From the Editor

Spring has finally sprung and we’ve long since forgotten what rain is and Tidza is

looking gorgeous in the sunshine. It won’t be too long now until we’re complaining about it being too hot!

So what do we have for you this month?

The village is looking for someone to coordinate the Poppy Collection in the village after Norman Gibbs’ sad death and there’s a call to arms about our slow broadband speeds too. If you remember when we first got it in the village, it actually arrived earlier than anticipated because of a concerted campaign from the village. Why should we get left behind, just because we live where we do?

There’s also arts galore in the village this month too, another open mic night (you don’t have to perform you know!) and the Spring production from the Tidza Players - another one not to be missed.

That’s it from me - time for a spot of sunbathing!

Singing for fun in Buxton

Local Vocals is Buxton’s Community Choir, meeting on Monday evenings in

the Buckingham Hotel. This is an informal

singing group run on a drop-in basis. Songs learned so far include traditional folk, Gospel, African chants and other world music, all providing opportunities for singing with style and harmonies.

As a community choir the main emphasis is on enjoyment for the participants rather than aiming for performance. Singing leader Carol Bowns encourages everyone to sing whatever age or ability, and there is no need to be able to read music as Carol has developed teaching styles which help us learn together. When necessary words are displayed on a screen. Singing gives an emotional and physical experience which ‘Local Vocals’ would like to share.

New members are always welcome; it’s great value at £5 per session. There are no auditions or other requirements, simply a willingness to have a go and a wish to enjoy singing with others. Our next meetings will be on Monday evenings, 2 and 16 April from 7.30 to 9pm.

For more information contact Carol Bowns on 01298 213577 or [email protected] or visit www.localvocals.org.uk

Singers in Bakewell

The Richard Roddis Singers give their annual Spring Concert at Bakewell

Parish Church on Friday 13th April 2012 at 7.30pm. Well-known for their expert and enthusiastic singing, they have a lightweight programme this year to welcome in the Spring. They will sing a lively and joyous Cantate Domino composed by their conductor Richard Roddis, commissioned last year by the VoiceBox in Derby. It will include percussion played by young next-generation members!

Clive Pollard and Philip Robinson will provide piano duet accompaniment for two works: a John Clare Cantata by Malcolm Arnold, and Nonsense – entertaining verse by Mervyn Peake, set to music by Richard Rodney Bennett. These and some

light-hearted songs and arrangements – and a fun piece by Clive – make up their delightful and engaging programme. Tickets £8 on the door.

In His Steps

Good Friday is the special day when we remember Jesus’ sacrifice on the

cross out of love for us all. Come along to the Parish Church at 10am on 6th for a short informal Family Service, where we will follow in the steps of the final days of Jesus’ life on earth - and experience the true meaning of Easter Day.

Whether you are familiar with church or not do come along, whatever your age - and there will be Hot Cross Buns at the end!.

Tidza Ramblers’ Cowslip Walk

A small group of hardy walkers ventured out onto Shatton Moor for last

month’s ramble. Although it was sleeting, a good pace kept us warm and cheerful. A pair of curlews calling to one another as they dodged the snowflakes was the only wildlife we saw!

‘ Yet soon fair Spring shall give another scene.

And yellow cowslips gild the level green.’

We hope to enjoy this scene around Taddington but the date of the walk this month will depend on nature. It could be the 15th but more likely the 22nd. Just contact me nearer the time. Meet as usual at 10 am with packed lunch at Cherry Tree Square.

Tideswell Living History

We recently approached Tideswell Parish Council and asked them to

consider ‘adopting’ the Red Telephone Kiosk in Fountain Square on our behalf and the good news is the adoption from BT has been approved. We intend to put this to good use and it will be regularly maintained and become an important feature in our project and indeed our village.

We will also have some more ‘good news’ to share with you in the very near future, so please ‘watch this space’ and why not come along to our next meeting which will be on Friday 27th April at Vanilla Kitchen 10 am you will be most welcome and we are on the ‘look out’ for more helpers and volunteers with our forthcoming ‘Memories Day’ to be held on Wednesday 9th May at a venue to be announced.

We are holding our next social evening on Wednesday 18th April at The George Hotel 7.30 pm and invite any new people who are interested in our project to come along for a nosey and find out what we are all about.

Remember – Your memories are an important part of the heritage of our village – so lets preserve and archive them for our future generations.

