Healthy New Year’s

Resolutions for Kids I will clean up my toys and put them where they belong.

I will brush my teeth twice a day, and wash my hands after going to the bathroom and

before eating.

I will try to find a sport (like basketball or soccer) or an activity (like playing tag,

jumping rope, dancing or riding my bike) that I like and do it at least three times a

week!

I’ll be nice to other kids. I’ll be friendly to kids who need friends—like someone who

is shy, or is new to my school.

I’ll never give out personal information such as my name, home address, school name

or telephone number on the internet. Also, I’ll never send a picture of myself to some-

one I chat with on the computer without my parent’s permission.

In Our Village...

Marion P. Thomas Charter School partnered with Jersey Cares to collect coats and

distribute them to Newark families in need.

With Mr. Jackson, Dean of Students and Culture for the Middle School, taking lead

on the project, the coats were collected and distributed during the week of December

17th. Mr. Jackson enlisted the help of our parents, so a big shout out goes to

Mr. McCauley (parent of 5th Grader Shayla McCauley) and Mr. & Mrs. Henderson

(parents of 8th Grader Monasia Henderson) for assisting with the

distribution of the coats to our students.

The MPTCS village would like to say thank you to Jersey Cares and

Mr. Jackson for helping to make this season of giving a little warmer for families in

need.

If you know of any volunteer opportunities that students at Marion P. Thomas Charter School could participate in, or are interested

in volunteering at the Marion P. Thomas Charter School, please contact Mr. Jackson, Dean of Students and Culture at the Middle

School ([email protected]) or Ms. Davis, Parent Liaison ([email protected]) at the elementary school! To learn more about

Jersey Cares, please visit www.jerseycares.org.

Charter Renewal Process Every five years, New Jersey’s charter schools are required to participate in a charter renewal process, which includes a thorough

examination of school operations by the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE). In preparation, MPTCS has completed a

detailed self-assessment. We assembled our committees to review data, documents and programs from the last 4 years. Using this

data, we submitted our charter renewal application on October 15. A copy is available on the Parent Portal.

We are now entering the second phase of the process. On Wednesday, January 9, 2013, the NJDOE will visit MPTCS and speak to

students, staff, parents, board members and administrators.

In March 2013, the NJDOE will inform us if our charter has been renewed. We will keep you abreast of the feedback we receive and

any other information regarding the renewal process...stay tuned!
