Apologies if the September issue arrives late through your door. Not the fault
of our valiant team of folders, who risk monthly injury and repetitive strain injury folding the VV for you. Nor is it the fault of the hardy deliverers who brave storm and tempest to bring each exciting issue to you. Nope, all my fault cos I chose to go on holiday just at the wrong time.
Fully refreshed from a week in the fabulous mountain of the Picos de Europa in Spain (and the vibrant and exciting city of Bilbao - now they have a music festival even Tidza would struggle to pull off!) I bring you September’s issue of the Voice.
Lots of fab things going off in the village the highlight of which must be the inaugural National Theatre showing (and the extra date because it’s been so popular). I’m definitely looking forward to that one. Hope to see you there.

Bishop Pursglove Foundation is a charity which has a small amount of money
available each year to distribute as grants to students at university or colleges of higher education (18+), to help with the cost of books or equipment relevant to their course. The charity’s requirement is that the student’s home when not away at university is in the parish of Tideswell, Litton, Cressbrook, Millers Dale, Wheston, Wormhill or Peak Dale.

The Peak District National Park Authority would welcome people’s
views on its first management plan for four recreational trails used by thousands of walkers, cyclists and horse-riders each year.
A six-week public consultation on the draft five-year plan is now under way, and people have until September 17 to give their feedback on www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/looking-after/trailsplan
The four trails, owned and managed by the Authority, are all former railway lines with a relatively flat terrain that offers easy access and traffic-free enjoyment.
• Monsal Trail, 8.5 miles from Bakewell to Wyedale, near Buxton.
• Tissington Trail, 13 miles from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay, near Hartington
• High Peak Trail, 10.5 miles from south of Buxton to Longcliffe, near Wirksworth
• Thornhill Trail, a short two-mile stretch near the Upper Derwent Valley.
The draft management plan was drawn up with the help of user-groups in a series of workshops over the past year, plus a Trails Saturday when trail-users were asked to fill in surveys.
Trails manager Abi Ball said: “Given the importance of the trails to local people and visitors, we’d like to give people the opportunity to comment on the plan. Any comments should be emailed to me at [email protected]”

VOLUNTEERING...is a dirty word for some.
Wasn’t it wonderful to see the many happy volunteers helping to make the 2012 Olympic Games the great success it was? Weren’t you proud to be British?
“Volunteering is for the retired, those with time on their hands.” This was levelled at me recently.
Totally untrue. Those Games Makers were from all walks of life and of all ages. They all enjoyed their “jobs” meeting, greeting and helping strangers.
My parents were both teachers who, in their “spare“ time, helped to run our village youth club – for free. They passed on their community work ethic to me and my sister. Now my children, both in full time employment, are involved in running sports clubs for the children in their communities. We all enjoy meeting new people and working along side them - and we are not unusual.
Without people willing to give time to our community of Tideswell, there would be no cubs, guides, wells dressings, bonfire and fireworks displays, flowers in troughs and gardens,Tideswell Cinema and Theatre, Community Association, Sports Clubs, Parish Council, Wakes Week............. What a dull place this vibrant village would become!
Time is precious to everyone. But even the odd hour of your time would enable many of our village groups to continue to function. Volunteering is in fact very rewarding.

Our next Get Together is on Saturday 15th September, 10:30-12:00 in the Ice
Cream parlour at Vanilla Kitchen.
One might ask why we have called our Get together a “Get together” and not a meeting? Well the answer is that we don’t have an iota of formality. We are simply a bunch of people, usually about 6-8 of us, both men and women, from 30s+. Our common factors are the bizarrenesses of Multiple Sclerosis and that we live near Tideswell! We are as happy to discuss MS as we are not to. In fact at the last meeting the topic of MS didn’t even come up; one might have been forgiven for thinking it was Tideswell’s Liza Minnelli fan club!
So if you have MS and are interested in coming along, you would be made most welcome. Just pop along or give me a call beforehand.

There were raised voices as I approached the meter at Surprise View car park
where I’d gone to check out the route prior to last month’s walk. My heart sank when I found out that this meter only accepts credit cards however an obliging person used her plastic and I handed over my coins gratefully.
We were lucky with the weather again on the day of the walk and enjoyed looking at
the fort Carl Wark, climbing up to Higger Tor, then having lunch near Burbage Bridge.
Colourful caterpillars interested our flora and fauna expert who informed us that the bright green Emperor moth can smell a female of its species up to six miles away!
Some of the larger stone formations in this area are named - Mother Cap for example. Children would enjoy giving their own names to many of the other unusual shapes and, with two ice cream vans en route, it would be a good walk for them.
Rain began minutes before the end but we just quickened our pace to avoid putting on waterproofs.
The group is beginning its second year and we look forward to many more enjoyable walks.

Broken Window
Would the person responsible for breaking the door window at Verona
House, Queen Street on Sunday August 19th between 12.30 and 1 am, and found it amusing, please have the decency to come forward, apologise and pay for damages.
The police were called at the time of the incident. I wasn’t amused by it. I was coming back from a well-earned break and had to come back to this. Since February I have been looking after my son who is, for the moment, in remission from cancer.