Outstanding Flagg

The Governors, Staff, Children and Parents of Flagg Nursery School are

delighted to announce that we have again achieved an Ofsted rating of Outstanding! Flagg Nursery School was inspected in January and we are absolutely delighted with the outcome.

We feel that ‘Outstanding’ accurately reflects the superb facilities, well trained, professional staff, enthusiastic children and supportive families who make up our school community. Mrs Sarah Brown, Acting Headteacher, is proud that the inspectors recognised the excellent progress that children attending the Nursery make, and the stimulating teaching delivered by our dedicated staff.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who in large or small ways help to make Flagg Nursery School an exceptional place to learn.

At Flagg Nursery School we recognise the importance of visits and visitors to enhance the curriculum and bring subjects

and learning to life. This term we have had visits from:

Buxton Mountain Rescue

Mini-olympians Sports coaching

our local Community Police Officers

a farmer with his lambs

our local Postal worker

a Librarian

Buxton Fire and Rescue

April sees the start of the New Year for the 200+ Club, the main fundraiser for the Tideswell & District Community Association.

We do hope that those who are already members will renew for the forthcoming year, and that many others will come forward to join and help raise money for our community.

The cost is £1 per month which also makes you a member of the Association and gives you entry into the monthly draw.

When the Club was started there were over 200 members but over the years the number has dropped to 184. The Lottery Licensing Authority requires by law that at least 20% of the money raised from each draw is retained by the Association for use in the community. This means that we have had to review the number and value of prizes and there will now be one £25 prize, one £20 prize and three £10 prizes every month and an additional £50 prize in February, April, June, August, October and December.

If membership increases again then we may be able to review the number and value of prizes upwards.

The collectors will shortly be contacting the current members to make arrangements for the New Year.

If you would like to join for the first time please contact Judy Cooke on 01298 872408 or Dorothy Whitehouse on 01298 871661.

It would be most helpful to the small group of collectors if you could pay by direct debit through your bank (ask your

Page 13: April 2012 - The Village Voice

collector for a form to complete) or pay the full amount by cheque or cash in one sum.

If any local groups feel they would benefit from a small grant from the Association to enable them to improve their service please contact our secretary Mrs Sandra Howard on 872167 so your application may be considered by the committee.

WELCOME PACK UPDATING

I am currently updating the Tideswell & District Community Association “Welcome Pack” which is aimed at providing local information to newcomers and people staying in holiday properties in the village and surrounding district.

If any information in your business advert or the contact details, meeting place, etc. for organisations has changed please let me know.

If you have not previously advertised in the pack and wish to, all you need to do is supply 20 A4 or A5 flyers or business cards with up to date information to be included.

There is no charge for local clubs, societies etc. or businesses sending revisions but there is a small charge of £10 for businesses submitting details the first time.

If you require more details or wish to tell me about changes please give me a ring on 01298 871661 or email me at [email protected] as soon as possible.

CAFE TIDZAOn 26th February, St John’s Institute was the venue for a national Coffee Shop Tour evening, being presented by well known Christian performers Philippa Hanna and Roo Walker. Not their first visit to our village, and popular with many.

The hall was transformed into a charming cafe, with flowers, candles, and the most wonderful array of cakes, coffees and an abundance of different teas!

The room was very soon choc-a-bloc, with hardly an inch to move, as talented musician Roo Walker kicked off the evening. Philippa Hanna charmed the crowd with her beautiful voice, and interspersed the songs, many that she had written herself, with tales of her childhood dreams, rebellious teenage years, and how she came to believe in God.

It was a night to remember, and thanks to all who came and donated £100, which has been sent to Compassion, an organisation that helps children and families in poorer parts of the world.

Parish Council Matters

No members of the public were present. Pc Phil Maycock from

Bakewell Police Station attended and gave the following report:

The theft of Landrovers especially Defenders has increased, although crime in general across the area has reduced by 12.7% and anti-social behaviour by 23.2%

The ringmaster service is now called Derbyshire Alert. The Neighbourhood Watch scheme is under review, coordinators and members are wanted in the Tideswell area. The Neighbourhood Watch AGM is to be held on Wed 28th March at 2pm in the Town Hall at Bakewell. Pc Maycock also reported that the funding for the Youth Club by Derbyshire County Council will be withdrawn in the autumn.

Other Council Matters:There was no further update on the public toilets.

