Electronics RecyclingWith the holidays upon us, many of us can count on getting a new device. The question is, what do wedo with our old ones? Regular garbage service will not take electronics. There are some places locallythat will. You can find a list of locations that accept electronics on the Village’s website(www.streamwood.org). You can also visit the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s websiteat http://www.epa.state.il.us/land/electronic-waste-recycling/index.html. Emerald Ash Borer UpdateThe Village has been aggressively working on combatting the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).We adopted a plan to mitigate the damage the EAB has on our urban forest. The planincludes educating citizens, and removing and replacing public trees.

Since the EAB was confirmed in the Village, 2,108 ash trees have been removed and 998trees have been replaced. The Village plans on replacing almost all of the trees removed depending on loca-tion restraints and utility conflicts. Most ash trees will be removed by early 2016. Replacements will be plantedby 2017. Species diversity will be a planting objective to better protect our community’s trees in the future.

If you have any questions regarding trees, including ash trees on private property, please call theForestry Division at (630) 736-3850.

Tips for an Energy Efficient WinterThe Natural Resource Conservancy Commission offers thefollowing tips for a more energy efficient winter:

• Use non-toxic products such as clean clay cat litter, sand, or fireplace/stove ash instead of salt or chemicalde-icers.

• Use a shovel or broom to clear snow from your side-walk, porch, or driveway rather than gasoline-poweredsnow blowers.

• Lower your thermostat (or install a programmablethermostat) at night and when you’re away - 10degrees can reduce your heating bill by 10%-20%.

• Make sure your heating system is operating at its mostefficient. Have a contractor perform a routine check-up before winter hits.

• Weather-strip your windows and caulk any cracks youfind in the window frames.

• Open curtains, drapes, and blinds that receive directsunlight during the day. Close the window coverings atnight to keep the heat in.