Reduced price alarms
Residents and business owners in the Derbyshire Dales are being offered
discounted driveway alarms to help deter thieves.
The wireless alarms are being made available at local police stations. They usually cost between £30 and £35 but are being sold at £20 to residents.
The alarms are being promoted by the Safety Partnership - which is led by Derbyshire Dales District Council and the police.
When triggered the battery-operated infrared driveway alarms activates a portable alarm that can be carried anywhere in the house up to a maximum of 90 metres away. No wiring is necessary and all the outdoor parts are fully waterproof.
A Safer Neighbourhood Policing spokesman said: “The Derbyshire Dales has a great reputation as a safe place to live and do business and this driveway alarms initiative is just one of the measures local people can
take to make life as difficult as possible for criminals.”

Derbyshire residents are being encouraged to help shape a new
health and social care watchdog which will make sure their views are considered when services are planned and delivered.
Healthwatch is a new service set up by the Government which from April 2013 will allow local people to influence, challenge and get involved in the planning of health and social care services.

Holiday Cottages
I read the letter regarding ‘Holiday Cottages” in the August edition with great
interest.
There are a large number of holiday cottages in the village and whilst these people do not join the cricket club or darts team, they do contribute a lot to the village especially when they shop, eat in the pubs, and mingle with us locals.
There is, however, a far greater evil than holiday cottages. I recently spent some time in North Norfolk, where up to 50% of the properties in some villages are “Second Homes” owned by people who buy them just to have a holiday for a four weeks a year. For the rest of the year these houses lie empty. And guess what, there are some of these in Tideswell. This is what deprives local people of a place to live and contributes almost nothing to the local economy.
It is a shame when these people could probably afford a holiday in a luxury hotel for a month for what it costs to maintain a “second home’ for a year, however these homes have an investment value!
I am not sure where your other contributor is coming from - but I don’t even own one home, I rely on DDDC for the roof over my head, like many others of us.

Response from David Brindley, Chair of Visit TideswellWhilst I fully recognise the points made by “Name Withheld” about the potential impact of holiday cottages on a village, they
are not acknowledging the importance of tourism to the economy of Tideswell. Visitors to the village contribute hugely to the revenue of our shops, pubs and eateries – this spend is a major factor in helping our high street survive. And all the residents of Tideswell benefit from this.
The Visit Tideswell group are a not-for-profit group of accommodation owners who mostly live in the village and who want the village to thrive. We do a lot to encourage our visitors to spend money in the local economy and get involved in village life whilst they are here. We actively promote village activities through events listings on our website. We fund the production of the Tideswell Trials – which encourage visitors to explore the village, rather than simply park up and go walking.
We would welcome the thoughts and ideas from others in the village about how we could do more to encourage our visitors to be more “community minded” whilst they are here. Our next meeting is on Monday 10th September at 7.30pm (upstairs at The George). All are welcome to come and share their ideas with Visit Tideswell members and the committee.

TIDESWELL CINEMA
Tideswell Cinema’s new season opens with the winner of five Oscars - the
much acclaimed silent movie “The Artist”, on Thursday 27th September. This comedy-drama is set in 1927, and depicts the dawn of ‘talkies’ and the decline of the silent movie era.
George Valentin is a Hollywood matinee idol, loving the spotlight that his fame brings, and enjoying the success of his latest silent film. Peppy Miller, an aspiring young actress, literally runs into his life by planting a kiss on his cheek at the film’s Premiere - an action caught by press photographers and followed by the headline “Who is this girl?” Valentin helps launch her as a star, but soon the arrival of talking pictures sends their
careers in opposite directions, and turns George’s world upside down.
The film will be shown at 7.30pm upstairs at the George. Members can take their seats from 7pm, Guest Members (£4.75) can fill the remaining seats from 7.15pm.
The new venture of Live Screenings from The National Theatre and The Royal Opera House has been very enthusiastically received, and tickets for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night,-time on September 6th, sold out immediately.

Parish Council Matters
No members of the public attended the August meeting.
In line with national guidelines, a new Code of Conduct was adopted. It was unanimously decided that Tideswell would adopt the NALC Code of Conduct. All members present submitted forms giving pecuniary interests.
An acknowledgement had been received from Derbyshire Dales DC regarding the Public Toilets, but no further information had been received. The old Public Phone Box is to assume its new role now we have been successful in our lottery bid. The parish council purchased the Box for Tideswell for £1. Other finance was discussed and the council’s liabilities paid.
The appraisals for council staff have taken place and subsequent meetings with the staff, Chairman Philip Swarbrick, Vice Chairman Sue Barber and Parish Clerk Lesley Bramwell had proven constructive.
Once again the cemetery was a cause for concern. It is now many years since the parish council of the day erected the notice asking members of the public to respect the burial ground. Over the past few months the guttering on the building, together with the water butts has been stolen. The water butts, replaced quite recently, have been stolen again. A temporary butt, kindly donated by a resident, is in place until yet another one is positioned. The council spends time , money and effort in maintaining the cemetery, but is battling against the odds. Recently the following have been removed from the site: An old door, domestic kitchen units, batteries,
tyres,household rubbish, garden waste and building waste. This is not only costly to remove but is disrespectful to the memory of those buried there and distressing to the bereaved. Please, if any readers witness any dumping, would they report it to the council. A wheelie bin is provided for use at the site.
A different problem has been that of monuments being wrongly positioned. Again, this is distressing for relatives of the deceased, and problematic for the Council. Some plots have been excavated by using a mini-digger which has smashed curb stones surrounding the plots.
The playground group reported that the Richard Lane ground was now refurbished and holes filled in.
Pruning of one of the larger overhanging trees is to allow the memorial tree to receive more light.
The planting of the flowerbeds continues, and many favourable comments have been received about the Bank Square/Gratton Garden. The volunteers who donate plants, and the volunteers who plant them, make Tideswell a pleasing place to live and deserve our thanks. Similarly, the Community Association’s efforts in organising the competition for the red, white & blue theme for hanging baskets have brightened many a dull wet unseasonable day this summer.