The Parish Council are looking for tenders for the summer planting in the village, written quotes are to be sent to the Clerk.

Two quotes were submitted for the grass mowing of Richard Lane and Townhead playgrounds for 2012.

New signs are to be installed at the three recreation grounds.

The new grit bin (full of grit) has been stolen from Wheston Bank during February and the new water butt at the Cemetery has also been stolen. If you have any information regarding these thefts, please contact the Clerk.

A list of future Parish Council Meetings is to be put on the notice board.

Please note the next meeting will be on the 2nd of April and not the 9th, 7.15pm in the Library.

Kath Lees on behalf of Tideswell Parish Council.

Is Tidza too slow? Is Tideswell being left behind in the digital age?

If you run a business from Tideswell, enjoy keeping in touch with relatives by Skype or like using BBC iPlayer you will know the need for a fast and reliable internet connection. You have probably heard of upgrades to the infrastructure of major cities that will guarantee super fast broadband rates. Sadly rural areas are in danger of falling further behind our neighbouring cities.

I occasionally complain to my Internet Service Provider about the broadband service they provide. I am usually told that my limited service has something to do with the distance between our house and the local BT exchange. I might believe this if it weren’t for the fact that there are times when my service is nearly acceptable and other times when a carrier pigeon would seem like a better option. I don’t have sufficient technical knowledge to know what needs to be done to improve the service to the village but I do know when I’m being fobbed off with an excuse that doesn’t stack up.

If you share my concerns and would like to club together to put pressure on ISPs to improve our service and explore other ways in which we could improve the data rates entering Tideswell then please contact me by email on [email protected]. I will then get a group together to discuss our options and perhaps invite a technical expert to give us some advice.

Tideswell Running Club

We meet every Wednesday at 7pm, outside The Star public house

in Tideswell. Our goal is to get people running, regardless of their experience or speed. Whether you are a seasoned runner or racer, or a complete beginner, we aim to cater for your ambitions and needs. Each Wednesday we lead two running groups: one group that runs approximately 6 miles in a hour - or more, if you are a faster runner and complete more turn-backs; and a second group that aims to help people get into running, either via a walk-run session or a shorter and slower paced continuous run, depending on the individuals present.

Race reports

March saw the club running all over the place.

Helen Grainger ran the No Walk in the Park 5k in Chesterfield on the 3/3/12, the weather was much better this time and she pushed as hard as she with the aim of getting under 20 mins for the 5k race Unfortunately she missed the target but ran an amazing PB in 20.16

Closer to home saw Paul Weir and Ben Brindley run the Grindleford Gallop on the 10th March, Ben finished this challenging 21 mile off road race in 3:25:18 and Paul Weir ran 3:55:40

Whilst on Sunday 11th Philippa Hunstone raced the Dronfield 10k where she finished in 53.03.

Even closer to home, just to prove we don’t just race and do encourage beginners. Two complete beginners have managed to run with us for the past 4

weeks and both now regularly run 3 miles with out stopping well done Marie and Kathryn.

Paul Weir Tideswell Running Club Chairman

Minibus Driver Training

Does your local group or organisation own and run a minibus or have

volunteers that would like to drive for your group? If so, Bakewell & Eyam Community Transport (BECT) can offer short, specialist training sessions to make sure your members are transported with care and safety.

The training forms part of the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS), the nationally recognised training and assessment programme for minibus drivers in the voluntary and not-for-profit sectors. We provide practical and theory sessions so that drivers are familiar with their vehicles and understand how to drive up to 16-seat vehicles safely and care for their passengers. The training can be tailor made to fit in with your availability and cover fully accessible vehicles as well as regular minibuses.

Once trained you can also become a volunteer driver for Bakewell & Eyam Community Transport. Offer as much or as little time as you want, fitting it around your own availability, but either way you will still help us to continue to provide a valuable service to the many community groups in the area who use us year-round. There is likely to be an upsurge in demand for group transport this summer, for instance, as communities plan special Diamond Jubilee events. Please contact us on 01629 641920 or e-mail [email protected] for more information.

Tideswell Theatre

If you’re reading this at the end of March you might just be in time to catch tickets

for Thin Air, Cotton Grass Theatre’s tale of flight, ambition, and lost airmen on the Dark Peak moors. It comes well recommended and stops off in Tideswell on its tour up and down the country. 7:30pm on Thursday 29th March at The Old Grammar School. Tickets £8 and £6 (concessions).

