar letter. Thank you

The Parish Council will be investigating the implications of these letters and will report in due course.

Community Kitchen Garden

I thought that the season would be nearly over when we got to October but this

month has been really busy.

At the beginning of October we were pleased to be part of the Harvest Festival in St John’s Church. We were able to fill the porch with produce, including a harvest of late strawberries as well as a lovely crop of pumpkins and squashes. A basket of the garden produce then became part of the raffle at the Harvest Supper.

One of the pumpkins went to the Tideswell Nursery School as the children planted the seeds way back in May, and one is to be used as part of the soup to be served at the 2 November Bonfire. A third pumpkin went all the way to London along with another basket of our garden produce as part of the Taste Tideswell Display at a BIG Lottery Event. And then on 19 October we had a stall at the Tideswell Surgery Open Day and were still able to harvest more produce from the garden: runner beans, leeks, chard, spinach, squash and herbs. Again, a basket of produce was one of the raffle prizes.

As the beds begin to clear, we’ve started digging over and planting green manure seeds and using our compost in preparation for another good season next year: we’re trying to get as much done before winter arrives. If you would like to become involved in any way with the garden please call Maureen (871542) or Judy (872408).

Litton Parish Matters

Unfortunately in October the Parish Council meeting took place after the

deadline for the Village Voice to receive my report and so this month my report is short and tells you what we will have considered at our October meeting rather than what has been agreed.

With winter on its way we will have considered how best the Council can provide salt supplies for the bins around the Parish. There are nine bins and a number of open piles. Derbyshire County Council is responsible for two bins ( Dale View in Litton and Cressbrook opposite the old school ) and the open piles ( Litton Slack ). The Parish Council is responsible for the other seven bins. In my next report I will explain how the Parish Council intends to provide salt cost effectively.

During our consultation meeting with residents in May, one of the issues raised was the maintenance of trees on the village greens and in the cemetery. In October we will have considered arrangements for implementing a programme of annual maintenance which could start this year. More on this in my next report.

Finally our advertisement for a permanent Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer was successful and we received a good response. When you read this report I hope that we will have been able to appoint from the short listed candidates and that I can introduce our new Clerk in my next report.

Best wishes to you all,

John Evans (Chair)

Living HistoryHow lucky we were to get the ‘History Box’ painted whilst the weather was still warm and dry. Our thanks to Nick Motley, I’m sure you will all agree the box looks so much better for a clean up and a coat of paint.

We understand the ‘Village Jungle Drums’ have been beating out the wrong information about the cost of the painting, IT HAS NOT COST £1k, but thank you for taking notice of the improvements and we ask you to look out for more to come in the near future.

The ‘Poetry Books’ are still available. Contact any member of the group and they will let you have one for £1.50. We have had so many ‘congratulations’ and ‘praises’ about the booklets that we are really overwhelmed by the general response. Many thanks to all who have bought one. Also many thanks to Glynis Hughes for selling them at her recent Coffee Morning held in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Charity.

Our next meeting is Friday 25th October 10 a.m at Vanilla Kitchen and then Friday 8th November; all are welcome.

Britten Singers

Along with many musicians all over the world Tideswell Singers are celebrating

the centenary of one of the greatest English composers, Benjamin Britten.

On Saturday 23 November we are delighted to join forces with The Hallam Choral Society, conducted by Peter Taylor, and accompanied by The Hallam Sinfonia in the northern premiere of “The World of the Spirit” which was written when Benjamin Britten was only 24.

Described at the time as technically brilliant, it was commissioned by the BBC in 1938, and because Britten’s output was so prolific, the cantata apparently disappeared during and after the war years, not being performed or broadcast again until it was revived by Radio 3 in 1995.

As Benjamin Britten was born on St Cecilia’s Day, 22 November 1913, we think highly appropriate to perform Gounod’s glorious and richly tuneful St Cecilia Mass as a closing piece.

Please join us at 7:30pm on Saturday 23 November at Ecclesall Parish Church, Sheffield, for this memorable occasion. Tickets (£12, £10 concessions, £5 students, accompanied under 16 free) are available from Tideswell Stores and Litton Shop.

Tideswell Singers is a mixed voice choir which enjoys performing a wide ranging repertoire and welcomes new members. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays in Litton Village Hall at 19.30. For more information please visit tideswellsingers.org.uk or call Carol Bowns 01298 213577

Bowl’d Over

You’re all invited to our coffee morning on 2nd Nov. between 1000 – 1200.

The club would like to say thanks to you who were brave enough to enter Diana Cameron’s ‘Occupations Quiz’, and thanks to those who did the hard work selling the sheets. We netted £267. What a lot of sleuths you are; we had to do a draw for the winners who were … Carol Jarvis from Cressbrook who trouser’d (I mean won) £20 & Jen Cox from Chapel who came 2nd & won £10. Drinks on you ladies, next time we meet. The answers are on the village notice board & our website.

Well, did we have fun at our Annual Dinner & Presentation recently? Apparently a good time was had by all… all those who could remember. Wain & Wright were up to their usual rascally tricks with quality entertainment.

Cunning Andrew Turner won the ‘The Roll a £1 Coin’ with his radio controlled one. He’ll be off to The Yorkshire Bridge clutching his £20 voucher in his grubby mitt.

Another innovation from the ever-inventive Dave Wain was the ‘Ten Worst Excuses for Bowling 2013.’ Just breaking into the top 10, Griff , with The Red Arrows fly past put me off. In at 9 a new entry from John Hallows with the church bells broke my concentration. None mover at 8, Dave Wain with myopia, poor lighting & I was crap.

At number 7, Vice-Captain Terry Shaw with ‘I was so surprised to hear Morris dancers in Tidza that I completely lost it’.

Down at 6, ‘I wore the wrong glasses’ by Roy Bradwell. On the way up at Number 5,

its Griff with the loud honking V formation of low flying Canada Geese that made me lose my line. Straight in at 4, Captain Ken Faucet with the classic ‘I thought they were only bringing 6 players so I didn’t practice’.

On the way down at number 3, John Hallows again with ‘I thought I had a rabbit (a not very good bowler) who was a county bowler’. This season’s number 2, Andrew Turner with ‘My opponent was stung by a wasp and I thought he was having a heart attack.’’

But it’s there again for 12 incredible weeks at the top of the chart this season’s Number 1, Chairman John Hallows with The Mat got stuck to my Foot. John won a well deserved prize of a big (really big) bright red boot with a bowling mat (quite small) stuck to it mounted on a small, but elegant pedestal. (these are really true!)

And now something about bowling – come to school to do indoor short mat from 6.30pm on Fri. evenings.