Can you help us? B&ECT Community Car Scheme is looking for volunteers. We currently provide a one to one transport which helps people who have a transport need due to age, illness, mobility or timetable restrictions.
Some of the places we take local residents are GPs, podiatrists, opticians, dentists, hairdressers, solicitors, alternative and complementary therapists, hospitals but we would like to be able to offer more.
We have an incredible band of volunteer drivers who give their time and support to our organisation – we would love it if you could join them!
This is a really flexible volunteering opportunity – all you need is a car, three year’s driving experience and a bit of time. We ask for no regular commitment. We contact volunteers weekly to ask their availability. We need help with local journeys as well as trips to hospitals and towns.
In return you will receive reimbursement towards the costs of running your car, training and support from our office team and most of all the gratitude and thanks from people who otherwise would not be able to travel.

Local residents may be aware that there are a number of flats, owned by Dales
Housing, in Tideswell. These are for people aged 55 and over and are designated as ‘sheltered accommodation’.
This term is often misunderstood and can conjure up an image of an interfering warden calling round at all hours. The modern Supported Housing service is very different and tailored to the needs of the individual.
Residents can benefit from a regular visit from a Sheltered Housing Officer but the frequency is determined by the customer. There is also 24 hour emergency cover facility, where residents can summon help at the touch of a button.
Dales Housing’s properties are not just for the unemployed or those on benefits. Many tenants are in full time employment or have owned their own property. Rent is competitive and is an affordable housing choice. Our properties are also repaired and maintained to a very high standard, which can compare very favourably to private rented accommodation.
There is currently one property available in Tideswell. It is a one bedroomed, upstairs flat, near to public transport routes. The August meeting was enthusiastically enjoyed, as Ian Taylor presented a
puzzling chart for members to interpret. He gave the carbohydrate values, protein,fat and other details of a range of common foods, which members tried to identify. Some of the results were surprising, some hilarious, but a serious message was learned in an innovative way. Ian will lead the group on a walk around the Goyt Valley on Aug 9th. Meeting at Goyts Lane car park, at 6.00pm, the walk takes 2 hours.
The next meeting is the Diabetes Day entitled “Understanding Diabetes” and will give insights into diabetes and is suitable for carers, especially Care Home staff. This will be held at the Buckingham Hotel, Sept 20th. 10.00- 4.00 pm. Other speakers will talk on the Protection of Vulnerable Adults, smoking cessation, genetics of diabetes, and Diabetes UK. The day is free, but a £10 registration fee for Health Care workers requiring certification is required.

There could have been 10 matches to report on in this high summer period, but the continuing mix of poor weather and opposition no-shows brought this down to four.
The last midweek match of the season was an exception. The team enjoyed their visit to Graves Park, Sheffield, in the warm evening sun, and were grateful to the Fixtures Sec for a pleasure they would never have known if they’d turned up the following, very wet day when Dore Moor CC were actually expecting them.
The home match v Youlgreave had to be switched from Tideswell because of waterlogging, but for once TCC pulled off a win over there, with Reece Astley (35) the biggest contributor to TCC’s 119, while Greg Taylor took 3-10 as Youlgreave made just 73 in reply.
Youlgreave came to Tideswell on a much better day a fortnight or so later, for a Tuesday evening match, and Tideswell pulled off a second win by keeping them down to
a minimal 55 runs, Ben Rooke taking 2-3 off his 4 overs and Mike Sayers 2-6. Captain Dave Waining hit 27*, i.e. roughly half the target, to steer Tideswell home with 7 overs left.
Tideswell have prospered down at Grindleford in recent years, but it was not to be in 2012. Grindleford’s 180 was a bit too high a target, though Dave Waining (37) and Mike Sayers (28*) had a go.
Having fairly thrashed Eyam in Wakes Week at Tideswell in an evening game, TCC lost in the 40-over match in the Plague Village, falling 49 short, despite Brendan Wittram’s 46 and 3-33 plus 30 from Stuart Scoffins.
The season will be more or less over soon, and if all the remaining four games are played, we shall have managed 17 out of a possible 37. What a summer! Disley tell us that their 1st XI league team is in danger of relegation, not because of poor results, but because of 7 abandoned matches!