A Racing CertTideswell Community Players’ spring production is a great comedy called Ladies’ Day, by Nottingham based writer Amanda Whittington.

Firmly in the tradition of observational comedies like Dinner Ladies it is about four ordinary women who take a day out from their jobs as fish packers in Hull to visit the races at Royal Ascot.

Directed by Anthony Gill it has four lovely ladies in hats and colourful outfits, snappy dialogue, lots of laughs, and piles of fish!

The show has had a cult following since first performed by Hull Truck and was their most successful show. Performed in the former United Reformed Church on Parke Road, expect colourful characters, spectacular pageantry and marvellous millinery, as this classic comedy explores friendships and lives. As there are plans to sell the building, this could be the last performance in the building. 7:30pm Thursday 26 to Saturday 28 April. Tickets £8 and £6 (concs).

DrumtasticTideswell Church was packed to see and hear Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers in their show The Way of The Drum on

10th March. This was a real sell-out show: fantastic atmosphere, spectacle, colour, humour and amazing drumming all in the magnificent setting of the parish church. More tickets were sold than for any other of our visiting shows. Sadly there was a lot more demand for the show than we had tickets available, but we hope to bring at least one show a year to the village which has pull enough to fill a large space like the church. If you have any suggestions for shows there, or anywhere else in the village please make contact now.

Guisers RebornThe Tidza Guisers are dusting off masks and cows heads and thinking of Wakes. You may have seen them on the streets in past years. They’re looking for new recruits and ways of making the tales of old Tideswell more eye-catching and more in the guising and mumming tradition. Make contact now if you’d like to be involved in colourful and loud street performance.

Honey Man in TideswellThe Honey Man, New Perspectives Theatre Company’s latest show calls in on Tideswell in its national tour on Thursday 10th May. It’s a mysterious tale of friendship and the past seeming to catch up with the present. Tickets £9.50 and £7.50 (concessions). Brought to the village through Live and Local. More information next time and at www.newperspectives.co.uk.

Tickets: All tickets from Tideswell Post Office and Litton Shop. Bookings email theatre@tideswell net or phone 01298 871063.

MS @ Vanilla Kitchen

With our entertainer selling giraffes in Birmingham and our lycra spotter

taking a sojourn to Chatsworth, we thought we were a little down on numbers this month however we were delighted to welcome our first visitor from Bradwell and also Hazel who will soon be the MS Society’s support volunteer for the High Peak.

So around steaming lattes and many a mocha we chattered away. Our chats included bacon and egg rolls, exercise classes and donating organs (that’s body parts not musical instruments!) Most enjoyable and informative as usual.

Our next gathering is on Saturday 21st April at Vanilla Kitchen in the parlour from 10-30 to 12.00. Also please make a note of our forthcoming MS Society annual fundraising Cake Bake on Friday 11th from 10.30 at Tideswell Surgery on Parke Road. All welcome

The Sing Cycle

After the tremendous success of Come & Sing Fauré Requiem, Tideswell

Singers are anticipating another triumph with their next project Sing & Cycle, on Friday 29th June. This falls at a busy time as it is during Wakes Week and is the day the Olympic Torch is in the area. We are hoping to make this event part of the Olympic celebrations in Bakewell.

Our contribution will start with a cycle ride along the Monsal Trail with Tideswell Singers stopping at strategic points to

sing. Local school children will also be involved. Watch this space for more details - meetings about arrangements are in progress as we go to press.

Tideswell Singers is a small, friendly choir, open to all with no auditions. We aim to perform to a high standard but we do not take ourselves too seriously. We are joined together by our enjoyment of singing and performing. New singers would be made very welcome.

We rehearse Wednesday 19:30 - 21:30 in Litton Village Hall. For more information please visit our website www.tideswellsingers.org.uk or call Carol Bowns: 01298 213577.

Wear your seatbelt?

An operation on dangerous or unsafe driving on the A623 saw eleven

motorists stopped for not wearing their seatbelts.

Police officers joined forces with VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) and HM Revenue and Customs to check drivers were road safe and legal on the Housley and Foolow stretch of the road.

The checks took place on Tuesday, March 13 as part of Operation Safe Drive to make drivers aware of road safety issues.

Four drivers were also stopped for using their mobile phones and two drivers were pulled in for speeding offences.

VOSA issued five prohibitions to vehicles which were found to have dangerous defects, one was immediate, three were delayed and one was given to a vehicle which was breaching weight restrictions.

Taste Tideswell news

The School of Food continues to develop, and the great start we had to

the beginning of the year with advanced bookings seems to be continuing. Most courses are either full or nearly full and people are coming far and wide to learn how to cook, brew beer or to learn the finer arts of beer, sausage or wine tasting.

After just over 12 months filling a much-needed gap, our Ops Manager, Juliet Waugh, is returning to her old freelance life, and we recently appointed Lisa Wilson, who many of you will know through with involvement with the church and the film club, to replace her.

Joining her will be Joe Hunt, who joins as Head Tutor. Joe is second chef at Hassop Station and a popular freelance chef at the school. Joe’s job will be to teach on many of our courses and to help Kim and Lisa develop new and exciting courses.

The School of Food is entering an exciting phase and we are looking forward to welcoming Lisa and Joe to the fold.

The Kitchen GardenWorked started at the end of March to finish off the landscaping of the garden behind the Institute. The hard landscaping work will make the area much safer to work on and repair some of the walls that are in poor repair. The PCC and Taste Tideswell are jointly funding this work.

Three of TT’s fabulous volunteers, Maureen, Judy and Helen are taking the kitchen garden by the scruff of its neck and over the next few weeks will make it something to be proud of.

There will be regular working parties for anyone who’d like to get involved. They’re looking for gardeners or those who want to learn more about gardening to come forward and lend a hand. Call Maureen (871542 )or Judy (872408) if you’re interested on 872408.

New DirectorsTaste Tideswell has come along way in a short time. As mentioned in March’s VV we held an open evening at the end of March for prospective new directors for TT who can help take the project to the next stage. The current directors are very conscious that they have been involved from the very beginning and might not have the full range of skills to develop the project and the business into a fully sustainable one that benefits the whole village.

We’ve also been very conscious that since we started the School of Food has taken the bulk of our time and energy. Whilst that’s been perfectly justifiable because without a profitable school, we wouldn’t be able to fund the community work we want to do we feel the time is right to look again at what we set out to achieve and regenerate our community based projects.

With the careful selection of new directors (and we haven’t closed the books yet so please come forward if you think you have something to contribute), we are looking forward to a more visible presence throughout Tideswell and District.

If you want to chat through our plans, to volunteer or to vent your spleen, I’m always happy to listen and pass on your views.

Pete Hawkins, Chair TT

Get Balanced

Most people see their dentist every six months and clean their teeth every

day – when actually if necessary all their teeth can be replaced. However not many people consider their spinal health in the same way and yet it is not yet medically possible or desirable to replace one’s spine when it starts getting worn out.

Building good posture is so important and yet a lot of people wait for things to go wrong before they start considering their backs. Do you ache by the end of the day or you feel like your chin is poking forward and your upper back is becoming humped, or perhaps you know you spend most of the day sitting in front of the computer.

If the answer is YES to any of these then please start to address your posture; it’s easy to straighten up and stand tall, but it is much harder to stay there. The major reason is a lack of CORE STRENGTH. Good core strength is what gives your body the support it needs to achieve good posture. As people hit their 40’s and 50’s the spine gradually begins to give in to the pull of gravity, the shoulders become rounded, the upper chest caves in and the chin pokes out.

The key is to strengthen both back and stomach muscles in a way that also includes balance and coordination. For best results, corrective postural exercises must engage the whole trunk musculature in an integrated, holistic way.

Come along to a ‘Back-On-Balance’ session and ‘Move better – Feel Better’. The classes are held on Tuesday evening between 7:00 till 8:00pm & 8:00 till 9:00pm and Thursday

mornings between 9:15 till 10:15am & 10:15 till 11:15am. Or if you feel you want individual attention come along to my BACK-ON-BALANCE CLINIC on a Tuesday between 10:30 and 3pm where I will give advice, help & exercise to improve your spinal health.

Back-On-Balance is a class that has developed over the last 15 years; it includes exercises, stretches and techniques that I have learnt after attaining a BA (Hons) in Physical Education, a BSc (Hons) in Human Science, an MSc (chiropractic) and my RSA to music. I have been working as a chiropractor since 2001, setting up programmes of rehabilitation for people with back problems and whiplash injuries. On a personal level I have had an interest in Yoga, swimming and generally keeping fit to stay ahead of my 4 children!.....If you feel that back-on-balance could help you then come along and see if you find it beneficial I look forward to seeing you there.

Dales Council Tax Freeze

After making £1.3 million savings last year, Derbyshire Dales District Council has

planned additional savings of £1.2 million in the next three years through a combination of measures, including reducing employee costs and continuing a comprehensive review of spending across all its services.

The result for residents is that their Council Tax is to be frozen for the second year, with the average bill for Derbyshire Dales’ services maintained at £189.66 per year, equivalent to a weekly bill of £3.65, or just over 50p per household per day.

The Complete guide to - Cattle Passports

According to the Rural Payments Agency over 80% of animal

movements are now reported electronically.

The British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) started issuing single page passports on 1 August 2011 which should accompany the animal when it moves. These are to be used for all animals born after this date.

They will not replace the passport books already in use unless they are sent in for changes and re issued.

All births, deaths and movements for animals on the single page passports must be reported either electronically or by telephone.

Reporting movements electronically saves you time and paperwork and it is available 24/7. By working online, you can be

confident that all records are accurate and that you will receive your passports with no delays.

The BCMS runs the online service called the Cattle Tracing System (CTS) database. CTS Online is simple, efficient and free.

If you want help setting up your details to use this service but don’t know who to ask then look no further. Jude Pealing of Bagshaws will be at the Farming Life Centre on Thursday 5th April for one to one appointments to help you through the registration process and show you what information you can get from CTS online.

To book your place for a FREE and confidential session on the 5th April call the Farm Life Centre on 01298 85162.

At t’Flicks

Nominated for four Oscars in 2012, including Best Picture, Tideswell

Cinema’s ‘bonus’ film this season is “The Help”. A wonderful book has been made into a spectacular film, and was an immediate box office hit.

Set in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi, it is about a young white woman, Skeeter, and her relationship with two black maids during the Civil Rights era in America. Having been away to university, Skeeter returns to her home town, and becomes increasingly uncomfortable with the attitude of her

friends towards their ‘help’, or maid, and decides to write a book. However, with the atmosphere of the times, it is extremely risky for any black woman to speak about her experiences working in a

‘white’ home - especially to a white woman. Skeeter eventually manages to persuade some of the local maids to help her.

The film gives a fascinating insight into some of the issues of this unhappy period of history, and will be shown on Thursday 26th April at 7.30pm, in The George. Guest Membership for

the evening - the last in the current season - is available for £4.75, and the landlord of The George offers 20% discount off meals taken before the film.

Tideswell History Club

Bradda Exposed

On March 8th, the History Club was asked to look again at the old familiar

buildings in our village and note any unusual features. Our speaker was Mr. John Riddall on “the Architecture of a Peakland Village”. He was actually talking about his home village of Bradwell, but many times he referred to the “wonderful architecture in Tideswell”. It seems that Bradwell has only 9 listed buildings whereas Tideswell has 137 --quite remarkable!

He described Bradwell in the old days as being “a very democratic village”, because it had no church, no squirearchy and therefore, no big house to rule over them. It did though, have many chapels belonging to the dissenters and these would encourage a sense of independence. However, many of the houses were quite poor because they belonged to equally poor lead miners and agricultural workers etc.

He pointed out cottages where there were only tiny windows on the North (ie. cold) side, but decent sized windows on the South side. Also shown were buildings where the sides and corners

were “sprung” off boulders or bedrock (no need for foundation trenches there!). In Bradwell, there are hardly any older houses with stone mullions in the windows - they couldn’t afford such finery, in fact, one or two houses have only wooden lintels above the bedroom windows.

Mr. Riddall stated that nearly all our houses built before 1874 would have “grey - slate” (sandstone flag) roofs. 1874 was the year of the opening of Millers Dale

station when the blue - slates from North Wales could be easily imported into this area. These much lighter slates meant that the roof timbers could be made far less massive.

He also pointed out that when modern extensions are built in keeping with the original building, very often you don’t notice them “because they are right”. Perhaps the most remarkable item was his description of a “Gibbs

Doorway” named after Sir James Gibbs in which the Quoins (French for corner) are arranged in the pattern shown in the diagram. How many of these do we have in Tidsa’s fair town?

Our next meeting should also be very interesting when Keith Blood talks about “the Bamford Dams” at the Institute on April 12th at 8pm. Everyone is very welcome to join us.

Brian Woodall
